Porphyrins and carbon nanomaterials are among the most widely investigated and applied compounds, both offering multiple options to modulate their optical, electronic and magnetic properties by easy and well-established synthetic manipulations. Individually, they play a leading role in the development of efficient and robust chemical sensors, where they detect a plethora of analytes of practical relevance. But even more interesting, the merging of the peculiar features of these single components into hybrid nanostructures results in novel materials with amplified sensing properties exploitable in different application fields, covering the areas of health, food, environment and so on. In this contribution, we focused on recent examples reported in literature illustrating the integration of different carbon materials (i.e., graphene, nanotubes and carbon dots) and (metallo)porphyrins in heterostructures exploited in chemical sensors operating in liquid as well as gaseous phase, with particular focus on research performed in the last four years.

A low-cost on-paper sensor based on 5,10,15-tritolylcorrolatocobalt(III) triphenylphosphine, CoTTCorr(PPh3), was developed for cyanide detection in aqueous solutions. The sensor was coupled to a smartphone and used a home-written color intensity analysis software in order to record and interpret the colorimetric response. The detection of cyanide was possible down to 0.053 mg/L, an order of magnitude lower than the value of 0.5 mg/L set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for safe short-term exposure of cyanide in potable water. The colorimetric sensor had selectivity toward cyanide ions over the anions Cl-, Br, F-, NO2, SCN-, OA[Formula: see text]-,ClO4-, H2PO4- and HCO3- while the influence of NO3- ions on the sensor optical response towards cyanide was overcome by optimization of the ionophore/anion-exchanger ratio inside the sensing material. The best performance was obtained for the optode with an ionophore to exchanger ratio of 1:3. The optimized optodes were employed for quantification of cyanide content added to potable water and saliva.

A series of 5,10,15-triarylcorroles has been prepared, with the meso-aryl rings functionalized with different substituents to investigate their influence on the aryl ring rotation with respect to the corrole plane. The study has been carried out by different NMR techniques, allowing the complete assignment of the 1H NMR spectra and giving insights on the kinetic and thermodynamic factors driving the atropisomerism in triarylcorrole derivatives.

We report a low-cost sensing platform for effective naked-eye detection of fluoride ion in aqueous media. The sensor is based on silicon complex of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole (SiTTCorr) deposited on paper support and designed in a particular way that permits it to perform in a unique sensing event an internal sensor self-calibration and subsequent analysis of fluoride ion in a concentration range from 20 [Formula: see text]g/L to 200 mg/L with a LOD 9 [Formula: see text]g/L, much lower than the WHO guideline value of 1.5 mg/L for fluoride in drinking water. The influence of tetradodecylammonium chloride (TDACl) anion exchanger addition to the performance of SiTTCorr-based sensors was studied and the sensor with optimal ionophore: exchanger [Formula: see text] 2:1 ratio demonstrated the highest sensitivity. The evident color variation of SiTTCorr-based optode from dark pink to intense green occurred upon addition of increasing concentrations of fluoride. A smartphone application equipped with home-written color intensity analysis software as a detector of developed sensor output permitted fluoride content quantification in bottled water and toothpaste samples. Moreover, since at the quantification step the SiTTCorr color variation was significant for the red component of visible light and increase of fluoride content evidently changed this color from red to yellow and then to green, the developed optode was compared to a kind of chemical traffic light, able to detect the presence of fluoride in permitted, borderline or dangerous concentrations, respectively.

Copper and gallium β-acrolein corroles have been obtained by reaction of corrole complexes with 3-(dimethylamino)-acrolein/phosphoryl chloride (3-DMA/POCl3) under Vilsmeier conditions. In the case of the Ga complex, up to four acroleyl substituents have been introduced at the β-peripheral positions of the corrole macrocycle. The introduction of the acroleyl moiety on the corrole scaffold strongly influences the photophysical behaviour of the Ga corroles.

