Scope of this study was to identify motivational factors related to specific recreational sport event: 'Wild league' in water polo, which takes place in Dubrovnik, have very long tradition. First goal of the study is to determine the relationship between motivational factors related to this event, as well as with socio-demographic variables. Second goal is to determine the differences in motivational factors, according to several independent variables, mainly related to the previous experiences with sports and touristic destination. The cross-sectional study is conducted. The sample of 125 participants was examined, using the Questionnaire on sports event. All participants were Croatian citizens, excluding those who are born, and currently live in Dubrovnik. Major sports tourism motives of the potential tourists in this sporting event, were obtained. In general, the importance of the benefits of sports and tourist destination prevailed, as compared with their limitations, which appeared as an important factor only in participants who didn't visited Dubrovnik yet. At the participants, pull factors, i.e. advanced sports and travel motives slightly dominated over push motives, but statistically significant only in females, who expressed more sophisticated pulling tourist motives, such as the acquisition of knowledge about the destination. Correlations indicate that previous interest in sport, particularly in water polo and Wild League, are moderate positively associated with pushing motives. Moreover, previous recreationally engaging in sports, as well as destination-related origin, appeared as the important factors for having more emphasized pull motives for visiting this sport event. Level of the education did not appear as important factor in differentiating main type of motives in target population. Results provide initial information about the possibility of profiling potential tourists who could be motivated to visit the destination by this particular sports event.

The role of jealousy in sport, as a negative emotional reaction, accompanied by thoughts of inadequacy when compared to others, is the issue of this article. This study had a purpose to define the characteristic profiles of the Croatian athletes, based on single items of Sport Jealousy Scale (SJS II), labeled by several variables: gender, type of sport, age group. Purposive sample of 73 athletes competing at Croatian championships in different sports (football, bowling, volleyball and handball) were examined with Croatian version of SJS-II. Three clusters obtained are similarly balanced, according to the number of cases in each cluster. The most simply explained, clusters clearly differentiate the most jealous, moderately jealous and slightly/low jealous athletes. Among the features of the athletes in each cluster, in the most jealous (first) cluster are the athletes from team sports, women and older athletes. Females, bowling athletes, athletes from individual (coactive) sports and the youngest athletes are the least jealous (grouped in third cluster).

During working with athletes, important is the understanding how psychological factors affect the performance of an individual: considering individual differences among athletes is necessary. Characteristics closely related to stress and coping with stress in athletes are mental toughness (toughness) and hardiness, which actually describe how an individual cope with stress and how remains resistant to stress. Main aim of this study is to determine the basic psychometric characteristics of Mental Toughness /Hardiness Scale (SMZO), as a part of the battery called Multidimensional questionnaire of sporting excellence (MUSI). Second aim is related to the determination of the differences in specific aspects of mental toughness/ hardiness, with regard to gender, type of sport, age group of athletes and the type of engagement in sport. Then we are determined the correlations established between some aspects of mental toughness/ hardiness, with chronological age of the athletes and their sports experience. A total of 248 participants is examined, 103 male athletes (age 24.52 ± 11.80 years) and 145 female athletes (age 16.61 ± 6.69 years), from Croatian sports clubs, engaged in 16 different sports. Factor analysis and determining the reliability type internal consistency showed that one-factor solution of SMZO has satisfactory reliability and validity. The means for all aspects of mental toughness / hardiness are above the theoretical average, both for male and female athletes, while the number of statistically significant differences in relation to independent variables is small. None statistically significant correlations are found, in relation to athletes' age and sports experience.

The goals of this study were: to determine the possibility of forecasting for the preferences of cycling on the basis of all relevant factors Zagreb cycling (1) and to determine the differences between the participants in all the relevant factors in Zagreb cycling, by gender, in relation to membership in the Association "Trad Union of bicyclists", type of cycling and part of the city where cyclists live (2). Over 3000 members of the Association and cyclists who are not members of the Association ("average" cyclist) are tested, using conveniently assembled questionnaire. It turned out that latent dimensions of the sub-questionnaires well represented themes: barriers to cycling, the role of the City in bicycle traffic, the purpose of using bicycle accident during bicycle traffic. People who are more inclined to participate in city traffic riding, often believe that the City should significantly improve conditions for cycling, tend to safer driving and more negative estimate lack of road cycling conditions in Zagreb. Women and members of the Union of cyclists often feel that the City should improve conditions for cycling and negatively evaluate the existing conditions of cycling, more often use the bike for different purposes and had frequent accidents bicycle. In the northern part of the city, Samobor, Zaprešić and Sesvete, Dugo Selo and Ivanja Reka participants were assessed to have the most adverse road conditions for cycling, while the wider center of Zagreb currently has the most favorable conditions for cycling. The results provide the guidance for improving the safety of the cycling in Zagreb and its surrounding, for taking constructive social actions at the state level and on the local-community level, as well as in the broader context of sustainable development.

