Tillage modes and straw returning influence soil aggregate stability and the distribution of organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in aggregates of different particle sizes. In the typical hilly regions of southwest China, the predominant soil type is purple soil, characterized by heavy texture and high stickiness, with relatively lower soil fertility compared to other soil types. The improper use of fertilizers and field management practices further exacerbates soil compaction. However, abundant straw resources in the region provide an opportunity for comprehensive straw utilization. The effective utilization of straw resources is of significant importance for stabilizing agricultural ecological balance, improving resource utilization efficiency, and alleviating ecological pressure. Previously, most studies have focused on the impact of different mechanized tillage systems on the physical and chemical properties of soil in hilly areas, while research on the preservation of water-stable aggregates’ organic C and N content remains limited. In this study, the soil properties of fields under a winter pea–summer corn rotation for two years were studied with regards to the effects of straw returning on its water-stable aggregate distribution, macroaggregate content (R0.25), mean weight diameter (MWD), geometric mean diameter (GMD), and the organic C and N content in soil aggregates of different particle sizes and at different depths. The effects of five different tillage modes were assessed, namely rotary tillage with straw mixed retention (RTM), conventional tillage with straw burial retention (CTB), no-tillage with straw covered retention (NTC), subsoiling with straw covered retention (STC), and no-tillage without straw retention (NT). Based on the study results, under different tillage modes, straw returning effectively enhanced the soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) reserves at the plow layer (0–30 cm), SOC increased by 17.2% to 88%, and TN increased by 8.6% to 85.9%. At the same time, the content of 0.25–2 mm aggregates increased under the straw-return treatments under different tillage patterns. The NT treatment had the lowest R0.25 and MWD and GMD values for soil aggregates at different depths, which were significantly different (p < 0.05) from the other treatment modes. The correlation coefficients between SOC and soil aggregate stability indices ranged from 0.68 to 0.90, with most of them showing highly significant positive correlations (p < 0.01). In conclusion, straw returning under different tillage systems has improved soil aggregate stability and promoted soil structure stability. Specifically, the STC treatment has shown more pronounced effects on soil improvement in the upper soil layer of the hilly regions in southwest China, while the RTM treatment is beneficial for improving the lower soil layer. Therefore, the comprehensive experimental results indicate that the combination of STC and RTM treatments represents the most promising mechanized tillage and straw returning practices for the hilly regions in southwest China.

Introduction: In the wave of urbanization, the increase of public lighting equipment in buildings has brought about more prominent problems of energy saving and consumption reduction.Methods: In order to solve the above problems, this paper designs a set of intelligent lighting solutions for digital buildings by combining the smart grid and non-dominant sorting genetic algorithms. Firstly, an intelligent lighting monitoring solution is constructed through ZigBee ad hoc network and sensor technology to monitor the relevant environment and lighting control of the laboratory building. Secondly, this paper uses the DIALux software network to build a public lighting light distributiona public lighting light distribution model in the building, and deeply studies the dimming control strategy of the system under the principle of making full use of sunlight and natural light.Results: The purpose ofself-adaptive intelligent control of desktop illuminance, finally using this scheme to achieve the optimal balance of desktop lighting.Discussion: The simulation experiment counts the power data of the intelligent lighting system under different weather conditions. The experimental results verify that the intelligent lighting control scheme can effectively reduce the output luminous flux of the lamps, thereby reducing power consumption.

Abstract Background Well-balanced interactions between gut microbiota and the immune system are essential to prevent chronic intestinal inflammation, as observed in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) functions as a sensor mediating the crosstalk between the intestinal commensal microbiome and host immunity, but the influence of TLR4 on the shaping of intestinal microbiota and immune responses during colon inflammation remains poorly characterized. We investigated whether the different susceptibilities to colitis between wild-type (WT) and TLR4−/− mice were gut microbiota-dependent and aimed to identify the potential immunity modulation mechanism. Methods We performed antibiotic depletion of the microbiota, cohousing experiments, and faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in WT and TLR4−/− mice to assess the influence of TLR4 on intestinal microbial ecology. 16S rRNA sequencing was performed to dissect microbial discrepancies, and dysbiosis-associated immune perturbation was investigated by flow cytometry. Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila)-mediated immune modulation was confirmed through the T-cell transfer colitis model and bone marrow chimaera construction. Results TLR4−/− mice experienced enhanced susceptibility to DSS-induced colitis. 16S rRNA sequencing showed notable discrepancy in the gut microbiota between WT and TLR4−/− mice. In particular, A. muciniphila contributed most to distinguishing the two groups. The T-cell transfer colitis model and bone marrow transplantation (BMT) consistently demonstrated that A. muciniphila ameliorated colitis by upregulating RORγt+ Treg cell-mediated immune responses. Mucosal biopsies from human manifested parallel outcomes with colon tissue from WT mice, as evidenced by the positive correlation between TLR4 expression and intestinal A. muciniphila colonization during homeostasis. Conclusions Our results demonstrate a novel protective role of TLR4 against intestinal inflammation, wherein it can modulate A. muciniphila-associated immune responses. These findings provide a new perspective on host-commensal symbiosis, which may be beneficial for developing potential therapeutic strategies. Video abstract. Graphical Abstract

