This study explores the innovative reuse of end-of-life (EoL) wind turbine blade (WTBs) parts as floats for photovoltaic (PV)-floating systems. In response to the growing concerns about EoL WTB waste, this study applies circular economy principles to repurpose high-value composite materials. By transforming a segment of an Enercon E40 WTB into a float for a PV-floating system, this study not only provides a sustainable solution to EoL composites, but also contributes to the development of renewable energy. The article describes the design of the PV-floating system and the lessons learned from its construction. It also provides an outlook on how such a system can be further scaled up.

Purpose: Numerous studies have shown that healthcare providers, including nurse practitioners (NPs) fail to provide breast cancer risk assessment (BrCRA) in primary care settings. A potential barrier to the use of BrCRA is insufficient knowledge or training of risk assessment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the outcome of a BrCRA program developed to enhance NPs' knowledge of risk assessment and use of empiric risk assessment models. Data sources: Thirty-five NPs participated in a before-after (pretest-posttest design) study evaluating the effectiveness of a BrCRA education program conducted at a national NP conference. Demographics, pre/post knowledge, and course satisfaction measures were all examined as a part of this pilot study. Conclusion: Continuing education through the implementation of a BrCRA program significantly increased NPs knowledge in assessing breast cancer risk and the use of empiric risk assessment models. Implications for practice: Many healthcare providers, including NPs, are inadequately prepared to assess a woman's risk for breast cancer. Understanding breast cancer risk assessment is essential if NPs are to provide appropriate counseling, management, and referral strategies needed to reduce a woman's risk for developing the disease. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurse practitioners' (NPs') knowledge, use, and perceived comfort level in providing breast cancer risk assessment to women in clinical settings. Data sources: This descriptive study was part of a needs assessment to determine if education and training programs on breast cancer risk assessment are warranted for NPs. A convenience sample of 147 NPs completed surveys to assess their knowledge of breast cancer risk assessment and use of empiric breast cancer risk assessment tools, and to evaluate their perceived comfort level in assessing women's risk for developing breast cancer. Conclusions: Assessing women's risk for the development of breast cancer is important in providing primary and secondary preventive strategies such as chemoprevention, lifestyle changes, and enhanced surveillance thatmayreduce a woman's risk for developing the disease. Although 51.4% of NPs reported providing breast cancer risk assessment, few (37%) reported use of family history or the Gail model (6%) to determine their patients' breast cancer risk. NPs' knowledge of breast cancer risk assessment and use of empiric risk assessment models were low. The majority (71%) of NPs felt uncomfortable or a low level of comfort in conducting breast cancer risk assessment. Implications for practice: Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer and second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Breast cancer risk assessment is important in identifying women who may be at high risk for developing the disease. At the front line in health care, NPs can play a vital role in assessing women's risk for breast cancer. These findings suggest that education and training may be warranted to enhance knowledge and use of empiric risk models to increase the comfort level of NPs in conducting breast cancer risk assessment to their patients. Resting spores (hypnospores) of Chaetoceros diadema (Ehrenberg) Gran, Chaetoceros vanheurckii Gran, and Chaetoceros didymus Ehrenberg were collected from a large plastic enclosure moored in Saanich Inlet, B.G., Canada. The effects of combination of temperatures and irradiance on the germination of these resting spores were investigated. Nutrient uptake, carbon fixation, and changes in the photosynthetic capacity of the germinating spores were also examined. Resting spores germinated optionally at combination of temperature and irradiance similar to those in the environment during sporulation. They did not germinate at irradiances ⩽1.3 μEin m[sup-2] s[sup-1] or temperatures >25.3° C.Nitrate, phosphate and silicate were taken up after the rising spores had germinated and resumed vegetative growth. Chlorophyll a fluorescence in vivo, and the DCMU-induced increase in in vivo fluorescence also increased after the rising spores had germinated. Resting spores began to fix carbon as soon as they were placed in light. Spores began to fix carbon as soon as they were placed in light. Spores remained viable for at least 645 d. The length of time between first exposure to light and germination did not change during