In the present study we attempted to ascertain the ethnic and religious structure of the population which in 1851 lived on the territory that is now known as Transcarpathia, based on data from the book by Elek Fényes (The Geographic Dictionary of Hungary… / Magyarország geographiai szótára…) published in the same year. According to the results of our research, we can state that the dominant ethnic community of the region at that time were the Rusyns (in Elek Fényes’s wording Russians), who lived predominantly in the mountainous territories. An important role in the ethnic structure was also played by Hungarians, Germans, Slovaks and Vlachs (Romanians). As to the religious composition, the most important denomination was that of Greek Catholics/Eastern Orthodox Christians, who formed an absolute majority in the region, their settlement area showing a close relationship with the location of the Rusyns.

Background: Cardiac rotational parameters in primary symptomatic left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) are not well understood. We aimed to analyze cardiac rotation measured with cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) and speckle-tracking echocardiography (Echo-ST) in LVNC morphology subjects with preserved LVEF and different genotypes and healthy controls. Methods: Our retrospective study included 54 LVNC subjects with preserved LVEF and 54 control individuals. We evaluated functional and rotational parameters with CMR in the total study population and with echocardiography in 39 LVNC and 40 C individuals. All LVNC subjects were genotyped with a 174-gene next-generation sequencing panel and grouped into the subgroups: benign (B), variant of uncertain significance (VUS), and pathogenic (P). Results: In comparison with controls, LVNC subjects had reduced apical rotational degree (p = 0.004) and one-third had negative apical rotation. While the degree of apical rotation was comparable between the three genetic subgroups, they differed significantly in the direction of apical rotation (p<0.001). In contrast to control and B groups, all four studied cardiac rotational patterns were identified in the P and VUS subgroups, namely normal rotation, positive and negative rigid body rotation, and reverse rotation. When the CMR-FT and Echo-ST methods were compared, the direction and pattern of cardiac rotation had moderate to good association (p<0.001) whereas the rotational degrees showed no reasonable correlation or agreement. Conclusion: While measuring cardiac rotation using both CMR-FT and Echo-ST methods, subclinical mechanical differences were identified in subjects with LVNC phenotype and preserved LVEF, especially in cases with genetic involvement. The environment of a city is influenced by global and local climate changes, pollution load from transport, industry and local heat sources. Green spaces as part of the urban green infrastructure fulfil multiple ecosystem services and improve the environmental and residential quality of a city. The level of positive effects of green spaces depends on their area, distribution within the city and the proportion of trees. The aim of the paper was to evaluate land cover structure in a selected segment of the housing estate Klokočina in Nitra, Slovakia. The evaluation focused on the share of biologically active and inactive surfaces, as well as the parameters of woody plant structure in green spaces. Green areas account for 58.70%, while built-up areas, parking lots and roads cover in total 41.30%. Biologically inactive anthropogenic horizontal and of building envelope areas represent 67.30%. Biologically active green areas represent 32.70%. The share of areas with tree crown overlap on horizontal areas is 20.82%, other areas are paved surfaces or grassland. We calculated the indices of the quality of green spaces from the individual categories of areas: proportional green area index (PGAI), effective green area index (EGAI) and tree shade index (TSI). The tree species composition consists of 36 deciduous and 11 coniferous tree species, and 20 shrub species. We evaluated the biometric traits of trees as the tree height, crown width, stem girth and tree vitality class (TVC). The correlations between tree traits were statistically tested with a significant result. In the group of biologically active areas of greenery, we propose to increase the proportion of trees, to establish more natural lawns and xerophyte flower beds. In the category of inactive areas, we propose the reconstruction of parking lots to grass paved surfaces.

