Marine tetrapods occupy important roles in modern marine ecosystems and often gather in large aggregations driven by patchy prey distribution, 1 ,2 social or reproductive behaviors, 3 ,4 or oceanographic factors. 5 Here, we show that similar grouping behaviors evolved in an early marine tetrapod lineage, documented by dozens of specimens of the giant ichthyosaur Shonisaurus in the Luning Formation in West Union Canyon, Nevada, USA. 6 ,7 A concentration of at least seven skeletons closely preserved on a single bedding plane received the bulk of previous attention. However, many more specimens are preserved across ∼106 square meters and ∼200 stratigraphic meters of outcrop representing an estimated >105–6 years. Unlike other marine-tetrapod-rich deposits, this assemblage is essentially monotaxic; other vertebrate fossils are exceptionally scarce. Large individuals are disproportionately abundant, with the exception of multiple neonatal or embryonic specimens, indicating an unusual demographic composition apparently lacking intermediate-sized juveniles or subadults. Combined with geological evidence, our data suggest that dense aggregations of Shonisaurus inhabited this moderately deep, low-diversity, tropical marine environment for millennia during the latest Carnian Stage of the Late Triassic Period (237–227 Ma). Thus, philopatric grouping behavior in marine tetrapods, potentially linked to reproductive activity, has an antiquity of at least 230 million years.

Satellite instruments play a valuable role in detecting, monitoring and characterising emissions of ash and gas into the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions. Plumes of ash and sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the April 2021 eruption of La Soufrière volcano on St Vincent in the Eastern Caribbean were observed by a multiple satellite instruments. This study looks at these plumes with two satellite instruments: the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on the MetOp platforms. Using true and false colour images, and brightness temperature difference images produced from the ABI data, a minimum of 32 eruptive events were identified. The ABI images were used to determine the approximate start and end times and character of each event. In this way the eruption has been divided into four phases: (1) an initial explosive event, (2) a sustained event lasting over nine hours, (3) a pulsatory phase with 23 explosive events in a 54 hour period and (4) a waning sequence of explosive events. The IASI instrument was used to study the dispersion of SO2 from this eruption. The results showed a highly complex structure to the plume, in terms of the column amounts and height, which is likely linked to the multiple explosive events. The SO2 is shown to have largely been emitted between 13 and 19 km. This was primarily in the upper troposphere and around the height of the tropopause, but with some emission into the stratosphere. The SO2 was transported around the globe with parts of the plume reaching as far as 45° S and 45° N. The largest SO2 atmospheric burden measured with IASI was 0.31±0.09 Tg, recorded on the 13 April 2021 (descending orbits). The SO2 masses were converted into fluxes. The SO2 flux was shown to peak on 10 April and then shown to decrease over time. By summing the IASI SO2 flux results, it is estimated that a total of 0.57±0.44 Tg of SO2 was emitted to the atmosphere. However, due to the limitations associated with the retrieval this should be considered a minimum estimate of the total mass of SO2 emitted. An average e-folding time of 7.09±5.70 days was computed based on the IASI SO2 results: similar to other tropical eruptions of this magnitude. There are a number of similarities between the 1979 and 2021 eruptions at La Soufrière. For example, both eruptions consisted of a series of explosive events with varied heights including some emission into the stratosphere. The similarities between the 1979 and 2021 highlight the importance of studying these eruptions to be prepared for future activity.

Past large igneous province (LIP) emplacement is commonly associated with mantle plume upwelling and led to major carbon emissions. One of Earth’s largest past environmental perturbations, the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE; ~183 Ma), has been linked to Karoo-Ferrar LIP emplacement. However, the role of mantle plumes in controlling the onset and timing of LIP magmatism is poorly understood. Using global plate reconstruction models and Lower Toarcian sedimentary mercury (Hg) concentrations, we demonstrate (i) that the T-OAE occurred coevally with Karoo-Ferrar emplacement and (ii) that timing and duration of LIP emplacement was governed by reduced Pangean plate motion, associated with a reversal in plate movement direction. This new model mechanistically links Earth’s interior and surficial processes, and the mechanism is consistent with the timing of several of the largest LIP volcanic events throughout Earth history and, thus, the timing of many of Earth’s past global climate change and mass extinction events.

The caldera-forming Samalas eruption of the Samalas–Rinjani volcanic complex on Lombok, Indonesia, in 1257 CE ranks as one of the most explosive and sulphur-rich eruptions of the past thousand years. Along with other significant events (e.g. Tambora 1815, El Chichón 1982), Samalas 1257 forms a class of powerful eruptions of magmas of intermediate alkaline composition, which remain relatively understudied. This study aims to better understand the pre-eruptive magma reservoir conditions and volatile storage capacities of intermediate alkaline systems, using the 1257 Samalas eruption as a case study. Systematic partial-equilibrium experiments were run to constrain potential magma reservoir conditions (25–200 MPa and 850–1000°C) by examining changes in the chemistry and textures of experimental glass and mineral products. Natural trachydacite pumice from the 1257 Samalas eruption was used as the experimental charge for a series of water-saturated experiments run in cold-seal pressure vessels, buffered at an oxygen fugacity ƒO2 of NNO/NNO + 1 log units. Assessing the match between natural and experimental glass compositions and mineral phases and textures reveals that pre-eruptive magma reservoir conditions were between 875°C and 930°C and ca. 100–150 MPa (4.5 ± 1km depth). Breakdown of experimental amphibole at pressures below 75 MPa, and plagioclase instability at 950°C/100 MPa, provide the strongest constraints on phase stabilities that are consistent with the magma storage region. In the observed temperature and pressure range, the natural compositions of plagioclase, amphibole and orthopyroxene are replicated in experimentally precipitated rims. Clinopyroxene and high anorthite plagioclase (An>64) in the natural mineral assemblage could not be replicated in the experiments, implying that these compositions most likely did not grow in the shallow pre-eruptive reservoir of Mt Samalas. The pre-eruptive storage depths of trachydacite magma are significantly shallower than the postulated magma storage at the currently active basaltic-andesite magmatic system at Rinjani, and thus monitoring magma storage depth may be a useful indicator of changing magma composition in the future. Our findings show that highly explosive VEI 7 eruptions of intermediate alkaline magma can be fed from a relatively limited range of storage pressures (100–150 MPa), suggesting accumulation of magma in one place, rather than the rapid extraction of magma from a vertically extensive, transcrustal magma system.

The Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) is renowned as a focus of investigations into human origins. It is also the site of many large volcanic calderas, whose eruptions have spanned the timeframe of speciation, cultural innovation, and dispersal of our species. Yet, despite their significance for dating human fossils and cultural materials, the timing and geochemical signatures of some of the largest eruptions have remained poorly constrained at best. Here, through a programme of field surveys, geochemical analysis and 40Ar/39Ar dating, we report the ages of MER ignimbrites and link them to widespread tephra layers found in sequences of archaeological and paleoenvironmental significance. We date major eruptions of Fentale (76 ± 18 ka), Shala (ca. 145–155 ka), Kone (184 ± 42 ka and ca. 200 ± 12 ka) and Gedemsa (251 ± 47 ka) volcanoes, and correlate a suite of regionally important tephra horizons. Geochemical analysis highlights the predominantly peralkaline rhyolitic melt compositions (7.5–12 wt% Na2O + K2O, 70–76 wt% SiO2) across the central MER and remarkable similarity in incompatible trace element ratios, limiting the correlation of deposits via glass composition alone. However, by integrating stratigraphic and geochronological evidence from proximal deposits, lake sediment cores and distal outcrops at archaeological sites, we have traced ash layers associated with the ca. 177 ka Corbetti, ca. 145–155 ka Shala and ca. 108 ka Bora-Baricha-Tullu-Moye eruptions across southern Ethiopia. In addition to strengthening the tephrochronological framework that supports paleoenvironmental and archaeological work in the region, our findings have wider implications for evaluating the hypothesis of a middle Pleistocene ‘ignimbrite flare-up’ in the MER, and for evaluating the impacts of these great eruptions on landscapes, hydrology, and human ecology. Gas and particulate matter (PM) emissions from Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, cause substantial regional volcanic air pollution (VAP). We evaluate the suitability of low-cost SO2 and PM sensors for a continuous air-quality network. The network was deployed for six months in five populated areas (4–16 km from crater). The SO2 sensors failed and recorded erroneous values on multiple occasions, likely due to corrosion, requiring significant maintenance commitment. The PM sensors were found to be robust but data required correction for humidity. SO2 measurements could not be used as stand-alone tools to detect occurrence of VAP episodes (VAPE), but an SO2/PM correlation reliably achieved this at near-field stations, as confirmed by meteorological forecasts and satellite imagery. Above-background PM concentrations reliably identified VAPE at both near-field and far-field stations. We suggest that a continuous network can be built from a combination of low-cost PM and SO2 sensors with a greater number of PM-only sensors.

Explosive, caldera-forming eruptions are exceptional and hazardous volcanic phenomena. The 1883 eruption of Krakatau is the largest such event for which there are detailed contemporary written accounts, allowing information on the eruptive progression to be integrated with the stratigraphy and geochemistry of its products. Freshly exposed sequences of the 1883 eruptive deposits of Krakatau, stripped of vegetation by a tsunami generated by the flank collapse of Anak Krakatau in 2018, shed new light on the eruptive sequence. Matrix glass from the base of the stratigraphy is chemically distinct and more evolved than the overlying sequence indicating the presence of a shallow, silicic, melt-rich region that was evacuated during the early eruptive activity from May 1883 onwards. Disruption of the shallow, silicic magma may have led to the coalescence and mixing of chemically similar melts representative of a range of magmatic conditions, as evidenced by complex and varied plagioclase phenocryst zoning profiles. This mixing, over a period of two to three months, culminated in the onset of the climactic phase of the eruption on 26th August 1883. Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) emplaced during this phase of the eruption show a change in transport direction from north east to south west, coinciding with the deposition of a lithic lag breccia unit. This may be attributed to partial collapse of an elevated portion of the island, resulting in the removal of a topographic barrier. Edifice destruction potentially further reduced the overburden on the underlying magmatic system, leading to the most explosive and energetic phase of the eruption in the morning of 27th August 1883. This phase of the eruption culminated in a final period of caldera collapse, which is recorded in the stratigraphy as a second lithic lag breccia. The massive PDC deposits emplaced during this final phase contain glassy blocks up to 8 m in size, observed for the first time in 2019, which are chemically similar to the pyroclastic sequence. These blocks are interpreted as representing stagnant, shallow portions of the magma reservoir disrupted during the final stages of caldera formation. This study provides new evidence for the role that precursory eruptions and amalgamation of shallow crustal magma bodies potentially play in the months leading up to caldera-forming eruptions.

