In this study, the origins of efficiency gains in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells are investigated by introducing an Al2O3 passivation layer in terms of the oxidation condition of Mo back contact, alkali‐metal diffusion, minority carrier lifetimes (τ), and charge conditions. The study reveals that introduction of an Al2O3 back‐contact passivation layer into solar cells yields multiple impacts. Al2O3 deposition enhances the oxidation of the Mo back contacts, increasing Na solubility in Mo and Na diffusion from Mo into the CIGS layer, thereby modifying the metastable properties of CIGS. The charge condition at the CIGS/Al2O3 interface is not fixed negative charge but variable, dependent on whether electrons or holes are supplied. During solar cell operation, the interfacial charge condition is expected to be neutral or positive for Al2O3 grown using plasma or thermal atomic layer deposition techniques, respectively. Moreover, the mechanical peeling off of CIGS from Mo back contact enhanced τ in a similar way as with the insertion of Al2O3. Based on this study, the enhancement of alkali metal supply and the removal of direct contact of CIGS to the metal contact (Mo) can play crucial roles in improving the performance of CIGS solar cell. Photovoltaic energy conversion is expected to contribute to creation of a clean energy society and high‐performance solar cells are very attractive for realizing such a vision. The development of high‐performance solar cells offers a promising pathway toward achieving high power per unit cost for many applications. Although state of the art of some of single‐junction solar cells are approaching the Shockley–Queisser limit of 32–33%, further improvements in efficiencies of solar cell and modules are thought to be possible. Herein, efficiency improvements in various single‐junction solar cells are overviewed in this article and several losses of high‐efficiency single‐junction solar cells are discussed about. Perspective of single‐junction solar cells from the viewpoint of practically feasible efficiency based on scientific and technological arguments is also presented. The dielectric functions of co-evaporated Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and Cu2SnSe3 (CTSe) polycrystalline layers are determined accurately from self-consistent spectroscopic ellipsometry analyses. To minimize the effects of the compositional modulation and light scattering induced by rough surfaces, quite thin CZTSe and CTSe layers (<50 nm) having the single-phase stoichiometric compositions are characterized. The dielectric functions of CZTSe and CTSe show rather similar spectral features with almost identical critical point energies for the transition peaks at 2.4 and 3.9 eV. The CTSe dielectric function, however, indicates strong free carrier absorption, expressed by the Drude model, due to high p-type conductivity in the layer. We find that CZTSe and CTSe show quite large absorption coefficients exceeding 105cm-1 at 2.0 eV with band gap values of 0.91 ± 0.02 eV and 0.68 ± 0.05 eV, respectively. To characterize the optical transition in CZTSe in more detail, the dielectric response of each interband transition is calculated by applying density functional theory. The calculation result reveals that the strong visible light absorption in CZTSe is induced by the high joint density of states at the P point in the Brillouin zone. The optical constants of CZTSe and CTSe deduced in this study are further parameterized in an energy range up to 6.0 eV by expressing the transition peaks using the Tauc-Lorentz model. The efficiency potential of chalcopyrite and kesterite solar cells including CIGSe (CuInGaSe2), CIGS (CuInGaS2), CZTS (Cu2ZnSnS4) and CZTSSe [Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4] solar cells is discussed based on external radiative efficiency (ERE), open-circuit voltage loss, fill factor loss, non-radiative recombination and resistance loss. CIGSe cells achieve efficiency potential of 26.8% and 27.5% by improving the ERE from around 1% to 10% and 20%, respectively. CIGS and CZTS(Se) cells achieve the efficiency potential of 25% and 22%, respectively, by improvement in ERE from around 1 × 10−4% to 3%–5%. The effects of non-radiative recombination and resistance loss upon the properties of wide-bandgap CIGSe, CIGS and CZTS(Se) cells are discussed. In the case of wide-bandgap CIGSe cells, lattice mismatching between the buffer layer and CIGSe active layer and deep-level defects are thought to originate from non-radiative recombination