Search

Urban farming has emerged as a promising solution to address food security in cities. It encompasses several farming models, such as community, indoor, rooftop, and vertical farms, equipped with various farming techniques like aeroponics, hydroponics, and aquaponics. However, sustainability and yield remain major challenges to fully realize its potential. To gain more insights, we have analysed scientific literature and interviewed urban farmers. Key challenges identified include limited land and water resources, incidences of pests and diseases, financial constraints for setup and maintenance, knowledge and skill gaps among participants, and lack of effective collaboration between universities, government, and industries. This review discusses global initiatives in urban farming, different types of farming models, their benefits and challenges, and explores opportunities to address these challenges. The insights gained from this study will serve as a resource for the establishment of urban farms and the development of strategies aimed at enhancing the sustainability of urban farming.

軍隊與軍校強調高效完成任務，易引發軍事領域人員的身心壓力，近年為緩解壓力，嘗試結合虛擬實境（VR）進行心理治療，然實證研究仍在起步階段。正向心理與教育心理領域認為虛擬實境創造沉浸體驗，有助於協助個體舒緩負向情緒與提升正向心理特性，尤其是在日常生活中難以營造的敬畏情緒（awe）體驗。本研究採實驗法與受試者間設計，探討沉浸性虛擬實境對軍校生正向情緒與行為的影響效果，將100名軍校大學生區分實驗組（採用3D虛擬實境）與對照組（採用2D投影），在觀賞敬畏情緒誘發影片後，填答心理評量並接受利社會行為測量。本研究結果認為：一、全體研究參與者（不論組別）經敬畏情緒激發後，皆能引發感恩情緒、靈性幸福感與利社會行為傾向等正向心理特性；二、虛擬實境體驗後所提升敬畏情緒，產生兩條影響路徑，第一條為「敬畏情緒、感恩情緒、靈性幸福感」，第二條為「敬畏情緒、靈性幸福感、利社會行為」，感恩情緒與靈性幸福感分別具有中介效果；三、僅有虛擬實境情境所激發的敬畏情緒與利社會行為傾向才能預測具體利社會行動；四、虛擬實境適合運用於低年級軍校生提升正向情緒與行為之用。本研究根據上述研究結果，提供軍校教育與心理輔導具體建議，以促進軍校生的心理健康。 Introduction Virtual reality (VR) is an established medium that effectively elicits positive emotions by inducing a variety of authentic emotional responses. This technology offers an interactive, immersive, and realistic experience that enables vivid presentation of emotion-inducing stimuli, which are typically difficult to replicate in real-life scenarios. Given the challenge of replicating awe-inducing scenarios in traditional laboratory settings, few studies have investigated the concept of awe emotions (Silvia et al., 2015). However, advancements in VR technology have enabled researchers to overcome these obstacles. The military field is an early adopter of VR technology. Traditional military training requires substantial human and material resources to be effective. In this context, VR technology can be employed to address limitations such as budget constraints and disparities between training environments and actual battlefields. It enables soldiers to train in a comparatively safe environment, thereby reducing the likelihood of personnel and equipment damage, increasing self-efficacy, and eliciting near-realistic cognitive and emotional responses. Immersive VR with three-dimensional imaging is a technology that enables users to experience sensory perceptions, emotions, and physiological responses (Chirico et al., 2016). It facilitates body ownership through virtual cues, influencing both cognitive and sensory experiences (Slater & Banakou, 2021). VR induces the Proteus effect, in which virtual roles and behaviors become integrated into an individual’s self-concept and affect their real-life behavior (Yee & Bailenson, 2007). Awe emotions promote the development of social cohesion by aligning individual goals with group values (Keltner & Haidt, 2003). Stellar et al. (2017) argued that emotions such as gratitude foster social commitment and prosocial behavior. Awe reduces an individual’s sense of self-importance and facilitates group integration and positive social interactions. These emotions not only improve spiritual well-being but also enhance prosocial behaviors. Generally, research has reported that VR involves technological challenges and variable efficacy in terms of eliciting awe emotions (Saredakis et al., 2020). The present study investigated the potential of VR in the military context, specifically its effect on the psychological attributes (e.g., awe, gratitude, and spiritual well-being) and prosocial behaviors of military cadets. The following research questions were posed: 1. Can exposure to natural environments in VR elicit awe, gratitude, spiritual well-being, and prosocial behaviors in military cadets? 2. Does VR enhance these emotional and behavioral tendencies in this group? 3. Can VR effectively promote specific prosocial behaviors among this group? Methods In this quasi-experimental study, university students were recruited through social media platforms from a military school in northern Taiwan. After completing an online pretest questionnaire on awe emotions, the participants were stratified by grade and gender. Subsequently, they were randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group to ensure the comparability of their pretest scores. Each participant received an NT$150 voucher as a token of appreciation for their participation. After the participants were briefed at scheduled times and locations, they engaged in their respective activities. The control group was asked to watch a two-dimensional awe-inspiring video on a large screen and complete a questionnaire that was used to obtain informed consent and for a psychological assessment and analysis of prosocial behavior. After completing similar briefing and consent procedures, the experimental group was asked to use VR devices to watch the same video and complete the same questionnaire. Prosocial behavior was assessed as part of the experiment, and all participants received their vouchers at the end of the study, regardless of the amount they originally donated. A total of 184 cadets were initially included in the study. After excluding cadets with incomplete responses, scheduling conflicts, and those who were unreachable, 100 military cadets were finally included in the study. These cadets were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 50 cadets in each. The experimental group comprised 14 freshmen and 12 cadets each in their sophomore, junior, and senior years, with an equal number of male and female participants. The control group comprised 16 freshmen, 12 sophomores, and 11 students each in their junior and senior years, with 26 male and 24 female participants. Results and Discussion Exposure to awe-inspiring stimuli enhance the positive emotions and increase the resources of military cadets. The benefits of these effects include increased feelings of gratitude, a heightened sense of spiritual well-being, and a boost in motivation and concrete behaviors that are beneficial to group and societal welfare. Military academy training often induces negative emotions in students. The current study suggests that integrating positive emotions such as awe into military education can improve the physical and mental well-being of military cadets. Military educators should encourage their students to actively adopt positive emotions and altruistic thinking. Such a shift toward fostering positive emotions, rather than solely mitigating negative ones, can improve the psychological health and adaptability of military cadets. Overall, awe can be elicited in military cadets through natural environments characterized by vastness. This effect is prominent in the context of VR. These awe emotions can further induce feelings of gratitude and spiritual well-being in the cadets, with gratitude serving as a mediating factor. With a sense of spiritual well-being, awe emotions typically lead to prosocial tendencies, indicating a mediating effect. However, gratitude did not play a significant mediating role in the effect of awe on prosocial behavior. This suggests that awe emotions induced through VR for promoting prosocial behavior are not only related to connecting with others but also to an enhanced sense of life meaning. Therefore, awe is an emotion capable of self-transcendence and is beneficial in promoting group welfare (Keltner & Haidt, 2003; Stellar et al., 2017). In this study, although the proposed awe model was also valid for the control group, the total effect size was more favorable in the experimental group. Only the prosocial behavioral tendencies induced in the VR environment led to an increase in the volume of donations and the decision to donate among military cadets. These findings indicate that the utilization of VR in military academy settings fosters concrete prosocial behaviors among students. Overall, this study confirms the prosocial behavior pathway of awe proposed by Perlin and Li (2020), who employed the “quiet ego theory of awe”. According to this theory, after an awe emotion is elicited in a military cadet, cognitive adaptation does not lead to a diminution of the self (disproving the small-self theory) but rather to robust development, thereby achieving balance between the self and the group. This process triggers interdependent self, which leads to the development of altruistic and prosocial behaviors. Therefore, the pathway to prosocial behavior in military cadets may not be solely stimulated by feelings of gratitude. As awe intensifies, self-oriented and other-oriented perspectives lose their mutual exclusivity. Specifically, awe increases the collective concern and awareness of “us” in military cadets, which closely aligns with the values of unity and collective well-being emphasized in military education. Rather than the small-self theory, the prosocial behavior stimulated by awe in military cadets aligns with quiet ego theory and the objectives of military academy education.