The RFamide peptide family is a group of proteins that share a common C-terminal arginine–phenylalanine–amide motif. To date, the family comprises five groups in mammals: neuropeptide FF, LPXRFamides/RFamide-related peptides, prolactin releasing peptide, QRFP, and kisspeptins. Different RFamide peptides have their own cognate receptors and are produced by different cell populations, although they all can also bind to neuropeptide FF receptors with different affinities. RFamide peptides function in the brain as neuropeptides regulating key aspects of homeostasis such as energy balance, reproduction, and cardiovascular function. Furthermore, they are involved in the organization of the stress response including modulation of pain. Considering the interaction between stress and various parameters of homeostasis, the role of RFamide peptides may be critical in the development of stress-related neuropathologies. This review will therefore focus on the role of RFamide peptides as possible key hubs in stress and stress-related psychopathologies. The neurotransmitter coexpression profile of RFamide-producing cells is also discussed, highlighting its potential functional significance. The development of novel pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of stress-related disorders is an ongoing need. Thus, the importance of RFamide research is underlined by the emergence of peptidergic and G-protein coupled receptor-based therapeutic targets in the pharmaceutical industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: The effects of short-term social isolation during adulthood have not yet been fully established in rats behaviourally, and not at all transcriptomically in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). (2) Methods: We measured the behavioural effects of housing adult male rats in pairs or alone for 10 days. We also used RNA sequencing to measure the accompanying gene expression alterations in the mPFC of male rats. (3) Results: The isolated animals exhibited reduced sociability and social novelty preference, but increased social interaction. There was no change in their aggression, anxiety, or depression-like activity. Transcriptomic analysis revealed a differential expression of 46 genes between the groups. The KEGG pathway analysis showed that differentially expressed genes are involved in neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, particularly in the dopaminergic and peptidergic systems, and addiction. Subsequent validation confirmed the decreased level of three altered genes: regulator of G protein signalling 9 (Rgs9), serotonin receptor 2c (Htr2c), and Prodynorphin (Pdyn), which are involved in dopaminergic, serotonergic, and peptidergic function, respectively. Antagonizing Htr2c confirmed its role in social novelty discrimination. (4) Conclusions: Social homeostatic regulations include monoaminergic and peptidergic systems of the mPFC. Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is the only biomarker routinely used in the laboratory diagnostics of sarcoidosis, and ACE inhibitor (ACEi) drugs are among the most prescribed drugs worldwide. Taking ACEi can mislead medical teams by lowering ACE activity, delaying diagnosis and giving a false impression of disease activity of sarcoidosis. We aimed to develop a simple method to detect the presence of ACEi drugs in samples, to investigate the ACEi medication-caused interference and consequences in a retrospective study. ACE activity and the level of ACE inhibition were determined for 1823 patients with suspected sarcoidosis. These values were compared with the therapeutic information at the first and follow-up visits. A total of 302 patients had biochemical evidence of an ACEi drug effect during diagnostic ACE activity testing. In their case, ACE activity was significantly lower (median(IQR): 4.41 U/L(2.93–6.72)) than in patients not taking ACEi (11.32 U/L(8.79–13.92), p<0.01). In 62 sarcoidosis patients, the ACEi reduced ACE activity to the reference range or below. Only in 40 % of the cases was the medication list recorded in the outpatient chart and only in 3 cases was low ACE activity associated with ACEi use. 67 % of the repeated ACE activity measurements were also performed during ACEi therapy. Our study revealed that the use of ACEi is common in patients with suspected sarcoidosis. The ACE activity lowering effect of ACEi drugs may escape the attention of medical teams which can lead to diagnostic errors and unnecessary tests. The woody plant species composition has been evaluated in three cadastral territories of southwestern Slovakia, together in 77 habitats of non-forest woody vegetation (NFWV). A total of 43 tree species have been identified; 8 of them were alien and 5 species were cultural fruit trees. In total 20 shrub species were identified, out of which 3 were alien. Three woody species are classified as invasive according to the law in Slovakia: Acer negundo L., Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, and Lycium barbarum L. They occurred only in 2, maximum in 4 of the evaluated habitats. The most occurring alien tree species Robinia pseudoacacia L. was generally identified in 58 habitats and in 48 habitats, with an incidence over 40% and dominance index of 70.6. The second most occurring alien tree Populus × canadensis had a dominance index of 8.3. The dominant native trees in NFWV were Acer campestre L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Quercus robur L., Salix fragilis L. with the dominance index of 1–5 only.

Woody plants in roadside green spaces of rural settlements provide a wide range of ecosystem functions and services. The study presented in this paper was conducted in three rural settlements in Western Slovakia, representing three different rural landscape types—lowland, basin, and mountainous landscapes. The assessed woody vegetation is situated in diverse settlement structures, with various spatial patterns. A comprehensive woody plant assessment was conducted in selected central streetscapes of three model settlements, examining spatial, compositional, visual, aesthetic, and other values, as well as the characteristics of woody plants. These attributes were clustered according to five main functions and fourteen value parameters and the results were assigned to three quality categories, to objectivise a qualitative woody plant assessment in roadside vegetation structures in the countryside. The findings show the level of suitability of woody plants based on how they fulfil aesthetic, compositional, climate, safety, cultural, and historical functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Angiotensin–converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are the primarily chosen drugs to treat various cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension. Although the most recent guidelines do not differentiate among the various ACE inhibitory drugs, there are substantial pharmacological differences. Goal: Here, we tested if lipophilicity affects the efficacy of ACE inhibitory drugs when used as the first therapy in newly identified hypertensives in a prospective study. Methods: We tested the differences in the cardiovascular efficacy of the hydrophilic lisinopril (8.3 ± 3.0 mg/day) and the lipophilic enalapril (5.5 ± 2.3 mg/day) (n = 59 patients). The cardiovascular parameters were determined using sonography (flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in the brachial artery, intima-media thickness of the carotid artery), 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (peripheral arterial blood pressure), and arteriography (aortic blood pressure, augmentation index, and pulse wave velocity) before and after the initiation of ACE inhibitor therapy. Results: Both enalapril and lisinopril decreased blood pressure. However, lisinopril failed to improve arterial endothelial function (lack of effects on FMD) when compared to enalapril. Enalapril-mediated improved arterial endothelial function (FMD) positively correlated with its blood–pressure–lowering effect. In contrast, there was no correlation between the decrease in systolic blood pressure and FMD in the case of lisinopril treatment. Conclusion: The blood–pressure–lowering effects of ACE inhibitor drugs are independent of their lipophilicity. In contrast, the effects of ACE inhibition on arterial endothelial function are associated with lipophilicity: the hydrophilic lisinopril was unable to improve, while the lipophilic enalapril significantly improved endothelial function. Moreover, the effects on blood pressure and endothelial function did not correlate in lisinopril-treated patients, suggesting divergent mechanisms in the regulation of blood pressure and endothelial function upon ACE inhibitory treatment.
