Ammonia and hydrogen are promoted as potential energy carriers for centralized energy restitution. This article investigates ammonia/hydrogen/air premixed turbulent combustion, using Large-Eddy Simulations, in an academic atmospheric gas turbine swirled burner. A one-dimensional flame analysis demonstrates the existence of a trade-off in NOX and NH3 emissions for ammonia/hydrogen blends, and the possibility to obtain 1D flame propagation characteristics close to that of a lean methane flame by adjusting the amount of H2. Large-Eddy Simulations of the PRECCINSTA burner exhibit stable combustion, while the optimized trade-off equivalence ratio is pinpointed at φ=1.46 for XH2Fuel=0.46. Corresponding emissions are XNOX≈XNH3≈300 ppmv. Large amounts of hydrogen are found in the exhaust gases, inducing a low combustion efficiency. The flame structure, combustion dynamics, influence of kinetics modelling and mesh resolution are discussed. Methane/hydrogen combustion represents a concrete solution for the energy scenario to come. Indeed, the addition of hydrogen into the natural gas pipeline is one of the solutions foreseen to reduce CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, the replacement of methane by hydrogen will enhance the reactivity of the system, increasing NOx emissions. To overcome this issue, non-conventional combustion technologies, such as flameless combustion represent an attractive solution. This study aims to improve our understanding of the behaviour of methane/hydrogen blends under flameless conditions by means of experiments and simulations. Several experimental campaigns were conducted to test fuel flexibility for different methane/hydrogen blends, varying the injector geometries, equivalence ratio and dilution degree. It was found that a progressive addition of hydrogen in methane enhanced the combustion features, reducing the ignition delay time and loosing progressively the flameless behaviour of the furnace. Reducing the air injector diameter or increasing the fuel lance length were found to be efficient techniques to reduce the maximum temperature of the system and NOx emissions in the exhausts, reaching values below 30 ppm for pure hydrogen. MILD conditions were achieved up to 75%H2 in molar fraction, with no visible flame structures. Additionally, RANS-based simulations were also conducted to shed further light on the effect of adding hydrogen into the fuel blend. A sensitivity study was conducted for three different fuel blends: pure methane, an equimolar blend and pure hydrogen. The effect of chemistry detail, mixing models, radiation modeling and turbulence models on in-flame temperatures and NOx emissions was also studied. In particular, it was found that the usage of detailed chemistry for NOx, coupled with an adjustment of the PaSR model, filled the gap between experiments and predictions. Paper is a complex material consisting of a network of cellulose fibres at the micro-level. During manufacturing, the network is dried under restraint conditions due to tension in the paper web in machine direction. This gives rise to internal strains that are stored in the produced sheet. Upon exposure to a moisture cycle, these strains may be released. This results in permanent shrinkage that may cause instabilities such as curl or waviness of the sheet. The prime objective of this paper is to model this irreversible shrinkage and to link its magnitude to the properties of the fibres and of the network. For this purpose, randomly generated fibrous networks of different coverages (i.e. ratio of the area occupied by fibres and that of the sheet) are modeled by means of a periodic representative volume element (RVE). Within such RVEs, a finite element method combined with a kinematic hardening plasticity model at the scale of the fibres is used to capture the irreversible response. The computational results obtained demonstrate that the magnitude of the irreversible strains increases with coverage until a certain coverage and beyond that coverage decreases in magnitude. This phenomenon is explained by considering the area fraction of free-standing fibre segments relative to bonded fibre segments in the network. Mutualistic associations between insects and heritable bacterial symbionts are ubiquitous in nature. The aphid symbiont Serratia symbiotica is a valuable candidate for studying the evolution of bacterial symbiosis in insects because it includes a wide diversity of strains that reflect the diverse relationships in which bacteria can be engaged with insects, from pathogenic interactions to obligate intracellular mutualism. The recent discovery of culturable strains, which are hypothesized to resemble the ancestors of intracellular strains, provide an opportunity to study the mechanisms underlying bacterial symbiosis in its early stages. In this study, we analyzed the genomes of three of these culturable strains that are pathogenic to aphid hosts, and performed comparative genomic analyses including mutualistic host-dependent strains. All three genomes are larger than those of the host-restricted S. symbiotica strains described so far, and show significant enrichment in pseudogenes and mobile elements, suggesting that these three pathogenic strains are in the early stages of the adaptation to their host. Compared to their intracellular mutualistic relatives, the three strains harbor a greater diversity of genes coding for virulence factors and metabolic pathways, suggesting that they are likely adapted to infect new hosts and are a potential source of metabolic innovation for insects. The presence in their genomes of secondary metabolism gene clusters associated with the production of antimicrobial compounds and phytotoxins supports the hypothesis that S. symbiotia symbionts evolved from plant-associated strains and that plants may serve as intermediate hosts. Mutualistic associations between insects and bacteria are the result of independent transitions to endosymbiosis initiated by the acquisition of