AbstractThis paper explores the use of crime narratives through book clubs in criminal justice education. While true crime media has gained popularity, it often presents a skewed view of criminal justice realities. In contrast, carefully selected narratives in educational settings can promote significant learning experiences, as outlined in Fink’s taxonomy. These narratives can help humanize justice-involved individuals, challenge stereotypes, and provide a more balanced understanding of the criminal justice system. The growing field of narrative criminology further supports the use of stories to examine social hierarchies and inequalities within the justice system. Abstract Background Currently, multiple tools exist to teach and learn anatomy, but finding an adequate activity is challenging. However, it can be achieved through haptic experiences, where motivation is the means of a significant learning process. This study aimed to evaluate a haptic experience to determine if a tactile and painting with color marker interactive experience, established a better learning process in comparison to the traditional 2D workshop on printed paper with photographs. Methods Plaster bone models of the scapulae, humerus and clavicle were elaborated from a computerized scan tomography. Second year undergraduate medical students were invited to participate, where subjects were randomly assigned to the traditional 2D method or the 3D plaster bone model. A third group decided not to join any workshop. Following, all three groups were evaluated on bone landmarks and view, laterality, muscle insertions and functions. 2D and 3D workshop students were asked their opinion in a focus group and answered a survey regarding the overall perception and learning experience. Evaluation grades are presented as mean ± standard deviation, and answers from the survey are presented as percentages. Results The survey demonstrated the students in the 3D model graded the experience as outstanding, and in five out of the six questions, answers were very good or excellent. In contrast, for students participating in the 2D workshop the most common answers were fair or good. The exception was the answer regarding the quiz, where both groups considered it good, despite the average among all groups not being a passing grade. Conclusions To learn the anatomy of the shoulder, the conventional methodology was compared with a haptic experience, where plaster bone models were used, enabling students to touch and paint on them. Based on the focus group and survey this study revealed the 3D workshop was an interactive experience where, the sense of touch and painting greatly contributed to their learning process. Even though this activity was useful in terms of learning bone landmarks, view muscle insertions, and establish relations, further activities must be developed to increase their understanding regarding their function, and its relevance in a clinical setting.

Fink's Learning Taxonomy expanded upon Bloom's Learning Taxonomy to provide concrete suggestions on development of significant learning experiences. Limited research exists on implementation of Fink's learning Taxonomy in counselor education curriculum. As such, this conceptual article illuminates how the integration of Fink's Learning Taxonomy could be used by educators to develop significant learning experiences within counseling internship and practicum courses. We are in a particular moment in human history when climate change and environmental degradation, and the accompanying "eco-anxiety" many of us feel, are challenging predominant ways of living and educating. Just as educational developers have started turning a critical lens inward around other important social justice issues, we all have the opportunity, and indeed a responsibility, to examine the ways that our field may be contributing—albeit inadvertently—to much broader environmental injustices. In this article, we take as our starting point an influential taxonomy of learning, offered by L. Dee Fink, which is frequently utilized in U.S. centers for teaching and learning to guide faculty in the design of their courses. Our purpose is to explore the implications and potential growth areas of one particular area of Fink's learning taxonomy, what he has called the "Human Dimension," and then to propose an expanded understanding and application of this dimension to include attention to and relationships with the more-than-human world, which Indigenous peoples have long practiced. We hope, ultimately, for this piece to provoke critical reflection of an anthropocentric approach to education, inspire a broader ecological perspective-taking, and perhaps even result in concrete environmental actions. The authors of this article make a case for using Fink's (2013) taxonomy of significant learning in the economics classroom to improve standard-based economics education and to continue transforming the discipline to reduce social inequality along multiple dimensions, including gender, race, and class. Fink's framework is defined by student engagement with six distinct kinds of learning. Changes in student attitudes, changes in what students know about themselves and others, and learning how to learn in different settings are learning outcomes that are incorporated explicitly alongside acquiring new discipline-specific knowledge and skills. Few bioethics curricula at the graduate medical education level are evidence-based or comprehensive. We sought to develop and assess the effectiveness of a Team Based Learning (TBL) curriculum in improving residents’ bioethics knowledge and their ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas. Methods We integrated L. Dee Fink’s curricular design principles of “Significant Learning,” Jonsen et. al’s “Four-Box Method” of ethical analysis, and ABP bioethics content specifications to create 10 TBL bioethics sessions. Paediatric residents at a major academic centre then completed a 3-year longitudinal, integrated TBL-based bioethics curriculum. Primary