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in underlying factors of Zagreb cycling, compared to the "types of cyclists" (driving style), i.e. different ways of using bicycles as a means of transport. The study included over 3,000 frequent participants in urban traffic cycling, sample of members of the association Cyclist Union (N = 1259) and snowball sample of "typical" of cyclists, i.e. people who are using the bike, but are not the members of the Cyclist Union (N = 1831), using the conveniently assembled questionnaire. Study participants who bike used in various applications prefer the safest driving style (only on sidewalks and bike paths / lines). Barriers of the weather conditions are ubiquitous in the safest driving style. Daily, weekly and yearly riding a bicycle are more often found in those who prefer the safest driving style. Cyclists who drive with medium secure style (roads with less traffic and lower speeds), more often ride a bike, as compared with those who prefer the safest driving style. Having a better bike line / track and other infrastructure is the most often considered at those with the highest risk driving style. The results provide the guidance for local authorities and for the cyclists to improve the conditions for a safer and more often by bicycle circulation in the City of Zagreb and its surroundings.

The main aim of the study was to compare the differences and correlations in psychological skills important for the sport achievement in two samples: 86 Croatian trainers of various sports and 86 recreational table tennis players, using adjusted Dutch Youth Version of the Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS-Youth). The relationship among different psychological skills are established separately on each sample, according the education level, age, league, position on the ranking list, years of playing. The differences in psychological skills are analysed according to different independent variables. Separate correlation matrices for the sport trainers and recreational table tennis players indicate similar trends in both studied samples. Variables such as degree, age, rank of league, position on the ranking list, years of playing low correlated with psychological skills. Among all the tested psychological skills, motivation is the most important psychological skill that distinguishes athletes and coaches in most of the independent variables: coaches who have completed their athletic career voluntarily or because of lack of further ambitions have more pronounced motivation.

The aim of the study was to determine the differences between the aspects of aggressive behavior, their strengths (protective factors) in the prevention of behavioral disorders and academic achievement, in children within and out of institutional forms of education. The study was conducted on a sample of 264 students in seventh and eighth class of elementary school, of whom 134 were in institutional care, while 130 were outside the institutional forms of education. Data were collected by a questionnaire, which included two measuring instruments: Check-list of advantages and Buss & Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). The children who live in institutional care showed a higher incidence of aggressive behavior, compared with children who are out of institutional care. Children placed in institutional care have less protective factors for the prevention of behavioral disorders, worse general school success, as well as poorer success in Nature/ Biology, compared to non-institutional children. A negative and statistically significant relationship was found between the incidence of aggressive behaviors and protective factors in the prevention of conduct disorder, as well as between the incidence of aggressive behavior and overall school success. A significant positive correlation was found between the protective factors and success in the English language. The results indicate the necessity to consider alternative forms of care for children without parental care, in close cooperation of all relevant institutions and individuals who take care for children.

The main objective of this study was to construct an measuring instrument for estimating the attitudes about inclusion. The sample of preschool teachers from kindergartens in Osijek and Zagreb was examined, using the questionnaire Atittudes of the experts about the inclusion of children with development disabilities. We have confirmed the existence of seven latent dimensions of attitudes about the inclusion, defined as a simple linear combination of the items that define each factor, showing low and marginally satisfactory reliability, which ranges from very low (organizational adaptation, monitoring the inclusion criteria) to moderately high. From all the correlations between the dimensions of attitudes about inclusion, more than a third of them are mainly low, but statistically significantly and positively correlated. Based on the established metric characteristics, measuring instrument can be considered sufficiently good initial starting point for the construction of the final version of the instrument, intended for the evaluation of training on inclusion of preschool children's teachers.

Sport psychologist needs to understand how psychological factors affect athletic performance of an individual, considering individual differences among athletes. Each specific problem in working with athletes must be considered depending on complex factors: the type (specificity) of sport; characteristics of the activity (the training or competition); stages of athletes’ sports development; gender and age differences, etc. Although there are numerous psychological instruments, which assess psychological characteristics of athletes, it is important to select instruments adjusted to athletes, working style of sports psychologist, available time and other constraints. Here, we have formulated a preliminary version of our own battery of questionnaires, named Multi¬di¬men¬sional Inventory of Sport Excellence (MUSI), selecting the items for following psychological characteristics: energizing, main¬tain¬ing attention, directing attention, wide internal / external attention and narrow internal / external attention. In this phase of the stu¬dy, participants were stratified only by gender. Sample of 248 participants was examined, of which 103 male athletes (age 24.52 ± 11.80 years) and 145 female athletes (age 16.61 ± 6.69 years), from the Croatian sports clubs, competing in 16 different sports (archery, football, handball, bocce, bowling, cycling, karate, rowing, tennis, volleyball, basketball, synchronized swimming, tri¬a¬t¬h¬lon, table tennis, chess, badminton). Data were collected from March to June 2014 in Rijeka, during the trainings in sports clubs. Results of Principal Component Analysis and the reliabilities type internal consistency showed that each of sub-question¬na¬ires from battery MUSI have satisfactory reliability and construct validity, giving positive guidance for future adaptation of the que¬stion¬naire to specific subpopulations of athletes.

This paper presents two types of bias that occur relatively often when using multivariate analysis. For both types of bias, it is characteristic that the number and choice of different types of variables are not balanced by application of clear methodological rules. Following the interpretation of broader theoretical positions, which include "confirmation bias" ( of initial hypothesis) and "misspecification bias", a description of two types of bias characteristic of multivariate analysis are given: "mixed-level bias" (in terms of specificity - generality) and "mixed- constructs bias" . Both types of bias further enhance the disparity in the number and ratio of different types of variables in the same multivariate analysis. Details of situations, when these two types of bias appear, are presented and displayed in four different examples. Several strategies are proposed as to how these types of bias can try to be avoided, during the preparation of studies, during the statistical analyses and their interpretation.