The impressive chemistry shown by porphyrins in natural systems is particularly attractive for exploitation in chemical sensors. In these devices the sensing mechanisms can mimic most of the porphyrin biological reactivity, such as reversible binding, activation of small molecules, redox activity, and photoactivated processes. The simultaneous presence of multiple binding mechanisms allows porphyrins to interact with a large variety of analytes. This feature reduces the selectivity, but prompts the development of sensor arrays, where the cross-selectivity of more sensors is used to classify and identify samples characterized by a complex composition. Since 1995 the Sensors Group of the University of Rome Tor Vergata has exploited these features to prepare sensor arrays based on different transducers and aimed at several applications. These kinds of devices have been reported as electronic noses (gaseous phase analytes) and electronic tongues (liquid phase analytes) to underline that their working mechanisms are tentatively similar to that of biological senses. We report here some of the results obtained.

Thin film deposition of porphyrinoids is a critical step for the development of reliable chemical sensors. The binding properties, in liquid phase, of these compounds should be in fact preserved as much as possible in the solid state, to allow an efficient recognition of target analytes. However, the solid-state arrangements of these macrocycles could offer additional binding mechanisms that exceed those possible to the single molecules allowing to even enhance the superb binding versatility of porphyrinoids. In this manuscript, we have reviewed mostly our approach for the thin film deposition of porphyrinoids, going from the simple, noncontrolled techniques to the preparation of composite inorganic/organic materials. All these opportunities drive the aggregation of porphyrinoids by supramolecular interactions and the possibility to merge their properties with those of inorganic materials open the way to an almost unlimited possibility to prepare optimized sensing layers.

Porphyrins and related macrocycles have been intensively exploited as sensing materials in chemical sensors, since in these devices they mimic most of their biological functions, such as reversible binding, catalytic activation, and optical changes. Such a magnificent bouquet of properties allows applying porphyrin derivatives to different transducers, ranging from nanogravimetric to optical devices, also enabling the realization of multifunctional chemical sensors, in which multiple transduction mechanisms are applied to the same sensing layer. Potential applications are further expanded through sensor arrays, where cross-selective sensing layers can be applied for the analysis of complex chemical matrices. The possibility of finely tuning the macrocycle properties by synthetic modification of the different components of the porphyrin ring, such as peripheral substituents, molecular skeleton, coordinated metal, allows creating a vast library of porphyrinoid-based sensing layers. From among these, one can select optimal arrays for a particular application. This feature is particularly suitable for sensor array applications, where cross-selective receptors are required. This Review briefly describes chemical sensor principles. The main part of the Review is divided into two sections, describing the porphyrin-based devices devoted to the detection of gaseous or liquid samples, according to the corresponding transduction mechanism. Although most devices are based on porphyrin derivatives, seminal examples of the application of corroles or other porphyrin analogues are evidenced in dedicated sections.

The synthesis, spectroscopic, and optical properties of the water-soluble phosphorus complex of a 2-sulfonato-10-(4-sulfonatophenyl)-5,15-dimesitylcorrole have been investigated. The compound was prepared by adopting a novel strategy for the corrole sulfonation, leading to the regioselective isomer in an almost quantitative yield. The phosphorus coordination has a key role in determining the corrole substitution pattern, limiting the formation of poly-substituted species, which affected the reaction of the corrole free base. The resulting complex shows excellent optical properties in terms of emission quantum yield, also in polar protic solvents, including water. 31P NMR spectroscopy in CD3OD indicates that the P sulfonate complex has been isolated in a hexacoordinated geometry with two different ligands (L1=-OH, L2=-OCH3), and it is prone to axial ligand exchange with methanol, with no evidence of intermediate pentacoordinated species. The morphological characterization of thin layers of the P corrole deposited onto an Au(111) surface showed that the addition of an intermediate layer of reduced graphene oxide allows for a better control of corrole aggregation, inducing also transformation of the Au(111) reconstructed surface. © 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An efficient β-functionalization of [5,10,15-tris-(4-methylphenyl)corrolato]cobalt derivatives through a Vilsmeier-type reaction allows the introduction of an acrolein substituent, which is subsequently copolymerized with pure acrolein. The obtained hybrid microspheres are exploited as nanogravimetric chemical sensors. The sensing properties of the developed sensors are tested through exposure to different volatile organic compounds chosen as model analytes. The results show improved sensor sensitivity of the resulting devices for all the tested analytes with respect to sensors functionalized with either corrole or polyacrolein. The enhanced properties are attributed to the accurate and tunable merging of the properties of both exploited materials.