outcomes included individual and group readiness assessment tests (iRAT/gRAT), pre-work completion, and satisfaction with sessions. Results The TBL-based bioethics curriculum contains 10 adaptable modules. A pilot experience of teaching innovation was developed in the masotherapy practice classes of the University of Seville's degree of physiotherapy using an active learning approach. Significant experiential learning–specific teaching strategies were implemented to address learning style diversity and promote dynamic participation, active listening, and the creation of clinical simulation learning environments. The strategies implemented included establishing an affective climate in the classroom that would encourage interaction among participants, facilitating the flow of information and the teaching–learning process, considering students' previous ideas, elaborating upon content maps and key questions to guide the teaching–learning process, establishing discussions favoring student brainstorming, using illustrations and videos ("visual thinking"), implementing experimental demonstrations and simulated clinical scenarios, and collaborative activities mediated by information and communication technology. The evaluation, which was developed using a questionnaire (pretest–posttest) that allowed the development of learning ladders and considered the complexity of the generated knowledge, revealed significant advances in student learning. The implementation of significant experiential learning–specific teaching strategies is useful for achieving the learning objectives of this subject. This research reflects the considerations of music teachers when assessing their students, the tools used and their consistency with guidelines issued by the Chilean Ministry of Education, along with theoretical approaches to assessment. In this way, we have analysed the theoretical contribution of renowned scholars such as Pujol, Santos Guerra, Chacón, and Fautley, as well as the music curricula of the Ministry of Education from first to eighth grade. We propose that it is essential to understand the experience of teachers in the assessment process from a constructivist perspective, analysing their agreement or disagreement with the current ministerial theoretical foundations in relation to assessment. Higher gRAT scores correlated with higher level of training. Although pre-work completion was low (28%), satisfaction was high (4.42/5 on Likert scale). Our TBL-based bioethics curriculum was effective in improving knowledge, practical and flexible in its implementation, and well-received. We attribute its success to its grounding in ethical theory, relevance to ABP specifications, and a multi-modal, engaging format. This curriculum is easily modified to different specialties, virtual formats, or other specific institutional needs. Despite formidable challenges to teaching bioethics in residency education, evidence-based methods such as Team-Based Learning (TBL) can be employed to increase knowledge and satisfaction. This study reports the first successful TBL bioethics curriculum, planned and executed longitudinally over 3 years, with paediatric residents at a large academic children's hospital in the US. Despite the increase in teaching approaches designed to integrate sustainability into higher education, the connection between students' learning experiences and their learning outcomes remains incompletely understood. The present multi-case study complements the discussion by investigating undergraduates' long-term meaning-making processes using the theoretical lens of significant learning and process analysis of students' learning experience. Based on in-depth narrative interviews with 10 students at the end of a three-year study program, we analyzed how and why learning experiences become significant, differentiating perceived personal impact and the subjective value assigned to these experiences. We identified three types of sustainability-related meaning-making processes, ranging from no sustainability-related meaning-making to meaning-making as self-realization. The differentiated view on how meaning-making mediates students' sustainability-related learning experiences and their learning outcomes enhances our understanding of the specific dynamics that may shape the how and why of significant learning. In this practitioner-based paper, the author provides insight into the course redesign process of an introductory doctoral level leadership course for a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership program. Students needed more support in bridging the scholar and practitioner identities; therefore, to support doctoral student skill development and academic experiences, faculty sought to address several weaknesses with a redesign process using Fink's Taxonomy of Significant Learning. Demotivation in learning English among vocational school students (grades 10 and 11) at Nuestra Señora de Fátima High School (Onzaga, Santander, Colombia) led us to undertake this research study. Its goal was to assess the incidence of the didactic act on this problem as well as to develop a plan of teaching strategies aimed at fostering motivation to learn English, using new ICT tools. The plan intended to improve the education quality and motivation at the vocational high school level. A mixed methodology was used in this research study, which was based on a socio-educational model. The techniques used included observation, document analysis and interviews (both semi-structured and structured). The instruments administered were a questionnaire, a survey and a Likert scale. The selection of the samples involved the use of simple probability random sampling. The results confirmed the proposed hypothesis that the didactic act has a high incidence on demotivation in learning English as acknowledged by teachers and students. The conclusion highlights the existence of a cold didactic relation, poor communication and misinterpretation of the remaining characteristics of the didactic act.

