An optimal estimation algorithm to retrieve the cloud optical depth (COD) and cloud particle effective radius (CER) from spectral zenith radiances observed by narrow field-of-view (FOV) ground-based sky radiometers was developed. To further address the filter degradation problem while analyzing long-term observation data, an on-site calibration procedure is proposed, which has good accuracy compared with the standard calibration transfer method. An error evaluation study conducted by assuming errors in observed transmittances and ancillary data for water vapor concentration and surface albedo suggests that the errors in input data affect retrieved CER more than COD. Observations from the new Japanese geostationary satellite Himawari-8 permit quasi-real-time estimation of global shortwave radiation at an unprecedented temporal resolution. However, accurate comparisons with ground-truthing observations are essential to assess their uncertainty. In this study, we evaluated the Himawari-8 global radiation product AMATERASS using observations recorded at four SKYNET stations in Japan and, for certain analyses, from the surface network of the Japanese Meteorological Agency in 2016. We found that the spatiotemporal variability of the satellite estimates was smaller than that of the ground observations; variability decreased with increases in the time step and spatial domain. Cloud variability was the main source of uncertainty in the satellite radiation estimates, followed by direct effects caused by aerosols and bright albedo. Under all-sky conditions, good agreement was found between satellite and ground-based data, with a mean bias in the range of 20–30 W m−2 (i.e., AMATERASS overestimated ground observations) and a root mean square error (RMSE) of approximately 70–80 W m−2. However, results depended on the time step used in the validation exercise, on the spatial domain, and on the different climatological regions. In particular, the validation performed at 2.5 min showed largest deviations and RMSE values ranging from about 110 W m−2 for the mainland to a maximum of 150 W m−2 in the subtropical region. We also detected a limited overestimation in the number of clear-sky episodes, particularly at the pixel level. Overall, satellite-based estimates were higher under overcast conditions, whereas frequent episodes of cloud-induced enhanced surface radiation (i.e., measured radiation was greater than expected clear-sky radiation) tended to reduce this difference. Finally, the total mean bias was approximately 10–15 W m−2 under clear-sky conditions, mainly because of overall instantaneous direct aerosol forcing efficiency in the range of 120–150 W m−2 per unit of aerosol optical depth (AOD). A seasonal anticorrelation between AOD and global radiation differences was evident at all stations and was also observed within the diurnal cycle.

This article introduces an international regional experiment, East Asian Regional Experiment 2005 (EAREX 2005), carried out in March-April 2005 in the east Asian region, as one of the first phase regional experiments under the UNEP Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC) project, and discusses some outstanding features of aerosol characteristics and its direct radiative forcing in the east Asian region, with some comparison with the results obtained in another ABC early phase regional experiment, ABC Maldives Monsoon Experiment (APMEX) conducted in the south Asian region. Time series of aerosol optical thickness (AOT), single scattering albedo (SSA), aerosol extinction cross section profile and CO concentration shows that air pollutants and mineral dust were transported every 5 to 7 days in the EAREX region to produce SSA values at wavelength of 700 nm from 0.86 to 0.96 and large clear-sky shortwave forcing efficiency at 500 nm from 60 W m-2 to go W m-2, though there are some unexplained inconsistencies depending on the evaluation method. The simulated whole-sky total forcing in the EAREX region is -1 to - 2 W m-2 at TOA and -2 to -10 W m-2 at surface in March 2005 which is smaller in magnitude than in the APMEX region, mainly because of large cloud fraction in this region (0.70 at Gosan versus 0.51 at Hanimadhoo in the ISCCP total cloud fraction). We suggest there may be an underestimation of the forcing due to overestimation of the simulated cloudiness and aerosol scale height. On the other hand, the possible error in the simulated surface albedo may cause an overestimation of the magnitude of the forcing over the land area. We also propose simple formulae for shortwave radiative forcing to understand the role of aerosol parameters and surface condition to determine the aerosol forcing. The aerosol optical properties and their associated radiative effects are derived from sky-radiometer and surface solar radiation data collected over the Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL) for the period of March to May (MAM) 2009. The result shows that the seasonal mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm in MAM is 0.40. The single scattering albedo (SSA) at 500 nm in MAM at SACOL fluctuates significantly ranging from 0.82 to 0.98. The averaged value of SSA there for background aerosol is 0.90 in MAM, while it is smaller (0.87) during the dust event outbreak period. The smaller SSA can be interpreted as the result of larger particles during dust events. The averaged asymmetry factor (ASY) at 500 nm during dust event period is 0.73, which is larger than 0.70 of background aerosols. The averaged shortwave radiative effects of the aerosols during dust event period in MAM are 0.68, −70.02 and 70.70 W m−2, respectively, at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), surface and in the atmosphere. The aerosols heat the atmosphere during dust event period by up to about 2 K day−1 (daily averaged), which is 60 % larger than the heating (1.25 K day−1) of background aerosols. The significant heating effect in the atmosphere of the aerosols during dust event is determined by larger AOD and smaller SSA.