Abstract Background This study aims to investigate the morphologic features of the crystalline lens in Primary Angle Closure Disease (PACD) patients with zonular instability during cataract surgery using the swept-source CASIA 2 Anterior Segment-Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) system. Methods A total of 398 eyes (125 PACD eyes with zonular instability, 133 PACD eyes with zonular stability, and 140 cataract patient controls) of 398 patients who underwent cataract surgery combined or not glaucoma surgery between January 2021 and January 2023 were enrolled. The crystalline lens parameters were measured by CASIA2 AS-OCT. Then, logistic regression was performed to evaluate the risk factors associated with zonular instability. Results The results revealed that PACD eyes had a more anterior lens equator position, a steeper anterior curvature of lens, shorter Axial Length (AL), shallower Anterior Chamber Distance (ACD), higher Lens Vault (LV) and thicker Lens Thickness (LT), when compared to eyes in the cataract control group. Furthermore, PACD eyes in the zonular instability group had steeper front R, front Rs and Front Rf, flatter back Rf, thicker lens anterior part thickness, higher lens anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratios, shallower ACD, and greater LV, when compared to PACD eyes with zonular stability. The logistic regression analysis, which was adjusted for age and gender, revealed that zonular instability was positively correlated with anterior part thickness, lens anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratio, and LV, but was negatively correlated with lens anterior radius and ACD. Conclusion Steeper anterior curvature, increased lens anterior part thickness, higher anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratio, shallower ACD, and greater LV are the anatomic features of PACD eyes associated with zonular instability.

Abstract Artificial selection has been widely applied to genetically fix rare phenotypic features in ornamental domesticated animals. For many of these animals, the mutated loci and alleles underlying rare phenotypes are known. However, few studies have explored whether these rare genetic mutations might have been fixed due to competition among related mutated alleles or if the fixation occurred due to contingent stochastic events. Here, we performed genetic crossing with twin-tail ornamental goldfish and CRISPR/Cas9-mutated goldfish to investigate why only a single mutated allele—chdS with a E127X stop codon (also called chdA E127X )—gives rise to the twin-tail phenotype in the modern domesticated goldfish population. Two closely related chdS mutants were generated with CRISPR/Cas9 and compared with the E127X allele in F2 and F3 generations. Both of the CRISPR/Cas9-generated alleles were equivalent to the E127X allele in terms of penetrance/expressivity of the twin-tail phenotype and viability of carriers. These findings indicate that multiple truncating mutations could have produced viable twin-tail goldfish. Therefore, the absence of polymorphic alleles for the twin-tail phenotype in modern goldfish likely stems from stochastic elimination or a lack of competing alleles in the common ancestor. Our study is the first experimental comparison of a singular domestication-derived allele with CRISPR/Cas9-generated alleles to understand how genetic fixation of a unique genotype and phenotype may have occurred. Thus, our work may provide a conceptual framework for future investigations of rare evolutionary events in domesticated animals.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a chronic progressive disease with high mortality. There has been more and more research focusing on the role of AMPK in PH. AMPK consists of three subunits—α, β, and γ. The crosstalk among these subunits ultimately leads to a delicate balance to affect PH, which results in conflicting conclusions about the role of AMPK in PH. It is still unclear how these subunits interfere with each other and achieve balance to improve or deteriorate PH. Several signaling pathways are related to AMPK in the treatment of PH, including AMPK/eNOS/NO pathway, Nox4/mTORC2/AMPK pathway, AMPK/BMP/Smad pathway, and SIRT3-AMPK pathway. Among these pathways, the role and mechanism of AMPK/eNOS/NO and Nox4/mTORC2/AMPK pathways are clearer than others, while the SIRT3-AMPK pathway remains still unclear in the treatment of PH. There are drugs targeting AMPK to improve PH, such as metformin (MET), MET combination, and rhodiola extract. In addition, several novel factors target AMPK for improving PH, such as ADAMTS8, TUFM, and Salt-inducible kinases. However, more researches are needed to explore the specific AMPK signaling pathways involved in these novel factors in the future. In conclusion, AMPK plays an important role in PH.

Summary: Male infertility is a recognized side effect of chemoradiotherapy. Extant spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) may act as originators for any subsequent recovery. However, which type of SSCs, the mechanism by which they survive and resist toxicity, and how they act to restart spermatogenesis remain largely unknown. Here, we identify a small population of Set domain-containing protein 4 (Setd4)-expressing SSCs that occur in a relatively dormant state in the mouse seminiferous tubule. Extant beyond high-dose chemoradiotherapy, these cells then activate to recover spermatogenesis. Recovery fails when Setd4+ SSCs are deleted. Confirmed to be of fetal origin, these Setd4+ SSCs are shown to facilitate early testicular development and also contribute to steady-state spermatogenesis in adulthood. Upon activation, chromatin remodeling increases their genome-wide accessibility, enabling Notch1 and Aurora activation with corresponding silencing of p21 and p53. Here, Setd4+ SSCs are presented as the originators of both testicular development and spermatogenesis recovery in chemoradiotherapy-induced infertility.

The liver, a complex parenchymal organ, possesses a distinctive microcirculatory system crucial for its physiological functions. An intricate interplay exists between hepatic microcirculatory disturbance and the manifestation of pathological features in diverse liver diseases. This review updates the main characteristics of hepatic microcirculatory disturbance, including hepatic sinusoidal capillarization, narrowing of sinusoidal space, portal hypertension, and pathological angiogenesis, as well as their formation mechanisms. It also summarized the detection methods for hepatic microcirculation. Simultaneously, we have also reviewed the characteristics of microcirculatory disturbance in diverse liver diseases such as acute liver failure, hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatic fibrosis, hepatic cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Finally, this review also summarizes the advancement in hepatic microcirculation attributed to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its active metabolites, providing novel insights into the application of TCM in treating liver diseases.