A diiminoisoindolo-pyrazino unit was annulated to the β-pyrrolic position of the Zn complex of tetraphenylporphyrin, giving a macrocycle with an expanded π system in satisfactory yields. The crystal structure of this derivative evidenced the formation of a hydrogen bond network. The interaction of the β-fused isoindoline porphyrin derivative with nucleotides and nucleic acids has been investigated.

A thoroughly structural characterization of (TTC)GePh (TTC [Formula: see text] 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole; Ph [Formula: see text] phenyl) in solution has been carried out through a combination of 2D NMR (1H-1H COSY, 1H-1H ROESY, 1H-[Formula: see text]C HSQC and 1H-[Formula: see text]C HMBC) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the molecular and electronic structure and the shielding constants. The 1H and [Formula: see text]C chemical shifts computed at DFT-S12g and DFT-SAOP levels of theory nicely reproduce the experimental values, the agreement between theory and experiment being especially good for the DFT-S12g results. The calculations prove to be able to capture the fine details of the NMR spectra and to resolve some assignment ambiguities related to the inherent conformational flexibility of the macrocycle. The calculations also provide an explanation of the observed chemical shift trends in terms of diamagnetic and paramagnetic components of the shielding tensor.

Hierarchical self-assembly of porphyrins is an intrigue research field, which can lead to the design of functional materials. Porphyrin derivatives self-assembling under hierarchical control allows to understand the principles governing molecular recognition processes, as demonstrated for meso-tetrakis(4-phosphonatophenyl)porphyne (H2TPPP) whose polyprotic nature is responsible for a pH-dependent hierarchical aggregation. Herein, self-assembly of meso-tris(4-phosphonatophenyl)corrole (TPPC) in aqueous solution has been spectroscopically studied and compared to that of TPPP. The corrole aggregation does not follow the hierarchical rules that govern the porphyrin counterpart due to the accessibility of the core of the macrocycle to protons, promoted by the reduced number of involved intermolecular H-bonds.

Functionalization of corrole at its peripheral positions is an intriguing field of research, since the unusual reactivity of this macrocycle usually makes it difficult to predict the reaction products. We have investigated the introduction of halogen atoms at the corrole β-positions by using haloacids as reagents. Different behavior, in terms of number and position of the units introduced, was observed: chlorination yielded mono and disubstituted corrole, whereas bromination only afforded mono-substitution, even if on different positions. Iodination did not occur on the corrole free base, while the protection of the inner core by chelation with silver ion gave better results and a symmetric diiodinated corrole was isolated. 2D NMR analysis and X-ray crystallography provided useful information about the site of these corrole functionalizations.

The efficacy of breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis for the screening of patients bearing breast cancer lesions has been demonstrated by using gas chromatography and artificial olfactory systems. On the other hand, in-vitro studies suggest that VOCs detection could also give important indications regarding molecular and tumorigenic characteristics of tumor cells. Aim of this study was to analyze VOCs in the headspace of breast cancer cell lines in order to ascertain the potentiality of VOCs signatures in giving information about these cells and set-up a new sensor system able to detect breast tumor-associated VOCs. We identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis a VOCs signature that discriminates breast cancer cells for: i) transformed condition; ii) cell doubling time (CDT); iii) Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors (ER, PgR) expression and HER2 overexpression. Moreover, the signals obtained from a temperature modulated metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor can be classified in order to recognize VOCs signatures associated with breast cancer cells, CDT and ER expression. Our results demonstrate that VOCs analysis could give clinically relevant information about proliferative and molecular features of breast cancer cells and pose the basis for the optimization of a low-cost diagnostic device to be used for tumors characterization.