Teaching, in a pandemic, has been modified and distance processes have taken an important place. This work describes what strategies were generated to achieve learning with appropriate results, under these conditions. Various experiences and a group of proposals are reported for students of the mechanical engineering career, of two elective subjects (Surface Engineering, Selected Topics of Materials), online teaching. The resources used, the forms of evaluation used are described and evidence of the learning achieved is presented. With this, a growing participation of the students and an adequate level of learning were achieved. The purpose of this work is to contribute to the teaching work of teachers in the teaching of Materials, online education, sharing the alternatives described and used in these two subjects, which, to some extent, can be transferred to others and make a reflection about its strengths and limitations. Abstract The prevailing assumption is that a multi-age learning environment allows the learner tointeract with a wide range of students, representing a broad range of cognitive, emotional and social aspects depending on the individual development of each student. Focusing on the school vision of a multi-age elementary school, this study compares and contrasts two models, one Austrian and one in Israel. Firstly, the study presents the views and actions of the students, teachers and the administrative team to better understand the benefits and challenges of the multi-age classroom. Secondly, the study examines the emotional, social and cognitive characteristics that define multi-age education and thirdly, it looks at the teaching and learning processes that are derived from this structure and the connection with significant learning. This study used qualitative research methods (case studies) and triangulation of participants and research tools.

Occupational therapy (OT) school is where learning begins as students prepare to become future professionals. Thus, effective course design is imperative in professional formation. This study examined the effectiveness of a course designed around andragogical and active learning principles in combination with Fink’s (2013) taxonomy of learning for a blended cohort of face-to-face and hybrid OT students. The study used a mixed methods explanatory sequential design with pre/post surveys, end-of-course evaluations, and focus groups to explore student perceptions and preferences toward learning to create significant learning experiences. One hundred six students completed pre and post testing of the redesigned course, 67 completed end-of-course evaluations from 2018 (pre-redesign), and 90 from 2019 (post-redesign). Nineteen students participated in the focus groups, nine from the campus pathway and 10 from the hybrid pathway. Results suggest the course was effective at helping students achieve a deeper level of understanding and develop self-directed learning habits significantly more so than a traditional lecture format. Students, regardless of the method of course delivery, benefited from active learning strategies and showed a strong preference for assignments and learning activities linked to real-life experiences. Instructors should invite adult OT students to participate as capable and equal partners in the learning process and consider how to best orient students to course content to help them understand the relevance to personal motivations and goals. Results of this study can help instructors create significant learning opportunities that have a distinct value in developing OT practitioners who are lifelong learners for a blended cohort of students.