Abstract Background Based on a longitudinal cohort design, the aim of this study was to investigate whether individual-based 18F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) regional signals can predict dementia conversion in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods We included 44 MCI converters (MCI-C), 38 non-converters (MCI-NC), 42 patients with Alzheimer’s disease with dementia, and 40 cognitively normal controls. Data from annual cognitive measurements, 3D T1 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and 18F-FDG-PET scans were used for outcome analysis. An individual-based FDG-PET approach was applied using seven volumes of interest (VOIs), Z transformed using a normal FDG-PET template. Hypometabolism was defined as a Z score < -2 of regional standard uptake value ratio. For the longitudinal cognitive test scores, generalized estimating equations were used. A linear mixed-effects model was used to compare the temporal impact of cortical hypometabolism and cortical thickness degeneration. Results The clinical follow-up period was 6.6 ± 3.8 years (range 3.1 to 16.0 years). The trend of cognitive decline could differentiate MCI-C from MCI-NC after 3 years of follow-up. In the baseline 18F-FDG-PET scan of the patients with MCI, medial temporal lobe (MTL; 94.7% sensitivity, 80.5% specificity) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC; 89.5% sensitivity, 73.1% specificity) hypometabolism predicted conversion with high accuracy. 18F-FDG-PET hypometabolism preceded dementia conversion at an interval of 3.70 ± 1.68 years and was earlier than volumetric changes, with the exception of the MTL. Conclusions Our finding supports the use of individual-based 18F-FDG-PET analysis to predict MCI conversion to dementia. Reduced FDG-PET metabolism in the MTL and PCC were strongly associated with future cognitive decline in the MCI-C group. Changes in 18F-FDG-PET occurred 1 to 8 years prior to conversion to dementia. Progressive hypometabolism in the PCC, precuneus and lateral temporal lobe, but not MTL, preceded MRI findings at the MCI stage.

Abstract Purpose This study was aimed to investigate the risk factors of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in twin preterm infants. Methods The clinical data of 67 pairs of twin preterm infants admitted to the neonatal department of our hospital from January 2010 to December 2021 were retrospectively collected. One of the twins had NEC (Bell II and above) and the other twin without NEC. They were divided into NEC group and control group according to whether NEC occurred or not. ABSTRACTThe mammalian Sterile 20-like kinase 1/2 (MST1/2) belongs to the serine/threonine (GC) protein kinase superfamily. Collective studies confirm the vital role MST1/2 in inflammation and immunity. MST1/2 is closely related to the progress of inflammation. Generally, MST1/2 aggravates the inflammatory injury through MST1-JNK, MST1-mROS, MST1-Foxo3, and NF-κB pathways, as well as several regulatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), mitochondrial extension factor 1 (MIEF1), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Moreover, MST1/2 is also involved in the regulation of immunity to balance immune activation and tolerance by regulating MST1/2-Rac, MST1-Akt1/c-myc, MST1-Foxos, MST1-STAT, Btk pathways, and lymphocyte function-related antigen 1 (LFA-1), which subsequently prevents immunodeficiency syndrome and autoimmune diseases. This article reviews the effects of MST1/2 on inflammation and immunity.

Abstract Background Microbiota-gut-brain axis interacts with one another to regulate brain functions. However, whether the impacts of gut dysbiosis on limbic white matter (WM) tracts contribute to the neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in patients with amyloid-positive amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI+), have not been explored yet. This study aimed to investigate the mediation effects of limbic WM integrity on the association between gut microbiota and NPS in patients with aMCI+. Methods Twenty patients with aMCI + and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. All subjects underwent neuropsychological assessments and their microbial compositions were characterized using 16S rRNA Miseq sequencing technique. Amyloid deposition inspected by positron emission tomography imaging and limbic WM tracts (i.e., fornix, cingulum, and uncinate fasciculus) detected by diffusion tensor imaging were additionally measured in patients with aMCI+. We employed a regression-based mediation analysis using Hayes’s PROCESS macro in this study. Results The relative abundance of genera Ruminococcus and Lactococcus was significantly decreased in patients with aMCI + versus HCs. The relative abundance of Ruminococcus was negatively correlated with affective symptom cluster in the aMCI + group. Notably, this association was mediated by WM integrity of the left cingulate gyrus. Conclusions Our findings suggest Ruminococcus as a potential target for the management of affective impairments in patients with aMCI+.

Abstract Background Both nonoperative and operative treatments for spinal metastasis are expensive interventions. Patients' expected 3‐month survival is believed to be a key factor to determine the most suitable treatment. However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous study lends support to the hypothesis. We sought to determine the cost‐effectiveness of operative and nonoperative interventions, stratified by patients' predicted probability of 3‐month survival. Methods A Markov model with four defined health states was used to estimate the quality‐adjusted life years (QALYs) and costs for operative intervention with postoperative radiotherapy and radiotherapy alone (palliative low‐dose external beam radiotherapy) of spine metastases. Transition probabilities for the model, including the risks of mortality and functional deterioration, were obtained from secondary and our institutional data. Willingness to pay thresholds were prespecified at $100,000 and $150,000. The analyses were censored after 5‐year simulation from a health system perspective and discounted outcomes at 3% per year. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the study design. Results The incremental cost‐effectiveness ratios were $140,907 per QALY for patients with a 3‐month survival probability >50%, $3,178,510 per QALY for patients with a 3‐month survival probability 50%. Conclusions This study emphasizes the need to choose patients carefully and estimate preoperative survival for those with spinal metastases. In addition to reaffirming previous research regarding the influence of ambulatory status on cost‐effectiveness, our study goes a step further by highlighting that operative intervention with postoperative radiotherapy could be more cost‐effective than radiotherapy alone for patients with a better survival outlook. Accurate survival prediction tools and larger future studies could offer more detailed insights for clinical decisions.

Little is known about co-occurring tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 in low TB incidence settings. We obtained a cross-section of 333 persons in the United States co-diagnosed with TB and COVID-19 within 180 days and compared them to 4,433 persons with TB only in 2020 and 18,898 persons with TB during 2017‒2019. Across both comparison groups, a higher proportion of persons with TB–COVID-19 were Hispanic, were long-term care facility residents, and had diabetes. When adjusted for age, underlying conditions, and TB severity, COVID-19 co-infection was not statistically associated with death compared with TB infection only in 2020 (adjusted prevalence ratio 1.0 [95% CI 0.8‒1.4]). Among TB–COVID-19 patients, death was associated with a shorter interval between TB and COVID-19 diagnoses, older age, and being immunocompromised (non-HIV). TB–COVID-19 deaths in the United States appear to be concentrated in subgroups sharing characteristics known to increase risk for death from either disease alone.

