The PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA) concept aims to perform mapping with spectral coverage and sensitivities inaccessible to previous FIR space telescopes. PRIMA's imaging instrument, PRIMAger, provides unique hyperspectral imaging simultaneously covering 25–235 µm. We synthesize images representing a deep, 1500 h deg
−2 PRIMAger survey, with realistic instrumental and confusion noise. We demonstrate that we can construct catalogues of galaxies with a high purity (>95 per cent) at a source density of 42 k deg−2 using PRIMAger data alone. Using the XID+ deblending tool, we show that we measure fluxes with an accuracy better than 20 per cent to flux levels of 0.16, 0.80, 9.7, and 15 mJy at 47.4, 79.7, 172, and 235 µm, respectively. These are a factor of ∼2 and ∼3 fainter than the classical confusion limits for 72–96 and 126–235 µm, respectively. At |$1.5 \le z \le 2$| , we detect and accurately measure fluxes in 8–10 of the 10 channels covering 47–235 µm for sources with |$2 \lesssim \log ({\rm SFR}) \lesssim 2.5$| , a 0.5 dex improvement on what might be expected from the classical confusion limit. Recognizing that PRIMager will operate in a context where high-quality data will be available at other wavelengths, we investigate the benefits of introducing additional prior information. We show that by introducing even weak prior flux information when employing a higher source density catalogue (more than one source per beam), we can obtain accurate fluxes an order of magnitude below the classical confusion limit for 96–235 µm. We introduce a novel model to spectroscopically constrain the mid-infrared (MIR) extinction/attenuation curve from 3–17 μ m, using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission drawn from an AKARI–Spitzer extragalactic cross-archival data set. Currently proposed MIR extinction curves vary significantly in their slopes toward the near-infrared, and the variation in the strengths and shapes of the 9.7 μ m and 18 μ m silicate absorption features make MIR spectral modeling and interpretation challenging, particularly for heavily obscured galaxies. By adopting the basic premise that PAH bands have relatively consistent intrinsic ratios within dusty starbursting galaxies, we can, for the first time, empirically determine the overall shape of the MIR attenuation curve by measuring the differential attenuation at specific PAH wavelengths. Our attenuation model shows PAH emission in most (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies is unambiguously subjected to attenuation, and we find strong evidence that PAH bands undergo differential attenuation as obscuration increases. Compared to preexisting results, the MIR attenuation curve derived from the model favors relatively gray continuum absorption from 3–8 μ m and silicate features with intermediate strength at 9.7 μ m but with stronger than typical 18 μ m opacity. Astrophysics of Galaxies (astro-ph.GA) ,FOS: Physical sciences ,Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We present a new methodology for simulating mid-infrared emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in galaxy evolution simulations. To do this, we combine theoretical models of PAH emission features as they respond to varying interstellar radiation fields, grain size distributions, and ionization states with a new on-the-fly model for dust evolution in hydrodynamic galaxy simulations. We apply these models to 3 idealized arepo galaxy evolution simulations within the smuggle physics framework. We use these simulations to develop numerical experiments investigating the buildup of PAH masses and luminosities in galaxies in idealized analogs of the Milky Way, a dwarf galaxy, and starburst disk. Our main results follow. Galaxies with high specific star formation rates have increased feedback energy per unit mass, and are able to efficiently shatter dust grains, driving up the fraction of ultra small grains. At the same time, in our model large radiation fields per unit gas density convert aliphatic grains into aromatics. The fraction of dust grains in the form of PAHs (q_PAH) can be understood as a consequence of these processes, and in our model PAHs form primarily from interstellar processing (shattering) of larger grains rather than from the growth of smaller grains. We find that the hardness of the radiation field plays a larger role than variations in the grain size distribution in setting the total integrated PAH luminosities, though cosmological simulations are necessary to fully investigate the complex interplay of processes that drive PAH band luminosities in galaxies. Finally, we highlight feature PAH strength variations, cautioning against the usage of emission templates with constant feature strength ratios., Submitted to ApJ; comments welcome

Quantum quasigroups and quantum loops are self-dual objects providing a general framework for the nonassociative extension of quantum group techniques. This paper examines their one-sided analogues, which are not self-dual. Just as quantum quasigroups are the “quantum” version of quasigroups, so one-sided quantum quasigroups are the “quantum” version of left or right quasigroups.