loss. The continuous-time pipelined(CTP) ADC is an emerging analog-to-digital converter that combines anti-alias filtering and quantization in a single unit. It presents a resistive input impedance making it easy to drive, and places relaxed requirements on amplifiers used in the ADC. The CTP ADC attempts to address many of the challenges of discrete-time pipelined analog-to-digital conversion. This brief is a first-principles introduction to this recent architecture. We performed a comparative study to find out the reasons why it is necessary to prepare the pure sulfide chalcopyrite, Cu(InGa)S2 (CIGS) under a Cu‐deficient condition to improve solar cell performance. It has been shown that CIGS that was grown under Cu‐deficient condition exhibits large open‐circuit voltage (VOC) boosting compared with that the one grown under Cu‐excess condition. Thus, CIGS were prepared from Cu‐excess and Cu‐deficient metal precursor (MP) and characterized concerning the origins of the different VOC. We observed that CIGS prepared using Cu‐excess MP suffered large recombination at buffer/CIGS interface and in bulk, which resulted in serious limitation of the VOC. On the other hand, CIGS prepared from Cu‐deficient MP exhibited largely improved VOC with reduced recombination. We conducted defect analysis using the photoluminescence (PL) method, and CIGS prepared using Cu‐excess MP exhibited strong deep emissions. However, CIGS prepared from Cu‐deficient MP exhibited PL emission characteristics without deep level transition. This implies that a large number of deep level defects exist in the CIGS prepared using Cu‐excess MP, and this might be the reason for the large recombination limiting VOC of the device. This study analyzes the electronic structure of Cu2ZnSn1–xGexSe4 (CZTGSe) surface and band alignments of CdS and CZTGSe using the Ge/(Sn + Ge) composition ratios of x = 0–1 based on inversed, ultraviolet, and X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy. The conduction band offsets of the CdS/CZTGSe interface linearly decrease with increasing x, which are so‐called spike conduction band connections, whereas the valence band offsets are observed to be independent of x. Moreover, the hole density near the CZTGSe surface increases with an increase in x; this corresponds to the increase in the measured built‐in‐potential with x. However, the open circuit voltage (VOC) saturates to ≈0.5 V for x over 0.2 in spite of the favorable band alignment and larger built‐in‐potential of x at the interface. External‐quantum‐efficiency spectral analysis shows that the carrier recombination in CZTGSe bulk is suppressed with an increase in x, whereas the recombination near the CZTGSe surface is enhanced. We have characterized amorphous In2O3:H (H : ∼4 at.%) transparent conducting films by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), thermal desorption spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and Hall measurements. The amorphous In2O3:H films have been fabricated at room temperature by sputtering of an In2O3 ceramic target under Ar, O2, and H2O vapor with variation of a flow ratio r(O2) = O2/(O2+Ar). We observe (i) signals originating from Ar in RBS spectra for all the films and (ii) desorption of H2O and Ar gases during post thermal annealing of the films. Furthermore, O2 desorption together with H2O and Ar is observed for the films grown at r(O2) > 0.375%, whereas In desorption together with H2O and Ar is observed for the films grown at r(O2) < 0.375%. These results suggest that the films have void and/or multi-vacancy rich structures inside the amorphous network, and the variety of atoms, such as Ar, H2O, and weakly bonded O and In, is present in the void structures for the films grown at O2-rich and O2-poor conditions, respectively. Corresponding to the structural changes, optical and electrical properties also change at r(O2) = 0.375%. For the films grown at r(O2) < 0.375%, we observe a broad absorption in the visible wavelengths that cannot be explained by free carrier absorption. In this film, the carrier mobility reduces rapidly with increasing carrier density. Analysis of spectroscopic ellipsometry and Hall measurements reveals that a large decrease in mobility is due to a large increase in carrier effective mass, in addition to the effect of ionized impurity scattering. In this article, we discuss the optical and transport properties with the variation of oxygen stoichiometry and microscopic structures in the amorphous In2O3:H films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