The quality of grains is influenced by storage pests, which are not only spoilers of stored grain, but also vectors of human and animal diseases. Chemical pesticides play an essential role in the cultivation and storage of cereals, however, due to the low degradability and residual toxicity of synthetic pesticides on the environment and non-target organisms, as well as the increasing resistance of target organisms to them, consideration should be given to the development of alternative pest control agents. Compounds isolated from natural sources have emerged as preferred targets for the development of novel insecticidal agents because of their eco-friendliness, safety, and effectiveness. In this review, we primarily focus on the natural product (NPs) control of storage pests. The effective monomer components of NPs and their anti-insect mechanisms were discussed, and natural sources of inspiration and models for insect repellents are described. This review aimed to provide guidelines for the exploitation and utilization of green and efficient natural insecticides.

Microwave heating technology performs the characteristics of fast heating, high efficiency, green energy saving and easy control, which makes it deeply penetrate into the food industry and home cooking. It has the potential to alter the appearance and flavor of food, enhance nutrient absorption, and speed up the transformation of active components, which provides an opportunity for the development of innovation foods. However, the change of food driven by microwave heating are very complex, which often occurs beyond people's cognition and blocks the development of new food. It is thus necessary to explore the transformation mechanism and influence factors from the perspectives of microwave technology and food nutrient diversity. This manuscript focuses on the nutritional macromolecules in food, such as starch, lipid and protein, and systematically analyzes the change rule of structure, properties and function under microwave heating. Then, the flavor, health benefits, potential safety risks and bidirectional allergenicity associated with microwave heating are fully discussed. In addition, the development of new functional foods for health needs and future market based on microwave technology is also prospected. It aims to break the scientific fog of microwave technology and provide theoretical support for food science to understand the change law, control the change process and use the change results.

Abstract Background The endoglycosidase heparanase which degrades heparan sulfate proteoglycans, exerts a pro-inflammatory mediator in various inflammatory disorders. However, the function and underlying mechanism of heparanase in acute pancreatitis remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the interplay between heparanase and the gut microbiota in the development of acute pancreatitis. Methods Acute pancreatitis was induced in wild-type and heparanase-transgenic mice by administration of caerulein. The differences in gut microbiota were analyzed by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Antibiotic cocktail experiment, fecal microbiota transplantation, and cohousing experiments were used to assess the role of gut microbiota. Results As compared with wild-type mice, acute pancreatitis was exacerbated in heparanase-transgenic mice. Moreover, the gut microbiota differed between heparanase-transgenic and wild-type mice. Heparanase exacerbated acute pancreatitis in a gut microbiota-dependent manner. Specially, the commensal Parabacteroides contributed most to distinguish the differences between wild-type and heparanase-transgenic mice. Administration of Parabacteroides alleviated acute pancreatitis in wild-type and heparanase-transgenic mice. In addition, Parabacteroides produced acetate to alleviate heparanase-exacerbated acute pancreatitis through reducing neutrophil infiltration. Conclusions The gut–pancreas axis played an important role in the development of acute pancreatitis and the acetate produced by Parabacteroides may be beneficial for acute pancreatitis treatment. Lamiophlomis rotata (Benth.) Kudo (L. rotata) belongs to Lamiaceae family, which is an important medicinal plant endemic to Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Traditionally, the whole herb of L. rotata is used for medicine, especially for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical practise. As a result of absolute digging, the plant has a long regeneration cycle after excavation and the damage to plateau grassland ecological environment is difficult to recover. It has been encouraged to use aerial part of the plant with the purpose of protecting environment and maintaning biological diversity. At present, researchers have compared the primary metabolites and iridoids between aerial parts and roots, but there are few reports on the chemical differences and activity comparison of secondary metabolites. In order to characterize the secondary metabolites of different parts, UPLC/Q-Orbitrap-MS was employed to collect data from the extracts of aerial parts and roots, in combination with plant metabolomics technology to screen and quantify differential metabolites. At the same time, network pharmacological analysis with rheumatoid arthritis and immunity as the key words was carried out according to the identification results to clarify the active ingredients of L. rotata in the treatment of RA, so as to speculate the pharmacological effects of aerial parts and roots based on the distribution of active components. A total of 16 potential markers were selected and identified to differentiate two parts. Among them, 8 characteristic flavonoids with similar skeletons were unique in aerial parts, while the other 8 components, including 2 iridoid glycosides and 6 phenylethanoid glycosides, were detected in both aerial parts and roots, but with differentiate contents. Among the predicted 6 active components, there were 5 flavonoids, of which 3 (namely luteolin, apigenin and 2″-acetylastragalin) were still differential metabolites and mainly distributed in the aerial parts. The results revealed that certain flavonoids as potential markers made a distinction between aerial part and root of L. rotata, and were the main active components against RA, which provided a theoretical basis for the aerial parts to replace the whole herbs, and laid a material foundation for further pharmacological research.

