1. First record and molecular diversity of haemosporidian parasites in Sula leucogaster (Boddaert, 1783) from the southeastern Brazilian coast.

Abstract

Avian haemosporidian parasites are protozoans transmitted by vectors, belonging to the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Leucocytozoon, capable of infecting various bird species. The prevalence of these parasites varies depending on factors such as the habitat and geographical location of the host and vector, as well as across different bird groups. Seabirds typically exhibit low infection rates due to the absence of vectors in marine environments. This study aimed to identify and characterize the molecular diversity of Haemosporida parasites in a population of Brown Boobies (Sula leucogaster) (n = 37) from the Santana Archipelago in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro state. We utilized PCR-based detection methods to confirm the presence of haemosporidian parasites and sequencing (ctyb gene) to delineate the lineages. The results uncovered a notable prevalence (48.6%) of haemosporidian parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus), comprising 12 novel lineages and four previously documented lineages (establishing new host records). Our findings suggest that transmission and infection by these hemoparasites can occur both on and off the island. Overall, this study yields valuable insights into the genetic diversity of haemosporidian parasites in Brown Boobies, enriching our understanding of the ecology and epidemiology of these parasites in seabirds. Abstract

Dispersal patterns of zoonotic pathogens can be strongly influenced by mobility and contact among hosts. Toxoplasma gondii infection has been documented in many avian species, however, there is little information regarding free-living seabird populations. Leptospira can infect domestic and wild animals, with birds being potential carriers of the bacteria. The continental shelf of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean is a foraging area for seabirds that breed locally, as well as migratory seabirds wintering in the area, which may come into contact with each other in prey aggregation areas and contribute to T. gondii and Leptospira spread. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of two important zoonotic pathogens in free-living seabirds. Blood samples were collected from 322 birds of three local breeders (Phaethon aethereus, Sula leucogaster and S. dactylatra) in the eastern coast of Brazil (Abrolhos Archipelago), and two migratory species using the area during the pre-laying (Pterodroma arminjoniana) and the non-breeding periods (Thalassarche chlororhynchos). Serological agglutination tests for detection of anti-Toxoplasma gondii and anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies were performed. None of the seabirds in this study was seroreactive to Leptospira spp., whereas 34.5% (n = 111) of the animals presented antibodies anti-T. gondii. Antibody titers in seropositive birds ranged from 10 to 640. There were seropositive birds in all sampled localities. This study provides the first records for P. arminjoniana and T. chlororhynchos as seropositive to T. gondii, suggesting their potential role as sentinels for the environmental contamination by T. gondii and also T. gondii infection. These findings indicate the circulation of the parasite in the Brazilian coastal and oceanic regions, probably due to the ingestion of T. gondii oocysts by birds, the epidemiological involvement of migratory birds as hosts of pathogens, as well as the role of the historical introduction of invasive vertebrates on Brazilian islands. Therefore, due to the serological evidence of infection, the dynamics of toxoplasmosis in seabirds, regarding their susceptibility towards the disease and the possible anthropogenic influence need to be better understood for the colonies to be included in the wildlife cycle of T. gondii. Abstract

We have conducted the first study of trematodes in wetland birds of the Samara region (European Russia). A total of 25 trematode species from 12 families were identified in 8 species of birds. Eight digenean species (Echinochasmus beleocephalus, Petasiger radiatus, P. exaeretus, Metorchis xanthosomus, Uroproctepisthmium bursicola, Leyogonimus polyoon, Hysteromorpha triloba, Cyathocotyle prussica) were registered for the first time in birds of the Middle Volga region. The first data on helminths in Ardea cinerea, Fulica atra, Phalacrocorax carbo, Larus cachinnans and Cygnus olor inhabiting this territory were obtained. Fifteen species of trematodes we found have veterinary significance as causative agents of dangerous helminthiases.