this period: however, the percentage of viable resting spores decreased . The objective of this study was to understand barriers to healthcare and social service utilization among older adults residing in rural areas who use drugs. A cross-sectional survey of persons who use opioids or inject drugs in rural counties with high overdose rates across ten states was conducted. For this analysis, participants were restricted to only the 375 individuals aged 50 and older. They were asked about barriers to utilizing healthcare and social services. Multivariate analyses were conducted. The most common barriers were a lack of transportation and a fear of stigma. The average number of barriers was 2.53. Those who were either uninsured or homeless endorsed 37% more barriers. For every five-year increase in age, the number of barriers reduced by 15%. Although the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has provided guidance on the control of drug degradants for prescription drugs, there is less guidance on how to set degradant specifications for FDA OTC monograph drugs. Given that extensive impurity testing was not part of the safety paradigm in original OTC monographs, a weight of evidence (WOE) approach to qualify OTC degradants is proposed. This approach relies on in silico tools and read-across approaches alongside standard toxicity testing to determine safety. Using several drugs marketed under 21 CFR 341 as case studies, this research demonstrates the utility of a WOE approach across data-rich and data-poor degradants. Based on degradant levels ranging from 1 to 4% of the maximum daily doses of each case study drug and 10th percentile body weight data for each patient group, children were recognized as having the highest potential exposure relative to adults per body mass. Depending on data availability and relationship to the parent API, margins of safety (MOS) or exposure margins were calculated for each degradant. The findings supported safe use, and indicated that this contemporary WOE approach could be utilized to assess OTC degradants. Complex wastewater is generated during biodiesel production. We propose a new solution for the treatment of wastewater from enzymatic pretreatment of biodiesel production (WEPBP) by using a hybrid system based on the photo-Fered-Fenton process with O 3 assistance (PEF-Fered-O 3 ). We applied response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the suitable conditions for the PEF-Fered-O 3 process: a current intensity of 3 A, an initial solution pH controlled at 6.4, an initial H 2 O 2 concentration of 12,000 mg L -1 , and an O 3 concentration of 50 mg L -1 . We performed three new experiments under similar conditions with slight changes to the conditions, namely a longer reaction time (120 min) and single or periodic H 2 O 2 addition (i.e., small H 2 O 2 additions at different reaction times). Periodic H 2 O 2 addition provided the best removal results probably by reducing the occurrence of undesired side reactions that cause hydroxyl radical ( • OH) scavenging. With the application of the hybrid system, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) decreased by 91% and 75%, respectively. We also evaluated the presence of metals such as iron, copper, and calcium; electric conductivity; and voltage at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min. We submitted raw and treated WEPBP sludge samples to X-ray diffraction to study the degree of crystallinity. There was a rearrangement of the compounds present in treated WEPBP, possibly caused by oxidation of a large fraction of organic matter. Finally, we evaluated the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of WEPBP by using Allium cepa meristematic root cells. Treated WEPBP was less toxic to these cells, denoted by improvements in gene regulation and cell morphology. Given the current scenario for the biodiesel industry, applying the proposed hybrid PEF-Fered-O 3 system at suitable conditions provides an efficient alternative to treat a complex matrix, namely WEPBP, to reduce its potential to cause abnormalities in the cells of living organisms. The present work aims to fill a scientific gap regarding the treatment of wastewater from the enzymatic pretreatment of biodiesel production (WEPBP), as well as the identification of organic contaminants present in this complex matrix. Different treatment strategies were proposed for the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from WEPBP. The interesting combination of O 3 /H 2 O 2 /UV-Vis and electrocoagulation (EC) process was studied in two setups, with the EC process applied prior to O 3 /H 2 O 2 /UV-Vis and vice versa. Further, the innovative hybrid system based on the photo-Fered-Fenton process with O 3 addition (PEF-Fere-O 3 ) was preliminarily studied for WEPBP treatment. The hybrid system provided the best results for the WEPBP treatment when the reactor was operated at pH of 4.5, 65 mg O 3 L -1 and 10000 mg H 2 O 2 L -1 , UV-Vis was used as the irradiation source, and the current intensity of 3.0 A. Removals of 45% of