The aim was to investigate whether social skills’ training (SST) influences the attitudes towards communication skills learning and to validate Communication Skills Attitudes Scale (CSAS) among students of health studies in the Republic of Croatia. SST (10 workshops) was implemented for this purpose. 70 students of 1st year in four Croatian university health studies were randomly selected to take part in the training and 169 students were a part of the control group. CSAS was applied at the beginning and end of the training to both groups. The results indicated good metric characteristics in relation to CSAS and its two-factor structure (positive attitude scale and negative attitude scale). Furthermore, we did not record significant change in attitudes towards communication skills learning in both groups. However, pursuant to average results from the subscales attitudes towards communication skills learning, we noticed that the negative attitudes tend to decrease and positive tend to increase. This indicates that 10 workshops might have been insufficient in order to change the attitude.

CRIBS, pregnancy, homocisteine, biomarker, newborns` anthropometry - Abstract
Homocysteine is an amino acid involved in several key metabolic processes. In the general population hyperhomocysteinaemia is an indicator of vascular disease, while in normal pregnancy homocysteine blood levels falls. The objective of this study was to examine associations of homocisteine in pregnant women with possible predisposing factors (older age, smoking status, physical inactivity, hypertension), pregnancy outcomes (preterm birth, small/normal/large for gestational age) and newborns` anthropometry (measures z- standardized according to WHO). Fasting homocisteine concentration, taken between 22nd and 26th week of gestation, were determined in 116 women, participants in the CRoatian Islands` Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS). Homocisteine below than referent range (3.4- 20.4 µmol/L) was determined in 19 women (16.4%) while its concentration in others was within the referent range. None of the investigated predisposing factors was significantly associated with predicting homocisteine level, nor were pregnancy outcomes. Newborns of mothers with homocisteine

The intrauterine environment affects fetal growth and development. Healthy women with no history of chronic diseases, who concieved naturally and had singleton pregnancies have been participating in the CRoatian Islands` Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS), an ongoing project in the Eastern Adriatic, Croatia, aiming to assess the prevalence of risk factors for the Metabolic Syndrom. Fasting blood lipids (tot- Chol, Trig, HDL-Chol and LDL-Chol), glucose and homocysteine levels were determined in 94 pregnant women (taken between 22th and 26th week of gestation). We investigated their association with possible predisposing factors (age, gestational age, level of education, obesity and smoking status), newborns` anthropometric measures (weight, lenght and head circumference) and with adverse pregnancy outcomes (pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, small/large for gestational age). Among the blood lipids, the largest divergence was found in triglyceride levels (mean 4.2±1.1, range 0.9-11), with elevated values (>1.7 mmol/L) present in >75% of the examinees. Smokers, in comparison to non-smokers, had significantly lower HDL-Chol levels and women older than 30 years had significantly higher tot-Chol than younger ones. Women with higher mean glucose levels (but within the normal range) gave birth to children with significantly higher weight- at-birth z-standardized according to WHO, and women with low homocysteine levels (

language learning strategies, construction of a questionnaire, metric characteristics, multicultural context, intercultural dialogue - Abstract
Learning strategies are special thoughts or behaviours that individuals use to understand, learn or retain new information, according to the point of view of O'Malley & Chamot. The other view, promoted by Oxford, believes learning strategies are specific actions taken by the learner to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, and more transferrable to new situations of language learning and use. The use of appropriate strategies ensures greater success in language learning. The aim of the research was to establish metric characteristics of the Questionnaire on learning strategies created by the author, in line with the template of the original SILL questionnaire (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning). The research was conducted at the Rochester Institute of Technology Croatia on a sample of 201 participants who learned German, Spanish, French and Italian as a foreign language. The results have shown that one-component latent dimensions which describe the space of foreign language learning strategies according to Oxford’s classification, have metric characteristics which are low, but still satisfactory (reliability and validity). All dimensions of learning strategies appeared not to be adequately defined. Therefore, we excluded compensation strategies and merged social and affective strategies into social-affective strategies into the unique dimension. Overall, this version of Oxford’s original questionnaire, based on Oxford's theoretical construct, applied on Croatian students, clearly shows that current version of the questionnaire has poor metric characteristics. One of the explanations of the results obtained could be positioned in multicultural context and intercultural dialogue. Namely, particular social, political and economic context in Croatia could shape even foreign language learning strategies.

Concentration of lipoprotein (a), Lp(a), an important part of the clinical biomarker profile for atherosclerosis, in blood plasma varies both between and among populations. The elevated Lp(a) level in pregnancy were recognized as a risk factor for thrombosis and/or pre-eclampsia, but the referent values for uneventful pregnancies are yet undefined. The objective of this study was to test the association of fasting Lp(a) levels, taken between 22nd and 26th week of gestation, with possible predisposing factors (older age, smoking status, physical inactivity, hypertension, gestational diabetes), pregnancy outcomes (preterm birth, small/normal/large for gestational age) and newborns` anthropometric measures in 113 women (age range 19.8-41.7 yrs, mean 30.6±4.6 yrs) from the CRoatian Islands` Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS). In these women, with no history of chronic disease prior to pregnancy, Lp(a) leves varied largely, from 1.0 mg/dl to 127.3 mg/dl (median 13.1 mg/dl), but most of the women (88.5%) had Lp(a) 35 yrs), smoking statuts (both current and ex-smokers) and hypertension in predicting Lp(a)≥50 mg/dL (p=0.017, Cox & Snell R2=0.162, Nagelkerke R2=0.333). Nor logistic, neither linear regression models used for the estimation of adjusted associations between Lp(a) and birth weight, length and head circumference, all z- standardized according to WHO, showed significant associations. In the CRIBS sample, elevated Lp(a) levels were not found to be a predictive biomarker for the pregnancy outcome and neonatal size.

