Astrophysics - Abstract
CMB-S4 is envisioned to be the ultimate ground-based cosmic microwave background experiment, crossing critical thresholds in our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. The CMB-S4 science case is spectacular: the search for primordial gravitational waves as predicted from inflation and the imprint of relic particles including neutrinos, unique insights into dark energy and tests of gravity on large scales, elucidating the role of baryonic feedback on galaxy formation and evolution, opening up a window on the transient Universe at millimeter wavelengths, and even the exploration of the outer Solar System. The CMB-S4 sensitivity to primordial gravitational waves will probe physics at the highest energy scales and cross a major theoretically motivated threshold in constraints on inflation. The CMB-S4 search for new light relic particles will shed light on the early Universe 10,000 times farther back than current experiments can reach. Finally, the CMB-S4 Legacy Survey covering 70% of the sky with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution from centimeter- to millimeter-wave observing bands will have a profound and lasting impact on Astronomy and Astrophysics and provide a powerful complement to surveys at other wavelengths, such as LSST and WFIRST, and others yet to be imagined. We emphasize that these critical thresholds cannot be reached without the level of community and agency investment and commitment required by CMB-S4. In particular, the CMB-S4 science goals are out of the reach of any projected precursor experiment by a significant margin.

The kinetic inductance detector (KID) is a versatile and scalable detector technology with a wide range of applications. These superconducting detectors offer significant advantages: simple and robust fabrication, intrinsic multiplexing that will allow thousands of detectors to be read out with a single microwave line, and simple and low cost room temperature electronics. These strengths make KIDs especially attractive for HEP science via mm-wave cosmological studies. Examples of these potential cosmological observations include studying cosmic acceleration (Dark Energy) through measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, precision cosmology through ultra-deep measurements of small-scale CMB anisotropy, and mm-wave spectroscopy to map out the distribution of cosmological structure at the largest scales and highest redshifts. The principal technical challenge for these kinds of projects is the successful deployment of large-scale high-density focal planes -- a need that can be addressed by KID technology. In this paper, we present an overview of microstrip-coupled KIDs for use in mm-wave observations and outline the research and development needed to advance this class of technology and enable these upcoming large-scale experiments., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

- Abstract
SuperSpec is an integrated, on-chip spectrometer for millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy. SuperSpec is demonstrating a proof-of-principle multi-beam spectrometer on the sky at the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in Mexico covering the 200 - 300 GHz frequency range with moderate resolution (R ~ 270 - 290). The dual-polarization, three-pixel instrument will consist of 6 SuperSpec spectrometer chips. We present the design and characterization of the devices being used in the first SuperSpec demonstration along with lab testing of the instrument performance.

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a dedicated 10-meter diameter telescope optimized for mm-wavelength surveys of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with arcminute resolution. The first instrument deployed at SPT features a 960 element array of horn-coupled bolometers. These devices consist of fully lithographed spider-web absorbers and aluminum-titanium bilayer transition edge sensors fabricated on adhesive-bonded silicon wafers with embedded metal backplanes. The focal plane is cooled using a closed cycle pulse-tube refrigerator, and read-out using Frequency Domain Multiplexed Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs.) Design features were chosen to optimize sensitivy in the atmospheric observing bands available from the ground, and for stability with the frequency domain multiplexed readout system employed at SPT, and performance was verified with a combination of laboratory tests and field observations. In 2008 the SPT surveyed 200 square-degrees at 150 and 220 GHz. These data have been analyzed using a cross-spectrum analysis and multi-band Markov Chain Monte Carlo parameter fitting using a model that includes lensed primary CMB anisotropy, secondary thermal (tSZ) and kinetic (kSZ) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich anisotropies, unclustered synchrotron point sources, and clustered dusty point sources. In addition to measuring the power spectrum of dusty galaxies at high signal-to-noise, the data primarily constrain a linear combination of the kSZ and tSZ anisotropy contributions (at 150 GHz and ell=3000): DtSZ3000 + 0.5 DkSZ3000 = 4.5 ± 1.0 &mu K2, and place the lowest limits yet measured on secondary anisotropy power.

Instrumentation And Photography - Abstract
Small size, wide spectral bandwidth, and highly multiplexed detector readout are required to develop powerful multi-beam spectrometers for high-redshift observations. Currently available spectrometers at these frequencies are large and bulky. The grating sizes for these spectrometers are prohibitive. This fundamental size issue is a key limitation for space-based spectrometers for astrophysics applications. A novel, moderate-resolving-power (R-700), ultra-compact spectrograph-on-a-chip for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths is the solution.