Episodes of large igneous province (LIP) volcanism punctuate Earth history. LIPs are anomalous geologically rapid large‐volume accumulations of igneous rock on the Earth’s surface and in the shallow crust. Periods of LIP emplacement are often temporally associated with times of profound environmental and climatic change throughout Earth history, particularly during the last 300 million years. The fluxes of gas and particles emitted during LIP volcanism are key candidates for triggering these Earth system responses. Understanding these events, their feedbacks and impacts on the Earth system requires collaboration between the fields of volcanology, atmospheric science, ocean chemistry, sedimentology and palaeobiology amongst other fields. This presentation will explore how evidence of the environmental impacts of LIP volcanism and the processes leading to these effects is best combined often from disparate sources including: (1) temporal associations between the dates or proxies of LIPs and evidence of environmental change captured in the geological record; (2) historical records or monitoring studies of the effects of large‐scale recent volcanic activity such as the Laki eruption in 1783–1784 CE and its deposits; and (3) scaling up from observations and measurements of the environmental impacts of present‐day volcanism such as the 2014–2015 Holuhraun eruption and the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone eruption at Kīlauea, Hawai‘i. Recent progress in each of these areas sets the scene for future advances in our understanding of these profoundly important events in Earth’s history.

Magmas from continental arcs built on thick crust have elevated incompatible element abundances and “enriched” radiogenic isotope ratios compared to magmas erupted in island and continental arcs overlying thinner crust. The relative influence of the slab, mantle, and upper plate on this variability is heavily debated. The Andean Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ; 33–46°S) is an ideal setting to investigate the production of enriched continental arc compositions, because both crustal thickness and magma chemistry vary coherently along strike. However, the scarcity of primitive magmas in the thick-crusted northern SVZ has hindered previous regional studies. To better address the origin of enriched continental compositions, we investigate the geochemistry (major and trace element abundances, 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios) of new mafic samples from Don Casimiro and Maipo volcanoes within the Diamante-Maipo Caldera Complex of the northern SVZ. While evolved Diamante-Maipo samples show evidence for crustal assimilation, the trace element and isotopic enrichment of the most mafic samples cannot result from crustal processing, as no known regional or global basement lithologies are enriched in all of the necessary incompatible trace elements. Subduction erosion models similarly fail to account for the enriched isotopic and trace element signature of these samples. Instead, we suggest that the enrichment of northern SVZ magmas is derived from an enriched ambient mantle component (similar to EM1-type ocean island basalts), superimposed on a northward decline in melt extent. A substantial, but nearly uniform contribution of melts from subducting sediment and altered oceanic crust are required at all latitudes. The EM1-like enrichment may arise from recycling of metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (M-SCLM), as the isotopic trajectory of primitive rear-arc monogenetic cones trend towards the compositions of SCLM melts sampled across South America. Isotopic data from spatially distributed rear-arc centres demonstrate that the arc-parallel variations in the degree of EM1-type enrichment observed in arc-front samples are also present up to 600 km behind the trench in the rear-arc. Rear-arc trace element systematics require significant but variable quantities of slab melts to be transported to the mantle wedge at these large trench distances. Overall, we show that a unified model incorporating variable mantle enrichment, slab additions, and melt extents can account for along and across-arc trends within the SVZ. The recognition that mantle enrichment plays a key role in the production of enriched continental compositions in the SVZ has important implications for our understanding of the chemical evolution of the Earth. If ambient mantle enrichment is not taken into account, petrogenetic models of evolved lavas may overestimate the role of crustal assimilation, which, in turn, may lead models of continental crust growth to overestimate the amount of continental material that has been recycled back into the mantle.

Santorini Volcano is an outstanding natural laboratory for studying arc volcanism, having had twelve Plinian eruptions over the last 350,000 years, at least four of which caused caldera collapse. Periods between Plinian eruptions are characterized by intra-caldera edifice construction and lower intensity explosive activity. The Plinian eruptions are fed from magma reservoirs at 4–8 km depth that are assembled over several centuries prior to eruption by the arrival of high-flux magma pulses from deeper in the sub-caldera reservoir. Unrest in 2011–2012 involved intrusion of two magma pulses at about 4 km depth, suggesting that the behaviour of the modern-day volcano is similar to the behaviour of the volcano prior to Plinian eruptions. Emerging understanding of Santorini's plumbing system will enable better risk mitigation at this highly hazardous volcano.

Radiative transfer models used in remote sensing and hazard assessment of volcanic ash require knowledge of ash optical parameters. Here, we characterise the bulk and glass compositions of a representative suite of volcanic ash samples with known complex refractive indices (n + ik: where n is the real and k is the imaginary part). Using a linear regression model, we develop a new parameterization allowing the complex refractive index of volcanic ash to be estimated from ash SiO2 content or ratio of non-bridging oxygens to tetrahedrally-coordinated cations (NBO/T). At visible wavelengths, n correlates better with bulk than glass composition (both SiO2 and NBO/T), and k correlates better with SiO2 content than NBO/T. Over a broader spectral range (0.4–19 μm), bulk correlates better than glass composition, and NBO/T generally correlates better than SiO2 content for both parts of the refractive index. In order to understand the impacts of our new parameterization on satellite retrievals, we compared IASI satellite (wavelengths 3.62–15.5 μm) mass loading retrievals using our new approach with retrievals that assumed a generic (Eyjafjallajökull) ash refractive index. There are significant differences in mass loading using our calculated indices specific to ash type rather than a generic index. Where mass loadings increase, there is often improvement in retrieval quality (corresponding to cost function decrease). This new parameterization of refractive index variation with ash composition will help to improve remote sensing retrievals for the rapid identification of ash and quantitative analysis of mass loadings from satellite data on operational timescales.