Recommended vaccination at nine months of age with the measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) has been part of Ethiopia’s routine immunization program since 1980. A second dose of MCV (MCV2) was introduced in 2019 for children 15 months of age. We examined MCV1 and MCV2 coverage and the factors associated with measles vaccination status. A cross-sectional household survey was conducted among caregivers of children aged 12–35 months in selected districts of Oromia Region. Measles vaccination status was determined using home-based records, when available, or caregivers’ recall. We analyzed the association between MCV1 and MCV2 vaccination status and household, caregiver, and child factors using logistic regression. The caregivers of 1172 children aged 12–35 months were interviewed and included in the analysis. MCV1 and MCV2 coverage was 71% and 48%, respectively. The dropout rate (DOR) from the first dose of Pentavalent vaccine to MCV1 was 22% and from MCV1 to MCV2 was 46%. Caregivers were more likely to vaccinate their children with MCV if they gave birth at a health facility, believe that their child had received all recommended vaccines, and know the required number of vaccination visits and doses. MCV2 coverage was low, with a high measles dropout rate (DOR). Caregivers with high awareness of MCV and its schedule were more likely to vaccinate their children. Intensified demand generation, defaulter tracking, and vaccine-stock management should be strengthened to improve MCV uptake.

The state preparation is a crucial procedure in atom interferometry; however, there is a shortage of detailed experimental studies on determining the optimal method for achieving this. This paper investigates and compares two methods for state preparation: the combined use of microwave and Raman light (M-R) and the combined use of optical pumping, microwave, and Raman light (O-M-W). The experimental results demonstrate that the M-R method improves the efficiency of Raman transitions for atom interference, which is helpful in enhancing the contrast of the interference fringes. The O-M-R method increases the quantity of prepared atoms, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio of the detected signals. This work helps provide a useful experimental basis and reference for researchers to design a suitable state preparation scheme.

Staphylococcus aureus infection and colonization in patients may be transmitted to healthcare providers and the environment and subsequently cause healthcare-associated infections in other patients. Pathogenic S. aureus strains produce virulence factors, such as Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL), that contribute to the severity of infections and aid in their spread. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is additional concern with respect to S. aureus infection. In this study, the virulence genes and antibiotic resistance profiles of S. aureus were characterized from patients' clinical isolates, healthcare workers' (HCWs') nasal colonization screenings, and the environment at a tertiary healthcare hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 365 samples were collected from September 2021 to September 2022: 73 patients' clinical specimens, 202 colonization screenings from HCWs, and 90 hospital environment's swabs. Fifty-one (25.2%) HCW and 10/90 (11.1%) environment S. aureus isolates were identified. Among the 134 isolates, 10 (7.5%) were methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Three (4.1%), five (9.8%), and two (20.0%) of the MRSA isolates were identified from the patients, HCWs, and the environment, respectively. BackgroundInsufficient exercise affects the health of patients who have implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between exercise self-efficacy (ESE) and its associated psychological factors in ICD recipients.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included individuals who had undergone ICD implantation at the cardiology department of a medical centre in Taiwan. A face-to-face survey was conducted. The survey questionnaire included questions regarding the participants' demographics, perceived health (PH), ICD shock-related anxiety (ICD-SRA), self-care self-efficacy (SSE), perceived exercise benefit (PE-benefit), perceived exercise barrier (PE-barrier), and ESE. Data were analysed using SPSS 20.0 Software. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were also performed to evaluate the predictive effects of the aforementioned factors on ESE.ResultsA total of 52 ICD recipients were enrolled. ESE was negatively correlated with ICD-SRA (r = -0.511; p < 0.01) and PE-barrier (r = -0.563; p < 0.01), but positively correlated with SSE (r = 0.339; p < 0.05) and PE-benefit (r = 0.464; p < 0.01). The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that PE-barrier, PE-benefit, and ICD-SRA effectively predicted ESE in the participants.ConclusionsESE may be improved by overcoming PE-barrier, ICD-SRA and enhancing PE-benefit. Consequently, improving ESE may enhance the health benefits of exercise.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most devastating public health emergencies of international concern to have occurred in the past century. To ensure a safe, scalable, and sustainable response, it is imperative to understand the burden of disease, epidemiological trends, and responses to activities that have already been implemented. We aimed to analyze how COVID-19 tests, cases, and deaths varied by time and region in the general population and healthcare workers (HCWs) in Ethiopia.MethodsCOVID-19 data were captured between October 01, 2021, and September 30, 2022, in 64 systematically selected health facilities throughout Ethiopia. The number of health facilities included in the study was proportionally allocated to the regional states of Ethiopia. Data were captured by standardized tools and formats. Analysis of COVID-19 testing performed, cases detected, and deaths registered by region and time was carried out.ResultsWe analyzed 215,024 individuals' data that were captured through COVID-19 surveillance in Ethiopia. Of the 215,024 total tests, 18,964 COVID-19 cases (8.8%, 95% CI: 8.7%- 9.0%) were identified and 534 (2.8%, 95% CI: 2.6%- 3.1%) were deceased. The positivity rate ranged from 1% in the Afar region to 15% in the Sidama region. Eight (1.2%, 95% CI: 0.4%- 2.0%) HCWs died out of 664 infected HCWs, of which 81.5% were from Addis Ababa. Three waves of outbreaks were detected during the analysis period, with the highest positivity rate of 35% during the Omicron period and the highest rate of ICU beds and mechanical ventilators (38%) occupied by COVID-19 patients during the Delta period.ConclusionsThe temporal and regional variations in COVID-19 cases and deaths in Ethiopia underscore the need for concerted efforts to address the disparities in the COVID-19 surveillance and response system. These lessons should be critically considered during the integration of the COVID-19 surveillance system into the routine surveillance system.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite shows great application prospects in the field of luminescent material due to relatively high chemical stability and regulation of efficient luminescence performance. Here, a series of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (R-XPMA)2PbCl4 (R = 2,3,4 substituted, PMA = benzylamine, X = Cl, Br) were prepared. Through the change from the molecular level two-dimensional perovskite “thickness”, as well as the preparation of heterojunction composites, tunning of the optical properties of the perovskite was achieved. The experimental results show that the shift of the fluorescence emission was related to the species and positions of halogen atoms to a certain degree, providing new insight into the optical properties regulation of layered perovskite materials.