Introduction. Main research objective is analysis of the grouping of the students of the University of Ljubljana, with respect to the intensity of different types of exercise participation motives, to their gender, type and year of the study, level of physical activity, status of physical education class, organization of physical activities during study and place of residence. Methods. Data were collected using personal data sheets during enrolling students in the University of Ljubljana. Students completed The Exercise Motivations Inventory (EMI-2), with additional data about socio-demographic parameters. Results. The results reveal that the students could be grouped in three distinctive clusters, which can be very clearly explained, in terms of the prevalence of exercise participation motives in general. Students grouped in the first cluster have the lowest average values (means) in all exercise participation motives. The students grouped in the second cluster have the profile with moderate means in all exercise participation motives, while the students grouped in the third cluster have the profile with the highest means in all exercise participation motives. Conclusion. The results indicate overall higher motivation for physical activity in men. All the sub-samples are different in their relevant features used in clustering (e.g. male students are dominant in life sciences, etc.), what provide a guide for the explanation of the results obtained, but also for practical implications.

The goals of the research were to determine the construct validity and reliability of two psychological instruments (AIMS) and (PSICA) applied on samples of college sport students ; the correlations between the students’ competition rank, years of engaging in sport, and level of physical exercise ; the differences among the universities in different countries, as well as among students from different years of study. The stratified sample included students from six universities, in total 1498 female and male college sport students, with an average age of 20.35±1.76 years (males) and 20.14±1.55 years (females). Both psychological measuring instruments showed very satisfactory psychometric properties. Reliability is particularly high for males for AIMS, while the reliabilities for PSICA are mainly moderate to high and lower than for AIMS. The results could be explained in terms of cultural and organizational differences, and provide the information about directions in designing efficient programs for physical exercise.

The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) on Eastern Adriatic islands is higher than in neighboring mainland area. The CRoatian Islands` Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS) is an ongoing 3-year-project with an aim to assess the prevalence of known risk factors for MetS. The CRIBS sample consists of pregnant women from Dalmatian islands Brač and Hvar and nearby coastal town Split and its surroundings, who had no history of chronic diseases (particularly MetS), who conceived naturally and had singleton pregnancies, and their newborns. We tested the association of possible predisposing factors for MetS (age, smoking, prepregnancy BMI, fasting blood biochemical parameters) and newborns` anthropometric measures. In this preliminary sample (n=131, age range 19.8-41.7 yrs, mean 30.6±4.6 yrs), 28.3% of women reported smoking in pregnancy and 22.2% reported being exposed to passive smoking. 17.9% of all the women were overweight and 4.7% were obese. The study sample consisted of 372 preschool girls. The measurements were carried out four times (in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013). The sample of variables consisted of eight anthropometric measures. For the purpose of establishing the differences in anthropometric characteristics between girls for which measurements were taken four times over the period of fifteen years, the ANOVA was used, with Bonferonni post-hoc test. The obtained results reflect the inharmonious trend of change in certain anthropometric characteristics, which were established for girls at preschool age, during the observed period of fifteen years. Statistically significant differences between the generations of girls were not found only in two variables: Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body weight. The results obtained, not only regarding secular trends, but also the absolute values of means for the relevant variables (e.g. BMI), indicate important practical implications.

The objective of this study is to determine the basic metrical properties of the tests for the assessment latent dimensions of motor abilities at four-year children. Sample included 50 children aged 4 years (±6 months) from three kindergartens in Zagreb, during the first half of 2015. Battery of tests that assess the hypothetical motor abilities (coordination, speed, balance, and strength) was applied. Reliabilities of the tests varied in the range from 0.45 to 0.96 (Cronbach’s alpha). Already satisfactory discriminability is not found only for tests two-leg jumping through hoops and standing on one leg. Homogeneity of the tests varies in range from 0.22 to 0.89 (average inter-item correlation). Analysis of the construct validity revealed two-component structure which has very low reliability of the second component. Results indicate the potential for constructing new instruments for measuring motor abilities in four-aged children, on a larger sample of participants.

The CRoatian Islands` Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS) is an ongoing project in Split-Dalmatia County (towns of Split and Solin, islands of Brač and Hvar), with an aim to assess the prevalence of variety of risk factors (biological, medical, epidemiological, environmental and psychosocial) for the Metabolic Syndrom (MetS) in the sample of up to 700 healthy pregnant women and their newborns. The project started in November 2015, and since February 2016 pregnant women have been enrolling in the study at several specialist gynecological practices. Here we present the preliminary results of the reproductive health characteristics (age at menarche, use of contraceptives before the pregnancy, age at primiparity) and the sociodemographic characteristics (place of residence, educational attainment, employment and financial status) of the first 50 pregnant women who decided to participate in the CRIBS study. The mean age at menarche of the CRIBS pregnant women was 12.92±1.19 yrs, and age at primiparity ranged from 19.15 yrs to 34.51 yrs (mean 25.51±4.07 yrs, p=ns between mainland and islands). Many enrolled women (82%) reported using no contraceptives before the pregnancy. In women who already had 2 or more children (n=7), the mean age difference between the offspring was 5.25±3.93 yrs (range 2.23-13.36 yrs). 94% of women reported being married or having a partner, who was in 87% of cases older than his wife/partner. 52% of pregnant women attained high level education, 70% were employed, 60% owned house/flat, and 90% perceived their financial status as average or better than average. This preliminary data show that pregnant women from the CRIBS study are on average younger at primiparity than the national mean is, use contraceptives very rarely, and, in spite of the significant percentage of unemployment, perceive that their financial status was good enough to raise a family.