Abstract For many magmatic systems, crystal compositions preserve a complex and protracted history which may be largely decoupled from their carrier melts. The crystal cargo may hold clues to the physical distribution of melt and crystals in a magma reservoir and how magmas are assembled prior to eruptions. Here we present a geochemical study of a suite of samples from three peralkaline volcanoes in the Main Ethiopian Rift. Whilst whole-rock data shows strong fractional crystallisation signatures, the trace element systematics of feldspars, and their relationship to their host glasses, reveals complexity. Alkali feldspars, particularly those erupted during caldera-forming episodes, have variable Ba concentrations, extending to high values that are not in equilibrium with the carrier liquids. Some of the feldspars are antecrysts, which we suggest are scavenged from a crystal-rich mush. The antecrysts crystallised from a Ba-enriched (more primitive) melt, before later entrainment into a Ba-depleted residual liquid. Crystal-melt segregation can occur on fast timescales in these magma reservoirs, owing to the low viscosity nature of peralkaline liquids. The separation of enough residual melt to feed a crystal-poor post-caldera rhyolitic eruption may take as little as months to tens of years (much shorter than typical repose periods of 300-400 years). International audience; Volcanogenic halogens, in particular bromine, potentially play an important role in the ozone depletion of the atmosphere. Understanding bromine behaviour in magmas is therefore crucial to properly evaluate the contribution of volcanic eruptions to atmospheric chemistry and their environmental impact. To date, bromine partitioning between silicate melts and the gas phase is very poorly constrained, with the only relevant experimental studies limited to investigation of synthetic melt with silicic compositions. In this study, fluid/melt partitioning experiments were performed using natural silicate glasses with mafic, intermediate and silicic compositions. For each composition, experiments were run with various Br contents in the initial fluid (H2O–NaBr), at T–P conditions representative of shallow magmatic reservoirs in volcanic arc contexts (100–200 MPa, 900–1200 °C). The resulting fluid/melt partition coefficients (DBrf/m) are: 5.0 ± 0.3 at 1200 °C–100 MPa for the basalt, 9.1 ± 0.6 at 1060 °C–200 MPa for the andesite and 20.2 ± 1.2 at 900 °C–200 MPa for the rhyodacite. Our experiments show that DBrf/m increases with increasing SiO2 content of the melt (as for chlorine) and suggest that it is also sensitive to melt temperature (increase of DBrf/m with decreasing temperature). We develop a simple model to predict the S–Cl–Br degassing behaviour in mafic systems, which accounts for the variability of S–Cl–Br compositions of volcanic gases from Etna and other mafic systems, and shows that coexisting magmatic gas and melt evolve from S-rich to Cl–Br enriched (relative to S) upon increasing degree of degassing. We also report first Br contents for melt inclusions from Etna, Stromboli, Merapi and Santorini eruptions and calculate the mass of bromine available in the magma reservoir prior to the eruptions under consideration. The discrepancy that we highlight between the mass of Br in the co-existing melt and fluid prior to the Merapi 2010 eruption (433 and 73 tons, respectively) and the lack of observed BrO (from space) hints at the need to investigate further Br speciation in ‘ash-rich’ volcanic plumes. Overall, our results suggest that the Br yield into the atmosphere of cold and silicic magmas will be much larger than that from hotter and more mafic magmas.

An enigmatic chloride-rich iron (oxyhydr)oxide has been recently identified together with mercury anomalies in End-Cretaceous marine sediments coeval with the Deccan Traps eruptions. The mineral was observed in Bidart (France) and Gubbio (Italy), suggesting a widespread phenomenon. However, the exact nature and origin of this Cl-bearing mineral remained speculative. Here, we characterized the accurate composition and nanostructure of this chloride-rich phase by using micro-Raman spectroscopy, Transmission (TEM) and Scanning (SEM) Electron Microscopy on Focused Ion Beam foils. We also provide new evidence of its occurrence in Zumaia, a reference KPg section from Spain. Results confirm akaganéite (β-FeOOH) as the main phase, with chloride content of 3–5 atomic weight %. Akaganéite particles are constituted by the aggregation of nanorods of akaganéite. Internal structures contain empty spaces, suggesting formation in a low-density (atmospheric) environment. This new mineralogical evidence supports the hypothesis that the observed akaganéite was formed in the Deccan volcanic plume and was transported to the Atlantic and Tethysian realms through the stratosphere. Therefore, akaganéite provides a potential new sedimentary marker to identify the imprint of the Deccan eruptions in the stratigraphic record and is evidence of volcanic halogen degassing and its potential role for the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction.

Caldera-forming eruptions of island volcanoes generate tsunamis by the interaction of different eruptive phenomena with the sea. Such tsunamis are a major hazard, but forward models of their impacts are limited by poor understanding of source mechanisms. The caldera-forming eruption of Santorini in the Late Bronze Age is known to have been tsunamigenic, and caldera collapse has been proposed as a mechanism. Here, we present bathymetric and seismic evidence showing that the caldera was not open to the sea during the main phase of the eruption, but was flooded once the eruption had finished. Inflow of water and associated landsliding cut a deep, 2.0–2.5 km3, submarine channel, thus filling the caldera in less than a couple of days. If, as at most such volcanoes, caldera collapse occurred syn-eruptively, then it cannot have generated tsunamis. Entry of pyroclastic flows into the sea, combined with slumping of submarine pyroclastic accumulations, were the main mechanisms of tsunami production., The Bronze Age eruption of Santorini is known to have generated tsunamis with caldera collapse as the likely mechanism. However, new bathymetric and seismic data presented by Nomikou et al. show that the entry of pyroclastic flows into the sea is the most likely tsunami-generating mechanism at Santorini.

