BLOOD cell count , *PLATELET count , *BACTEREMIA , *ABSOLUTE value , *SURVIVAL analysis (Biometry) - Abstract
ABSTRACT Objectives Methods Results Conclusions Immature platelet fraction (IPF) for differentiating bacteremia has been explored, whereas its prognostic correlation remains uncertain. This study aims to confirm the predictive capability of IPF for bacteremia and investigate its association with prognosis.Patients with complete blood count (CBC) on the blood culture day (D1) and the preceding day (D0) were retrospectively recruited and categorized into bacteremia and nonbacteremia groups. Immature platelet (IP) analysis, alongside CBC, was conducted. Delta IPF, defined by the absolute values of D1 minus D0 results was calculated. The ability to distinguish bacteremia from nonbacteremia patients, and the correlation with mortality were analyzed. From February to December 2020, a total of 150 patients were enrolled, with 75 having bacteremia. The specificity for delta IPF ≥3.4% to predict bacteremia was 97.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 90.7–99.7). When delta IPF ≥3.4% combined with procalcitonin ≥0.5 (ng/mL), the sensitivity was 90.5% (95% CI: 69.6%–98.8%). Within the bacteremia group, delta IPF and the proportion of patients with delta IPF ≥1.5% were significantly higher in nonsurvival, while delta platelet levels did not. Furthermore, delta IPF ≥1.5% was independently associated with 30‐day mortality (adjusted odds ratio: 3.88, 95% CI: 1.2%–11.4%; p = 0.020). The 30‐day survival curve demonstrated a significant difference between patients with delta IPF ≥1.5% and those without (p < 0.001).Delta IPF correlates with mortality in bacteremia patients. Our findings suggest IPF not only helps detect bacteremia but also predicts prognosis in the early stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this thesis, I have examined the screen translation of Japanese politeness into Cantonese dubbing as well as Chinese subtitling at three difference levels: (a) face threatening acts; (b) frequently used politeness markers and (c) discernment aspect of politeness. It is not difficult to find equivalents in the target languages for the politeness strategies exploited in dealing with face threatening acts. However, the indirectness expressed through certain commonly adopted politeness markers (such as negative interrogative) in Japanese cannot be conveyed into our target languages easily. Translators also encounter some difficulties when they deal with the discernment aspect of Japanese politeness (i.e. the distinction between plain, formal and honorific form). Both target languages are able to distinguish politeness of two levels instead of three as observed in the Japanese original. Finally, the screen translation, especially the dubbed version, of the two films that I examined demonstrates the dual role of a translated text as not only a reproduction of the original text but also a text which has its function in the target culture.

- Abstract
The acknowledged high relationship between working memory and intelligence suggests common underlying cognitive mechanisms and, perhaps, shared biological substrates. If this is the case, improvement in working memory by repeated exposure to challenging span tasks might be reflected in increased intelligence scores. Here we report a study in which 288 university undergraduates completed the odd numbered items of four intelligence tests on time 1 and the even numbered items of the same tests one month later (time 2). In between, 173 participants completed three sessions, separated by exactly one week, comprising verbal, numerical, and spatial short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WMC) tasks imposing high processing demands (STM-WMC group). 115 participants also completed three sessions, separated by exactly one week, but comprising verbal, numerical, and spatial simple speed tasks (processing speed, PS, and attention, ATT) with very low processing demands (PS-ATT group). The main finding reveals increased scores from the pre-test to the post-test intelligence session (more than half a standard deviation on average). However, there was no differential improvement on intelligence between the STM-WMC and PS-ATT groups. (Contains 2 figures and 4 tables.)

- Abstract
Multitasking performance is relevant in everyday life and job analyses highlight the influence of multitasking over several diverse occupations. Intelligence is the best single predictor of overall job performance and it is also related to individual differences in multitasking. However, it has been shown that working memory capacity (WMC) is related to both intelligence and multitasking performance. Here we consider the simultaneous relationship among intelligence, WMC, and multitasking. The sample comprised three hundred and two applicants for air traffic control training courses. The main finding shows that intelligence and WMC are both related to multitasking, but only WMC predicts multitasking when their simultaneous relationship is considered. Furthermore, the processing and storage components of WMC predict multitasking performance. From an applied perspective it is suggested that WMC might be a relevant measure for personnel selection settings involving multitasking requirements. (Contains 1 table and 8 figures.)