The insertion of a –NO2 group onto the corrole framework represents a key step for subsequent synthetic manipulation of the macrocycle based on the chemical versatility of such a functionality. Here we report results on the investigation of a copper 3-NO2-triarylcorrolate in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions with “active” methylene carbanions, namely diethyl malonate and diethyl 2-chloromalonate. Although similar reactions on nitroporphyrins afford chlorin derivatives, nucleophilic attack on carbon-2 of corrole produces 2,3-difunctionalized Cu corrolates in acceptable yields (ca. 30%), evidencing once again the erratic chemistry of this contracted porphyrinoid.

The aim of this work is to understand the surface interactions of Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) with a water soluble corrole using graphene as a versatile substrate for sensor devices. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and UV-Vis Spectroscopy are employed for understanding the morphology and microstructure of the deposited corrole molecules on RGO at atomic level. Other surface characterization technique like X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is also used for better understanding of the chemical distribution, the molecular environment and the hybridization of the corrole molecules on RGO.

The phenyl–iron complex of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole was prepared by reaction of the starting chloro–iron complex with phenylmagnesium bromide in dichloromethane. The organometallic complex was fully characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All of these techniques support the description of the electronic structure of this phenyl–iron derivative as a low-spin iron(IV) coordinated to a closed-shell corrolate trianion and to a phenyl monoanion. Complete assignments of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the phenyl–iron derivative and the starting chloro–iron complex were performed on the basis of the NMR spectra of the regioselectively β-substituted bromo derivatives and the DFT calculations., The preparation of complex 1 fills a gap in the series of triarylcorrole iron derivatives. The spectroscopic and theoretical characterization of this complex indicates that it can be described as an Fe(IV) derivative, with a nonoxidized corrole species, acting as a trianionic ligand. However also in this case significant spin density is present on the corrole ring, as predicted by DFT calculations and confirmed by the 1H NMR isotropic shifts.

A novel method for the preparation of beta-fused porphyrin dyads was developed that exploits a one-pot reaction of 2,3-diaminoporphyrins with diethyl oxalate. This approach provides good yields of the zinc beta-fused dyad and the corresponding free-base, opening the way for preparation of several metal derivatives to permit modulation of optoelectronic characteristics for commercial applications. 5,10,15-Triaryltetrabenzocorroles functionalized with different electron-withdrawing groups on the β,β'-fused rings have been prepared by a cross-coupling Heck procedure between octabrominated copper corrole and a terminal alkene bearing electron-withdrawing moieties. The spectroscopic characterization of these complexes showed red-shifted UV-vis absorption bands characterized by a significant band broadening. The same feature was observed in the case of NMR spectra, where low-resolution groups of signals were observed. This behavior derives from a strong tendency of these macrocycles to aggregate in solution, as has been demonstrated by an (1)H NMR study performed on one of these tetrabenzocorroles. The influence of the substituents on the fused benzene ring on the properties of the tetrabenzocorroles was investigated by electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry, and comparisons were made between properties of the newly synthesized compounds and those of the tetrabenzocorroles reported earlier in the literature.

Porphyrins and related macrocycles have been widely exploited as sensing layers of different kind of chemical sensors. Among the different porphyrin analogs, corrole has been object of an increasing attention in the last few years; because of its peculiar coordination chemistry, corrole can be a useful system to study the influence of analytes coordination in an overall sensing mechanism. We have synthesized different corrole derivatives in order to use them as sensing layers of nanogravimetric chemical sensors. The resulting sensors have been exposed to volatile organic compounds and gases chosen as model analytes. Sensors performances have been compared with those of similar devices functionalized with analogous porphyrin derivatives. The results show that in the case of corrole the supramolecular binding mechanism is more efficient than coordination for CO and NO detection, and that the two binding mechanisms can actually cooperate to increase the sensitivity. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. 5,10,15-Triaryltetrabenzocorrole complexes of aluminum, gallium, germanium, and phosphorus were synthesized by coordination of these metal ions in the preformed triaryltetrabenzocorrole macrocycle, opening a way to the investigation of different metal complexes. The UV-vis spectra of these derivatives exhibit a red shift and broadening of all absorption bands because of the π-extended aromatic system and distortion of the molecular framework. The electrochemical and photophysical behaviors of the free base and the metal complexes of meso-triaryltetrabenzocorrole were investigated and characterized.