Volcanic sulfate aerosol is emitted from the vents of many active volcanoes, but its origin has not yet been explained. We report the first measurements of the isotopic compositions of near-vent volcanic aerosol sulfate and use the combined sulfur and oxygen isotope systemics of the aerosol and magma at Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, to draw preliminary conclusions about the production mechanism of near-source volcanic sulfate. The sulfate aerosol does not display a significant mass-independent oxygen or sulfur isotopic signature, which suggests that primary volcanic aerosol does not contribute to the larger mass-independent anomalies found in some ambient atmospheric aerosols and as preserved in ice cores. The oxygen isotope composition of the sulfate appeared to become heavier on the particle filters with increasing amount of sample collected and suggests that the δ18O value of the sulfate aerosol is < 8‰. The sy=ulfur isotopic composition of the sulfate did not vary with sample loading on the filters and had a mean δ34S value of 7.7 ± 0.8‰, similar to that of the magma (6.6 ± 0.2‰). The low Δ17O value, the δ18O value of the magma (6.6 ± 0.3‰) and the high δ18O value of atmospheric oxygen (23.5‰) suggest that known atmospheric oxidation pathways at ambient temperatures are not the major routes of production for this sulfate. Instead the isotopic systematics of aerosol and magma are consistent with sulfate production either by high-temperature equilibrium of the magmatic gas mixture with small amounts of atmospheric oxygen or by direct emission of SO₄²⁻ from the magma.

Two basaltic glass samples have been studied, one from the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua and one from the Villarrica volcano in Chile using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The iron(II) to iron(III) ratio has been determined for each sample. The halogens (F, Cl, Br, I) form an important suite of tracers of igneous processes, and may be used to track magmas from their point of origin, through their differentiation, evolution, saturation in vapour and escape to the Earth's atmosphere and hydrosphere. This review summarises the current state of the field, starting with an analysis of what is, and what is not, known about the distribution of halogens in Earth's interior reservoirs, and the principal controls on their behaviour during partial melting, crystallisation and degassing. With recent advances in measurement techniques, there is now a new opportunity to improve the inventories of halogen emissions from the open-vent, continuously-degassing systems that dominate the background contribution of volcanoes to the atmosphere. The different approaches to estimating the fluxes of HCl and HF to the atmosphere from arc and global volcanism are converging, and can now be used to place important constraints on the global cycling of halogens through subduction-zone systems. Arc-related volcanic emissions of halogens dominate the global halogen degassing budgets. Our current best estimates of halogen degassing fluxes from arc volcanoes are 4.3 (± 1) Tg/a (HCl), 0.5 (± 0.2) Tg/a (HF), 5-15 Gg/a (HBr) and 0.5-2 Gg/a (HI). © 2008 Elsevier B.V. An understanding of the influence of anthropogenic and natural point sources of pollution on the compositions of distant airmasses requires the careful collection of atmospheric composition data over extended periods of time. Equally, a proper understanding of the influence of megacities, biomass burning plumes and persistent volcanic emissions on the oxidising capacity of the atmosphere requires analysis of the downstream fate of their associated gas and aerosol plumes. Marquez et al. (2005) recently presented some interesting data on the compositions of ambient atmospheric gases and particles at a sampling site in Mexico (Pico de Orizaba National Park, elevation 3300 m; Fig. 1) in late February and early March 2001. Two notable features of their data were the high concentrations of SO2 (mean value 14 ppb) and particulate sulphate (mean 5 μg m−3). The authors ascribed these features to the arrival of air from urban sources nearby, either Mexico City (200 km to the west, elevation 2240 m) or Puebla City (70 km to the west, elevation 2160 m). However, airmass parcels which arrive at the sampling location from either Mexico City, or Puebla, are likely to have passed close to the active volcano of Popocatepetl, 160 km from the sampling endpoint (Fig. 1). In their original paper, Marquez et al. (2005) dismissed any possible volcanic influence on their sampling on the basis of the absence of any volcanic (ash) plume visible in AVHRR weather satellite data. However, Popocatepetl, like many volcanoes, is a prodigious source of reactive gas and aerosol even in the absence of any visible ash plumes. ‘Passively’ degassing volcanoes are becoming increasingly well known as major contributors to the tropospheric gas and aerosol burden, and in particular that of SO2, sulphate and other particles

The impact of volcanic emissions, especially from passive degassing and minor explosions, is a source of uncertainty in estimations of aerosol indirect effects. Observations of the impact of volcanic aerosol on clouds contribute to our understanding of both present-day atmospheric properties and of the pre-industrial baseline necessary to assess aerosol radiative forcing. We present systematic measurements over several years at multiple active and inactive volcanic islands in regions of low present-day aerosol burden. The time-averaged indirect aerosol effects within 200 km downwind of island volcanoes are observed using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, 2002–2013) and Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR, 2002–2008) data. Retrievals of aerosol and cloud properties at Kīlauea (Hawai'i), Yasur (Vanuatu) and Piton de la Fournaise (la Réunion) are rotated about the volcanic vent to be parallel to wind direction, so that upwind and downwind retrievals can be compared. The emissions from all three volcanoes – including those from passive degassing, Strombolian activity and minor explosions – lead to measurably increased aerosol optical depth downwind of the active vent. Average cloud droplet effective radius is lower downwind of the volcano in all cases, with the peak difference ranging from 2–8 μm at the different volcanoes in different seasons. Estimations of the difference in Top of Atmosphere upward Short Wave flux upwind and downwind of the active volcanoes from NASA's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) suggest a downwind elevation of between 10 and 45 Wm−2 at distances of 150–400 km from the volcano, with much greater local (< 80 km) effects. Comparison of these observations with cloud properties at isolated islands without degassing or erupting volcanoes suggests that these patterns are not purely orographic in origin. Our observations of unpolluted, isolated marine settings may capture processes similar to those in the pre-industrial marine atmosphere.

