18. Gallium Nanoparticle Formation and Doping of Nanocrystalline Alumina from a Ga–Al Liquid Metal Hydrogen Generating Reaction.

Abstract

We report a liquid metal gallium–aluminum (Ga–Al) composite water splitting reaction, where gallium nanoparticles (Ga NPs) and nanocrystalline aluminum hydroxide [Al-(OH)3] are generated simultaneously with the coproduction of green H2 fuel. This reaction involves the formation of Ga NPs originating from Lewis acid–base nanoclusters composed of Ga and Al NPs. The initial Ga–Al NP liquid composite possesses the ability to cleave the H–O–H bonds of water, resulting in the formation of Ga–H and Al–OH bonds. Under ambient conditions, the Ga–H bonds subsequently metathesize into Ga NPs and H2. Interestingly, these Ga NPs undergo gradual oxidation in air, resulting in the doping of the nanoaluminum hydroxide byproduct. Remarkably, this reaction occurs under atmospheric conditions without the need for caustic chemicals, electrolysis, reverse osmosis, inert atmosphere, or external energy input. The reaction products were characterized using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). We further investigated the influence of various reaction conditions, such as composition of the binary alloy, volume of water used, and temperature, on the resulting byproducts. Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. Screening programs allow early diagnosis and have improved the clinical management of this disease. Aberrant DNA methylation is increasingly being explored as potential biomarkers for many types of cancers. In this study we investigate the methylation of ten target genes in 105 CRC and paired normal adjacent colonic tissue samples using a MethylLight droplet digital PCR (ML-ddPCR) assay. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the diagnostic performance of all target genes individually and in combination. All 515 different combinations of genes showed significantly higher levels of methylation in CRC tissue. The combination of multiple target genes into a single test generally resulted in greater diagnostic accuracy when compared to single target genes. Our data confirms that ML-ddPCR is able to reliably detect significant differences in DNA methylation between CRC tissue and normal adjacent colonic tissue in a specific selection of target genes. 49. Aluminum Nanoparticles from a Ga–Al Composite for Water Splitting and Hydrogen Generation.

Abstract

We report the use of a gallium (Ga)-rich aluminum (Al) composite to enhance the formation of Al nanoparticles and to facilitate its ability to split water to generate hydrogen at ambient conditions. The synthesis of this Ga–Al composite occurs without the need of an inert atmosphere or mechanical aid. Commercial Al can be used, including postconsumer aluminum foil that is usually discarded. Characterization of the Ga–Al composite with scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction illustrates that the Ga acts to dissolve the aluminum oxide coating of the Al nanoparticles. The pristine nanoparticles are then available for continuous water splitting and on-demand hydrogen generation through the Grotthuss mechanism. The water-splitting reaction does not require an applied potential and functions at ambient conditions and neutral pH to rapidly generate 130 mL (5.4 mmol) of hydrogen per gram of alloy. Any available source of water can be used including wastewater, commercial beverages, or even ocean water, with no generation of chlorine gas, as confirmed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. In addition, Ga remains intact, allowing it to be collected and reused indefinitely. The Ga–Al alloy is stable under cyclohexane for at least 3 months so it can be preprepared for a later use.