Abstract

Surveys of seabirds breeding along the coast of Sør-Varanger, NE Norway were carried out in 1989, 1996, 1999 and 2002 as a continuation of a monitoring study started in 1970. Until 1983, by which time 47 colonies were occupied, there had been a rapid increase in numbers of Black-legged Kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla and European Shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis breeding in the area while the Great Cormorant P. carbo population had first increased and then declined. Between 1983 and 2002, the Kittiwake and Shag populations declined by ca. 60% and 85% respectively while that of Cormorants first continued to decline and then recovered to levels recorded in the 1970s. The decline in Common Guillemot Uria aalge and Razorbill Alca torda numbers recorded since 1970 culminated in 1989 when no birds were seen in the region. Since then, one individual Common Guillemot was seen in 1999. In 2002 approximately 7500 pairs of Kittiwake, 770 pairs of Cormorant and 15 pairs of Shag bred in 23 colonies. Possible causes for the main population changes are briefly discussed.

Abstract

A black skimmer (Rynchops niger) and a brown booby (Sula leucogaster) were rescued and gross, histopathological, immunohistochemical and polymerase chain reaction evaluations were conducted to investigate the cause of death. There were neoplastic infiltrations of CD3+ PAX5- lymphocytes in the black skimmer and CD3- PAX5+ lymphocytes in the brown booby. Molecular assays for viral agents were negative in both cases. Abstract

Complete blood counts (n=566) and serum biochemistry (n=426) were assessed in seven coastal seabirds species that underwent rehabilitation along the southeastern and southern coast of Brazil from Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro State (22°56′16.44″S, 42°18′24.16″W) to Laguna, Santa Catarina State (28°29′43″S, 48°45′39.2″W), from August 2016 to August 2020. Blood samples were collected from four species of Charadriiformes, including Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus, n=136), South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea, n=25), Cabot's Tern (Thalasseus acuflavidus, n=17), and Common Tern (Sterna hirundo, n=14) as well as three species of Suliformes, the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster, n=212), Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens, n=104), and Neotropic Cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum, n=58). The individuals were sampled as part of the protocol required before their release into the wild when considered healthy. This work aimed to establish the normal hematologic and biochemical reference values of those seabird species and, when possible, to analyze variations among age class and sex and to compare those with the available data in the literature. In addition, we provide the first baseline data for the South American Tern, Cabot's Tern, and Neotropic Cormorant. Baseline hematologic data are crucial for assessing health status of individuals and to support management and conservation actions, including release of seabirds into the wild. Abstract The genus Baruscapillaria Moravec, 1982 has six valid species recorded in birds Phalacrocoracidae, namely Baruscapillaria appendiculata Freitas, 1933, B. spiculata Freitas, 1933, B. carbonis (Dubinin & Dubinina, 1940), B. jaenschi (Johnston & Mawson, 1945), B. phalacrocoraxi (Borgarenko, 1975) and B. rudolphii Moravec, Scholz and Našincová, 1994. Helminthological tests carried out on cormorants of the species Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin), a migratory bird that occurs in the northeast of the State of Pará, Brazil, demonstrate B. appendiculata parasitizing the cloaca of these birds, through light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and molecular biology. These studies allowed a redescription of males and females of this nematode in these hosts and in this geographical area through integrative taxonomy. The occurrence of lesions in the cloaca caused by this nematode parasite was registered using histological analysis. This is a new geographic report for this nematode.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria pose a serious global health risk for humans and animals, while the role of wildlife in the dynamic transmission processes of antimicrobial resistance in environmental settings is still unclear. This study determines the occurrence of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli in the free-living great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) of the North and Baltic Sea coasts of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. For this, resistant E.coli were isolated from cloacal or faecal swabs and their antimicrobial resistance pheno- and genotypes were investigated using disk diffusion tests and PCR assays. The isolates were further assigned to the four major phylogenetic groups, and their affiliation to avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) was tested. Resistant E. coli were isolated from 66.7% of the 33 samples, and 48.9% of all the resistant isolates showed a multidrug resistance profile. No spatial differences were seen between the different sampling locations with regard to the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance or multidrug resistance. Most commonly, resistance percentages occurred against streptomycin, followed by tetracycline and sulfonamides. More than half of the isolates belonged to the phylogenetic group B1. Of all the isolates, 24.4% were classified as APEC isolates, of which almost 82% were identified as multidrug-resistant. These results add information on the dispersal of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in wild birds in Germany, thereby allowing conclusions on the degree of environmental contamination and potential public health concerns. Abstract