Links between morphological characteristics (MC), motor abilities (MA) and psychological preparedness (PP) for school in preschool aged girls, could help in improving the quality of educational work for their teachers. The main goal of the study was to determine the correlation between three sets of data: MA, MC and PP. The randomized sample of preschool girls (N=127), aged 6-7, was examined. Fourteen MCs were measured. To measure MAs of the participants, 18 composite motor tests are adjusted for preschool children, three for each motor dimension: coordination, flexibility, strength, agility, accuracy and balance. Test for School Preparedness (TSS) with five subtests was used in estimating PP. The correlations between MC, MA and PP at preschool girls were determined by the use of both univariate and canonical correlations. The results revealed that all canonical correlations were statistically significant: between MC and MA, MA and PP, as well as MC and PP. However, in spite of its significance, canonical correlation is the lowest between MC and PP. One of the hypothesis in explaining this relationship could be the speed of maturity, which is different in preschool girls and boys.

The main goal of the research is to determine the differences in certain dimensions in the battery of the psychological questionnaires within Multidimensional Scale of Sports’ Psychological Talents (MSSPT) in male handball players, according to their club, age group, winning medals and membership in junior national team. Second goal was to determine the profiles of male handball players in all examined psychological characteristics in MSSPT. The purposeful sample of 127 male handball players was examined, members of the teams Prvo plinarsko društvo, Metalac (Zagreb) and Zamet (Rijeka). In this study, three instruments from the battery MSSPT are used: Mental Energy Scale (MES), Athletic Engagement Scale (AES) and Optimism Scale (OS). The results revealed that the most significant differences are found in dimensions of MSSPT between the players of different age groups, while no differences are found according to winning medals in junior state championship, or according to the membership in the junior national team. K-means clustering revealed two profiles of male handball players. In the first cluster are older players with higher means in Self-esteem and Energy as strength while making errors, while in the second cluster are grouped younger players with higher means in all other psychological characteristics.

Personalized medicine means satisfying patients’ psychological and health needs as well as growing demands for health professionals. Consequently, social skills appear as an important factor during health professionals’ education and practical work. Within processes of improving health education and health care, selection and education of health studies students are of particular importance. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of personality antecedents that reflect social skills of health studies students and to predict their achievement in health studies. Research was conducted in two phases: November 2015 (initial phase) and July 2016 (final evaluation). Variables used in the study were as follows: Big Five Questionnaire (Caprara, Barbaranelli & Borgogni, 2005) ; Emotional Competence Questionnaire (Takšić, 2002) ; Academic Achievement (mean, weighted mean) and Study Satisfaction Scale (Chen & Lo, 2012). Main research finding is the fact that the possibility of academic success and study satisfaction forecast based on three groups of predictors is actually very small. There are only two statistically significant predictors for academic success criterion: high school success and state matura success in the expected direction, which means that the students with better high school success and better state matura results achieve better academic success. However, there is no statistically significant positive correlation between state matura success and school marks success in this sample of respondents. This finding can be expected since higher correlation values between these two high school success indicators are rarely found in certain study program samples (due to homogeneity of students enrolling certain study program and consequently less variability in school success indicators) (Jukic, Anticevic, Svaljug and Orlandini, 2016). Insight into this study could provide information on how to use these findings as a guideline for observing relevant psychological characteristics during selection and education of professionals, as well as for certain aspects of health professionals’ practical work.

The theories on second language acquisition (SLA) differently estimate the importance of individual factors in language acquisition. Within those factors, the importance of motivation as well as demotivation is essential. Motivation is extremely important during demanding learning process. The first objective of this study is focused on determining the correlations between factors of demotivation (DM) during learning English as a foreign language (LEFL) with factors of motivation (M), as well as with chosen relevant variables. The second objective is focused on determining the differences between factors of demotivation during LEFL in relation to the gender, the year of study and the programme of study. The study was conducted among the students enrolled in 3-year undergraduate study programmes at two University Departments: Maritime Department and Mass Communications Department. As the research instrument, the Questionnaire for Measuring Type and Intensity of Motivation of Croatian Students for Learning English as a Foreign Language by Mihaljevic Djigunovic1 was applied. The results indicate the absence of statistically significant differences in DM factors, according to the gender, the programme and the year of study. However, statistically significant, moderately high and negative association of pragmatic-communicative and affective factors of motivation with demotivation has been established, while the other correlations between DM and M are very low. On the other hand, statistically significant, negative and low correlation with DM factors has been found for the final grade only. The findings suggest the need for further research based on a context-specific approach to understanding demotivation in LEFL.