Two different methods for the regioselective nitration of different meso-triarylcorroles leading to the corresponding β-substituted nitrocorrole iron complexes have been developed. A two-step procedure affords three Fe(III) nitrosyl products-the unsubstituted corrole, the 3-nitrocorrole, and the 3,17-dinitrocorrole. In contrast, a one-pot synthetic approach drives the reaction almost exclusively to formation of the iron nitrosyl 3,17-dinitrocorrole. Electron-releasing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of the triarylcorroles induce higher yields and longer reaction times than what is observed for the synthesis of similar triarylcorroles with electron-withdrawing functionalities, and these results can be confidently attributed to the facile formation and stabilization of an intermediate iron corrole π-cation radical. Electron-withdrawing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of triarylcorrole also seem to labilize the axial nitrosyl group which, in the case of the pentafluorophenylcorrole derivative, results in the direct formation of a disubstituted iron μ-oxo dimer complex. The influence of meso-aryl substituents on the progress and products of the nitration reaction was investigated. In addition, to elucidate the most important factors which influence the redox reactivity of these different iron nitrosyl complexes, selected compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible or FTIR spectroelectrochemistry in CH 2Cl 2. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Functionalization of the β-pyrrolic positions of the corrole macrocycle with -NO 2 groups is limited at present to metallocorrolates due to the instability exhibited by corrole free bases under oxidizing conditions. A careful choice of the oxidant can limit the transformation of corroles into decomposition products or isocorrole species, preserving the corrole aromaticity, and thus allowing the insertion of nitro groups onto the corrole framework. Here we report results obtained by reacting 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole (TTCorrH 3) with the AgNO 2/ NaNO 2 system, to give mono- and dinitrocorrole derivatives when stoichiometry is carefully controlled. Reactions were found to be regioselective, affording the 3-NO 2TTCorrH 3 and 3,17-(NO 2) 2TTCorrH 3 isomers as the main products in the case of mono- and disubstitution, in 53 and 20% yields, respectively. In both cases, traces of other mono- and disubstituted isomers were detected, which were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The influence of the β-nitro substituents on the corrole properties is studied in detail by UV-visible, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical characterization of these functionalized corroles. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations of the ground and excited state properties of these β-nitrocorrole derivatives also afforded significant information, closely matching the experimental observations. It is found that the β-NO 2 substituents conjugate with the π-aromatic system of the macrocycle, which initiates significant changes in both the spectroscopic and redox properties of the so functionalized corroles. This effect is more pronounced when the nitro group is introduced at the 2-position, because in this case the conjugation is, for steric reasons, more efficient than in the 3-nitro isomer. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrin metal derivatives have been exploited as porous sensing layers to functionalize nanogravimetric chemical sensors. Their sensing performances have been tested by exposing the devices to different concentration of volatile compounds. While the peripheral substitution of porphyrin from one side allowed the formation of porous thin films, the other significantly oriented the sensor selectivities towards analytes able to interact by hydrogen bonding. A more intriguing result was the unexpected sensitivity observed toward CO detection, which cannot be ascribed to the CO coordination to the metalloporphyrin sensing layer. In this case the sensing mechanism is due to the entrapment of CO inside the porous porphyrin network, confirming that supramolecular porphyrin aggregates offer a sensing mechanism not available to the single molecular unit. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Mono- and di-substituted β-nitro derivatives have been obtained from the reaction of ttcorrFeCl with sodium nitrite in refluxing DMF. This result is unprecedented for iron corrolates and further evidences the non-innocent character of the corrole ligand. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The reaction of 5,10,15-triarylcorrole with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole provides another example of corrole ring expansion to give the corresponding 6-azahemiporphycene, a novel porphyrin analogue. The facile oxidation of the corrole ring is a required step for the ring expansion and for this reason the reaction fails in the case of corroles bearing meso-phenyl groups carrying electron-withdrawing substituents. Steric requirements also limited the scope of the reaction, which is not successful in the case of 2,6-disubstituted meso-aryl corroles. The occurrence of an initial oxidation is further supported by formation of the 6-azahemiporphycene derivative when the reaction is carried out under the same conditions, using a 5- or a 10-isocorrole as starting material. 1H NMR spectra and X-ray crystal characterization of 6-azahemiporphycene evidenced the presence of an intramolecular N;H 3 3 3 N hydrogen bond in the inner core of the macrocycle, while photophysical characterization confirmed the aromatic character of the novel macrocycle, showing an intense Soret-like band around 410 nm in the absorption spectrum. The fluorescence emission is very modest, and 6-azahemiporphycene showed higher photostability than the corresponding corrole species. Different metal complexes of 6-azahemiporphycene were prepared following synthetic protocols usually exploited for the preparation of metalloporphyrins, demonstrating good coordination properties for the macrocycle. Both the free-base and metal derivatives were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry in dichloromethane and benzonitrile. To further detail the behavior of this novel macrocycle, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on the basic structure of 6-azahemiporphycene with the aim of assessing aromaticity and tautomerism, as well as calculating its stability with respect to the 5-aza isomer.