12. Is Working Memory Fractionated onto Different Components of Intelligence? A Reply to Mackintosh and Bennett (2003)

- Abstract
A study was conducted in which 226 participants performed 12 tests, 6 thought to reflect verbal, quantitative, and spatial working memory (WM), and 6 of crystallized (Gc), fluid (Gf), and spatial (Gv) cognitive abilities. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were computed to test the unitary nature of the WM system. Six primary latent factors were obtained from the verbal, quantitative, and spatial tests. Three second-order latent factors were then obtained from the primary latent factors, following Mackintosh and Bennett's procedure ["Intelligence" 31 (2003) 519-531]. A very high correlation was observed among these second-order latent factors. Given this high correlation, those second-order latent factors were collapsed into a single second-order latent factor. The restricted model fitted the data as well as the base model. The result strongly supports the unitary nature of the WM system. It is proposed that this system can be conceived as a single pool of general purpose resources used to temporarily preserve a reliable mental representation of information about any task.

OLDER people ,HEPATOCELLULAR carcinoma ,LINCRNA ,GENETIC variation ,OLDER patients ,GENETIC polymorphisms ,SINGLE nucleotide polymorphisms - Abstract
Long noncoding (lnc)RNAs are reported to be key regulators of tumor progression, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The lncRNA long intergenic noncoding RNA 00673 (LINC00673) was indicated to play an important role in HCC progression, but the impacts of genetic variants (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) of LINC00673 on HCC remain unclear. A TaqMan allelic discrimination assay was performed to analyze the genotypes of three tagging SNPs, viz., rs9914618 G > A, rs6501551 A > G, and rs11655237 C > T, of LINC00673 in 783 HCC patients and 1197 healthy subjects. Associations of functional SNPs of LINC00673 with HCC susceptibility and clinicopathologic variables were analyzed by logistic regression models. After stratification by confounding factor, we observed that elderly patients (≥60 years) with the LINC00673 rs9914618 A allele had an increased risk of developing HCC under a codominant model (p = 0.025) and dominant model (p = 0.047). Moreover, elderly patients carrying the GA + AA genotype of rs9914618 exhibited a higher risk of having lymph node metastasis compared to those who were homozygous for the major allele (p = 0.013). Genotype screening of rs9914618 in HCC cell lines showed that cells carrying the AA genotype expressed higher LINC00673 levels compared to the cells carrying the GG genotype. Further analyses of clinical datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) showed that LINC00673 expressions were upregulated in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues, and were correlated with advanced clinical stages and poorer prognoses. In conclusions, our results suggested that the LINC00673 rs9914618 polymorphism may be a promising HCC biomarker, especially in elderly populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SYNCHRONOUS electric motors ,RELUCTANCE motors ,INDUCTION motors ,LINE drivers (Integrated circuits) ,METAL industry ,STRUCTURAL design - Abstract
With high surrounding temperatures, winding resistance increases and thus lowers the operational efficiency of a motor. To meet the large application requirements and conform with the ever-increasing energy-efficiency regulations for pump equipment in the metals industry, consistent efforts have focused on producing single-phase motors that can deliver superior performance at a low cost. Because the steady-state rotational speed is synchronized and no driver circuit is required, a direct-on-line synchronous reluctance motor is a potentially viable alternative to the commonly adopted induction motors. Its inherently simple structure and comparably low operational speed necessitate a challenging structural design for accomplishing the high-efficiency objectives of pump applications. These challenges and their potential solutions are reported in detail. By employing a systematic design scheme and including thermal concerns of the performance, a competitive high-efficiency single-phase direct-on-line synchronous reluctance motor for pump applications in various metal industry equipment was offered. [Background]: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is highly prevalent in women of child-bearing age. However, their nonhematological symptoms have been overlooked. This study aims to analyze the nonhematological features and symptoms of IDA in a group of women of reproductive age and the changes occurred during iron therapy., [Materials and Methods]: IDA women underwent dietary, physical activity, menstrual blood loss, and cognitive function assessment at baseline. Hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Executive attention was tested by the flanker task and working memory by the 2-back task. Oral iron therapy (ferrous sulfate) was given to 35 women for 8 weeks and the changes in iron status, biochemical markers, cognitive function, and nonhematological symptoms were evaluated., [Results]: Patients presented nonhematological symptoms: pica, 32.4%; cheilitis, 20.6%; restless legs syndrome (RLS), 20.6%; diffuse hair loss, 55.9%; and ungual alterations, 38.2%. Two or more symptoms were present in 58.8% of women. Serum iron and working memory were correlated at baseline. Multivariate analyses show associations (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI]) between pica and reaction time in the working memory test (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.19–3.87, p = 0.012); RLS with total serum protein (OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.06–0.92, p = 0.043); and cheilitis with mean corpuscular hemoglobin (OR 0.388, 95% CI 0.189–0.799, p = 0.01). Pica, cheilitis, and RLS completely resolved with iron therapy, and ungual alterations and hair loss improved in 92.3% and 84.2% of women, respectively. Better performance in executive attention and working memory was observed after iron therapy., [Conclusions]: More attention should be given to the nonhematological manifestations of IDA to improve the quality of life of menstruating women., This study was supported by project ref. 201170E15 from Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain.