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has increased significantly since the last decade of the 20th century to the present. This revolution in ICT is having a great impact on all aspects of our lives, including teaching and learning, helping to bring university teaching methodologies closer to the Bologna plan, which promotes a change in pedagogy towards a curriculum based on competencies and that commits to pedagogical practices that are better adapted to the digital-minded students of the new generation. Mobile Learning is a relatively new teaching and learning modality, which allows students and teachers to create new learning environments through the use of mobile devices with internet access. There is a wide variety of mobile devices such as laptops or tablets, but smartphones, because of their versatility and ubiquitous use among the youngest, seem to be the devices use par excellence in education. This paper presents a study in which the usefulness of a chatbot, specifically designed for this purpose, was evaluated through a known mobile application (Telegram) to teach complex theoretical aspects related to the structure and function of the human body in the 1st year of Nursing Degree. Likewise, it was sought to facilitate and promote oral communication as a fundamental professional competence, as well as to favor the creation of learning communities. The data extracted from the use of the chatbot, the anonymous satisfaction questionnaires, and the qualifications obtained suggest that the designed chatbot is a didactic tool that facilitates meaningful learning, the development of transversal competences, and the collaboration among students out of the classroom. We hope this experience serves to encourage the educational community to use chatbots and similar technologies in their classrooms.

Objective: This study aimed to assess whether the adjustment of Fink's Model of Integrated Course Design (ICD) with his Taxonomy of Significant Learning (hereinafter referred to as "ICD/SL") affected the academic performance of students at Universidad El Bosque in the "Basics of Dental Anatomy" course.Design: For this purpose, 3 academic groups were selected: 2018/1 (55 students), 2018/2 (79 students), and 2019/1 (57 students). The control group, 2018/1, was taught without ICD/SL; the 2 treatment groups, 2018/2 and 2019/1, was taught with ICD/SL, which applied revised learning goals based on Fink's Taxonomy and new teaching and evaluation activities. The assessment of academic performance was based on a Likert scale to position student results in each grade score report. Statistical analysis was performed through the Kruskal-Wallis test and P-value through the Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher exact test.Results: The results indicated that the treatment groups evidenced better academic performance in the summative assessment of the partial and final grades. In the treatment groups, 64% to 97% of students were in the High to Excellent segment; in comparison, this percentage in the control group was 44% to 65%. The course's rate of failure dropped from 10.9% in 2018/1 to only 1.7% in 2019/1. All the differences between the treatment and control groups were statistically significant (P < 0.0001).Conclusion: The use of ICD/SL improved the academic performance of students. The use of slide-presentations has become ubiquitous in university majors. Previous research has focused on its general effectiveness, although results are not clearly consistent. The format of the slides has been analysed in few cases and its correspondence with the specific disciplines has never been considered. This study focuses on the perceived attention and significant learning declared by students, connected with the format of the slides predominantly used in different majors. A sample of 1316 university students, distributed in 54 courses in 11 majors that represent Pure Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Engineering was surveyed. Results showed a differential use of visual and textual slides, as well as a clear effect on perceived attention and significant learning when majors were compared. Although the slide-format was expected to be the central variable to explain these results, the complete explanation involves the correspondence of the slide-format with the nature of the contents. In some majors, the use of slides was even counterproductive and the widespread idea that visual format is more effective in general was not supported by results. The object of this article is to reveal the teaching strategies used by teachers for religious education in Temuco, Chile. The paradigm used was qualitative and the design was a single interpretative case study. The data were collected by semi-structured interviews with pupils and religious education (RE) teachers. The results show convergences of successful strategies, such as the use of conversations to form opinions related with the pupils' everyday interests. We conclude that significant learning for catholic religious education in schools (CRES) includes teaching strategies associated with individual and collective reflections and conversations on topical social issues. This paper explains several teaching strategies derived from the Universal Design for Learning movement and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research in High-Impact Educational Practices, especially the work of George Kuh. Two broad themes unite the successful approaches: creating opportunities for intellectual practice through cycles of feedback and establishing relationships between student and instructors, as well as among student peers, throughout the course of a semester. Furthermore, assignments and learning outcomes are enhanced when expectations are made extremely clear through multiple means, including rubrics and labeling of taxonomies of learning. The author argues that employing these methods creates better learning outcomes for all students, not only those with official accommodations. The author uses practical examples from seminar courses in Asian studies and art history to demonstrate specific ways these strategies can be employed to improve student outcomes over the course of a semester.