The reaction of a corrole with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole affords an unprecedented 6-azahemiporphycene structure through macrocycle ring expansion; this is a further example of interconversion between different classes of tetrapyrroles.

A new method for the preparation of isocorroles has been developed based on the reaction of triphenylcorrole with DDQ. Regioisomer 7 where the interruption of the conjugation is at the 5 position, is reported for the first time. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ge complexes of 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole were prepared in refluxing dry DMF using GeCl4 as the source of Ge. Chromatographic separation of the crude reaction mixture afforded the μ-oxo dimer 1 and the methoxy derivative 2a. The corresponding chloride 2b can be obtained by treatment of 1 or 2a with HCl. The reaction of 2a with Br2 in CHCl3/py afforded the hexabromo derivative 3 as the main product, giving the first indication of the regioselective substitution of pyrroles B and C on the corrole ring. The fully brominated open-chain tetrapyrrole 4 was also characterized as a reaction by-product. Different partially brominated Ge complexes 5 and 6 have been obtained by variation of reaction conditions, while the heptabromo derivative was obtained in a mixture with the corresponding fully brominated Gecorrole. Photophysical characterization of Ge corrolates confirmed the high fluorescence quantum yield of such complexes, and also led to the first observation of phosphorescence emissions from corrole complexes. The reaction of meso-triarylcorroles with AgNO2 proceeds with concomitant metalation and peripheral substitution to give the corresponding nitro-substituted silverIII corrole complex. The substitution is highly regioselective, giving only the corresponding 3-nitro derivative, among the different possible isomers. The results obtained indicate that the reaction intermediate is the pi-cation radical of the complex, which is then attacked by nitrite ion. This was proven by the reaction of the copper corrole complexes with NaNO2: in this case, the nitration reaction proceeded without the addition of an oxidant, because of the pi-cation radical character of the copper complex. The reaction is also successful in the case of 2,3,17,18-tetraethyl-8,12-diacetoxymethyl-7,13-dimethylcorrole (AMCorH3), with the formation of the meso-substituted silver corrole derivative (NO2)3AMCorAg (fully characterized by X-ray crystallography), the first of its kind to be reported. Two of the corroles are characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry in dichloromethane, and the site of electron transfer is elucidated.