Summary: Prenatal stress has been extensively documented as a contributing factor to adverse cardiac development and function in fetuses and infants. The release of glucocorticoids (GCs), identified as a significant stressor, may be a potential factor inducing cardiac hypertrophy. However, the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Herein, we discovered that corticosterone (CORT) overload induced cardiac hypertrophy in embryonic chicks and fetal mice in vivo, as well as enlarged cardiomyocytes in vitro. The impaired mitochondria dynamics were observed in CORT-exposed cardiomyocytes, accompanied by dysfunction in oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. This phenomenon was found to be linked to decreased mitochondrial fusion protein mitofusin 2 (MFN2). Subsequently, we found that CORT facilitated the ubiquitin-proteasome-system-dependent degradation of MFN2 with an enhanced binding of appoptosin to MFN2, serving as the underlying cause. Collectively, our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms by which exposure to stress hormones induces cardiac hypertrophy in fetuses.

Functional dystonia is one of the most common phenotypes of functional movement disorder (FMD). Multiple clinical manifestations of functional dystonia are complex and some symptoms overlap with idiopathic dystonia. The diagnosis of functional dystonia is challenging and the overall progenosis is poor. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, auxiliary examination, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of functional dystonia, in order to improve clinical cognition and promote the multi‑disciplinary team (MDT) of functional dystonia.

Abstract Background Drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis prevention and care is a major challenge in Ethiopia. The World health organization has designated Ethiopia as one of the 30 high burden multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) countries. There is limited information regarding genetic diversity and transmission dynamics of MDR-TB in Ethiopia. Objective To investigate the molecular epidemiology and transmission dynamics of MDR-TB strains using whole genome sequence (WGS) in the Amhara region. Methods Forty-five MDR-TB clinical isolates from Amhara region were collected between 2016 and 2018, and characterized using WGS and 24-loci Mycobacterium Interspersed Repetitive Units Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (MIRU-VNTR) typing. Clusters were defined based on the maximum distance of 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or alleles as the upper threshold of genomic relatedness. Five or less SNPs or alleles distance or identical 24-loci VNTR typing is denoted as surrogate marker for recent transmission. Results Forty-one of the 45 isolates were analyzed by WGS and 44% (18/41) of the isolates were distributed into 4 clusters. Of the 41 MDR-TB isolates, 58.5% were classified as lineage 4, 36.5% lineage 3 and 5% lineage 1. Overall, TUR genotype (54%) was the predominant in MDR-TB strains. 41% (17/41) of the isolates were clustered into four WGS groups and the remaining isolates were unique strains. The predominant cluster (Cluster 1) was composed of nine isolates belonging to lineage 4 and of these, four isolates were in the recent transmission links. Conclusions Majority of MDR-TB strain cluster and predominance of TUR lineage in the Amhara region give rise to concerns for possible ongoing transmission. Efforts to strengthen TB laboratory to advance diagnosis, intensified active case finding, and expanded contact tracing activities are needed in order to improve rapid diagnosis and initiate early treatment. This would lead to the interruption of the transmission chain and stop the spread of MDR-TB in the Amhara region.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether plasma biomarkers can help to diagnose, differentiate from Alzheimer disease (AD), and stage cognitive performance in patients with positron emission tomography (PET)-confirmed primary age-related tauopathy, termed tau-first cognitive proteinopathy (TCP) in this study. In this multi-center study, we enrolled 285 subjects with young-onset AD (YOAD; n = 55), late-onset AD (LOAD; n = 96), TCP (n = 44), and cognitively unimpaired controls (CTL; n = 90) and analyzed plasma Aβ42/Aβ40, pTau181, neurofilament light (NFL), and total-tau using single-molecule assays. Amyloid and tau centiloids reflected pathological burden, and hippocampal volume reflected structural integrity. Receiver operating characteristic curves and areas under the curves (AUCs) were used to determine the diagnostic accuracy of plasma biomarkers compared to hippocampal volume and amyloid and tau centiloids. The Mini-Mental State Examination score (MMSE) served as the major cognitive outcome. Logistic stepwise regression was used to assess the overall diagnostic accuracy, combining fluid and structural biomarkers and a stepwise linear regression model for the significant variables for MMSE. For TCP, tau centiloid reached the highest AUC for diagnosis (0.79), while pTau181 could differentiate TCP from YOAD (accuracy 0.775) and LOAD (accuracy 0.806). NFL reflected the clinical dementia rating in TCP, while pTau181 (rho = 0.3487, p = 0.03) and Aβ42/Aβ40 (rho = −0.36, p = 0.02) were significantly correlated with tau centiloid. Hippocampal volume (unstandardized β = 4.99, p = 0.01) outperformed all of the fluid biomarkers in predicting MMSE scores in the TCP group. Our results support the superiority of tau PET to diagnose TCP, pTau181 to differentiate TCP from YOAD or LOAD, and NFL for functional staging.

Hydrolyzed royal jelly peptide (RJP) has garnered attention for its health-promoting functions. However, the potential applications of RJP in skincare have not been fully explored. In this study, we prepared RJP through the enzymatic hydrolysis of royal jelly protein with trypsin and investigated its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties on primary human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). Our results demonstrate that RJP effectively inhibits oxidative damage induced by H2O2 and lipid peroxidation triggered by AAPH and t-BuOOH in HDFs. This effect may be attributed to the ability of RJP to enhance the level of glutathione and the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase 4, as well as its excellent iron chelating capacity. Furthermore, RJP modulates the NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammatory response in HDFs, suppressing the mRNA expressions of NLRP3 and IL-1β in the primer stage induced by LPS and the release of mature IL-1β induced by ATP, monosodium urate, or nigericin in the activation stage. RJP also represses the expressions of COX2 and iNOS induced by LPS. Finally, we reveal that RJP exhibits superior antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties over unhydrolyzed royal jelly protein. These findings suggest that RJP exerts protective effects on skin cells through antioxidative and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, indicating its promise for potential therapeutic avenues for managing oxidative stress and inflammation-related skin disorders.

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus is among the top three causative agents of nosocomial infection in Ethiopia. The majority of studies in Ethiopia have focused on the epidemiology of S. aureus in hospital settings, with limited molecular genotyping results. Molecular characterization of S. aureus is essential for identification of strains, and contributes to the control and prevention of S. aureus infection. The aim of the current study was to determine the molecular epidemiology of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates recovered from clinical specimens in Ethiopia. A total of 161 MSSA and 9 MRSA isolates were characterized using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and staphylococcal protein A (spa) typing. Based on the PFGE analysis, MSSA isolates were grouped into eight pulso-types groups (from A to I), while MRSA isolates clustered into three (A, B and C) pulso-types with more than 80% similarity. The spa typing analysis showed diversity of S. aureus with 56 distinct spa types. Spa type t355 was most prevalent (56/170, 32.9%), while eleven new spa types were detected including t20038, t20039, and t20042. The identified spa types were clustered into 15 spa-clonal complexes (spa-CCs) using BURP analysis; novel/unknown spa types were further subjected to MLST analysis. The majority of isolates belonged to spa-CC 152 (62/170, 36.4%), followed by spa-CC 121 (19/170, 11.2%), and spa-CC 005 (18 /170, 10.6%). Of the nine MRSA isolates, 2 (22.2%) were spa-CC 239 with staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC)mec III. These findings highlight the diversity of S. aureus strains in Ethiopia, as well as the presence of potentially epidemic strains circulating in the country necessitating further characterization of S. aureus for antimicrobial resistance detection and infection prevention purposes.