Issue: Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) focuses on demonstrable outcomes, as well as upholding medical education's accountability to society. Despite calls for a robust, multifaceted approach to competency-based assessment (CBA), lingering critiques exist. These critiques include reductionism, reinforcement of an external locus of control within learners, an loss of focus on learner development. Both CBME and CBA may be strengthened if viewed through the lens of a complementary curriculum design framework that broadens the focus on the learner. Evidence: Researchers and physician organizations have articulated the need for medical practitioners trained to provide optimal care in the rapidly changing care environment. In the drive to ensure accountability to patients and society, CBME may overlook the duty of educators to foster the necessary intrinsic development of learners as holistic professionals. The focus of CBA on outcomes may reward memorization and rote performance but may fail to ensure the underlying comprehension or critical thinking necessary to adapt to the variability of real-life patient care. Learners focus on tasks chosen for assessment; thus, areas less easily assessed may be overlooked or deemed unimportant. Reinforcement for learner motivation becomes externalized in CBA, as opposed to being driven by the desire for self-improvement and self-actualization. A recently proposed framework that views learner development as a process-based improvement cycle, the "Master Adaptive Learner," may help remedy this issue. L. Dee Fink's Taxonomy of Significant Learning aims to create meaningful learning experiences in higher education. This taxonomy consists of six interwoven domains: (a) Learning How to Learn, (b) Foundational Knowledge, (c) Application, (d) Integration, (e) Human Dimension, and (f) Caring. Each domain encompasses a unique perspective on the learning process, and when collectively applied to curriculum design, significant learning occurs. This taxonomy has not been widely applied to medical education but may offer an important counterbalance to the outcomes-based focus of CBME. Implications: The outcomes-based focus of CBME is well suited for skill-based tasks, such as procedures, that are observable and measurable. However, other essential physician skills—such as critical thinking, reflection, empathy, and self-directed learning—are not easily assessed, and thus may receive little focus in an outcomes-based model. This paper describes pedagogical efforts implemented to promote significant learning in a computational chemistry course. The taxonomy of significant learning advanced by Fink (2013) is used as a framework to discuss the results. Fink identifies six categories of learning: foundational, application, integration, human dimension, caring, and learning how to learn. Significant learning occurs when all six kinds of learning are promoted. In the computational chemistry course, the learning outcomes are aligned with these kinds of learning, and students are provided with learning activities to get them engaged with the course content. These activities purposefully activate students' prior knowledge, increase their motivation, develop basic skills, apply and integrate what they learn in realistic situations, develop an appreciation for computational chemistry as an ally in science, and further their ability to work independently and with others, and to continue learning about the subject matter beyond the course. This study aims to show how the integration of passive and active learning approaches contributes towards the significant understanding of problems associated with sustainable development. To do this, a case study from the municipality of San Miguel de Achiutla in Oaxaca, Mexico, is used as a general method, with the specific procedure including an instrument based on secondary sources representing the passive learning phase, as well as an instrument created on the basis of primary sources, designed in relation to the active learning component. The passive learning phase enabled us to identify variables pertaining to the highly vulnerable dimensions of sustainable development, and to also detect areas in which there is a deficit of information, since not all data are available, while the active learning phase revealed the causes of vulnerability from the perspective of different agents, including those who experienced the issues directly. In view of the above, we conclude that rather than being exclusive, these two different approaches should in fact be complementary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collaborative learning consists in the realization of team-work where social, personal and professional skills are practiced. This article represents the results of an opinion survey that we realized with 96 students from some Ecuadorian Universities in December in 2016. This survey deals with aspects that are connected with collaborative teaching techniques at classrooms. The article also contains a brief revision of different learning models. The results show that the application of this teaching system in high education is problematic for some students. However more than 60% of the survey respondents admitted that team-work may help then in their future profession. Furthermore they acquired more knowledge through this way of learning. This paper explains several teaching strategies derived from