Online activity was logged. Specifically, total activities carried out and five online activity measures were computed. One hundred and twenty university undergraduates participated in a Web-based course designed to train personnel trainers to apply ICT in training processes. Before starting the study, participants filled out a questionnaire designed to assess their frequency using ICT tools. At the end of the study, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire in order to collect information about their learning experience and their assessment of the virtual environment. Results suggest that previous experience significantly influences how people organize their online activities, but not the quantity of work carried out. Participants with more experience in the use of Internet tools, organize their work in the virtual classroom using less time and visiting fewer pages in each session. Previous experience did not influence the assessment of the virtual classroom as a training tool, since participants with both high and low previous experience gave extremely positive feedback on their Web-based learning experience. COLON cancer ,CANCER prognosis ,SIALYLTRANSFERASES ,SURVIVAL rate ,BIOINFORMATICS ,CANCER cells - Abstract
Sialylation of glycoproteins is modified by distinct sialyltransferases such as ST3Gal, ST6Gal, ST6GalNAc, or ST8SIA with α2,3-, α2,6-, or α2,8-linkages. Alteration of these sialyltransferases causing aberrant sialylation is associated with the progression of colon cancer. However, among the ST8- sialyltransferases, the role of ST8SIA6 in colon cancer remains poorly understood. In this study, we explored the involvement of ST8SIA6 in colon cancer using multiple gene databases. The relationship between ST8SIA6 expression and tumor stages/grades was investigated by UALCAN analysis, and Kaplan–Meier Plotter analysis was used to analyze the expression of ST8SIA6 on the survival outcome of colon cancer patients. Moreover, the biological functions of ST8SIA6 in colon cancer were explored using LinkedOmics and cancer cell metabolism gene DB. Finally, TIMER and TISMO analyses were used to delineate ST8SIA6 levels in tumor immunity and immunotherapy responses, respectively. ST8SIA6 downregulation was associated with an advanced stage and poorly differentiated grade; however, ST8SIA6 expression did not affect the survival outcomes in patients with colon cancer. Gene ontology analysis suggested that ST8SIA6 participates in cell surface adhesion, angiogenesis, and membrane vesicle trafficking. In addition, ST8SIA6 levels affected immunocyte infiltration and immunotherapy responses in colon cancer. Collectively, these results suggest that ST8SIA6 may serve as a novel therapeutic target towards personalized medicine for colon cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study provides the results from the implementation of a highly structured therapist‐guided iCBT programme for people with work‐related anxiety and depression, in terms of programme efficacy, participants' adherence and satisfaction. Seventy‐seven national police workers were randomly allocated to one of two groups: without additional videoconference sessions (web platform with guidance of therapist) and with additional videoconference sessions (same intervention as the previous group, plus two videoconference guidance sessions with a psychologist). The intervention was composed of 12 sessions and took place for 17–20 weeks. We found an adherence rate of 36.4%, with no differences between groups. All participants endorsed lower depression (BDI‐II F(1) = 36.98, p <.001; ATQ F(1) = 24.22, p <.001), and anxiety (STAI‐State F(1) = 76.62, p <.001) after the programme. As a variable related to anxiety and depression in workplace, participants also showed higher assertiveness levels (RAS F(1) = 8.96, p <.001). A significant reduction of the mean level of anxiety perceived by participants as the intervention programme progressed was observed in both groups (F(2) = 7.44; p =.003). Participants were satisfied with the therapists' intervention and with the programme. No significant group effects were found for any of the measures. Reduction in depression levels was maintained in the 12‐month follow‐up, but levels of anxiety increased. This study is innovative, as it is the first controlled trial to analyse the effect of two added videoconference sessions, and it includes short‐ and long‐term measures, which is not usual. The results are discussed to clarify the role of the contact with the therapist to improve treatment adherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To meet the severe operating conditions in the metal industry, more thorough design and operational assessments about those implemented electric motors for specific applications must be emphasized. With its inherent robust structure, the induction motor is generally adopted to fulfill such driven objective. However, due to global warming and energy conservation concerns, those strictly enforced regulations have potentially increased the complexity and cost of high efficiency induction motor. Since the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) has relatively simpler structure with no copper loss in its rotor, it is a very attractive alternative for accomplishing the