The brown booby (Sula leucogaster Boddaert, 1783) has a wide geographic distribution, being found throughout the intertropical range except for the west coast of South America. Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera and Ischnocera) are ectoparasites commonly found in association with a wide variety of bird species, and extensive infestations can lead to severe itching and irritation that causes skin lesions, damage to the plumage, and abandonment of nests. Sula leucogaster lice have an atypical distribution, not fully following the distribution of their host. In the years 2018 and 2019, 4 marine animal rehabilitation centers located in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil received live birds and carcasses of Sula leucogaster. The animals were deloused and lice of 2 different species were collected. Identification was performed by optical microscopy, and the species found were Eidmanniella albescens Piaget, 1880 and Pectinopygus garbeiPessoa and Guimarães, 1935. Exames helmintológicos realizados em mergulhões da espécie Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin), aves migratórias que ocorrem no nordeste do Estado do Pará, Brasil, demonstram B. appendiculata parasitando a cloaca dessas aves, através de microscopia de luz, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e biologia molecular. Estes estudos permitiram uma redescrição de machos e fêmeas deste nematódeo, neste hospedeiro e nesta área geográfica, através da taxonomia integrativa. Foi registrada a ocorrência de lesões na cloaca causadas pelo parasitismo desse nematódeo, por meio de análise histológica, sendo um novo registro geográfico elw.

Abstract

During the Neogene of South America, Anhingidae was represented by several species, mainly with greater sizes than the extant members. In the present contribution, body mass and locomotor habits ofAnhinga minuta, the smallest known darter, were inferred. Body mass was estimated using two methods, one with measures of a tibiotarsus (the holotype) and the other, with measurements of a humerus; locomotor habits were inferred through muscular reconstructions and wing parameters (wing span, wing area and wing loading). Estimates of wing span and wing area were based on the length of humerus, assuming a condition of isometry with respect toAnhinga anhinga; wing loading was obtained through a relation formula between wing area and body mass. The results obtained indicate a body mass of about 729 g, a wing span of 0.958 m, a wing area of 0.117 m2and a corresponding wing loading of 61 N/m2. These values and also the proximal insertion of the musculus pectoralis are consistent with those of a soaring bird but with more frequent flapping than extant anhingids. Furthermore, the inferred musculature for tibiotarsus indicates abilities for swimming, climbing and moving through the vegetation as in extant representatives. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

15. Pelagic and estuarine birds as sentinels of metal(loid)s in the South Atlantic Ocean: Ecological niches as main factors acting on bioaccumulation.

Abstract

Activities related to the offshore exploration and production of oil and natural gas provide economic development and an essential energy source. However, besides the risk of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, these activities can also be sources of metals and metalloids for marine organism contamination. In this research, we evaluated the potential use of two pelagic (black-browed albatross Thalassarche melanophris and yellow-nosed albatross T. chlororhynchos) and one estuarine bird species (neotropical cormorant Nannopterum brasilianus) as sentinels of contamination of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Mn, Mo, Zn, Ni, Ba, V, and Hg in an area under influence of oil and gas activities. The analyses were carried out in samples collected from 2015 to 2022 from 97 individuals. A factor alert; an adaptation from the contamination factor is proposed to identify individuals with high concentrations that possibly suffered contamination by anthropogenic origin. Grouping all species, the metal(loid)s with the highest concentrations were in decreasing order: Zn > Cu > Mn > Hg > As > Cd > Mo > V > Cr > Ba > Ni > Pb. Similar concentrations were observed for V, Mn, Cr and Pb among the three species. Pelagic birds showed higher levels of concentrations for Hg, As and Cd. Based on the correlations and multivariate analysis performed, the results indicate that the ecological niche factor has greater relevance in the bioaccumulation of these elements compared to the habitat. Although some individuals showed high concentrations in part of the trace elements, suggesting exposure to anthropic sources, the direct influence of oil production and exploration activities was not observed, suggesting that activities on the continent are the primary contamination source. The results of this work highlight the role of seabirds as sentinels for metal(loid)s, contributing to the knowledge of the occurrence of contaminants in the South Atlantic Ocean. Abstract

