Abstract

Several decades after the invention of the rechargeable Li‐ion battery, countless innovations from both the research and industry communities have led to placing the secondary battery at the heart of the electrification revolution in recent years. Mathematical and numerical models have been trusted companions in advancing the technology to help guide design improvements or to gain insight when physical measurements are impossible to perform. Starting with the breakthrough porous electrode theory (PET) model proposed by Newman and co‐workers in 1975 (Newman and Tiedemann, AIChE Journal, 1975, 21, 25–41), many authors have improved the formulation from a variety of perspectives. The novel aspects of the model we propose in this paper expand on this long stream of PET formulations and aim to address modeling needs that, to the authors' knowledge, have not been yet considered. The proposed formulation is characterized by the following concurrent features: (1) a full 3D description of the macroscale behavior and 1D microscale in spherical coordinates (Pseudo 4D formulation [P4D]) accounting for geometric details of the cell architecture such as imperfect spiral jellyrolls in cylindrical cells; (2) multiple concurrent particle chemistries to model the microscale lithiation/delithiation behavior at every macroscale element integration point, leading to a multiscale (FE2$$ {\mathrm{FE}}^2 $$) approach; (3) a fully coupled thermal‐electrochemical‐mechanical stress interaction due to lithiation/delithiation induced swelling and external confinement; (4) spatially‐dependent porosity evolutions due to swelling of the particles in the porous electrodes; (5) electrolyte flow in the porous regions and overfill spaces via Darcy‐based flow including partial saturation of the active regions; (6) detailed descriptions of individual battery components such as the electrodes, separator, and current collectors with the possibility of "connecting" the different components through contact definitions; (7) fully linearized macro‐microscale coupling behavior allowing for large time increments in an implicit time integration scheme for a scalable and computationally effective numerical solution. A number of numerical examples including validation against experimental data are performed to demonstrate the predictive power of the proposed model and its efficiency for industrial applications. Abstract

Funding for open access publishing: Universidad de Granada/CBUA., The main aim of the present work is to investigate the role of the Maxwell stress tensor in the study of active materials. Despite the importance of this tensor in modeling mechatronic devices used in sophisticated applications, its non-symmetry still generates controversies in the literature, probably because classical continuum mechanics assumes a symmetric Cauchy stress, although the sum of Cauchy and Maxwell stresses is non-symmetric. In the framework of generalised continuum mechanics-a more advanced formalism than the classical one-, each material point has an associated microstructure so that the micro-rotations of the electric/magnetic dipoles present in real active materials may be simulated. To this end, a modified total stress formulation, including an angular momentum balance, is developed and implemented into a finite element research code using a complex-step formulation. It is concluded that generalised mechanics allows for incorporating both symmetric and non-symmetric contributions of the Maxwell tensor. Consequently, the rotations generated by the electromagnetic field may be analysed. The influence of the complete Maxwell tensor in a magnetostrictive actuator is studied by several magneto-mechanical numerical experiments of a Terfenol-D rod encircled by air, and several conclusions are highlighted., Universidad de Granada/CBUA

28. MHCY haplotype impacts Campylobacter jejuni colonization in a backcross [(Line 61 x Line N) x Line N] population:Research Note

Abstract

MHCY is a candidate region for influencing immune responses in chickens. MHCY contains multiple specialized, polymorphic MHC class I loci along with loci belonging to 4 additional gene families. In this study, MHCY haplotypes were tested for association with cecal colonization after Campylobacter jejuni infection of a backcross [(Line 61 × Line N) × Line N] population derived from 2 White Leghorn research lines, Line 61 and Line N, that were previously shown to exhibit heritable differences in colonization. Samples were obtained for 51 birds challenged with 108 CFU Campylobacter jejuni at 3 wk of age. Viable C. jejuni in the ceca were enumerated 5 d postinfection and counts were log-transformed for analysis. Birds were assigned to either low or high colonization groups based on the individual count being below or above the mean bacterial count for all birds. The mean bacterial count of the low infection group differed significantly from the high infection group. Sex and MHCB haplotype had similar distributions within the 2 groups. Overall, 7 MHCY haplotypes were found to be segregating. Two were significantly associated with C. jejuni colonization. MHCY Y18 was associated with low colonization (P = 3.00 × 10-5); whereas MHCY Y11a was associated with high colonization (P = 0.008). The MHCY haplotype impacted the mean bacterial count among all birds with MHCY Y18 having the lowest bacterial count compared with MHCY Y11a and all other MHCY (Y5, Y7, Y8, Y11b, and Y11c) haplotypes. These findings support further investigation of the contribution of chicken MHCY in resistance to Campylobacter colonization.

30. Institutional Funding of Higher Education in Australia. AIR 1991 Annual Forum Paper.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relative funding model developed as part of the reorganization resulting from the 1988 Australian Government's White Paper on Higher Education Policy. This reorganization created the Unified National System which has resulted in fewer but larger higher education institutions. The relative funding model is described in terms of its origins and principles, including: objectivity, simplicity, fairness, relative funding, applicability to total operating grants, relationship to direct costs, teaching and research components, discipline cost clusters, tolerance band, and special factors. The model's teaching and research components are then explained in more detail. Application of the model at the Footscray Institute of Technology (Victoria, Australia) is detailed, including tables using student load as the basis of resource distribution and planned course enrollment as the measure of student load.