The “Wild League” is a recreational sports event, which takes place in Dubrovnik and has an extremely long tradition. The sport that is played in this competition is water polo. A study was conducted in order to identify motivational factors related to this amateur sport. The study had two main goals: to determine basic psychometric properties (construct validity and reliability) of the adjusted Questionnaire on sports events (QSE), as well as to determine the differences in motivational factors, according to several independent variables. A sample of 125 participants were examined in this study, using the QSE. All participants were Croatian citizens, and the study did not include those who are born (and currently live) in Dubrovnik. The results revealed three- component principal components’ structure, with reliable principal components that represent pushing motives, pulling motives and the limitations. Moreover, previous visiting Dubrovnik and the level of education did not appear as important independent variables to differentiate any sport tourists’ motives. Pushing motives are highly emphasized in males, participants who were actively engaged in sports, or those with Dubrovnik’s heritage. This clearly define some profile of tourist who may be attracted to visit the destination, motivated with “Wild League” event.

The main goal of the research is to determine the latent structure of the psychological questionnaires within Multidimensional Scale of Sports' Psychological Talents (MSSPT): Mental Energy Scale (MES), Modified Big Five Inventory (MBFI), Athletic Engagement Scale (AES) and Optimism Scale (OS). Second goal was to determine the correlation between the dimensions in all examined psychological characteristics in MSSPT, as well as with several relevant sport-related variables. The sample of 127 male handball players was examined, members of the teams Prvo plinarsko društvo, Metalac (Zagreb) and Zamet (Rijeka), in the beginning of 2015. In this study, four instruments from the battery MSSPT are used. The results show that 12 latent dimensions are revealed after the application of PCA, named: Openness/ Agreeableness/ Consciousness, Neuroticism/ Openness and Extraversion/ Agreeableness/ Consciousness (from MBFI), Enthusiasm/ Energy, Dedication and Self-esteem (from AES), Energy as motivator, Energy as strength during errors, Energy which lowing pressure and Energy as stable performance (from MES), Optimism/ Happiness and Energy (from OS). Almost all the dimensions in all the questionnaires showed satisfactory validity and reliability. Statistically significant correlations between the dimensions of MSSPT with relevant variables are very few (6 out of 72), mostly related with handball experience. The number of intercorrelations indicate that some of psychological characteristics within MSSPT are mostly positively but low correlated.

Perceived characteristics ,Police management ,Relationships - Abstract
The main objective of the research was to establish the relationship between certain perceived characteristics of police management and relevant characteristics of police officers (potentially related to these perceptions). Specifically, we have determined the correlation between police officer’s age and work experience and perceived level of the development of the individual characteristics (together with the estimated importance of these characteristics) of police managers (knowledge/skills), as well as with perceived organisational and legal characteristics of the police system (the principles of the appointment and dismissal of police managers). Moreover, we have determined the gender differences in perception of abovementioned characteristics of the police management, as well as differences according to the category of police department where police officers are working. The sample examined in this study comprised 132 police officers, who are currently attending the study programme of Criminal Investigation at the Police College in Zagreb, Croatia. This study revealed that social skills (as the component of the principles of the appointment and dismissal of police managers) are the only dependent variable that distinguish the perception of according to independent variable police department (in the second category of the police department, the highest mean is revealed, while the lowest mean is found in the fourth category). No gender differences are found. Neither age nor experience have statistically significant correlations, nor with the characteristics associated with knowledge / skills of police managers, nor with the principles of the appointment and dismissal of police managers.

This study aimed to investigate relevant factors about engagement of women in certain sports, with a purpose to retain women in sports in general. Final goal was to determine the differences in revealed latent dimensions of these relevant factors, in relation to medals won on state and international championships and sport activity status. The correlations between the dimensions of these relevant factors with number of children, work experience, age and period spent in sport are found. A total of 342 female athletes from several sports (judo, badminton, gymnastics bowling, acrobatic rock’n roll, handball, sport fishing, Association of the deaf athletes, archery, chess and basketball) were examined by specially composed the survey. The results showed that the only difference between more successful and less successful female athletes is found in environmental barriers, where higher scores have those who achieved medals on state championships. Only difference between still active and non-active athletes is found in obligation barriers (higher results for retired athletes). Small number of statistically significant differences and correlations can be explained in terms that all women athletes share similar problems.

Introduction: Routine medical examinations are important in determining not only the current health status of athletes, but also potential different responses of males and females to certain athletic activities and gender-related health status differences. The main goal of this study was to determine the differences between athletes who are actively engaged in team vs. individual sports, stratified by age groups and gender, in BMI and other chosen biochemical health indicators. Methods: The data were collected during routine medical examinations in 2011 and 2012 from 8482 athletes in Zagreb, Croatia. Collected data included height, weight, BMI, blood pressure (diastolic and systolic), pulse rate, hemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocyte, thrombocyte, and sedimentation. Results: A number of statistically significant differences in BMI and chosen biochemical indicators have been revealed in femaleathletes (stratified by age groups) between individual and team sports. On the contrary, a minimal number of statistically significant differences in these variables related to the sport type have been detected in male athletes. Moreover, these differences indicate health status in male and female athletes across different age groups. Conclusions: Possible explanations for such results could be the specific features of different sport types, different gender-related motivation for choosing a sport type or greater general importance of physical activity for males, which is then also reflected in their health status. BMI and other chosen health indicators collected during routine medical examinations, according to a sport type, could be a useful proxy for detecting gender and age- related differences in athletes’ health status.