Capturing breeding adults of colonially nesting species can entail risks of nest failure and even colony abandonment, especially in species that react strongly to human disturbance. A low-disturbance technique for capturing specific adult Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) at a ground-nesting colony was developed to reduce these risks and is described here. Nesting habitat enhancement was used to attract Doublecrested Cormorants to nest adjacent to above-ground tunnels constructed so that researchers could capture birds by hand. Using this technique, Double-crested Cormorants (n = 87) were captured during the incubation and chick-rearing stages of the nesting cycle. Unlike alternative capture techniques, this approach allowed targeting of specific individuals for capture and recapture, minimized local disturbance, and eliminated colony-wide disturbances. The tunnel-based system presented here could be adapted to capture adults or to access the nest contents of otlier ground-nesting colonial species that are inclined to nest in areas of enhanced nesting habitat and adapt to anthropogenic structures in their nesting area. Abstract

Objectives Little studies had been done on chewing lice of marine birds in the Middle East. Through this work, parasitic chewing lice of Brown Booby Sula leucogaster (Boddaert) in the Red Sea were recorded for the first time from Egypt. Methods One brown booby was examined for chewing lice in Giftun Island, Hurghada. A total of 27 specimens of lice were collected from this bird and phylogenetic analysis of species of genus Pectinopygus associated boobies has been done based on NCBI data. Results and conclusions Two species of marine chewing lice were identified: Eidmanniella albescens (Piaget, 1880) and Pectinopygus sulae (Rudow, 1869) ; diagnostic remarks for the two identified species, measurements, and material examined were provided through the manuscript. The final phylogenetic tree indicates the monophyletic origin of Pectinopygus spp. associated with boobies and their paraphyletic relation to other species of Pectinopygus that associated with other Suliformes. Also, independence of boobies’ speciation from chewing louse of genus Pectinopygus speciation. The present work forms a small step in a long way of studying marine chewing lice of Egypt and a better understanding of marine birds/chewing lice interaction.

Abstract

Oceanic seabirds are generally thought to avoid overland flight, perhaps limiting larger-scale distribution, but examples exist to the contrary. We asked whether Blue-Footed Boobies Sula nebouxii, Brown Pelicans Pelecanus occidentalis, or frigatebirds Fregata spp. crossed the Perry Isthmus (width 12.25 km, minimum height 23 m), a low point in the wasp-waist shape of Isla Isabela, Galapagos. Except for the Perry Isthmus, Isla Isabela presents an elongated, high-elevation challenge to movement between the central and western waters of Galapagos. Daytime observations over 3.5 d in June 2012 revealed ≥48 crossings by boobies and more than two crossings by frigatebirds. Overland crossing of a terrestrial barrier of this size may be facilitated by the seabirds' ability to see water across the Perry Isthmus from an altitude of 42 m looking west and 43 m looking east, altitudes that both the boobies and frigatebirds attain during foraging. Abstract

The Neotropic cormorant Nannopterum (Phalacrocorax) brasilianus (Suliformes: Phalacrocoracidae) is widely distributed in Central and South America. In Chile, information about parasites for this species is limited to helminths and nematodes, and little is known about other parasite groups. This study documents the parasitic fauna present in 80 Neotropic cormorants’ carcasses collected from 2001 to 2008 in Antofagasta, Biobío, and Ñuble regions. Birds were externally inspected for ectoparasites and necropsies were performed to examine digestive and respiratory organs in search of endoparasites. Ectoparasites collected were cleared and mounted for identification under a microscope. Fecal samples were also evaluated to determine the presence of protozoan parasites employing a flotation technique. A total of 44 (42.5%) of birds were infested with at least one ectoparasite species, while 77 (96.25%) were carrying endoparasites. No protozoan forms were found after examination. Most prevalent endoparasite species found were Contracaecum rudolphii s. l. (72/80, 90%), followed by Pectinopygus gyroceras (33/80, 41.25%), and Profilicollis altmani (26/80, 32.5%). This is the first report of P. altmani, Baruscapillaria carbonis, Avioserpens sp., Cyathostoma (Cyathostoma) phenisci, and Eidmaniella pelucida in the Neotropic cormorant. These findings also expand the distributional range of Andracantha phalacrocoracis, Paradilepis caballeroi, Hysteromorpha triloba, and P. gyroceras to Chile. No Chile, as informações sobre parasitos para essa espécie são limitadas a helmintos e nematoides, e pouco se sabe sobre outros grupos de parasitos. Este estudo documenta a fauna parasitária presente em 80 biguás coletados de 2001 a 2008, nas regiões de Antofagasta, Biobío e Ñuble. As aves foram inspecionadas externamente em busca de ectoparasitas; adicionalmente, foram realizadas necropsias para examinar os órgãos digestivos e respiratórios em busca de endoparasitos. Os ectoparasitos coletados foram limpos e montados para identificação ao microscópio. As amostras de fezes também foram avaliadas para determinar a presença de parasitos protozoários, empregando-se uma técnica de flutuação. Um total de 44 (42,5%) aves estavam infectadas com pelo menos um ectoparasito, enquanto 77 (96,25%) estavam portando endoparasito. Nenhuma forma de protozoário foi encontrada após o exame. As espécies de endoparasitos mais prevalentes encontradas foram Contracaecum rudolphii (72/80, 90%), Pectinopygus gyroceras (33/80, 41.25%) e Profilicollis altmani (26/80, 32.5%). Abstract