Corrole is one of the first examples of porphyrin analogs reported in the literature. This class of compounds has received a great attention, because of their promising exploitation in different fields, ranging from medicine to material chemistry. Among them, corrole can be considered the prototypical example of contracted porphyrins, with one of the meso carbon bridges missing. Although this macrocycle was first reported more than thirty years ago, only recently more attention has been devoted to the chemistry of corrole. The recent availability of efficient and facile syntheses of meso-substituted corroles has probably been the shuttle for the impressive flourishing of corrole-related papers appearing in literature in the last few years. The aim of this review is to highlight the latest reports in the synthetic chemistry of corrole, with special attention to the synthetic strategies and peripheral functionalizations of this macrocycle.

Novel dyads in which a porphyrin ring is directly fused through two β-pyrrolic carbons to a BODIPY® moiety have been prepared using a stepwise approach starting from the copper(II) complex of pyrrolo[2,3-c]-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin. Formylation and reaction with 3,5-dimethylpyrrole afforded 8; subsequent BF2 complexation gave the TPP-BODIPY® dyad in reasonable yields. Demetalation in TFA/H2SO4 led to the corresponding free base 12, opening the way to the subsequent preparation of the Zn complex 13. Both 12 and 13 exhibited complex optical spectra with an intensely red-shifted Q-band. Luminescence spectra displayed a very intense band around 700 nm making these species suitable as near-IR dyes and sensors in biological media. Optical analyses of 12, using the INDO/SCI technique, were performed to obtain information to establish the origin of the novel optical properties. These studies showed that the optical properties of 12 cannot be attributed to deformation of the molecular skeleton, but derive from the increased extension of the conjugation between the TPP and BODIPY® π-systems.

In aqueous solution meso-tetrakis(4-phosphonatophenyl)porphyrin shows self-aggregation processes controlled by the "sergeant-soldier rule". After partial protonation of the external phosphonic groups, it is possible (i) to further protonate the inner nitrogen atoms of the molecules or (ii) to allow, over time, the system to aggregate. Therefore, the two procedure lead to a different system evolution, producing species with different chemico-physical properties.

Thin films consisting of a fulleropyrrolidine derivative 1 and a novel water-soluble porphyrin 2 were prepared by the Langmuir–Sh+fer (LS, horizontal lifting) method. In particular, a solution of 1 in chloroform and dimethyl sulfoxide was spread on the water surface, while porphyrin 2 (bearing peripheral anionic groups) was dissolved into the aqueous subphase. To the best of our knowledge, such a versatile method of film fabrication for fullerene/porphyrin mixed composite films has never been used before. Evidence of the effective interactions between the two moieties at the air– water interface was obtained from the analysis of the floating layers by means of surface pressure versus area per molecule Langmuir curves, Brewster angle microscopy and UV-visible reflection spectroscopy. The characterisation of the LS films by UV-visible spectroscopy reveals that the two constituents behave as discrete and weakly interacting p systems. The use of polarised light suggests the existence of a preferential direction of the macrocyclic rings with an edge-on arrangement with respect to the substrate surface. Finally, photoaction spectra were recorded from films deposited by only one horizontal lifting onto indium–tin– oxide (ITO) electrodes and the observed photocurrent increased notably with increasing transfer surface pressure.

A fiber optic multimeter is presented, consisting of a platform for interrogating an array of absorption-based chemical sensors. It has been validated on a set of porphyrin-based materials having gas-sensor potential. Discrimination between different kinds of gases has been demonstrated.

The influence of peripheral alkyl substituents on the sensing behaviour of metalloporphyrin-based Thickness Shear Mode Resonating sensors (TSMRs) has been investigated. The presence of the alkyl chains improves the metalloporphyrin thin film permeability but at the same time increases the magnitude of non-specific interactions, reducing the influence of the intrinsic metalloporphyrin selectivity. The butyloxy derivative 2 represents a good example of a compromise between these opposite effects, where the short alkyl chain is able to increase the sensitivity and response time behaviour of the TSMR sensor, without significant loss of the selectivity properties.