Global arc magmatism is sustained by a continuous fluid flux that is returned to the mantle in subduction zones. Despite considerable advances in simulations of melting processes, models of arc magmatism remain incompletely tested against erupted products. Here, we show that a suite of primitive volcanic rocks from across the southern Chilean arc preserves the signature of a systematic down-slab gradient in fluid chemistry. The chemical gradient is consistent with predictions from modeling, geothermometry and experiments. We infer that increasing slab-surface temperatures cause the sub-arc slab flux to become less water-rich and increasingly dominated by hydrous melts over a distance of a few kilometers behind the arc front. This change exerts a first-order control on magma chemistry, and implies discrete melt-transport pathways through subduction zones. Our results replicate patterns in other arcs, implying common sub-arc slab-surface temperature ranges in thermally-diverse subduction zones. © 2013 American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved.

Mercury is a highly volatile, bioaccumulating toxic trace metal with a long (∼1yr) atmospheric residence time. Hg is strongly enriched in volcanic emanations, and volcanoes are the only natural sources of direct Hg emission to the free troposphere and stratosphere. However, there is considerable uncertainty over the annual emission rate of mercury from volcanoes. Previous estimates, based on limited measurements from volcanic plumes, span three orders of magnitude (∼100-103MgHg/yr), or from 103Mg) explosive eruptions overwhelm the total atmospheric burden several times per century, and account for ∼15% of total volcanic Hg emissions. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. The major explosive eruption of Charten volcano, Chile, in May 2008 provided a rare opportunity to track the long-range dispersal and deposition of fine volcanic ash. The eruption followed ~ 10,000 years of quiescence, was the largest explosive eruption globally since Hudson, Chile, in 1991, and was the first explosive rhyolitic eruption since Novarupta, Alaska, in 1912. Field examination of distal ashfall indicates that ~1.6 x 1011 kg of ash (dense rock equivalent volume of ~0.07 km3) was deposited over ~2 x 105 km2 of Argentina during the first week of eruption. The minimum eruption magnitude, estimated from the mass of the tephra deposit, is 4.2. Several discrete ashfall units are identifiable from their distribution and grain size characteristics, with more energetic phases showing a bimodal size distribution and evidence of cloud aggregation processes. Ash chemistry was uniform throughout the early stages of eruption and is consistent with magma storage prior to eruption at depths of 3-6 km. Deposition of ash over a continental region allowed the tracking of eruption development and demonstrates the potential complexity of tephra dispersal from a single eruption, which in this case comprised several phases over a week-long period of intense activity. Seismic activity has been postulated as a trigger of volcanic eruption on a range of timescales, but demonstrating the occurrence of triggered eruptions on timescales beyond a few days has proven difficult using global datasets. Here, we use the historic earthquake and eruption records of Chile and the Andean southern volcanic zone to investigate eruption rates following large earthquakes. We show a significant increase in eruption rate following earthquakes of MW > 8, notably in 1906 and 1960, with similar occurrences further back in the record. Eruption rates are enhanced above background levels for ~ 12 months following the 1906 and 1960 earthquakes, with the onset of 3-4 eruptions estimated to have been seismically influenced in each instance. Eruption locations suggest that these effects occur from the near-field to distances of ~ 500 km or more beyond the limits of the earthquake rupture zone. This suggests that both dynamic and static stresses associated with large earthquakes are important in eruption-triggering processes and have the potential to initiate volcanic eruption in arc settings over timescales of several months. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Santorini Volcano, the site of the catastrophic Minoan eruption in Greece, exhibits two distinct eruptive styles: small, effusive eruptions occur relatively frequently and build shields and domes of lava, whereas large explosive eruptions occur rarely, at intervals of 10,000-30,000 years. Both types of eruption were thought to incubate in a shallow magma chamber that is continually charged by small batches of melt injected into the chamber from below. However, petrological work suggests that at least 15% of the material ejected during the Minoan explosive eruption arrived in the magma chamber less than 100 years before the eruption. Here we use Satellite Radar Interferometry (InSAR) and Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of surface deformation at Santorini to show that 10-20 million m 3 of magma have been intruded beneath the volcano since January 2011. This volume is equivalent to 10-50% of the volumes of recorded dome-forming eruptions. GPS and triangulation data show that this is the only volumetrically significant intrusion to have occurred since 1955, shortly after the last eruption. Our observations imply that whether Santorini is in an explosive or dome-forming phase, its shallow magma chamber is charged episodically by high-flux batches of magma. The durations of these events are short in comparison with the intervening periods of repose and their timing is controlled by the dynamics of deeper magma reservoirs.

article i nfo Establishing a time series of deformation is one of the keys to understanding and predicting the magmatic behaviour of active volcanoes. Satellite techniques represent an increasingly useful tool for measuring volcanic deformation over timescales spanning days to decades. Colombia contains numerous young or active volcanoes, many of which are inaccessible. We use L-band (23.6 cm wavelength) radar data acquired between 2006 and 2009, to survey 15 active volcanoes along the Colombian segment of the Northern Volcanic Zone. Analysis of 100 interferograms showed that the majority of volcanoes were not deforming. However, independent interferograms display an average subsidence of 3 cm on the northeast flank of Galeras, coinciding with the January 2008 eruption. We combine InSAR, field measurements and source modelling to determine the origin, size and location of the source of subsidence at Galeras. Our results suggest that this signal was caused by deflation of the magma chamber associated with the January 2008 event. Modelling provides insight into the depth to source (~2 km) and a volume change (−6.5×10 5 m 3 ) which is consistent with that derived from modelling contemporaneous tilts and the volume of material erupted. Previous studies based on various datasets support the existence of a resident/recurring chamber at this location, over a decadal timescale. Our InSAR results corroborate the hypothesis of shallow magma storage beneath Galeras and provide the first piece of evidence that can be linked to a particular eruption.