Atmospheric profiles (temperature, pressure, and humidity) are commonly used parameters for aerosols and cloud properties retrievals. In preparation of the launch of the Global Change Observation Mission-Climate/Second-Generation GLobal Imager (GCOM-C/SGLI) satellite, an evaluation study on the sensitivity of atmospheric models to variations of atmospheric conditions is conducted. In this evaluation, clear sky and above low clouds water vapour radiances of the upper troposphere obtained from satellite observations and those simulated by atmospheric models are compared. The models studied are the Nonhydrostatic ICosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) and the National Center for Environmental Protection/Department Of Energy (NCEP/DOE). The satellite observations are from the Terra/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (Terra/MODIS) satellite. The simulations performed are obtained through a forward radiative transfer calculation procedure. The resulting radiances are transformed into the upper tropospheric brightness temperature (UTBT) and relative humidity (UTRH). The discrepancies between the simulated data and the observations are analyzed. These analyses show that both the NICAM and the NCEP/DOE simulated UTBT and UTRH have comparable distribution patterns. However the simulations’ differences with the observations are generally lower with the NCEP/DOE than with the NICAM. The NCEP/DOE model outputs very often overestimate the UTBT and therefore present a drier upper troposphere. The impact of the lower troposphere instability (dry convection) on the upper tropospheric moisture and the consequences on the models’ results are evaluated through a thunderstorm and moisture predictor (the K-stability index). The results obtained show a positive relation between the instability and the root mean square error (RMSE: observation versus models). The study of the impact of convective clouds shows that the area covered by these clouds increases with the humidity of the upper troposphere in clear sky and above low clouds, and at the same time, the error between the observations and the models also increases. The impact of the above low clouds heat distribution on the models is studied through the relation between the low clouds cover and their effective emissivity. The models’ error appears to be high at midrange effective emissivity clouds.

[1] The ABC (Atmospheric Brown Cloud project) Gosan campaign 2005 (EAREX2005) was carried out at Gosan on Cheju Island, Korea, in March 2005. The objective of the campaign was to clarify aerosol characteristics as well as to compare each instrument for radiation and chemical observation. From these observations, eleven clear sky cases were selected and analyzed to estimate the aerosol radiative effect (ARE). As a result, the mean ARE during the campaign was -20.8 ± 9.0 W/m 2 at the surface, -8.3 ± 5.3 W/m 2 at the top of the atmosphere and 12.6 ± 6.8 W/m 2 in the atmosphere. The ARE efficiency was -81.6 W/m 2 , -32.5 W/m 2 and 49.4 W/m 2 , respectively. These results suggest that the aerosols during the campaign might consist of more or less yellow sand in comparison with the results simulated using typical aerosol models. On the basis of simultaneous observation of the depolarization ratio by lidar, a common feature of yellow sand is also found in a daily trend of aerosols through the period. A yellow sand index (YSI) is introduced using a column integration of extinction coefficients for spherical and nonspherical particles, separated empirically by the depolarization ratio. This index is equivalent to the fraction of yellow sand (nonspherical) aerosol in the observed aerosol optical thickness. The YSI has a good correlation with the Angstrom index (a) obtained by sky radiometer observations and shows that the increase in YSI corresponds to the decrease in a and the increase in single scattering albedo of aerosol. However, the YSI is poorly correlated with the ARE efficiency.

� 8W /m 2 at the top of atmosphere (TOA) and � 10 to � 23 W/m 2 at Earth’s surface of Gosan (33.28N, 127.17E) and Amami-Oshima (28.15N, 129.30E) sites, though there is a large regional difference caused by changes in the aerosol optical thickness and single scattering albedo. The cloud forcing is estimated as � 20 to � 40 W/m 2 , so that the aerosol direct forcing can be comparable to the cloud radiative forcing at surface. However, the estimate of the aerosol direct forcing thus obtained strongly depends on the estimation method of the aerosol properties, especially on the single scattering albedo, generating a method difference about 40%. The radiative forcing of the aerosol indirect effect is roughly estimated from satellite method and SPRINTARS model as � 1t o� 3W /m 2 at both TOA and surface. Angular distributions of the intensity of light scattered by airborne particles were measured for both parallel and perpendicularly polarized components. A precision polar nephelometer was constructed for use of this study. The data were analyzed using a newly developed inversion library method to give a simultaneous estimate of the complex index of refraction m = mr − mii of aerosols and their size distribution, where mr is the real part and mi the imaginary part of the refractive index. Results of 302 measurements show that the monthly mean values of mr and mi vary within the range 1.47–1.57 and 0.009–0.037, respectively, depending upon the relative humidity. The size distribution of aerosols can be approximated by the log-normal distribution function; the mean radius and the standard deviation are found to be rg = 0.138 μm and σg = 2.56, respectively, as geometrical mean values for the whole data.