the Universal Design for Learning movement and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research in High-Impact Educational Practices, especially the work of George Kuh. Two broad themes unite the successful approaches: creating opportunities for intellectual practice through cycles of feedback and establishing relationships between student and instructors, as well as among student peers, throughout the course of a semester. Furthermore, assignments and learning outcomes are enhanced when expectations are made extremely clear through multiple means, including rubrics and labeling of taxonomies of learning. The author argues that employing these methods creates better learning outcomes for all students, not only those with official accommodations. The author uses practical examples from seminar courses in Asian studies and art history to demonstrate specific ways these strategies can be employed to improve student outcomes over the course of a semester. In many schools of architecture worldwide, design studios are frequently isolated from everyday life and tend to focus on theory without experience. In countries with complex social problems, such as Colombia, experiential learning can offer valuable opportunities for architectural education to become an agency for social reconstruction and peace building. This works proposes a teaching method which centres on the promotion of significant learning, through live projects as a complement to studio-based projects. Bloom’s revised taxonomy and Fink’s taxonomy for levels of knowledge were used as references. In order to develop and test this method, 15 different live projects were designed, built and analysed over the course of four years. These involved the participation of 170 undergraduate learners, various national and international teachers, six sponsors from the construction industry and 12 children’s foundations. The findings reveal valuable insights into the development of intellectual, physical and emotional dimensions through these experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The experience of being a novice sailor has put me in a peculiar, but privileged position to gain a deeper understanding of the experience of an adult learner who is also a competent professional. I initially used first-person writing in order to express and explore my experience of a week of sailing in the Norfolk Broads. I tried to capture, among many things, my fear of falling in the water, of failing and of embarrassment. I described how I overcame my fear as I enjoyed small success at simple tasks. I then reflected on what I could learn about these experiences in nine themes, drawing on ideas by Maslow (1968/1972) on growth and safety, but also by Rogers (1951) on significant learning, and the all-important role of support and skilful guidance, with doctoral students and supervisors in mind. I drew on Shotter's (1993, 2013) notions of "joint action" and "third agency" in order to explore the student-supervisor relationship and the construction of knowledge that takes place during a doctorate. This author's ideas seemed particularly well-suited to the description of learning and supervising, as involving a way of being in which we are mostly responding to the requirements of concrete circumstances in a fluid process. I tried to infer what the appropriate skills and pedagogical strategies needed on the part of the supervisor may be. However, it is possible that the readers discover more possibilities hidden in the metaphor of learning to sail as they apply it to their own experience of learning in the doctoral programme. Inicialmente, usé un escrito en primera persona para expresar y explorar my experiencia de una semana navegando en velero en los Norfolk Broads. Intenté captar, entre otras cosas, mi miedo de caer al agua, de fracasar y de hacer el ridículo. Describàcómo me sobrepuse at miedo a medida que disfrutaba pequeños éxitos en tareas sencillas. Luego reflexioné sobre lo que podía aprender de esas experiencias en nueve temas, basado en ideas de Maslow (1968/1972) sobre el crecimento y la seguridad, pero también de Rogers (1951) sobre el aprendizaje significativo y el paper fundamental del apoyo y la orientación, con los alumnos de doctorado y sus supervisors en mente. Hice uso de las nociones de “accion conjunta” y “tercera agencia” de Shotter (1993, 2013). Las ideas de este autor resultaron particularmente apropiadas para describir el aprendizaje y la supervisión, en tanto que involucran una forma de ser en la que, por sobre todo, respondemos a los requerimentos de las circunstancias concretas en un proceso fluido. Concerned about the success rate of new students in our program we designed and implemented a compulsory set of experiences which aim to support students in their transition from high school to university by 1) developing their sense of belonging to a community of learners and by 2) articulating with them the interrelationships among their first year core courses. We initiated various strategies which we have refined in response to student feedback over the past three years. In this paper we describe the pedagogical moves that constitute our initiative and the lessons we learned. We explore essential academic and personal issues that first-year students in all programs face. We share our research findings and address the big ideas that could be applied to any discipline or multi-disciplinary program.