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of highenergy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data are provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above ∼50 EeV are provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for pointsource searches to search for excesses of neutrino clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses have found a significant excess, and previously reported overfluctuations are reduced in significance. Based on these results, we further constrain the neutrino flux spatially correlated with UHECRs., Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), Commission Européenne (FEDER fund and Marie Curie Program), Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), LabEx UnivEarthS (ANR-10- LABX-0023 and ANR-18-IDEX-0001), Région Île-de-France (DIM-ACAV), Région Alsace (contrat CPER), Région Provence- Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Département du Var and Ville de La Seyne-sur-Mer, France, Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), Germany, Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Italy, Nederlandse organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), the Netherlands, Council of the President of the Russian Federation for young scientists and leading scientific schools supporting grants, Russia, Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation (UEFISCDI), Romania, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación, Investigación y Universidades (MCIU): Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento (refs. With the start of JWST observations, mid-infrared (MIR) emission features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), H
2 rotational lines, fine structure lines from ions, and dust continuum will be widely available tracers of gas and star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies at various redshifts. Many of these tracers originate from dust and gas illuminated by UV photons from massive stars, so they generally trace both SFR and gas to varying degrees. We investigate how MIR spectral features from 5–35 μ m and photometry from 3.4–250 μ m correlate with SFR and molecular gas. In general, we find MIR emission features (i.e., PAHs and H2 rotational lines) trace both CO and SFR better than CO and SFR trace one another. H2 lines and PAH features correlate best with CO. Fine structure lines from ions correlate best with SFR. The [S iii ] lines at 18.7 and 33.5 μ m, in particular, have a very tight correlation with SFR, and we use them to calibrate new single-parameter MIR tracers of SFR that have negligible metallicity dependence in our sample. The 17 μ m/7.7 μ m PAH feature ratio increases as a function of CO emission which may be evidence of PAH growth or neutralization in molecular gas. The degree to which dust continuum emission traces SFR or CO varies as a function of wavelength, with continuum between 20 and 70 μ m better tracing SFR, while longer wavelengths better trace CO. The measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is of crucial importance to clarify their origin and acceleration mechanisms. The Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina and the Telescope Array (TA) in the US have reported their measurements of UHECR energy spectra observed in the southern and northern hemisphere, respectively. The region of the sky accessible to both Observatories ([−15,+24] degrees in declination) can be used to cross-calibrate the two spectra. The Auger-TA energy spectrum working group was organized in 2012 and has been working to understand the uncertainties in energy scale in both experiments, their systematic differences, and differences in the shape of the spectra. In previous works, we reported that there was an overall agreement of the energy spectra measured by the two observatories below 10 EeV while at higher energies, a remaining significant difference was observed in the common declination band. We revisit this issue to understand its origin by examining the systematic uncertainties, statistical effects, and other possibilities. We will also discuss the differences in the spectra in different declination bands and a new feature in the spectrum recently reported by the Auger Collaboration.

The sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are still unknown, but assuming standard physics, they are expected to lie within a few hundred megaparsecs from us. Indeed, over cosmological distances cosmic rays lose energy to interactions with background photons, at a rate depending on their mass number and energy and properties of photonuclear interactions and photon backgrounds. The universe is not homogeneous at such scales, hence the distribution of the arrival directions of cosmic rays is expected to reflect the inhomogeneities in the distribution of galaxies; the shorter the energy loss lengths, the stronger the expected anisotropies. Galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields can blur and distort the picture, but the magnitudes of the largest-scale anisotropies, namely the dipole and quadrupole moments, are the most robust to their effects. Measuring them with no bias regardless of any higher-order multipoles is not possible except with full-sky coverage. In this work, we achieve this in three energy ranges (approximately 8--16 EeV, 16--32 EeV, and 32--$\infty$ EeV) by combining surface-detector data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory until 2020 and at the Telescope Array (TA) until 2019, before the completion of the upgrades of the arrays with new scintillator detectors. We find that the full-sky coverage achieved by combining Auger and TA data reduces the uncertainties on the north-south components of the dipole and quadrupole in half compared to Auger-only results., Comment: proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021), 12-23 July 2021, Berlin, Germany

