Abstract

The p - p-chain reaction 3He(α, γ)7Be can sensitively influence the prediction of the 7Be and 8B neutrino fluxes. Despite its importance, the knowledge of its reaction cross section at energies of the core of the Sun (15 keV 30 keV) is limited and the accuracy far from the desired 3% level. In the present paper the indirect measurement of the external capture contribution using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) technique is reported. The angular distributions of deuterons emitted in the 6Li(3He,d)7Be α-transfer reactions were measured and the ANCs extracted from the scaling of distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) and coupled-channel (CC) calculations. Then, the astrophysical S-factor for the 3He(α, γ)7Be reaction was calculated assuming E1 direct capture and the zero energy value turned out to be 0.534 0.025 keVb. Both our experimental and theoretical approaches were benchmarked through the analysis of the 6Li(p,γ)7Be astrophysical factor, with interesting astrophysical applications to the understanding of the primordial lithium problem. In particular, the present work disfavors the occurrence of a claimed 200 keV resonance in the astrophysical factor.

Nuclear astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated.We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field. Abstract

The 12C + 16O fusion reaction plays a role in the later stages of carbon burning, influencing the evolution of both massive stars and Type Ia Supernovae: when most of the carbon is depleted, by the main fusion reaction 12C + 12C, the abundance of 16O nuclei is significantly higher. Therefore 12C + 16O can indeed have a strong impact on the process. In this brief contribution, preliminary data analysis results of a new indirect measurement of the 12C + 16O, performed at astrophysical energies via the Trojan Horse Method, will be presented and discussed.

Abstract

The 26Al abundance holds a special role in present-day astrophysics, since it is a probe of active nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and a valuable constraint of Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809-keV γ-line of the daughter 26Mg and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant 24Mg isotope in meteorites. Accurate knowledge of the reaction rates involving 26Al, its stable counterpart 27Al and 24Mg is then mandatory. Moreover, these nuclei enter the MgAl cycle playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg isotopes. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg-Al anti-correlation in red giants of globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not show correlation with Al.The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show an order of magnitude uncertainty owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84-keV resonance and to lower the upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances, with potential important impact for astrophysics. In particular, modifications in the 27Al and 24Mg abundances up to ∼30% are predicted for intermediate mass stars.

Abstract

Stellar nucleosynthesis processes are of vital importance for nuclear physics: all the heavy elements are created by neutron capture reactions that take place in stars. To correctly study such reactions the neutron abundance available in the environment must be known, which means that also the so-called “neutron poisons” must be considered. The present work will focus on the reaction 17O(n,α)14C which removes neutrons from the stellar environment during the s-process. Even though the study of such reactions is of high interest, it still presents several technological problems regarding both the creation and characterization of the neutron beam and the radioprotection of the facility. Therefore, the Trojan Horse Method, an indirect method, has been chosen to study the 17O(n, α)14C reaction in the energy region of astrophysical interest, from 300 keV in the center-of-mass frame down to zero. In the present work, after briefly recalling the main features of the method and reporting on the state of the art for the reaction cross-section measurements, the latest THM experiment will be presented.

Abstract

Nuclear reactions play a key role in the framework of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. A network of 12 principal reactions has been identified as the main path that drove the elemental nucleosynthesis in the first 20 min of the history of the Universe. Among them an important role is played by neutron-induced reactions, which, from an experimental point of view, are usually a difficult task to be measured directly. Nevertheless big efforts in the last decades have led to a better understanding of their role in the primordial nucleosynthesis network. In this work we apply the Trojan Horse Method to extract the cross section at astrophysical energies for the 3He (n,p)3H reaction after a detailed study of the 2H (3He ,pt)H three-body process. Data extracted from the present measurement are compared with other published sets.

Abstract

The abundance of 19F in the universe is strictly related to standard and extra-mixing processes taking place inside AGB-stars, that are considered to be the most important sites for its production. Nevertheless the way in which it is destroyed is far from being well understood. For this reason we studied the 19F(α,p)22Ne reaction, that is supposed to be the main destruction channel in the Helium-rich part of the star. In this experiment, the reaction has been studied in the energy range of relevance for astrophysics (0÷1 MeV) via the Trojan Horse Method (THM), using the three-body reaction 6Li(19F,p22Ne)d.

Abstract

The 10B(p,α0)7Be reaction cross section has been measured in an wide energy range from 2.2 MeV down to 3 keV in a single experiment applying THM. Optimized experimental set-up ensured good energy resolution leading to a good separation of α0 and α1 contributions to the cross section coming from the 7Be ground and first excited state, respectively.