The third-generation South Pole Telescope camera is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background across three frequency bands (95, 150 and 220 GHz) with ~16,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers. Each multichroic pixel on a detector wafer has a broadband sinuous antenna that couples power to six TESs, one for each of the three observing bands and both polarization directions, via lumped element filters. Ten detector wafers populate the focal plane, which is coupled to the sky via a large-aperture optical system. Here we present the frequency band characterization with Fourier transform spectroscopy, measurements of optical time constants, beam properties, and optical and polarization efficiencies of the focal plane. The detectors have frequency bands consistent with our simulations, and have high average optical efficiency which is 86%, 77% and 66% for the 95, 150 and 220 GHz detectors. The time constants of the detectors are mostly between 0.5 ms and 5 ms. The beam is round with the correct size, and the polarization efficiency is more than 90% for most of the bolometers, Conference proceeding for Low Temperature Detectors 2017

SUPERCONDUCTING thin films ,ATOMIC layer deposition ,TITANIUM nitride ,PHOTON detectors ,THIN films analysis - Abstract
Superconducting thin films with high intrinsic kinetic inductance are of great importance for photon detectors, achieving strong coupling in hybrid systems, and protected qubits. We report on the performance of titanium nitride resonators, patterned on thin films (9–110 nm) grown by atomic layer deposition, with sheet inductances of up to 234 pH/□. For films thicker than 14 nm, quality factors measured in the quantum regime range from 0.2 to 1.0 × 10
6 and are likely limited by dielectric two-level systems. Additionally, we show characteristic impedances up to 28 kΩ, with no significant degradation of the internal quality factor as the impedance increases. These high impedances correspond to an increased single photon coupling strength of 24 times compared to a 50 Ω resonator, transformative for hybrid quantum systems and quantum sensing. The next generation of radiation detectors in high precision Cosmology, Astronomy, and particle-astrophysics experiments will rely heavily on superconducting microwave resonators and kinetic inductance devices. Understanding the physics of energy loss in these devices, in particular at low temperatures and powers, is vital. We present a comprehensive analysis framework, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, to characterize loss due to two-level system in concert with quasi-particle dynamics in thin-film Nb resonators in the GHz range. MULTIPLEXING ,OPTICAL detectors ,ELECTRONIC feedback ,INFRARED detectors - Abstract
The South Pole Telescope (SPT), like its precursor experiment APEX-SZ, makes mm-wavelength observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Both of these experiments utilize large-scale bolometer arrays with Frequency-Domain Multiplexing to read out multiple TES bolometers with one SQUID. Though Frequency-Domain Multiplexing was successfully demonstrated well before the deployment of the SPT, there were many system level details that needed to be dealt with when transitioning from a small-scale “proof-of-principle” system to a full kilo-pixel array that has to operate reliably in the field. These changes vary in scope from the thermal design of the bolometers themselves, to the SQUID feedback electronics and the software used to operate these electronics. In this paper we describe some of the systems-engineering details involved in building a multiplexed instrument such as the SPT receiver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOLOMETERS ,MACHINE design ,DETECTORS ,MICROWAVE antennas ,COSMIC background radiation ,MULTIPLEXING ,BANDWIDTHS - Abstract
In contemporary Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, bolometric detectors are often background limited, and in this case the sensitivity of instruments can only be improved by increasing the number of background-limited detectors, and so contemporary TES receivers contain as many pixels as possible. Frequency-Domain Multiplexing (fMUX) is one strategy for reading out many detectors with one SQUID. For any readout system, it is important to carefully evaluate the thermal design of detector, in conjunction with the readout bandwidth, in order to ensure stable electro-thermal feedback (ElF). We demonstrate a novel technique for characterizing the thermal circuit of our detectors, using am AC-bias and the fMUX electronics. This technique is used to study the internal thermal coupling of a TES bolometer. We illustrate how the insights gathered by this technique have been instrumental in improving the stability of our multiplexed detectors for the South Pole Telescope (SPT). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOLOMETERS , *SUPERCONDUCTORS , *DETECTORS , *COSMIC background radiation , *TRANSITION metals , *TRANSITION temperature - Abstract
We will discuss the design, fabrication, and testing of a 960-element TES array installed on the new 10 meter South Pole Telescope (SPT). This array is designed to survey for galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, which is the inverse-Compton scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background photons by plasma bound to clusters of galaxies. The SPT bolometer array consists of fully lithographed spider-web absorbers fabricated on adhesive-bonded silicon wafers with an embedded metal back plane. The absorbers are connected to aluminum-titanium bilayer TESs with a transition temperature of approximately 550 mK. Additional normal-metal features adjust the devices' thermal properties to suit our readout system and observational strategy. The focal plane is cooled using a commercial, closed cycle, pulsetube refrigerator and a three-stage helium sorption refrigerator with a 250 mK base temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