A one-pot procedure that allows the preparation of 5,10,15-triarylcorroles directly from the condensation of pyrrole and benzaldehydes, avoiding the concomitant formation of the corresponding tetraarylporphyrins, has been developed. This approach is general and allows the preparation of sterically hindered corroles from 2,6-disubstituted benzaldehydes, where the Rothemund approach failed. The first examples of fully substituted corrole free bases were prepared following this approach, but in this case corroles were obtained as a mixture with the corresponding dodecasubstituted porphyrins. Unsymmetrically substituted ABC corroles were obtained from the condensation of two different dipyrromethanes. A [2+12] biladiene-like approach afforded 10-(4-methylphenyl)-5,15-diphenylcorrole, along with a significant amount of tetraphenylporphyrin from the self-tetramerization of the starting pyrryl carbinol. An X-ray structure of 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole shows deviations from planarity that are attributed to the steric hindrance between the three hydrogen atoms present in the core of the corrole. Luminescence spectra of 5,10,15-triarylcorroles (where aryl = Ph , 3- NO 2- Ph or 4- NO 2- Ph ) show intense emission bands that, in the case of the nitro derivatives, are strongly dependent upon the solvent.

The sensing properties of functionalized cavitands have been studied by thin-film coating TMSR chemical sensors and by measuring their responses towards model analytes. We studied the relationship between the sensor performance, in terms of sensitivity and selectivity, and the molecular recognition properties of the cavitands. The Langmuir-like shape of the adsorption isotherm, obtained in the case of short-chain alcohols, demonstrated that selective binding can be achieved by the synergistic interactions of the cavity and the bridging PO(in) groups. In the absence of these substituents, the peripheral alkyl chains necessary for the formation of highly permeable thin films attenuate the cavity effect because of nonspecific dispersion interactions. This completely overrides the response originating from molecular recognition. The same effect is observed when the PO groups are oriented outward from the cavity. The use of multivariate chemometrics and the study of the correlations between sensors sensitivity and analyte properties provided further evidence of molecular recognition phenomena, whose intensity is enhanced by the permanent free volume created by the rigid cavity surrounding the PO(in) group.

Four chloroiron meso -triphenyl-substituted corrolates have been synthesized and studied by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. As in the case of the β-pyrrole-octaalkylcorrolatoiron chloride complexes studied previously [Inorg. Chem. 39 (2000) 3466], these complexes were also found to be S=3/2 Fe(III) corrolate( 2− ) π-cation radical species, where the macrocycle radical electron is antiferromagnetically coupled to the metal electrons to give an overall S=1 complex. This conclusion is based upon the large alternating-sign contact shifts observed for the meso -phenyl protons. The 1 H isotropic shifts of the pyrrole-H of these chloroiron–triphenylcorrolate complexes are similar to those of the chloroiron tri-(pentafluorophenyl)corrolate complex reported previously and said to be a S=1 Fe(IV) complex bound to a simple corrolate( 3− ) ligand [Inorg. Chem. 39 (2000) 2704]. The 19 F NMR spectrum of the latter complex shows that it has small (negative) phenyl-F isotropic shifts for all phenyl-F, which might suggest that this single compound has a different electronic structure than all other chloroiron corrolates investigated thus far. However, there have as yet been very few NMR investigations of paramagnetic metal macrocycles having fluorine substituents, and thus it is premature to conclude that the small phenyl-F isotropic shifts are definitive proof of small spin density at the meso positions of the corrolate ring. It is concluded that pyrrole-H chemical shifts alone cannot differentiate the two possible electron configurations, simple S=1 Fe(IV) (Corr 3− ) and antiferromagnetically coupled S=3/2 Fe(III) (Corr 2− ), and that based on the 1 H investigations reported in this and two previous papers, all chloroiron corrolates reported thus far, with the exception of one, have the electron configuration S=3/2 Fe(III) (Corr 2− ), in which the corrolate unpaired electron is antiferromagnetically coupled to the three metal electrons, yielding an overall spin for the complex, S=1. The electron configuration of the one exception, the strongly electron-withdrawing tri-(pentafluorophenyl)corrolate complex of iron chloride, cannot as yet be definitively assigned.