The motivation is considered as a continuum between positive (and personal) attitudes about sport and negative (environmental) motives, as well as between fun (relaxation) motives, through social motives, to ambition (self- esteem) motivation. Our general assumption is that in athletes who won state and international medals, or who are currently still athletes competitors, positive (and personal) attitudes about sport and ambition (self-esteem) motivation should be dominant. Main goals of the research are: to determine the differences between female athletes in their sport motivation according to achieving medals on state/international championships and activity status (retired/still competitor) (1) ; to determine the correlations between sport motives and their age, work experience, number of children and experience in certain sport (2). The average age of the surveyed female sport practitioners (in total N=342) was 31.53±13.92 вears (M±SD). The results do not support the hypothesis about the continuum of sport motives. Regardless of whether an athlete is still competitor or more successful on state and international championships or not, she has similar combination of motivations. Only differences between more successful and less successful female athletes is found in fun /relaxation motivation and ambition/ self- esteem motivation, where higher scores have those who achieved medals on state championships. Among sport motives, highest (positive) correlations are found between social motivation, relaxation motivation and ambition/ self-esteem motivation, what is additional evidence about mixing of motivations in the female athletes. The correlations with socio-demographic variables are very low.

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in performance indicators for top senior male basketball players, with respect to several independent variables: position in the team, total situation-related efficiency, age, playing experience and the time spent on the court within the game and during championship season. The final sample of participants was selected from all teams in A-1 Croatian men’s basketball league. Significant differences have been found according to the players’: position in the team, total situation-related efficiency, and in interactions of the position in the team / total situation-related efficiency and minutes spent on the court in a game / playing experience. The differences in the situation-related efficiency between players have not been found according to the players’ age and the number of games played. Further research can be directed towards deeper analysis of the influence of more complex differentiated variables playing experience and time spent on the court in a game on situation- related efficiency in basketball.

Popular question about the existence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) could be considered in terms of its differential diagnostics. As a syndrome, MetS is defined as pattern or set of risk factors, which raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems. However, MetS could be observed as a distinctive set of symptoms, which is characteristic for certain population. The main aim of this study is to compare the factor structures of risk factors (included in diagnostic criteria for MetS) in male and female inhabitants of two different regions of Croatia, stratified in those with MetS (satisfying three criteria for MetS) and healthy individuals. A total of 582 adult participants (88 male and 188 female healthy, 132 male and 174 female sick inhabitants on the island Hvar) and in total 413 (98 male and 245 female healthy, 29 male and 41 female sick inhabitants in the region Baranja), aged 18+. The variables which define the symptoms of MetS are analyzed, using exploratory strategy of PCA, according to criteria: Hvar/Baranja ; male/female and healthy/sick participants. The similarities and/or differences in factor structures among healthy and sick males/females in both locations and healthy/sick males and females in the same locations, reflect the differences in distinctive profiles of MetS in certain populations, defined by intersections of the belonging to certain region, sex and health status (MetS presence or absence). Therefore, improved interdisciplinary anthropological approach is an obligation, emphasizing the need for continuous (re)defining the MetS in certain population, especially from the historical perspective.

Numerous psychological instruments are developed with a purpose assess psychological characteristics of athletes. In this study, recently preliminary validated battery of questionnaires, named Multidimensional Inventory of Sport Excellence (MUSI) is applied. From entire MUSI, several subscales are applied, measuring following psychological characteristics: mental energy, cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, attention focusing, awareness about attention, wide internal/ external attention, awareness about attention during performance, internal speech and narrow external focus. The main goals of the study are: to determine the differences between top female handball and volleyball players in abovementioned psychological characteristics (1) ; to determine the correlations between these psychological characteristics, separately for handball and volleyball players (2). Sample of 91 female athletes, 35 handball and 56 volleyball players (mean age for handball 16.49±3.71 and 14.04±2.74 for volleyball) were included in the study. They are recruited from sport clubs in Rijeka: “Rijeka” (volleyball) and “Zamet” (handball). Data were collected from March to June 2014 in Rijeka, during the trainings in sports clubs. The results revealed that only one statistically significant difference is found between female handball and volleyball players in the aspects of MUSI (in somatic anxiety, higher means female handball players had higher means than volleyball players did). Approximately half of the correlations between different psychological characteristics were low to moderate statistically significant (and mostly positively) correlated, with just a bit more significant correlations found in volleyball players. The results provide the information mostly about the similarities in examined psychological characteristics in these two sports, as well as the similar profiles in the relationships between these characteristics.

The main goal of the study was to determine gender differences in validity scales of personality measuring instruments, among the psychiatric patients. Additional goals are to fi nd the differences among male and female psychiatric patients, in relation to their age group, education level and type of psychiatric diagnosis. A total of 331 male and 331 female participants (psychiatric patients) are examined, classifi ed by the categories of diagnosis, as following: Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders (F20-F29), Mood (affective) disorders (F30-F39) ; Neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders neurotic, (F40-F48) and Disorders of adult personality and behavior (F60-F69). Four control scales are applied: Lie Scale (MMPIL or L scale), Scale of bizarre and confusing thinking (MMPIF or F scale) K scale of Defensiveness (MMPIK), together with Bias-scale in Plutchik’s Emotion Profi le Index (EPI). Three-factorial MANOVA was used in the analysis of the main effects, while non-parametric tests in the analysis of differences for each independent variable. Results reflect characteristic statistically significant gender differences in validity scales of personality measuring instruments, in most of the independent variables (the main effects are found for the level of education and age group). These results were interpreted within the theoretical framework of simulation and dissimulation.