Abstract Background Air pollution is a key public health factor with the capacity to induce diseases. The risk of ischemia heart disease (IHD) in those suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from air pollution exposure is ambiguous. This study aimed to: (1) determine the hazard ratio (HR) of IHD after the first-diagnosed SLE and (2) examine the effects of air pollution exposure on IHD in SLE for 12 years. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study. Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring data were used in the study. Cases first diagnosed with SLE in 2006 cases without IHD were recruited as the SLE group. We randomly selected an additional sex-matched non-SLE cohort, four times the size of the SLE cohort, as the control group. Air pollution indices by residence city per period were calculated as the exposure. Life tables and Cox proportional risk models of time-dependent covariance were used in the research. Results This study identified patients for the SLE group (n = 4,842) and the control group (n = 19,368) in 2006. By the end of 2018, the risk of IHD was significantly higher in the SLE group than in the control group, and risks peaked between the 6th and 9th year. The HR of incidence IHD in the SLE group was 2.42 times that of the control group. Significant correlations with risk of developing IHD were noted for sex, age, CO, NO2, PM10, and PM2.5, of which PM10 exposure had the highest risk of IHD incidence. Conclusions Subjects with SLE were at a higher risk of IHD, especially those in the 6th to 9th year after SLE diagnosis. The advanced cardiac health examinations and health education plan should be recommended for SLE patients before the 6th year after SLE diagnosed.

Planting under plastic-film mulches is widely used in spring maize production in arid-cold regions for water conservation and warming the soil. To ameliorate the associated issues such as plastic-film residues and additional labor during the “seedling release” in spring maize production, we have developed a plastic-film-side seeding (PSS) technology with the supporting machinery. In the semi-arid regions of Northwest China, a 7-year trial demonstrated that PSS increased plant number per hectare by 6 547 and maize yield by 1 686 kg ha–1 compared with the traditional method of seeding under plastic-film mulch (PM). Two-year experiments were conducted in two semi-arid regions to further understand the effects of PSS on three important aspects of production: (i) the moisture and temperature of soil, (ii) maize development, yield output, and water use efficiency (WUE), and (iii) the revenue and plastic-film residuals in comparison with that of flat planting (CK) and PM. Continuous monitoring of the soil status demonstrated that, compared with CK, the PSS treatment significantly increased the temperature and moisture of the 0–20 cm soil in the seeding row at the early stage of maize development, and it also promoted grain yield (at 884–1 089 kg ha–1) and WUE, achieving a similar effect as the PM treatment. Economically, the labor inputs of PSS were equal to CK, whereas the PM cost an additional 960 CNY ha–1 in labor for releasing the seedlings from below the film. Overall, the PSS system increased profits by 5.83% (547 CNY ha–1 yr–1) and 8.16% (748 CNY ha–1 yr–1) compared with CK and PM, respectively. Environmentally, PSS achieved a residual film recovery rate of nearly 100% and eliminated 96 to 130 kg ha–1 of residual plastic-film in PM in 3–5 years of maize production. Collectively, these results show that PSS is an eco-friendly technique for improving yield stability and incomes for the sustainable production of maize in semi-arid regions.

A fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-steel composite bars (FSCBs), with an inner steel core and outer FRP jacket, is a novel type of reinforcement designed to inherit good durability and ductility suitable for seawater sea sand concrete structures. The long-term tensile behavior of FSCBs in chloride environments is important. The long-term tensile behavior of glass-type FSCBs with different fiber layer thicknesses under chloride environment attack was investigated in this study. FSCBs with an inner steel bar of fixed diameter (8 mm) and an outer FRP jacket of three thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 mm) were used for research. Seawater-immersion accelerated-aging experiments at three different aging temperatures (23, 40, and 60 °C) and aging times (1, 6 and 12 months) were conducted. The failure modes, equivalent elastic modulus, pseudo strain hardening moduSTlus, and tensile strength retention of the FSCBs under the above mentioned aging temperatures and times were analyzed. The experimental results determined that the chloride environment had no significant effect on the equivalent elastic modulus of the FSCBs. However, the pseudo-strain hardening modulus of the FSCBs decreased with increasing aging time. Moreover, the tensile strength retention of the FSCBs decreased with increasing temperature under the same aging time and FSCBs diameter. A prediction model for the tensile strength retention of FSCBs with different FRP layer thicknesses at different aging temperatures and times was proposed and validated. The results provided a better understanding of the durability of FSCBs in marine hydrothermal environments to establish the criteria and standards of design.

Abstract Background This study aimed to examine the prevalence and clinical findings of the vacuum phenomenon (VP) in closed pelvic fractures. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 352 patients with closed pelvic fractures who presented to our institution from January 2017 to December 2020. Pelvic fractures were diagnosed by plain radiography and computed tomography (CT). The default “bone window” was used for inspection in the cross section. Electronic medical records were consulted by two orthopedic physicians to obtain patient information. The VP of pelvic fracture, fracture classification, injury mechanism, and image data were evaluated, and the demographic parameter data were statistically analyzed. The follow-up time was 12–18 months. Results Among them, 169 were males and 183 were females with ages ranging from 3 to 100 years, with an average of 49.6 ± 19.3 years. VP in pelvic fractures was detected by CT in 109 (31%) of the 352 patients with pelvic fractures. Patients were divided into the high-energy trauma group (278 cases) and fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) group (74 cases) according to the injury mechanism. In the high-energy trauma group, 227 cases were treated surgically and 201 cases had bony healing. The healing time was 9.8 ± 5.3 weeks. In the FFP group, 54 cases were treated surgically and 49 cases had bone healing. The healing time was 9.3 ± 3.8 weeks. Fractures progressed in nine patients. VP was mostly located in the sacroiliac joint in our study. Conclusions The incidence of VP in pelvic fractures is statistically high and is affected by many factors, such as examination technique, joint position, population composition, etc. Therefore, the VP is not a reliable sign of pelvic injury. Clinically, we need to determine the nature of VP in conjunction with gas patterns, laboratory tests, history, and physical examination.