TOC and 68.7% of COD were reached within 45 min. Oleic acid, linoleic acid, and Diisooctyl phthalate (DIOP) were the main organic contaminants identified in the WEPBP as determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Acute toxicity assays with the bio indicator Artemia salina were carried out in untreated and treated WEPBP samples, indicating that the PEF-Fere-O 3 treatment decreased the amount of contaminants present in the WEPBP as well as reduced the toxicity levels and increased biodegradability index, suggesting its great potential for the treatment of complex industrial wastewaters., (Copyright © 2022. Abstract: Coronaviruses, named for their crown-like appearance, are relative newcomers to the human viral encyclopedia, but they are anything but new to the viral landscape. Initially thought to cause relatively mild disease in humans, it is now clear that coronaviruses can cause significant morbidity and mortality. COVID-19 provided a ringside seat from which to watch scientists use genomics in hundreds of ways to learn about, protect against, and ultimately control the effects of this novel virus. Abstract: Advances in genomics research and clinical applications continue to accelerate. Coupled with the availability of direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing of genetic testing and new discoveries, patients are increasingly coming into primary care with genomic questions. This article offers a snapshot of the kinds of questions patients are asking and that providers should be prepared to discuss such as what to do with DTC results or whether pharmacogenetics testing would help make sure "the right" medication is prescribed. Pressed by the accumulating knowledge in genomics and the proven success of the translation of cancer genomics to clinical practice in oncology, the Obama administration unveiled a $215 million commitment for the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) in 2016, a pioneering research effort to improve health and treat disease using a new model of patient-powered research. The objectives of the initiative include more effective treatments for cancer and other diseases, creation of a voluntary national research cohort, adherence to privacy protections for maintaining data sharing and use, modernization of the regulatory framework, and forging public-private partnerships to facilitate these objectives. Specifically, the DoD Military Health System joined other agencies to execute a comprehensive effort for PMI. Of the many challenges to consider that may contribute to the implementation of genomics-lack of familiarity and understanding, poor access to genomic medicine expertise, needs for extensive informatics and infrastructure to integrate genomic results, privacy and security, and policy development to address the unique requirements of military medical practice-we will focus on the need to establish education in genomics appropriate to the provider's responsibilities. Our hypothesis is that there is a growing urgency for the development of educational experiences, formal and informal, to enable clinicians to acquire competency in genomics commensurate with their level of practice. Abstract: Healthy aging is not the result of a single factor. Genes, dietary choices/options, exercise, and environmental exposures all play a role. A family of seven nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent sirtuin proteins are very involved in various metabolic functions, such as glucose and fat regulation, and polymorphisms in these genes have been associated with the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and longevity. Nutraceuticals (i.e., resveratrol, quercetin, kaempferol, and curcumin) and other therapies (i.e., synthetic sirtuin-activating compounds, NAD, nicotinamide mononucleotide) are all being explored as in potential therapies in the sirtuin pathway and point to promising treatments to promote metabolic health and reduce obesity and age-related disease. A solar-driven advanced oxidation process at a lab scale was studied for the degradation and mineralization of the known endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), bisphenol A (BPA). Preliminary tests were performed varying the irradiation source, BPA/H 2 O 2 ratio, temperature, initial H 2 O 2 concentration, initial solution pH, and initial BPA concentration, then, the operational conditions of the UV-solar/H 2 O 2 were optimized by a response surface methodology (RSM), providing the following responses: UV-solar/H 2 O 2 process at pH 3.0, [BPA] 0  = 25 mg L -1 , [H 2 O 2 ] = 350 mg L -1 , T = 50 °C, achieving BPA degradation of 77.4% and BPA mineralization of 38.2%, H 2 O 2 consumption of 230 mg L -1 . From the optimized condition, different pH ranges were tested (3.0; 5.0; 7.0; 9.0; and 11.0), where, at solution pH 5.0 the best removal rates were achieved (89.2% BPA degradation and 49.0% BPA mineralization). The BPA amount in solution was monitored by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and a study of the intermediate reaction by-products