Sports psychologist needs to understand how psychological factors affect the performance of an individual, and must take account of individual differences among athletes. Although there are numerous psychological measurement instruments for assessing the important psychological characteristics of the athletes, it is important to select instruments to customize athletes with whom we work, adjusting with the work style of sports psychologists, as well as to available time and other constraints. The aim of this study is to determine the basic psychometric characteristics of three questionnaires, made out in the preliminary version of its own battery of questionnaires, called Multidimensional questionnaire of sporting excellence (MUSI). Items cover space of following psychological characteristics: somatic and cognitive anxiety and mental hardiness / toughness. In this part of the study, participants were stratified only by gender. Our sample included 248 participants, of which 103 athletes (age 24.52 ± 11.80 years) and 145 female athletes (age 16.61 ± 6.69 years), in the Croatian sports clubs, competing in 16 different sports (archery, football, handball, bocce, bowling, cycling, karate, rowing, tennis, volleyball, basketball, synchronized swimming, triathlon, table tennis, chess, badminton). Results of factor analysis and examination of reliability of internal consistency showed that each of subscales in the battery MUSI has satisfactory reliability and validity, giving positive guidance for future adaptation of the questionnaires in MUSI for specific subpopulations of the athletes.

The focus of this article is the part of a holistic anthropological interdisciplinary study of the population structure of the inhabitants of the Island of Rab, focused on multivariate analyses of latent morphological variables, to contribute to the explanation of its microevolution. The goals of the study were directed to determine population differences in a geographically limited area of Rab, based on the latent morphological variables of the head and body. A representative sample of 601 adult persons (aged 18–75 years) from the settlements of Banjol, Barbat, Lopar, Rab and Supetarska Draga was examined. The analysis included 30 anthropometric variables of the body, as well as 14 anthropometric variables of the head. Principal Component Analysis with Varimax rotation revealed five latent variables of the body and five latent variables of the head (in both sexes), while quasi-confirmatory factor analysis proved that there are no significant differences in component structures among men and women. Analysing the latent morphological variables enabled the clear insight that the examined population is heterogeneous, in the space of the investigated body and head variables for both sexes in certain sets of variables.

The aim of this study is to determine the basic psychometric characteristics of three questionnaires, made out in the preliminary version of its own battery of questionnaires, called Multidimensional questionnaire sporting excellence (MUSI).

Swimming and synchronized swimming are two similar sports, different in required patterns of movements, but with similar predispositions in important motor abilities, functional capacities and morphology. First goal in this study is to determine the differences between female girls in two age groups, actively engaged in classic and synchronized swimming in chosen health and morphological parameters, as well se to forecast body mass index (BMI) in overall sample of active athletes with same parameters as the predictors. The data are collected from routine medical examinations of the athletes in the Polyclinic for Occupational Health and Sport in Zagreb, including sample of female athletes: swimmers (N=46) and synchronized swimmers (N=15), in two age groups: 7-13 years and 13-15 years. The results showed that the differences between swimmers and synchronized swimmers are not found, except in the age group 7-13 years, where diastolic blood pressure and hematocrits showed higher mean values in synchronized swimmers, as compared to the swimmers. BMI could be successfully predicted on the base of only one statistically significant predictor (hemoglobin). Results offer the guidelines for improving the training process for both sports.

Specific associations among perceived stress and hardiness can reflect the characteristics of workers in particular professions. The goals of this research were to analyze sets of correlations between the aspects of hardiness and experienced stress, separately for two subsamples of subjects in the research, and on the entire sample. Then, the goal was to determine the correlations among the aspects of stress and hardiness, with three variables: age, work experience and number of children. A correlative study was conducted in Croatia on two samples: 75 nursing and 63 criminology students, using Stress-test (ST) and Short Hardiness Scale (SHS). The results showed low and negative correlations among two aspects of hardiness and the dimensions of stress. Aspects of hardiness was not correlated with the dimension of diet and sleep difficulties. There are no statistical significant correlations between age, work experience and number of children with stress. The aspect of control becomes lower emphasized with age, mainly at nurses

Adjusting instruments for estimating children’s development to certain culture can be translated in an attempt to find representative sets of indicators in certain developmental aspects. Developmental milestone is a skill acquired within certain time framework: they are sets of functional skills, or specific tasks that the majority of the children of the certain age can successfully complete. In this research, we have aim to find basic developmental milestones in children’s motor development at six age groups of preschool children (boys and girls), included in kindergartens in Croatia: aged 1 to 2 (173), aged 2 to 3 (208), aged 3 to 4 (256), aged 3 to 4 (284), aged 5 to 6 (257), aged 6 to 7 (298). Number of analysed developmental milestones that initially represented sets of motor functional characteristics varied in range from 31 to 54, depending of age group. In data analysis, Principal Component Analysis is used, with Varimax rotation, to obtain latent dimensions of the basic developmental milestones for motor development, for boys at girls separately in certain age group. Future extensions of this approach go in direction of finding the most appropriate activities for children, aimed for stimulating belonging basic milestones, in motor and other developmental aspects. Direct associating milestones and activities the most convenient for their stimulating through ICT software, can provide user-friendly tool, which can be easily used by children’s parents and teachers.