high-efficiency objectives of those common hoist, punch, roller, and pump applications. In addition, to eliminate drive circuits that can further reduce the overall system construction costs, the rotor barriers of the SynRM can be equipped with direct-on-line capability (DOL_SynRM) with conductors filled in. The impacts to the operational performance of these DOL_SynRMs for different applications will all be thoroughly investigated. The competitive high-efficiency DOL_SynRMs for driving various metal industry equipment can thus be offered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To meet different loading requirements in the metal industry, special attention must be paid to the operational performances and start-up characteristics of those electric motors implemented for desired driven applications. However, because of the global warming and energy conservation concerns, the enforced operational regulations have increased the complexity of those commonly applied induction motors for supplying the desired equipment driven forces. By adopting the same stator, the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) can be achieved with properly redesigned rotor structure of an induction motor. Due to its robust structure and lack of secondary copper loss, it is very competitive for the related hoist, punch, roller, and pump applications. Furthermore, by inserting adequate ferrite permanent magnets and conductors into the rotor barriers, composition designs of the direct-on-line SynRMs (DOL_SynRMs) will also be proposed. The operational characteristics of the DOL_SynRMs for fulfilling different specifications will all be thoroughly investigated and confirmed by experimental measurements. The DOL_SynRM structures that can provide potential alternatives for related high-efficiency metal industry-driven applications can thus be validated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper utilizes the reconstructive nature of translation to examine how formal (neutral and honorific) and plain forms of Japanese are represented in Cantonese dubbing with the aim of exploring some common politeness features of Cantonese that the translator adopts in order to compensate for the difference between the two languages. Address terms that do not exist in the Japanese original, for example deferential terms and kinship terms, are inserted in Cantonese dubbing to represent different speech levels of Japanese. This paper further argues that such inserted address terms help to realize politeness by either recognizing the superior status of addressees or by including an addressee as an in-group member. Some cases of insertions also suggest strategic adoption of address terms in Cantonese. In addition to observing social norms and addressing each other appropriately, Cantonese speakers can also exploit address terms strategically to achieve specific pragmatic goals. We investigated the translational and rotational dynamics of water molecules in mesoporous silica materials MCM-41-S and MCM-48-S using the incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering technique. The range of wave vector transfers Q covered in the measurements was from 0.27 to 1.93 Å[SUP-1] broad enough to detect both the translational and rotational contributions to the scattering. We used the relaxing-cage models for both translational and rotational motions which we developed earlier, to analyze the QENS spectra and investigated water dynamics in a supercooled range from 250 to 280 K. The results show a marked slowing down of both the translational and rotational relaxation times, and an increasing effect of confinement on the translational motion, as the temperature is lowered. Background: Multistage adaptive testing has recently emerged as an alternative to the computerized adaptive test. The current study details a new multistage test to assess fl uid intelligence. Method: An item pool of progressive matrices with constructed response format was developed, and divided into six subtests. The subtests were applied to a sample of 724 college students and their psychometric properties were studied (i.e., reliability, dimensionality and validity evidence). The item pool was calibrated under the graded response model, and two multistage structures were developed, based on the automatic test assembly principles. Finally, the test information provided by each structure was compared in order to select the most appropriate one. Results: The item pool showed adequate psychometric properties. From the two compared multistage structures, the simplest structure (i.e., routing test and two modules in the next stages) were more informative across the latent trait continuum and were therefore kept. Discussion: Taken together, the results of the two studies support the application of the FIMT (Fluid Intelligence Multistage Test), a multistage test to assess fl uid intelligence accurately and innovatively, Antecedentes: los test adaptativos multietapa han emergido recientemente como una alternativa a los test adaptativos informatizados. To meet the higher operational efficiency regulations of electric motors due to energy-conservation concerns, specific design efforts have been dedicated to those motors for different industrial application requirements. Since