was performed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses, highlighting the lower amount of by-products identified when the solution pH 5.0 was employed, rather than the solution pH 3.0. Genotoxicity tests with Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and cytotoxicity tests with Allium cepa were performed aiming to evaluate errors in the cells and nuclear abnormalities of the tested organisms induced by BPA raw samples, as well as by the BPA samples treated by the UV-solar/H 2 O 2 process. Abstract: This third article in the Genomics of Aging series explores the process of glycosylation and how abnormal glycosylation contributes to aging and disease (i.e., diabetes, cardiovascular disease [CVD], neurological disorder, and cancer). Glycosylation is an important posttranslational process that contributes to normal protein folding, cell adhesion, protein stability, and motility. Gradual accumulation of molecular errors contributes to the aging process, and specific genetic variants in this pathway have been identified in cancer, CVD, aging, and vulnerability to disease progression. Manipulating glycosylation pathways may be beneficial in reducing disease risk in the future. Smoking cessation has been shown to reverse epigenetic changes in glycosylation pathways that increase cancer, CVD, and all-cause mortality risk, and CVD risk may be reduced if a dimeric glycosylated fusion protein pathway can be regulated. A wide variety of chemical compounds are used in human activities; however, part of these compounds reach surface water, groundwater and even water considered for potable uses. Due to the limited efficiency of water treatment by the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, the presence of these compounds in natural and human consumption waters can be very harmful due to their high persistence and adverse effects; these characteristics define the contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Water treatment by Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) has been evaluated as a promising process for the removal of persistent and recalcitrant organic contaminants. With this background, the present review aims to gather studies and information published between 2015 and 2020 regarding the occurrence of CECs in surface, potable and groundwater, its treatment by EAOPs, the main operating conditions and by-product generation of EAOPs, contaminant toxicity assessments and international statutory guideline values concerning CEC standards and allowable concentrations in the environment and treated drinking water. Therefore, in this review it was found that the compounds bisphenol A (BPA), diethyltoluamide (DEET), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), carbamazepine, caffeine and atrazine were the most frequently detected in water sources, with concentrations ranging from 35.54-4800, 1.21-98, 0.005-38.5, 5-742.904, 0.0071-586, 0.89-1040, and 100-323 (ng L-1), respectively. Among the operational conditions of EAOPs, current density, pH and oxidant concentration are the main operational parameters that have an influence on these treatment technologies, besides the by-products generated, which might be removed by the integration of EAOPs with biological digestion treatments. Genetics/Genomics is a relatively new science. The basic principles were formally described at the end of the 19th century, the physical structure of genes were described in the middle of the 20th century, and the first gene located in the early 1990s. Later, the human genome was sequenced. More and more genes have been located and described and some are now being manipulated. All health professions are struggling to infuse genomic content into the curriculum. This article traces the roots of the undergraduate and graduate nursing competencies and provides a brief review of the literature describing nursing genetic/genomics education.

A photo-electro-Fenton (PEF) reactor employing boron-doped diamond (BDD) and soft iron anodes was studied in landfill leachate (LL) treatment. The reactor operation parameters (ROP) H 2 O 2 concentration, current intensity and flow rate were investigated in the removal of Abs 254 nm. The PEF process with BDD anode, operating at the best operational conditions, was used as a pre-treatment and enabled biological oxidation (BO). The treatment strategy of PEF followed by BO showed to be the most efficient, reaching reductions of 77.9% chemical oxygen demand (COD), 71.5% total carbon (TC) and 76.3% radiation absorbance in 254 nm (Abs 254 nm), as well as a significant reduction in the genotoxicity (Allium cepa), observed by an increase in the mitotic index (MI) (131.5%) and decrease in the abnormalities (47.8%). The reduction of the toxic potential of LL using the integration of processes was also observed in the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) byproducts analysis, which indicated the removal of emerging contaminants, such as Bisphenol-A (BPA), N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) and Diisooctyl phthalate (DIOP).
