Abstract

The Balloon-borne Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) is configured with a solenoidal superconducting magnet and a suite of precision particle detectors, including time-of-flight hodoscopes based on plastic scintillators, a silica-aerogel Cherenkov detector, and a high resolution tracking system with a central jet-type drift chamber. The charges of incident particles are determined from energy losses in the scintillators. Their magnetic rigidities (momentum/charge) are measured by reconstructing each particle trajectory in the magnetic field, and their velocities are obtained by using the time-of-flight system. Together, these measurements can accurately identify helium isotopes among the incoming cosmic-ray helium nuclei up to energies in the GeV per nucleon region. The BESS-Polar I instrument flew for 8.5 days over Antarctica from December 13th to December 21st, 2004. Its long-duration flight and large geometric acceptance allow the time variations of isotopic fluxes to be studied for the first time. The time variations of helium isotope fluxes are presented here for rigidities from 1.2 to 2.5 GV and results are compared to previously reported proton data and neutron monitor data.

Abstract

In two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica, the BESS-Polar collaboration has searched for antihelium in the cosmic radiation with higher sensitivity than any reported investigation. BESS- Polar I flew in 2004, observing for 8.5 days. BESS-Polar II flew in 2007-2008, observing for 24.5 days. No antihelium candidate was found in BESS-Polar I data among 8.4\times 10^6 |Z| = 2 nuclei from 1.0 to 20 GV or in BESS-Polar II data among 4.0\times 10^7 |Z| = 2 nuclei from 1.0 to 14 GV. Assuming antihelium to have the same spectral shape as helium, a 95% confidence upper limit of 6.9 \times 10^-8 was determined by combining all the BESS data, including the two BESS-Polar flights. With no assumed antihelium spectrum and a weighted average of the lowest antihelium efficiencies from 1.6 to 14 GV, an upper limit of 1.0 \times 10^-7 was determined for the combined BESS-Polar data. Abstract

Measurement of cosmic-ray proton, antiproton and muon spectra was carried out at mountain altitude. We observed 2 x 10^5 protons and 10^2 antiprotons in a kinetic energy region of 0.25 -- 3.3 GeV. Zenith-angle dependence of proton fluxes was obtained. Atmospheric muon spectra were measured simultaneously. Abstract

A quasi-monoenergetic neutron field generated in the ^7Li(p, n) reaction consists of a high-energy monoenergetic peak and a continuum to the low-energy region. In this study, the spectral fluence of the continuum was measured with the time-of-flight (TOF) method using a ^6Li-glass scintillation detector and an organic liquid scintillation detector for the keV and MeV region, respectively. The neutron spectral fluence was determined down to the keV region by implementing a new beam chopping system and the results showed that the neutrons that came directly from the target had a lower energy limit about 100 keV. Discussions were made also on the effect of the time-independent neutrons which are assumed to be room-scattered neutrons. The obtained information is expected to contribute to understanding the quasi-monoenergetic high-energy neutron field and improvements of calibrating neutron detectors in the field. Abstract