the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) is generally designed based on the same stator structure as that of the induction motor and operated at synchronous speed, whereas no electrical contact to its rotor, it is capable of providing a robust structure and no rotor copper loss. Such features are very attractive for the related hoist, punch, roller, and pump applications that are commonly adopted in the metals industry. By equipping adequate power factor correction and line-start capabilities, the detailed designs and performance analyses of the SynRMs with a common rotor structure composed by laminated electrical steels will be proposed. Based on this common rotor structure, the operational characteristics of the SynRMs for fulfilling different specifications will all be thoroughly investigated. Confirmed by experimental validations, valuable guidance for related SynRM constructions and applications can thus be provided for metals industry and motor designers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En cuanto a la relación entre la medida de Confianza y otras variables disposicionales y conductuales, se obtuvieron correlaciones significativas con Cordialidad (r = .376), y en mujeres también con Apertura a la Experiencia (r = .135), The significance that trust has in social exchange relationships has led to a growing amount of literature dealing with this phenomenon at a theoretical and an applied level. With the aim of conducting trust research by means of an instrument with established reliability and validity, the General Trust Scale (Yamagishi & Yamagishi, 1994) was translated into Spanish. The sample comprised 626 participants. Results indicate that the Spanish adaptation has satisfactory psychometric properties: test's reliability (α = .862) and items' discrimination (a ≥ 1.58). There was no differential item functioning regarding the participants’ gender, but differences aroused as regards to their age. The relationship with several dispositional and be-havioral variables was assessed, being significant its correlation with Agree-ableness (r = .376) and, for the women, also with Openness to Experience (r = .135)

To meet the increasingly stringent regulations on operational efficiencies of electric motors, efforts have been devoted to design and construct motors with less power losses. Without the need of rotor conductors, and hence, no secondary copper loss, the feasibilities of applying synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) have attracted many attentions on the related industries. Since the operation of SynRM is mainly based on the reluctance torque, appropriate electromagnetic steel selections for the motors will be the key factors. To adequately evaluate the performance of SynRM, with the available magnetization and hysteresis characteristics of the commercial steel sheets, the SynRMs that are composed of different electromagnetic steels at various operational specifications will be thoroughly investigated. From theoretical analyses of the selected SynRMs by different stator and rotor material compositions along with experimental validations, valuable guidance for related SynRM constructions and operations can thus be provided for steel manufacturers and motor designers. RELUCTANCE motors ,TORQUE ,PERMANENT magnets ,MAGNETIC devices ,FINITE element method - Abstract
By appropriately inserting ferrite magnets into the rotor of a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM), the machine operational power factors and torque outputs can be improved. With specific rotor structures to accommodate those ferrites, many of these permanent-magnet-assisted SynRMs (PMA-SynRMs) have been proposed to comply the expected operational objectives. For construction convenience, the ferrites that being inserted into the flux barriers of these PMA-SynRMs are generally in rectangular shapes; hence, some adjustments on the rotor flux barriers and additional bridges are required. Such changes will inevitably affect the performance of the original SynRMs with optimized rotor structures, and these tradeoffs are thus to be recovered by parts of those adopted ferrites. This paper will provide an evaluation index that can characterize the performance of PMA-SynRMs with different volume compositions of the ferrites, along with the impact assessments of the SynRMs with modified flux barriers such that those ferrites can be properly allocated. Based on the designs obtained from thorough 3-D finite-element analyses, a 3-hp PMA-SynRM will be constructed and the related experimental measurements will also be supported to validate the design adequacies. Storage-oriented memory span tasks with no explicit concurrent processing are usually referred as short-term memory (STM) tasks, whereas tasks involving storage plus concurrent processing requirements are designated as working memory (WM) tasks. The present study explores a question that remains unsolved: Do STM and WM tasks clearly tap distinguishable theoretical constructs? For that purpose, a large sample of 403 participants was tested through 12 diverse memory span tasks. Half of those tasks are widely accepted as measures of STM, whereas the other half measure WM. The results show that STM and WM share largely overlapping underlying capacity limitations, suggesting that all memory span tasks tap essentially the same construct. Some implications are discussed. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a typical inflammation-associated cancer, and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common histopathological subtype. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are the most common driver mutations of LUAD, and they have been identified as important therapeutic targets by EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Interleukin (IL)-17A secreted by T-helper 17 lymphocytes is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in cancer pathogenesis. The present study was designed to investigate the possible associations among IL-17A genetic polymorphisms, EGFR mutation status, and the clinicopathologic development of LUAD in a Taiwanese population. Our study population consisted of 277 LUAD patients harboring the wild-type (WT) EGFR or a mutant (MT) EGFR. Four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-17A in the peripheral blood, including rs8193036(C > T), rs8193037(G > A), rs2275913(G > A), and rs3748067(C > T) loci, were genotyped using a TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. Our results showed that none of these IL-17A SNPs were correlated with the risk of developing mutant EGFR. However, patients with a smoking habit who carried the GA genotype of IL-17A rs8193037 had a significantly lower susceptibility to EGFR mutations (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 0.225; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.056~0.900, p = 0.035). Moreover, compared to individuals carrying the CC genotype of rs8193036 at IL-17A, T-allele carriers (CT + TT) were at higher risk of developing more-advanced stages (stage III or IV; p = 0.020). In the WT EGFR subgroup analysis, IL-17A rs8193036 T-allele carriers had higher risks of developing an advanced tumor stage (p = 0.016) and lymphatic invasion (p = 0.049). Further analyses of clinical datasets revealed correlations of IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) and IL-17RC expressions with a poor prognosis of LUAD patients with a smoking history or with higher levels of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. In conclusion, our results suggested that two functional promoter polymorphisms of IL-17A, i.e., rs8193036 and rs8193037, were associated with the EGFR mutation status and progression in LUAD patients, indicating that these two genetic variants might act as possible markers for predicting patients' clinical prognoses. Lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) is a major subtype of lung cancer, particularly among populations of East Asia. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is the most frequently mutated oncogene promoting LADC progression and can serve as a therapeutic target in LADC. The tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-3 is a major regulator of extracellular matrix turnover via targeting of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and thus, plays a critical role in tumor development and progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential associations among TIMP-3 genetic polymorphisms, EGFR statuses, and cancer clinicopathologic development in patients with LADC. In this study, 277 LADC patients with different EGFR statuses were recruited to dissect the allelic discrimination of TIMP-3 -1296 T>C (rs9619311), TIMP3 249T>C (rs9862), and TIMP3 261C>T (rs11547635) polymorphisms using a TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. Our data showed that compared to those LADC patients with wild-type CC homozygotes of TIMP-3 rs9862, patients harboring TT homozygotes of rs9862 were at a higher risk of developing mutant EGFR (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.530; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.230–5.205; p = 0.012), particularly the EGFR L858R point mutation (AOR = 2.975; 95% CI: 1.182–7.488; p = 0.021). Moreover, we observed that TIMP-3 TT homozygotes of rs9862 were correlated with the incidence of EGFR mutations in patients with a smoking habit (p = 0.045). Within male patients harboring a mutant EGFR, TIMP-3 rs9862 T (CT+TT) allele carriers were at higher risk of developing an advanced stage (p = 0.025) and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.043). Further analyses of clinical datasets revealed correlations of TIMP-3 expression with a favorable prognosis in patients with LADC. In conclusion, the data suggest that TIMP-3 rs9862 polymorphisms may contribute to identify subgroups of lung cancer patients at high risk for tumor progression, among carriers of LADC-bearing mutant EGFR. SERUM ,BLOOD plasma ,C-reactive protein ,HOSPITAL patients - Abstract