Summary: Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RAY1216, a novel inhibitor of 3-chymotrypsin-like cysteine protease (3CLpro), in adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This phase 2, single centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included hospitalised patients between August 14, 2022, and September 26, 2022, in Sanya Central Hospital (The Third People’s Hospital of Hainan Province) in China with no severe symptoms if they had laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection for not more than 120 h (5 days) and a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) cycle threshold (Ct) value of ≤30 for both the open reading frames 1 ab (ORF1ab) and nucleocapsid (N) genes within 72 h before randomisation. Half of the participants (n = 30) were randomly assigned (2:1) to receive either RAY1216 or a matched placebo three times a day (TID) for 5 days (15 doses in total), while the other half received RAY1216 plus ritonavir (RAY1216 plus RTV) or a matched placebo every 12 h for 5 days (10 doses in total). The primary endpoint was the time of viral clearance. Secondary outcomes included the changes of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA viral load, the positivity rate of the nucleic acid test, and the recovery time of clinical symptoms. A safety evaluation was performed to record and analyse all adverse events that occurred during and after drug administration as well as any cases in which dosing was halted because of these events. Findings: The viral shedding times in the RAY1216 and RAY1216 plus RTV groups were 166 h (95% confidence interval (CI): 140–252) and 155 h (95%CI: 131–203), respectively, which were 100 h (4.2 days) and 112 h (4.6 days) shorter than that of the placebo group, respectively (RAY1216 group vs. Placebo p = 0.0060, RAY1216 plus RTV group vs. Placebo p = 0.0001). At 24 h, 72 h, and 120 h after administration, the viral RNA loads in the RAY1216 and RAY1216 plus RTV groups were significantly less than those of the placebo groups. At 280 h (11.5 days) after administration, the nucleic acid test results in the RAY1216 and RAY1216 plus RTV groups were both negative. The common adverse events related to the investigational drugs were mild and self-limiting laboratory examination abnormalities. Interpretation: Our findings suggest that RAY1216 monotherapy and RAY1216 plus ritonavir both demonstrated significant antiviral activity and reduced the duration of COVID-19 while maintaining a satisfactory safety profile. Considering the limited clinical application of RTV, it is recommended to use RAY1216 alone to further verify its efficacy and safety. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are adsorbents suitable for water treatment. However, they are often water soluble and poorly processible, limiting their industrial applications. This study aims to develop a carbonized MOFs with high adsorption performance based on MOFs. Here, we report the production of Mn-MOF [Mn(DMF)2(H2DHTPA)]n (where DMF is N,N-dimethylformamide and H4DHTPA is 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid) via a solvothermal method. This MOF shows good adsorption performance for various ions but dissolves easily in water. However, Mn-MOF-500 which was obtained by carbonising Mn-MOF at 500 °C shows high water stability. Thus, the adsorption properties of Mn-MOF-500 were investigated, revealing adsorption capacities for PO43-, Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), As(III), and As(V) of 126.66, 88.46, 356.21, 146.92, 51.28, and 166.10 mg/g, respectively. Based on the adsorption isotherms and the adsorption kinetics, the adsorption of PO43-, Cd(II), and As(III) occurs via monolayer chemisorption, whereas that of Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(V) occurs via monolayer chemisorption and physisorption in pores. X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that P, Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), As(III), and As(V) were adsorbed on Mn-MOF-500 as PO43-, Cd(OH)2, PbO and Pb(OH)2, Cu(OH)2, Mn3(AsO3)2, and MnHAsO4, respectively.

Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) causes various illnesses ranging in severity from mild to life-threatening but were ignored previously. Knowledge of the NOVC infection, particularly bacteremia, is limited because of its rarity. Here we first retrospectively reported the demographic, clinical, and therapy characteristics of patients with NOVC infection. Isolated NOVC stains were identified by a series of biochemical, mass spectrometry (MS), and serum agglutination tests. The results of 11 patients with NOVC infection (including 8 with bacteremia) with a median age of 68 years were included in this report. Most isolated NOVC strains had antibiotic susceptibility. Patients with NOVC-positive were distributed in various departments, most occurring in gastroenterology (6 cases). Hepatic disease was the most common comorbid disease, followed by diabetes (3 cases) and biliary tract disease (3 cases). Two cases were previously healthy. The most common symptom at presentation was fever. All patients presented with abnormal changes in hematology and inflammatory parameters. Cephalosporins were the most frequently used antibiotics. Ten patients had a favorable outcome after treatment; one died from complicated underlying diseases. In summary, we recommend the timely identification of NOVC strains using MALDI-TOF-MS. The suspicion of NOVC bacteremia cannot be ruled out regardless of the host’s immune status. An alternative therapeutic regimen for this infection may be β-lactam antibiotics or combined with β-lactamase inhibitors. Regardless, the specific therapeutic regimen should be based on the antibiogram data.

Summary: Most marine organisms have a biphasic life cycle during which pelagic larvae transform into radically different juveniles. In vertebrates, the role of thyroid hormones (THs) in triggering this transition is well known, but how the morphological and physiological changes are integrated in a coherent way with the ecological transition remains poorly explored. To gain insight into this question, we performed an integrated analysis of metamorphosis of a marine teleost, the false clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). We show how THs coordinate a change in color vision as well as a major metabolic shift in energy production, highlighting how it orchestrates this transformation. By manipulating the activity of liver X regulator (LXR), a major regulator of metabolism, we also identify a tight link between metabolic changes and metamorphosis progression. Strikingly, we observed that these regulations are at play in the wild, explaining how hormones coordinate energy needs with available resources during the life cycle.

Abstract The determination of lumbopelvic alignment is essential for planning adult spinal deformity surgery and for ensuring favorable surgical outcomes. This prospective study investigated the correlation between the lumbar section of lumbar spine lordosis and increasing pelvic incidence in 324 Asian adults with a mean age of 55 ± 13 years (range: 20–80 years), comprising 115 male and 209 female volunteers. In this study, the facile synthesis method of Bi2−xZrxO2Se (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06) ceramics using a combining the high-energy ball milling and cold pressing was reported. The effects of zirconium (Zr) doping on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the powder samples were synthesized as a single phase with no impurities. With increasing Zr content, conductivity increased from 13.49 S to 34.91 S cm−1 at 773 K. The thermal conductivity of Bi1.98Zr0.02O2Se was also reduced to 0.51 W m−1 K−1. The maximum power factor (PF) value of the Bi1.96Zr0.04O2Se sample was 186 μW m−1 K−2 at 773 K. A peak ZT of around 0.27 was achieved for the Bi1.96Zr0.04O2Se sample, which is approximately 2.4 times greater than that of un-doped one (∼0.11). The results indicate that Zr-doping significantly improves the thermoelectric properties of the Bi2O2Se system.

Posterior cataract opacification(PCO)is the epithelial-mesenchymal transformation(EMT)of residual lens epithelial cells(LECs)after cataract surgery, resulting in opaque scar which is one of the main complications of cataract surgery. A large amount of fibronectin(FN)produced by LECs after cataract surgery binds to a variety of cell surface receptors, matrix components and growth factors to regulate cell behavior. The purpose of this article is to review the literatures on the treatment of PCO targeting fibronectin and provide references for clinical treatment of PCO. In this paper, the research status of fibronectin in PCO in recent years is reviewed.