Lava flows can produce changes in topography on the order of 10s-100s of metres. A knowledge of the resulting volume\ud change provides evidence about the dynamics of an eruption. We present a method to measure topographic changes from the\ud differential InSAR phase delays caused by the height differences between the current topography and a Digital Elevation Model\ud (DEM). This does not require a pre-event SAR image, so it does not rely on interferometric phase remaining coherent during\ud eruption and emplacement. Synthetic tests predicts that we can estimate lava thickness of as little as �9 m, given a minimum of 5\ud interferograms with suitably large orbital baseine separations. In the case of continuous motion, such as lava flow subsidence, we\ud invert interferometric phase simultaneously for topographic change and displacement. We demonstrate the method using data from\ud Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, and measure increases in lava thickness of up to 140 m between 2000 and 2009, largely associated\ud with activity between 2000 and 2005. We find a mean extrusion rate of 0.43 +/- 0.06 m3/s, which lies within the error bounds of\ud the longer term extrusion rate between 1922-2000. The thickest and youngest parts of the flow deposit were shown to be subsiding\ud at an average rate of �-6 cm/yr. This is the first time that flow thickness and subsidence have been measured simultaneously. We\ud expect this method to be suitable for measurment of landslides and other mass flow deposits as well as lava flows.

Volcanic lightning, perhaps the most spectacular consequence of the electrification of volcanic plumes, has been implicated in the origin of life on Earth, and may also exist in other planetary atmospheres. Recent years have seen volcanic lightning detection used as part of a portfolio of developing techniques to monitor volcanic eruptions. Remote sensing measurement techniques have been used to monitor volcanic lightning, but surface observations of the atmospheric electric Potential Gradient (PG) and the charge carried on volcanic ash also show that many volcanic plumes, whilst not sufficiently electrified to produce lightning, have detectable electrification exceeding that of their surrounding environment. Electrification has only been observed associated with ash-rich explosive plumes, but there is little evidence that the composition of the ash is critical to its occurrence. Different conceptual theories for charge generation and separation in volcanic plumes have been developed to explain the disparate observations obtained, but the ash fragmentation mechanism appears to be a key parameter. It is unclear which mechanisms or combinations of electrification mechanisms dominate in different circumstances. Electrostatic forces play an important role in modulating the dry fall-out of ash from a volcanic plume. Beyond the local electrification of plumes, the higher stratospheric particle concentrations following a large explosive eruption may affect the global atmospheric electrical circuit. It is possible that this might present another, if minor, way by which large volcanic eruptions affect global climate. [1] Direct-sampling and remote-sensing measurements were made at the crater rim of Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) to sample the aerosol plume emanating from the active vent. We report the first measurements of the size distribution of fine silicate particles (d < 10 μm) in Masaya's plume, by automated scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) analysis of a particle filter. The particle size distribution was approximately lognormal with modal d ∼ 1.15 μm. The majority of these particles were found to be spherical. These particles are interpreted to be droplets of quenched magma produced by a spattering process. Compositional analyses confirm earlier reports that the fine silicate particles show a range of compositions between that of the degassing magma and nearly pure silica and that the extent of compositional variability decreases with increasing particle size. These results indicate that fine silicate particles are altered owing to reactions with acidic droplets in the plume. The emission flux of fine silicate particles was estimated as ∼1011 s-1, equivalent to ∼55 kg d-1. Sun photometry, aerosol spectrometry, and thermal precipitation were used to determine the overall particle size distribution of the plume (0.01 < d(μm) < 10). Sun photometry and aerosol spectrometry measurements indicate the presence of a large number of particles (assumed to be aqueous) with d ∼ 1 μm. Aerosol spectrometry measurements further show an increase in particle size as the nighttime approached. The emission flux of particles from Masaya was estimated as ∼1017 s-1, equivalent to ∼5.5 Mg d-1 where d < 4 μm. Copyright 2009 by the American Geophysical Union.

We report measurements of Hg, SO2, and halogens (HCl, HBr, HI) in volcanic gases from Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, and gaseous SO2 and halogens from Telica volcano, Nicaragua. Mercury measurements were made with a Lumex 915+ portable mercury vapor analyzer and gold traps, while halogens, CO2 and S species were monitored with a portable multi gas sensor and filter packs. Lumex Hg concentrations in the plume were consistently above background and ranged up to 350 ng m-3. Hg/SO2 mass ratios measured with the real-time instruments ranged from 1.1 × 10-7 to 3.5 × 10-5 (mean 2 × 10-5). Total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations measured by gold trap ranged from 100 to 225 ng m-3. Reactive gaseous mercury accounted for 1% of TGM, while particulate mercury was 5% of the TGM. Field measurements of Masaya's SO2 flux, combined with the Hg/SO2 ratio, indicate a Hg flux from Masaya of 7.2 Mg a-1. At Masaya's low temperature famaroles, Hg/CO2 mass ratios were consistently around 2 × 10-8, lower than observed in the main vent (Hg/C02 ∼ 10-7). Low-temperature fumarole Hg fluxes from Masaya are insignificant (∼150 g a-1). Ratios of S, C and halogen species were also measured at Masaya and Telica volcanoes. CO2/ SO2 ratios at Masaya ranged from 2.8 to 3.9, comparable to previously published values. At Masaya molar Br/SO2 was 3 × 10-4 and I/SO2 was 2 × 10-5, suggesting fluxes of 0.2-0.5 Mg HBr d-1 and 0.02-0.05 Mg HI d-1. At Telica the Br/SO2 ratio was also 3 × 10-4 and the I/SO2 ratio was 5.8 × 10-5, with corresponding fluxes of 0.2 Mg HBr d-1 and 0.06 Mg HI d-1. Gases at both volcanoes are enriched in I relative to Br and Cl, compared to gases from volcanoes elsewhere. Copyright 2008 by the American Geophysical Union.