We reviewed the occurrences and distributional patterns of migratory species of birds in Brazil. A species was classified as migratory when at least part of its population performs cyclical, seasonal movements with high fidelity to its breeding grounds. Of the 1,919 species of birds recorded in Brazil, 198 (10.3%) are migratory. Of these, 127 (64%) were classified as Migratory and 71 (36%) as Partially Migratory. A few species (83; 4.3%) were classified as Vagrant and eight (0,4%) species could not be defined due to limited information available, or due to conflicting data. Fil: Somenzari, Marina. Abstract

Although the concept of optimal foraging has been extensively discussed, foraging efficiency is difficult to assess in vertebrates. In this study, we determined the foraging efficiency of the Brazilian cormorant,NannopterumbrasilianusGmelin, 1789, by the direct,ad libitumobservation of a group of four to thirteen individuals in an artificial pond at the University of São Paulo, Piracicaba, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Although this study was carried out in a highly anthropic environment, we can still conclude that the Brazilian cormorant is a relatively efficient browser and short-term diver. In anthropic environments, foraging success depends on the amount of time these birds spend diving, and stealing food is less common. Stealing occurs at relatively low rates but tends to be an efficient way to get food.

Abstract

Reproductive timing in many taxa plays a key role in determining breeding productivity , and is often sensitive to climatic conditions . Current climate change may alter the timing of breeding at different rates across trophic levels, potentially resulting in temporal mismatch between the resource requirements of predators and their prey . This is of particular concern for highertrophic-level organisms, whose longer generation times confer a lower rate of evolutionary rescue than primary producers or consumers. However, the disconnection between studies of ecological change in marine systems makes it difficult to detect general changes in the timing of reproduction5 . Here, we use a comprehensive meta-analysis of 209 phenological time series from 145 breeding populations to show that, on average, seabird populations worldwide have not adjusted their breeding seasons over time (−0.020 days yr−1 ) or in response to sea surface temperature (SST) (−0.272 days °C−1 ) between 1952 and 2015. However, marked between-year variation in timing observed in resident species and some Pelecaniformes and Suliformes (cormorants, gannets and boobies) may imply that timing, in some cases, is affected by unmeasured environmental conditions. Abstract

During the Miocene in South America, the family Anhingidae constitutes one of the most conspicuous faunal elements. However, the anhingid record from Patagonia is still sparse. The aim of the present contribution is to describe a new species of Macranhinga coming from Colloncuran levels (early middle Miocene) in Río Negro province, north-central Patagonia (Argentina). The new species is represented by an incomplete proximal end of a tarsometatarsus, distal end of a tibiotarsus, and distal end of a humerus. The phylogenetic relationships of the new species within Macranhinga remains unresolved. South American Neogene anhingids share a number of features that suggest they may belong to a monophyletic clade within this family. Anhingid records from the Miocene of Patagonia indicate that the diversity of this family was far more diverse (at least 4 different species) than currently understood, and was possible comparable to that shown by Miocene beds of Mesopotamian in Argentina and Acre in Brazil. http://www.zoobang.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:3FC228E8-4E2C-4DFD-AB91-79F32269CA98. Abstract