Background: We have observed discrepancies between C-reactive protein (CRP) measured in serum prepared from a serum separator tube (SST) and that obtained from a plain tube, when using the Vitros CRP assay. Our study aimed at elucidating the cause of these discrepancies. Methods: Eighty-seven specimens from hospitalized patients with various types of inflammatory disease were analysed using a fixed-point immuno-rate method on a Vitros CRP slide. The serum was prepared simultaneously in both vacuum and SSTs. We also performed mixing tests by adding 47 samples of serum prepared from plain tubes to SSTs and incubating for 15 min before CRP analysis. Results: Lower values of CRP were found in serum prepared from plain tubes than in serum from SSTs. Addition of serum prepared from plain tubes to SSTs and incubating for 15 min increased the CRP values significantly. The ratio of CRP measured in serum prepared from plain tubes and from SSTs did not differ significantly from the ratio obtained when serum was prepared in a plain tube then added to an SST. Discussion: We propose that SSTs can adsorb some macromolocules that form complexes with CRP. The addition of SST gel to serum results in the release of CRP molecules from these complexes, which enhances the antigen-antibody reaction on the Vitros CRP slide and increases the measured CRP concentrations. - Abstract
Background: GO-Y078, a new synthetic analogue of curcumin (CUR), has higher oral bioavailability and anticancer activity than CUR, but the oncostatic effect of GO-Y078 on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is largely unknown., Research Design and Methods: In the present study, we examined the oncostatic properties and possible mechanisms of GO-Y078 on human SCC-9 and HSC-3 OSCC cells., Results: Our results indicated that GO-Y078 showed a cytostatic effect against OSCC cells, and this antiproliferative phenomenon stemmed from a mechanism involving multiple levels of cooperation, including cell-cycle G
2 /M arrest and apoptosis induction. Mechanistically, GO-Y078 treatment induced caspase-mediated apoptosis via upregulating two apoptosis-modulating proteins, SMAC/DIABLO and heme oxygenase (HO)-1. GO-Y078 transcriptionally induced upregulation of the HO-1 gene by increasing the AP-1 DNA-binding activity, which was initiated by activation of the p38 /JNK1/2 pathways. In the clinic, patients with head and neck cancers expressed lower HO-1 and SMAC/DIABLO levels in primary cancer tissues compared to normal tissues. Clinical datasets also revealed that patients with head and neck cancers expressing high HO-1 had afavorable prognosis., Conclusions: Our results provide new insights into the role of GO-Y078-induced molecular regulation in suppressing OSCC growth and suggest that GO-Y078 has potential therapeutic applications for OSCC.- Published

- Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is highly prevalent in women of child-bearing age. However, their nonhematological symptoms have been overlooked. This study aims to analyze the nonhematological features and symptoms of IDA in a group of women of reproductive age and the changes occurred during iron therapy. Materials and Methods: IDA women underwent dietary, physical activity, menstrual blood loss, and cognitive function assessment at baseline. Hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Executive attention was tested by the flanker task and working memory by the 2-back task. Oral iron therapy (ferrous sulfate) was given to 35 women for 8 weeks and the changes in iron status, biochemical markers, cognitive function, and nonhematological symptoms were evaluated. Results: Patients presented nonhematological symptoms: pica, 32.4%; cheilitis, 20.6%; restless legs syndrome (RLS), 20.6%; diffuse hair loss, 55.9%; and ungual alterations, 38.2%. Two or more symptoms were present in 58.8% of women. Serum iron and working memory were correlated at baseline. Multivariate analyses show associations (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI]) between pica and reaction time in the working memory test (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.19-3.87, p = 0.012); RLS with total serum protein (OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.06-0.92, p = 0.043); and cheilitis with mean corpuscular hemoglobin (OR 0.388, 95% CI 0.189-0.799, p = 0.01). Pica, cheilitis, and RLS completely resolved with iron therapy, and ungual alterations and hair loss improved in 92.3% and 84.2% of women, respectively. Better performance in executive attention and working memory was observed after iron therapy. Conclusions: More attention should be given to the nonhematological manifestations of IDA to improve the quality of life of menstruating women., Competing Interests: No competing financial interests exist., (© Fernandez-Jimenez et al. 2020; Published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.)

- Abstract
In presence of 7.5 microM of curcumin, no embryos or larva of zebrafish survived 3 days of incubation; however, coincubation with 144 microg/ml silymarin increased the survival rates of curcumin-treated embryos and larvae to about 70%. Moreover, in presence of 12.5 microM curcumin, all embryos died after 2 days of incubation; however, co-treatment with 144 microg/ml silymarin increased the survival rates of curcumin-treated embryos and larvae up to 60 and 50%, respectively. This protective effect was not found in the other phenolic compounds viz., ferulic acid, naringin, or crocin, tested. Finally, using a fluorescence microscope, accumulation of less curcumin has observed in the edema sac area of the larvae co-treated with curcumin and silymarin than in the larvae treated with curcumin only. The result suggests that the protective effects of silymarin may be due to a decreased accumulation of curcumin in the fish body.