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena (astro-ph.HE) ,FOS: Physical sciences ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The Telescope Array Collaboration has observed an excess of events with $E \ge 10^{19.4} ~{\rm eV}$ in the data which is centered at (RA, dec) = ($19^\circ$, $35^\circ$). This is near the center of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (PPSC). The PPSC is about $70 ~{\rm Mpc}$ distant and is the closest supercluster in the Northern Hemisphere (other than the Virgo supercluster of which we are a part). A Li-Ma oversampling analysis with $20^\circ$-radius circles indicates an excess in the arrival direction of events with a local significance of about 4 standard deviations. The probability of having such excess close to the PPSC by chance is estimated to be 3.5 standard deviations. This result indicates that a cosmic ray source likely exists in that supercluster., 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Lunar And Planetary Science And Exploration - Abstract
The first steps for In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) on target bodies such as the Moon, Mars and Near Earth Asteroids (NEA), and even comets, involve the same sequence of steps as in the terrestrial mining of resources. First exploration including prospecting must occur, and then the resource must be acquired through excavation methods if it is of value. Subsequently a load, haul and dump sequence of events occurs, followed by processing of the resource in an ISRU plant, to produce useful commodities. While these technologies and related supporting operations are mature in terrestrial applications, they will be different in space since the environment and indigenous materials are different than on Earth. In addition, the equipment must be highly automated, since for the majority of the production cycle time, there will be no humans present to assist or intervene. This space mining equipment must withstand a harsh environment which includes vacuum, radical temperature swing cycles, highly abrasive lofted dust, electrostatic effects, van der Waals forces effects, galactic cosmic radiation, solar particle events, high thermal gradients when spanning sunlight terminators, steep slopes into craters / lava tubes and cryogenic temperatures as low as 40 K in permanently shadowed regions. In addition the equipment must be tele-operated from Earth or a local base where the crew is sheltered. If the tele-operation occurs from Earth then significant communications latency effects mandate the use of autonomous control systems in the mining equipment. While this is an extremely challenging engineering design scenario, it is also an opportunity, since the technologies developed in this endeavor could be used in the next generations of terrestrial mining equipment, in order to mine deeper, safer, more economical and with a higher degree of flexibility. New space technologies could precipitate new mining solutions here on Earth. The NASA KSC Swamp Works is an innovation environment and methodology, with associated laboratories that uses lean development methods and creativity-enhancing processes to invent and develop new solutions for space exploration. This paper will discuss the Swamp Works approach to developing space mining and resource extraction systems and the vision of space development it serves. The ultimate goal of the Swamp Works is to expand human civilization into the solar system via the use of local resources utilization. By mining and using the local resources in situ, it is conceivable that one day the logistics supply train from Earth can be eliminated and Earth independence of a space-based community will be enabled.

NASA's Great Observatories have opened up the electromagnetic spectrum from space, providing sustained access to wavelengths not accessible from the ground. Together, Hubble, Compton, Chandra, and Spitzer have provided the scientific community with an agile and powerful suite of telescopes with which to attack broad scientific questions, and react to a rapidly changing scientific landscape. As the existing Great Observatories age, or are decommissioned, community access to these wavelengths will diminish, with an accompanying loss of scientific capability. This report, commissioned by the NASA Cosmic Origins, Physics of the Cosmos and Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Groups (PAGs), analyzes the importance of multi-wavelength observations from space during the epoch of the Great Observatories, providing examples that span a broad range of astrophysical investigations., A report by the Great Observatories Science Analysis Group (SAG-10), commissioned by NASA's Cosmic Origins, Physics of the Cosmos, and Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Groups. 87 pages, 23 figures