Aim To identify items for a new instrument that measures emotional behaviour abilities of meaningful learning, according to Fink's Taxonomy. Background Meaningful learning is an active process that promotes a wider and deeper understanding of concepts. It is the result of an interaction between new and previous knowledge and produces a long-term change of knowledge and skills. To measure meaningful learning capability, it is very important in the education of health professionals to identify problems or special learning needs. For this reason, it is necessary to create valid instruments. Design A Delphi Study technique was implemented in four phases by means of e-mail. Methods The study was conducted from April-September 2015. An expert panel consisting of ten researchers with experience in Fink's Taxonomy was established to identify the items of the instrument. Data were analysed for conceptual description and item characteristics and attributes were rated. Expert consensus was sought in each of these phases. An 87·5% consensus cut-off was established. Results After four rounds, consensus was obtained for validation of the content of the instrument 'Assessment of Meaningful learning Behavioural and Emotional Abilities'. This instrument consists of 56 items evaluated on a 6-point Likert-type scale. Foundational Knowledge, Application, Integration, Human Dimension, Caring and Learning How to Learn were the six major categories explored. Conclusions This content validated tool can help educators (teachers, trainers and tutors) to identify and improve the strategies to support students' learning capability, which could increase their awareness of and/or responsibility in the learning process. Every year in Virginia, many teachers instruct students that capitalism is a system in which government stays out of the way. The author of this review, being a former high school teacher in Virginia, taught this very concept. Nevertheless, Sven Beckert tells a different story in his book Empire of Cotton: A Global History. Beckert argues that not only was the state involved in the development of capitalism, but also “the needs of nation-states were not conflicting”, meaning that in many instances capitalism intertwined with goals of the state. He uses a commodity, cotton, as a centerpiece to exemplify his point. From the onset, the reader may think they are embarking on a history of cotton, but that is not Beckert’s goal. His goal is to tell the story of capitalism, by focusing on a topicthat everyone knows something about: cotton.

We show in this work an analysis about how secondary school textbooks are considering Atomic Models (Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and the current model). For this study we have analysed different publishing houses for the last four Spanish secondary school courses. The analysis was set according to current science didactic considerations. The results have detected some conceptual mistakes, a poor spiral development and a didactic strategy focused in a memoristical way to teach these models.

A linha de pesquisa em multimodos e múltiplas representações vem atualmente sendo inspiradora de ações instrucionais na educação científica. Partindo dos fundamentos que justificam um encaminhamento didático à luz dessas referências, este trabalho procura mostrar que há compatibilidade dos seus fundamentos com a teoria da aprendizagem significativa de Ausubel e com as questões levantadas pelas pesquisas que indicam a necessidade de se considerar a subjetividade dos alunos presentes numa sala de aula. Essencialmente, procuramos argumentar que a promoção de um ensino por meio de multimodos e múltiplas representações é consistente com o ambiente plural das subjetividades existentes numa sala de aula e com uma aprendizagem significativa.The research line in multi-modal and multiple representations is being currently inspiring instruction of actions in the scientific education. Starting by the foundations that justify a didactic direction in the light of theses references, this work tries to show that there is compatibility of their foundations with the theory of the significant learning of Ausubel, and with the lifted up subjects for the researches that indicate the need to consider the students' subjective diversity present in a classroom. Essentially, we tried to argue that the promotion of a teaching through multiple and multi-modal representation is consistent with the plural atmosphere of the existent subjectivities in a classroom and with a significant learning.

This action research examines experiences that students in a grade 10 EFL class had with redesigning a grammar-unit into a topic-based unit. Strategies were formulating significant learning goals and objectives, and implementing and reflecting on activities with three dimensions of Dee Fink's (2003) taxonomy of significant learning: the human dimension, integration, and application. Students reported positive perceptions about learning with and about others, learning about themselves, integrating language and topics to their lives, and recycling and applying topics to other formats. They became more active and reflective language learners. Difficulties were linking significant unit goals and objectives to all participants' needs and interests, students' initial unwillingness to learn about others, and students' limited proficiency for integrating and applying English.