Heparin is the earliest and most widely used anticoagulant and antithrombotic drug that is still used in a variety of clinical indications. Since it was discovered in 1916, after more than a century of repeated exploration, heparin has not been replaced by other drugs, but a great progress has been made in its basic research and clinical application. Besides anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects, heparin also has antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and other pharmacological activities. It is widely used clinically in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, lung diseases, kidney diseases, cancer, etc., as the first anticoagulant medicine in COVID-19 exerts anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. At the same time, however, it also leads to a lot of adverse reactions, such as bleeding, thrombocytopenia, elevated transaminase, allergic reactions, and others. This article comprehensively reviews the modern research progress of heparin compounds; discusses the structure, preparation, and adverse reactions of heparin; emphasizes the pharmacological activity and clinical application of heparin; reveals the possible mechanism of the therapeutic effect of heparin in related clinical applications; provides evidence support for the clinical application of heparin; and hints on the significance of exploring the wider application fields of heparin.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a pathological state of many abnormal metabolic sections. These abnormalities are closely related to diabetes, heart pathologies and other vascular diseases. Danggui-Shaoyao-San (DSS) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula that has been used as a therapy for Alzheimer’s disease. DSS has rarely been reported in the application of MetS and its mechanism of how it improves gut microbia dysbiosis and hepatic lipid homeostasis. In this study, three extracts of DSS were obtained using water, 50% methanol in water and methanol as extracting solvents. Their chemical substances were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass (UPLC-Q/TOF-MS). Pharmacodynamic effect of the extracts were evaluated by comparison of biochemical factors, 16S rRNA sequencing test for gut microbiota analysis, as well as metabonomic and transcriptomic assessments on liver tissues from fructose-fed rats. This study aimed at investigating DSS’s mechanism of regulating blood lipid, anti-inflammation and reducing blood glucose. The results showed that the 50% methanol extract (HME) was more effective. It was worth noting that hydroxysteroid 17β-dehydrogenase 13 (HSD17β13) as a critical element of increasing blood lipid biomarker-triglyceride (TG), was decreased markedly by DSS. The influence from upgraded hydroxysteroid 17β-dehydrogenase 7 (HSD17β7) may be stronger than that from downgraded Lactobacillus in the aspect of regulating back blood lipid biomarker-total cholesterol (TC). The differential down-regulation of tumornecrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and the significant up-regulation of Akkermansia showed the effective effect of anti-inflammation by DSS. The declining glycine and alanine induced the lowering glucose and lactate. It demonstrated that DSS slowed down the reaction of gluconeogenesis to reduce the blood glucose. The results demonstrated that DSS improved pathological symptoms of MetS and some special biochemical factors in three aspects by better regulating intestinal floras and improving hepatic gene expressions and metabolites.