ANHINGIDAE, commonly known as snakebirds or darters, nowadays is represented by one genus and four species: Anhinga anhinga from southern North America, Central America and South America, Anhinga rufa from Africa, Anhinga melanogaster from southern Asia, and Anhinga novaehollandiae from Australasia (Orta, 1992). From an osteological point of view, An. rufa, An. melanogaster, and An. novaehollandiae can be distinguished from An. anhinga (e.g., Harrison, 1978; Brodkorb and Mourer-Chauviré, 1982; Olson, 1985; Becker, 1986). During the Neogene, the diversity of anhingids in North America was represented by two species (Anhinga subvolans and Anhinga grandis), in Europe by one species (Anhinga pannonica), in Asia by one species (Anhinga sp. cf. An. pannonica), in Africa by three species (Anhinga hadarensis, Anhinga sp. cf. An. pannonica, and Anhinga sp. cf. An. melanogaster) and in Australasia by two species (Anhinga walterbolesi and Anhinga malagurala) (e.g., Olson, 1985; Alvarenga, 1995; Campbell, 1996; Worthy, 2012). In South America during this period the diversity was higher than today and included seven species in four genera: Anhinga hesterna, Anhinga minuta, Anhinga fraileyi, Macranhinga paranensis, Macranhinga ranzii, Meganhinga chilensis, and Giganhinga kiyuensis (Worthy, 2012; Diederle, 2015). In addition, it is likely that Anhinga grandis would also have been present in this continent (Rasmussen and Kay, 1992; Alvarenga and Guilherme, 2003). Most of these Neogene species are known from disarticulated and fragmentary specimens, and there are only a few comparable elements among them. The tarsometatarsi and pelvic girdles are good elements for distinguishing among anhingid taxa, although they are not known for all species. Anhinga fraileyi was originally described by Campbell (1996), based on an almost complete tarsometatarsus collected from the Acre Conglomerate Member of the Madre de Dios Formation, assigned to the Tortonian–Messinian Stage of the late Miocene (Campbell et al., 2001). The fossil horizons crop out along the Acre River in the Madre de Dios Department of Peru (type horizon) and Acre State of Brazil. Noriega and Alvarenga (2002) suggested that An. fraileyi is a species of Macranhinga based on a phylogenetic analysis. Later, Cenizo and Agnolin (2010) cited Anhinga fraileyi as Macranhinga fraileyi, although recent authors (e.g., Louchart et al., 2008; Worthy, 2012; Diederle et al., 2012) have maintained its original combination. Here, I provide a detailed reexamination of the holotype of Anhinga fraileyi, which forms the basis for a new taxonomic proposal. Abstract

International audience; Blood parasites of the sub-genus Haemoproteus have been reported in seabirds, in particular in species in the Suliformes order. These parasites are transmitted by hippoboscid flies of the genus Olfersia; strong specificity has been suggested between the vector and its vertebrate host. We investigated the prevalence of Haemoproteus infection in Suliformes and hippoboscid flies in two oceanic islands of the Western Indian Ocean: Europa and Tromelin. In total, 209 blood samples were collected from great frigatebirds (Fregata minor), masked boobies (Sula dactylatra) and red-footed boobies (Sula sula). Forty-one hippoboscid flies were also collected from birds. Seventeen frigatebirds and one fly collected on Europa tested positive for the presence of Haemoproteus parasites by polymerase chain reaction. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial sequences of the Cytochrome b gene showed that parasites were closely related to Haemoproteus iwa reported from frigatebirds in the Pacific Ocean and in the Caribbean. Plasmodium was also detected in a frigatebird on Europa; however, its placement on the phylogenetic tree could not be resolved. We provide strong support for transmission of blood parasites in seabirds in the Western Indian Ocean and suggest that migrations between the Pacific and the Indian oceans could favor the large-scale distribution of Haemoproteus iwa in frigatebird populations.

Abstract

International audience; Presented here is a new species of a cormorant-like bird, assigned to ?Borvocarbo tardatus n.sp., from the Early Miocene of the locality Rauscherod in Southern Germany. The preserved bones, a tibiotarsus, fragmentary ulna and radius, are compared in detail to those of fossil and extant taxa of phalacrocoracoids. Provided that the generic affiliation is confirmed when additional material is discovered, the new species is the stratigraphically youngest evidence and representative of the genus Borvocarbo.