The 8 and 27 keV monoenergetic neutron calibration fields have been developed by using 45Sc(p, n)45Ti reaction. Protons from a 4-MV Pelletron accelerator are used to bombard a thin scandium target evaporated onto a platinum disc. The proton energies are finely adjusted to the resonance to generate the 8 and 27 keV neutrons by applying a high voltage to the target assemblies. The neutron energies were measured using the time-of-flight method with a lithium glass scintillation detector. The neutron fluences at a calibration point located at 50 cm from the target were evaluated using Bonner spheres. A long counter was placed at 2.2 m from the target and at 60° to the direction of the proton beam in order to monitor the fluence at the calibration point. Fluence and dose equivalent rates at the calibration point are sufficient to calibrate many types of the neutron survey metres. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Evaluation of the properties for quasi-monoenergetic neutron calibration fields of high energies more than 20 MeV at TIARA is proceeding for development of the field. Among the properties needed for the development as the standard calibration field, we report on measurement of the neutron beam profile using an imaging plate with a polyethylene converter and on estimation of the contribution of scattered neutrons into the irradiation field based on pulse height distribution at various off-beam positions measured using an organic liquid scintillation detector. Abstract: The Balloon-borne Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) was flown from Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada in August, 2000, during the maximum solar modulation period, with an average residual atmospheric overburden of 4.3g/cm2. Precise spectral measurements of cosmic ray hydrogen isotopes from 0.178GeV/n to 1.334GeV/n were made during the 28.7h of flight. Abstract: Target photons mixed in the 144, 250 and 565 keV mono-energetic neutron calibration fields were measured using a cylindrical NaI(Tl) detector with 7.62 cm both in diameter and in length. The ambient dose equivalent H*(10) of the photons was evaluated by applying the “G(E) function” to the measured pulse height spectrum. Neutrons induce photons by nuclear reactions in the NaI(Tl) detector and affect the pulse height spectrum. In order to eliminate the influence of these neutron events, the time-of-flight technique was applied with operating the accelerator in the pulse mode. The ratios by the ambient dose equivalent H*(10) of the photons to the 144, 250 and 565 keV neutrons were evaluated to be 3.3%, 4.7% and 0.9%, respectively. Although high energy photons ranging from 6 to 7 MeV are emitted by the 19F(p,αγ)16O reactions, the dose of the target photons is low enough to calibrate neutron dosemeters except for ones with high sensitivity to the photons. Abstract: In this paper, we report searches for antihelium in cosmic rays using two recently flown magnetic rigidity spectrometers. BESS-TeV had extended rigidity with an MDR of 1.4TV and had a flight duration of one day. BESS-Polar was optimized for collecting power. It was flown for 8.5 days and had an MDR of 240GV. The former flight allows us to explore a previously unexplored rigidity band and the latter flight yields a factor of three improvement in the overall BESS limit. No antihelium candidate was found in the rigidity ranges of 1–500GV, and 0.6–20GV, among 7×104 events taken with BESS-TeV, and 8×106 events taken with BESS-Polar, respectively. Abstract: Historically, there are been many searches for fractionally charged particles in the cosmic radiation. However, few searches have been performed near the top of the atmosphere. We performed a search for relativistic charged particles in cosmic rays using data collected during four BESS balloon flights from 1997 to 2000 carried out in northern Canada. The data were analyzed by examining energy deposition in the time-of-flight scintillator hodoscopes. No candidate was found. Abstract

The BESS-Polar Collaboration measured the energy spectra of cosmic-ray protons and helium during two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica in December 2004 and December 2007, at substantially different levels of solar modulation. Proton and helium spectra probe the origin and propagation history of cosmic rays in the galaxy, and are essential to calculations of the expected spectra of cosmic-ray antiprotons, positrons, and electrons from interactions of primary cosmic-ray nuclei with the interstellar gas, and to calculations of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We report absolute spectra at the top of the atmosphere for cosmic-ray protons in the kinetic energy range 0.2-160 GeV and helium nuclei 0.15-80 GeV/nucleon. The corresponding magnetic rigidity ranges are 0.6-160 GV for protons and 1.1-160 GV for helium. These spectra are compared to measurements from previous BESS flights and from ATIC-2, PAMELA, and AMS-02. We also report the ratio of the proton and helium fluxes from 1.1 GV to 160 GV and compare to ratios from PAMELA and AMS-02.

Abstract

In two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica, the Balloon-borne Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) collaboration has searched for antihelium in the cosmic radiation with the highest sensitivity reported. BESS-Polar I flew in 2004, observing for 8.5 days. BESS-Polar II flew in 2007-2008, observing for 24.5 days. No antihelium candidate was found in BESS-Polar I data among 8.4×10(6) |Z|=2 nuclei from 1.0 to 20 GV or in BESS-Polar II data among 4.0×10(7) |Z|=2 nuclei from 1.0 to 14 GV. Assuming antihelium to have the same spectral shape as helium, a 95% confidence upper limit to the possible abundance of antihelium relative to helium of 6.9×10(-8)} was determined combining all BESS data, including the two BESS-Polar flights. With no assumed antihelium spectrum and a weighted average of the lowest antihelium efficiencies for each flight, an upper limit of 1.0×10(-7) from 1.6 to 14 GV was determined for the combined BESS-Polar data. Under both antihelium spectral assumptions, these are the lowest limits obtained to date.

Abstract

The energy spectra of cosmic-ray low-energy antiprotons ( *p's) and protons ( p's) have been measured by BESS in 1999 and 2000, during a period covering reversal at the solar magnetic field. Based on these measurements, a sudden increase of the *p/p flux ratio following the solar magnetic field reversal was observed, and it generally agrees with a drift model of the solar modulation.

Abstract

The energy spectrum of cosmic-ray antiprotons ( &pmacr;'s) has been measured in the range 0.18-3.56 GeV, based on 458 &pmacr;'s collected by BESS in a recent solar-minimum period. We have detected for the first time a characteristic peak at 2 GeV of &pmacr;'s originating from cosmic-ray interactions with the interstellar gas. The peak spectrum is reproduced by theoretical calculations, implying that the propagation models are basically correct and that different cosmic-ray species undergo a universal propagation. Future BESS data with still higher statistics will allow us to study the solar modulation and the propagation in detail and to search for primary &pmacr; components.
