Patchiness is a critical functional feature of arid lands, increasing productivity and diversity, but there is little information on the long-term dynamics of patch formation. While plant-created heterogeneity is widespread, grazing reduces plant density, hence removing patchiness. Patchiness is also associated with fallen logs and it is particularly important to assess this association in grazed areas, as there are few patches which are not created by living plants. We studied differences in soil nutrient content and soil seed bank associated with the presence of logs in the long ungrazed Koonamore Vegetation Reserve and an adjacent heavily grazed paddock in chenopod shrublands of South Australia. We studied soil properties associated with fallen logs of unknown age, and others known to have persisted for up to 78 years. Logs acted as traps for soil nutrients and seeds. Organic carbon was higher in soils associated with logs, and also higher inside the reserve than in the grazed paddock. Propagule number and species richness were higher next to logs than in open spaces and viable seeds were in much higher abundance next to logs in the grazed paddock than any other site. Increased time in situ of a log had a relatively small effect on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen. Logs act as resource traps which may enhance the diversity of the system, and may be particularly important for maintaining patches of resources in areas of severe grazing damage. Calculating the age of trees is often desirable in vegetation studies, but is sometimes difficult. In arid areas in particular, tree rings may not be annual, and growth may be related more to rainfall than annual cycles. A relationship between age and trunk circumference was developed for two species, Acacia aneura and Myoporum platycarpum, based on measurements of trees of known age (<80 years) growing on permanent quadrats on the Koonamore Reserve, in semi-arid South Australia. Extrapolation beyond the known ages was made by finding the maximum girth of mature trees in a larger population and using this to estimate an asymptote to which the curve is constrained to approach. We envisage that the techniques developed here could be applied to other species of a similar nature, those for which there is no relationship between number of tree rings and age. We investigated the effects of waterlogging and salinity on the water relations of Eucalyptus gracilis F. Muell. growing within the Stockyard Plain Disposal Basin Reserve, 15 km southwest of Waikerie, South Australia. Presence and depth of the saline groundwater had relatively little effect on the water relations of the trees even when large differences in tree health were visible. Predawn water potential, stomatal conductance, and foliar sodium and potassium concentrations were similar for all individuals independent of the depth and salinity of the groundwater. As expected, the severity of water stress increased over summer when predawn water potentials became progressively more negative and foliar salt concentrations increased. These changes occurred in all plants independent of depth or salinity of the groundwater.

The impact of soil salinity and host water status on the host / parasite association between Eucalyptus largiflorens (F.Muell.) and Amyema miquelii (Lehm. ex Miq.) Tiegh. was investigated in a semi-arid floodplain environment in southern Australia. Water status of potential hosts (i.e. uninfected E. largiflorens) was assessed at a range of sites with different soil salinities and then compared with mistletoe infection at the same sites. Pre-dawn leaf water potentials (Ψ) of uninfected E. largiflorens declined with increasing salinity, while leaf δ 13 C values increased. The proportion of infected E. largiflorens at each site decreased significantly with increasing soil salinity. A significant relationship was found between the proportion of infected trees at each site and leaf δ 13 C values, but not pre-dawn Ψ, of potential hosts. The impact of mistletoes on water status of infected trees was also investigated. Among infected trees, we found no significant relationship between mistletoe volume and either pre-dawn Ψ or leaf δ 13 C values of hosts. However, there was a significant relationship between host midday leaf Ψ and mistletoe volume, with hosts exhibiting increased stress as mistletoe volume increased. The data suggest that increasing water and / or salinity stress make E. largiflorens a less suitable host for A. miquelii.
