Student managed investment funds (SMIFs) are part of many AACSB business school programs. This study introduces the innovative structure and operation of the University of the Pacific's Student Investment Fund (SIF) and discusses how the course is structured to help achieve the AACSB's goals of engagement, innovation, and impact. Different from past SMIF research, we also survey SIF alumni regarding their perspectives of this experiential learning experience. The survey results confirm that the structure, operation, and other activities in SIF help achieve the AACSB's goals of engagement, innovation, and impact. The role of governance systems is a critical factor in understanding how industries grow and change. This paper proposes that by using regime theory, a theory commonly used in political science, researchers can better understand the mechanisms of change. Specifically, it utilizes the norms, principles, rules and decision-making procedures that occur in an industry as the critical variables. This argument is supported through a historical examination of events in the US brokerage house industry, focusing on events from the 1960s through to the mid-1990s. This research examines how associations influence industry conditions in order to further member interests. We demonstrate that, when threatened by technological change, associations will attempt to shape industry conditions in order to suppress the adoption of threatening practices or policies. We propose that they do so by engaging in a multidimensional framework of influence directed towards public institutions. Their actions include agenda setting and influencing public policy to further member interests. Our framework is illustrated with actions taken in the USA by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in response to peer-to-peer file sharing technology and its use in the transfer of copyrighted music files. This paper examines the effects of macro-environmental variables on country-level patterns of participation by firms on the US NASDAQ stock exchange. NASDAQ's popularity can be linked to the strength of its technological system, as well as the high frequency of listings of technology-oriented firms. Using concepts from organization theory, strategy and international business, we consider the impact of political, legal, cultural, and colonial heritage status on the strategic capital-seeking behavior of non-US companies in US markets. We empirically demonstrate that similarity in legal systems and a shared colonial heritage will influence the probability of a non-US country having firm participation on the NASDAQ. This article suggests that by explicitly addressing issues of the macro environment, scholars will be better able to understand and predict strategic behavior. A wide range of macro-environmental forces affects firm behavior. Economic factors have been widely discussed in the literature but less attention has been paid to other critical exogenous forces. In particular, the role of wider systems of meaning (shared understandings by a variety of actors) in determining firm activity is largely ignored, although they have been discussed in the organizations literature in a variety of ways. Specifically, we examine the effects of national culture, legal system, political system, and colonial heritage level variables on the equity acquisition process by countries with firms listed on the United States NASDAQ stock exchange from 1991 to 2002. We find that combining perspectives and using variables from the macro-environment allows us to better predict and understand firm strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