Analyses of air, water and vegetation samples collected in June 2008 offer new insights into the environmental effects of the May 2008 Chaitén eruption on Argentina, which was subject to significant ashfall between 42°S and 46°S. Results from air filtration in the ash-affected town of Esquel (with samples analysed by gravimetry and scanning electron microscopy) show the total mass of resuspended ash in the air is well-correlated with traffic activity. However, this variation is primarily related to varying amounts of the largest particles, with little variation in the amounts of fine ash particles (i.e., d < 4 μm). This result suggests that the hazard associated with resuspended ash remains high even when traffic activity is low and the air is not visibly dusty. We estimate PM2.5 ∼ 200 μg m- 3, PM4 ∼ 300 μg m- 3 and PM10 ∼ 1000 μg m- 3; these concentrations far exceed WHO air quality guidelines and likely persisted for several months. Results from water and vegetation sampling (with samples analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and ion chromatography) indicate that ashfall resulted in significant compositional changes in ephemeral lakes and coirón grass (Festuca pallescens). For B, Cd, Zn, Tl, Cu and Ni, there are strong linear correlations between concentrations and ash thickness (where > 2 mm) in both datasets. These results suggest that the eruption of Chaitén led to significant changes in the concentrations of trace volatile elements within the environment. Analysis of vegetation samples collected in January 2009 indicates that the elevated element concentrations in coirón grass persisted for < 8 months. We report Pb concentrations and isotopic compositions measured in plume aerosol and Pele's hair (lava) samples collected from Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, to provide the first data pertaining to Pb emissions from the Central American volcanic arc. Lead isotopic compositions, determined by Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry, in the Pele's hair samples were found to be 206Pb/ 207Pb∼1.196, 208Pb/207Pb∼2.46 and 206Pb/204Pb∼18.6. Mean Pb fluxes from Masaya were calculated to be 1.0ton Pbyr-1 with a mean plume Pb/S (gas) ratio of 1.3×10-5. Also, it was found that the majority of Pb emitted was present in the fine aerosol (

EnVision is an ambitious but low-risk response to ESA's call for a medium-size mission opportunity for a launch in 2022. Venus is the planet most similar to Earth in mass, bulk properties and orbital distance, but has evolved to become extremely hostile to life. EnVision's 5-year mission objectives are to determine the nature of and rate of change caused by geological and atmospheric processes, to distinguish between competing theories about its evolution and to help predict the habitability of extrasolar planets. Three instrument suites will address specific surface, atmosphere and ionosphere science goals. The Surface Science Suite consists of a 2.2 m 2 radar antenna with Interferometer, Radiometer and Altimeter operating modes, supported by a complementary IR surface emissivity mapper and an advanced accelerometer for orbit control and gravity mapping. This suite will determine topographic changes caused by volcanic, tectonic and atmospheric processes at rates as low as 1 mm a -1. The Atmosphere Science Suite consists of a Doppler LIDAR for cloud top altitude, wind speed and mesospheric structure mapping, complemented by IR and UV spectrometers and a spectrophotopolarimeter, all designed to map the dynamic features and compositions of the clouds and middle atmosphere to identify the effects of volcanic and solar processes. The Ionosphere Science Suite uses a double Langmiur probe and vector magnetometer to understand the behaviour and long-term evolution of the ionosphere and induced magnetosphere. The edifice of Yate volcano, a dissected stratocone in the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone, has experienced multiple summit collapses throughout postglacial time restricted to sectors NE and SW of the summit. The largest such historic event occurred on 19th February 1965 when ∼6.1-10×106m3 of rock and ice detached from 2,000-m elevation to the SW of the summit and transformed into a debris flow. In the upper part of the flow path, velocities are estimated to have reached 40 m s-1. After travelling 7,500 m and descending 1,490 m, the flow entered an intermontane lake, Lago Cabrera. A wavemaker of estimated volume 9±3×106 m3 generated a tsunami with an estimated amplitude of 25 m and a run-up of ∼60 m at the west end of the lake where a settlement disappeared with the loss of 27 lives. The landslide followed 15 days of unusually heavy summer rain, which may have caused failure by increasing pore water pressure in rock mechanically weathered through glacial action. The preferential collapse directions at Yate result from the volcano's construction on the dextral strike-slip Liquiñe-Ofqui fault zone. Movement on the fault during the lifetime of the volcano is thought to have generated internal instabilities in the observed failure orientations, at ∼10̊ to the fault zone in the Riedel shear direction. This mechanically weakened rock may have led to preferentially orientated glacial valleys, generating a feedback mechanism with collapse followed by rapid glacial erosion, accelerating the rate of incision into the edifice through repeated landslides. Debris flows with magnitudes similar to the 1965 event are likely to recur at Yate, with repeat times of the order of 102 years. With a warming climate, increased glacial meltwater due to snowline retreat and increasing rain, at the expense of snow, may accelerate rates of edifice collapse, with implications for landslide hazard and risk at glaciated volcanoes, in particular those in strike-slip tectonic settings where orientated structural instabilities may exist. © Springer-Verlag 2008.