We analysed the forensic characteristics and substructure of the Handan Han population based on 36 Y-STR (short tandem repeat) and Y-SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) markers. The two most dominant haplogroups in Handan Han, O2a2b1a1a1-F8 (17.95%) and O2a2b1a2a1a (21.51%), and their abundant downstream branches, reflected the strong expansion of the precursor of the Hans in Handan. The present results enrich the forensic database and explore the genetic relationships between Handan Han and other neighbouring and/or linguistically close populations, which suggests that the current concise overview of the Han intricate substructure remains oversimplified.

Abstract Background To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pegylated recombinant human granulocyte colony‐stimulating factor (PEG‐rhG‐CSF) in preventing neutropenia during multiple cycles of chemotherapy in patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Method In a multicenter, prospective, randomized trial, patients with NSCLC were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to treatment group (PEG‐rhG‐CSF as primary prophylactic therapy) or control group. Patients in the control group were administered rhG‐CSF when white blood cell count was 0.05). Adverse events were reported in 47.13% of patients in the treatment group and 48.84% patients in the control group. Conclusions Primary prophylactic treatment with PEG‐rhG‐CSF could reduce the incidence of neutropenia in patients with NSCLC during multiple cycles of chemotherapy, with acceptable safety and tolerability.

The Gobi Desert in East Asia experiences dust outbreaks during the spring, which are often caused by high winds associated with Mongolian cyclones. The radiative forcing that arises from dust aerosols could affect the intensity and movement of Mongolian cyclones and cold fronts. A case study on a Mongolian cyclone that occurred during 18–22 March 2010 in East Asia examines these factors using an atmosphere-dust coupled model. Our numerical results show that dust’s impact on the intensity of the cyclone and its cold front varies between day and night and depends on the relative position of the weather systems of interest to the dust plume, i.e., the edge or the main dust plume region. When the dust plume approaches the cold front, most of the dust is trapped behind the cold front at low levels, but a small amount of dust extends to the middle levels, thereby reaching the warm side of the middle-level front. As a result, dust weakens the intensity of the low-level front and intensifies the middle-level front during the daytime, modifying the cold front oppositely at night. On the other hand, dust influences the cyclone in two phases. During the first phase, the dust plume edge arrives at the center of the cyclone in the daytime and warms the region, slightly intensifying the cyclone. During the second phase, the major dust plume feeds into the cyclone center in the early morning. The net dust effect is negative, which cools the cyclone center and decreases or stops the intensification. Subsequently, the cyclone is taken over by a nearby cyclonic circulation downstream. The dust plume approaches the new cyclone center, which repeats a similar pattern of intensity change: intensifying and then leveling off. Our results show that dust has no apparent influence on the movement of the cyclone and its cold front for this case study.

Background Neuroblastoma (NB) places a substantial health burden on families worldwide. This study aimed to develop an immune checkpoint-based signature (ICS) based on the expression of immune checkpoints to better assess patient survival risk and potentially guide patient selection for immunotherapy of NB.Methods Immunohistochemistry integrated with digital pathology was used to determine the expression levels of 9 immune checkpoints in 212 tumor tissues used as the discovery set. The GSE85047 dataset (n=272) was used as a validation set in this study. In the discovery set, the ICS was constructed using a random forest algorithm and confirmed in the validation set to predict overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS). Kaplan-Meier curves with a log-rank test were drawn to compare the survival differences. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to calculate the area under the curve (AUC).Results Seven immune checkpoints, including PD-L1, B7-H3, IDO1, VISTA, T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain containing-3 (TIM-3), inducible costimulatory molecule (ICOS) and costimulatory molecule 40 (OX40), were identified as abnormally expressed in NB in the discovery set. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are chronic and progressive inflammatory joint diseases that affect a large population worldwide. Intra-articular administration of various therapeutics is applied to alleviate pain, prevent further progression, and promote cartilage regeneration and bone remodeling in both OA and RA. However, the effectiveness of intra-articular injection with traditional drugs is uncertain and controversial due to issues such as rapid drug clearance and the barrier afforded by the dense structure of cartilage. Nanoparticles can improve the efficacy of intra-articular injection by facilitating controlled drug release, prolonged retention time, and enhanced penetration into joint tissue. This review systematically summarizes nanoparticle-based therapies for OA and RA management. Firstly, we explore the interaction between nanoparticles and joints, including articular fluids and cells. This is followed by a comprehensive analysis of current nanoparticles designed for OA/RA, divided into two categories based on therapeutic mechanisms: direct therapeutic nanoparticles and nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems. We highlight nanoparticle design for tissue/cell targeting and controlled drug release before discussing challenges of nanoparticle-based therapies for efficient OA and RA treatment and their future clinical translation. We anticipate that rationally designed local injection of nanoparticles will be more effective, convenient, and safer than the current therapeutic approach.

The oxygen saturation index (OSI), defined by FIO2/SpO2 multiplied by the mean airway pressure, has been reported to exceed the Berlin definition in predicting the mortality of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The OSI has served as an alternative to the Berlin definition in categorizing pediatric ARDS. However, the use of the OSI for the stratification of adult ARDS has not been reported. A total of 379 invasively ventilated adult ARDS patients were retrospectively studied. The ARDS patients were classified into three groups by their incidence rate of mortality: mild (OSI < 14.69), moderate (14.69 < OSI < 23.08) and severe (OSI > 23.08). OSI-based categorization was highly correlated with the Berlin definition by a Kendall’s tau of 0.578 (p < 0.001). The Kaplan–Meier curves of the three OSI-based groups were significantly different (p < 0.001). By the Berlin definition, the hazard ratio for 28-day mortality was 0.58 (0.33–1.05) and 0.95 (0.55–1.67) for the moderate and severe groups, respectively (compared to the mild group). In contrast, the corresponding hazard ratio was 1.01 (0.69–1.47) and 2.39 (1.71–3.35) for the moderate and severe groups defined by the OSI. By multivariate analysis, OSI-based severe ARDS was independently associated with 28-D or 90-D mortality. In conclusion, we report the first OSI-based stratification for adult ARDS and find that it serves well as an alternative to the Berlin definition.

Six new thiodiketopiperazine-class alkaloids lecanicilliums A–F were isolated from the mangrove sediment-derived fungus Lecanicillium kalimantanense SCSIO41702, together with thirteen known analogues. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations were determined by quantum chemical calculations. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra and the structure of Lecanicillium C were further confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Lecanicillium A contained an unprecedented 6/5/6/5/7/6 cyclic system with a spirocyclic center at C-2′. Biologically, lecanicillium E, emethacin B, and versicolor A displayed significant cytotoxicity against human lung adenocarcinoma cell line H1975, with IC50 values of 7.2~16.9 μM, and lecanicillium E also showed antibacterial activity against four pathogens with MIC values of 10~40 μg/mL. Their structure–activity relationship is also discussed.