The three-axis coil system is most commonly used in magnetic field measurement. The coil constant is an important parameter. We demonstrate a method to measure the coil constant based on the Larmor frequency. An elliptically polarized light is used to simultaneously excite the spin orientation and spin alignment via synchronous optical pumping. And then the coil system can be calibrated by measuring the magnetic resonance frequency of Bell-Bloom magnetometer. The advantage of this method is that the coil constants of all three directions can be obtained without any active adjustments. It is important for some applications, such as measuring the biological magnetic field with the integrated magnetometer. The method for calibration of a three-axis coil system is experimentally exploited. The experimental results show that the calibration accuracy of pT level can be achieved.

Psoriasis, an incurable autoimmune skin disease, is one of the most common immune-mediated disorders. Presently, numerous clinical research studies are underway, and treatment options are available. However, these treatments focus on improving symptoms of the disease and fail to achieve a radical cure; they also have certain toxic side effects. In recent years, natural products have increasingly gained attention because of their high efficiency and low toxicity. Despite their obvious therapeutic effects, natural products’ biological activity was limited by their instability, poor solubility, and low bioavailability. Novel drug delivery systems, including liposomes, lipospheres, nanostructured lipid carriers, niosomes, nanoemulsions, nanospheres, microneedles, ethosomes, nanocrystals, and foams could potentially overcome the limitations of poor water solubility and permeability in traditional drug delivery systems. Thus, to achieve a therapeutic effect, the drug can reach the epidermis and dermis in psoriatic lesions to interact with the immune cells and cytokines.

Hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogels have applied widely for biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, the use of initiators or crosslinkers during the hydrogel formation may cause cytotoxicity and thereby impair the biocompatibility. Inspired by the crosslinking mechanism of fibrin gel, a novel HA-based hydrogel was developed via the in situ supramolecular assembly based on knob-hole interactions between fibrinogen and knob-grafted HA (knob-g-HA) in this study. The knob-grafted HA was synthesized by coupling knob peptides (GPRPAAC, a mimic peptide of fibrin knob A) to HA via Michael addition. Then the translucent fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogels were prepared by simply mixing the solutions of knob-g-HA and fibrinogen at the knob/hole ratio of 1.2. The rheological behaviors of the fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogels with the fibrinogen concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg/mL were evaluated, and it was found that the dynamic storage moduli (G′) were higher than the loss moduli (G″) over the whole frequency range for all the groups. The SEM results showed that fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogels presented the heterogeneous mesh-like structures which were different from the honeycomb-like structures of fibrinogen/MA-HA hydrogels. Correspondingly, a higher swelling ratio was obtained in the groups of fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogel. Finally, the cytocompatibility of fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogels was proved by live/dead stainings and MTT assays in the 293T cells encapsulation test. All these results highlight the biological potential of the fibrinogen/knob-g-HA hydrogels for 3D cellular engineering.

Optically pumped atomic magnetometers operating in the spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) regime play increasingly important roles in magnetoencephalography measurements. In this application, a multichannel arrangement is necessary. A method to construct the multichannel system is to arrange multiple individual sensor modules, where each sensor module is designed in the one-beam configuration with the necessary magnetic modulation. However, such an arrangement restricts the spatial resolution, affects the uniformity of the sensor characteristics, and increases the system complexity. To address these issues, we developed a compact multichannel pump-probe configuration magnetometer based on a single vapor cell. Each channel of the multichannel system shares the same vapor cell. As a result, the influence of different cells is eliminated. Further, a two-beam configuration with an independent pump and probe beam is introduced. Compared with the one-beam configuration, the two-beam magnetometer achieves a higher sensitivity and does not require extra magnetic modulation. And then the magnetic field crosstalk between adjacent channels can be avoided. A sensitivity of 10 fT/Hz1/2 at 2 Hz is achieved for all channels. Using the compact multichannel magnetometer, an auditory evoked response is clearly observed. If more channels are required, the arrangement based on the single vapor cell configuration can be easily expanded by applying the photodiode with more than four quadrants.

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), as a gut-derived metabolite, has been found to be associated with enhanced risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. We presented a method for targeted profiling of TMAO and betaine in serum and food samples based on a combination of one-step sample pretreatment and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The key step included a processing of sample preparation using a selective solid-phase extraction column for retention of basic metabolites. Proton signals at δ 3.29 and δ 3.28 were employed to quantify TMAO and betaine, respectively. The developed method was examined with acceptable linear relationship, precision, stability, repeatability, and accuracy. It was successfully applied to detect serum levels of TMAO and betaine in TMAO-fed mice and high-fructose-fed rats and also used to determine the contents of TMAO and betaine in several kinds of food, such as fish, pork, milk, and egg yolk.