environmental progenitors. In the presence of temperature gradients along the gas-liquid interface, a liquid bridge is prone to hydrothermal instabilities. In the case of a coaxial gas stream, in addition to buoyancy and thermocapillary forces, the shear stresses and interfacial heat transfer affect the development of these instabilities. By combining experimental data with three-dimensional numerical simulations, we examine the evolution of hydrothermal waves in a liquid bridge with with a gas flow parallel to the interface. The gas moves from the cold to the hot side with a constant velocity of and its temperature is the main control parameter of the study. When the thermal stress exceeds a critical value, a three-dimensional oscillatory flow occurs in the system. A stability window of steady flow has been found to exist in the map of dynamical states in terms of gas temperature and applied thermal stress. The study is carried out by tracking the evolution of hydrothermal waves with increasing gas temperature along three distinct paths with constant values of: Path 1 is selected to be just above the threshold of instability while path 2 traverses the stability window and path 3 lies above it. We observe a variety of dynamics including standing and travelling waves, determine their dominant and secondary azimuthal wavenumbers, and suggest the mathematical equations describing hydrothermal waves. Dip coating is a common technique used to cover a solid surface with a thin liquid film, the thickness of which was successfully predicted by the theory developed in the 1940s by Landau & Levich (Acta Physicochem. URSS, vol. 17, 1942, pp. 141-153) and Derjaguin (Acta Physicochem. URSS, vol. 20, 1943, pp. 349-352). In this work, we present an extension of their theory to the case where the dipping bath contains two immiscible liquids, one lighter than the other, resulting in the entrainment of two thin films on the substrate. We report how the thicknesses of the coated films depend on the capillary number, on the ratios of the properties of the two liquids and on the relative thickness of the upper fluid layer in the bath. We also show that the liquid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces evolve independently from each other as if only one liquid were coated, except for a very small region where their separation falls quickly to its asymptotic value and the shear stresses at the two interfaces peak. Thermodiffusion, which leads to a component separation in a mixture due to the thermal gradient, still does not have an unambiguous microscopic picture. Therefore, experimental studies, especially in convection free environment, are important. As part of the 4th campaign on the DCMIX project, thermodiffusion experiments on three compositions of the toluene-methanol-cyclohexane ternary mixture, on a mixture of fullerene-tetralin-toluene and on a mixture of polystyrene-toluene-cyclohexane have been performed in microgravity conditions on board the International Space Station. A binary mixture of polystyrene-toluene has been filled into the companion cell for the campaign. The Selectable Optical Diagnostics Instrument (SODI), wich is a two-wavelength Mach-Zehnder interferometer for the ternary mixtures, plus a monochromatic Mach-Zehnder interferometer for the binary mixture, has been used in order to obtain the temperature and the concentration fields in the cells. Precisely, it is a 5-steps phase-shifting interferometry technique which is implemented with SODI, producing by means of laser illumination a set of 5 phase-shifted images of π/2 between them as function of the time. A total of 58 runs of various durations and at different mean temperatures have been conducted. This study aims to valorize chitin polymer from the side stream of an insect farm and to determine the chitin content, and its physicochemical properties obtained from different processing steps in the insect farm (Adult Black Soldier Fly insect, Puparia, and Flake). We used an acid-base method (using 1 M HCl and 1 M NaOH) as a conventional technique and the acid detergent fiber (ADF) with acid detergent lignin (ADL) methods. The chitin samples are then characterized for thermal stability (TGA-DTA), crystallinity (XRD), chemical compounds (FTIR), and C/N content, and the results were compared to the commercial shrimp chitin. The Puparia had the highest chitin content of 21–33%, followed by the Flake 20–28% and the Adult insect with 7–13% chitin, depending on the extraction method. The chitin yield from ADF-ADL method was on par with the conventional method, while the ADF results were approximately 3–10% higher than the ADF-ADL results. Industrial denitrification catalyst monoliths are regularly tested in controlled lab-scale conditions to quantify their activity. As mass transfer phenomena occurring inside the channels of the monoliths have an important impact on the global denitrification kinetics, activity measurements must be conducted in well-known conditions in terms of sample geometry and gaseous flow regimes, among others. The lack of accurate mass transfer correlations for the complex flows at stake however prevents any accurate generalisation of the test results. In this paper, we propose a semi-empirical method for the quantification of contribution of mass transfer to the global denitrification kinetics for any given test bench. It is based on the experimental adjustment of mass transfer correlations presenting a suitable form. Hydrogen chloride is found in important hydrogen gas streams of the chemical industry and needs to be removed for safety and environmental concerns. Here, a systematic study is presented on HCl removal from hydrogen gas by adsorption on zeolites, including cation free and high cation loaded materials, as well as ion-exchanged zeolites (with alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions). When a liquid drop is placed on a highly superheated surface, it can be levitated by its own vapour. This remarkable phenomenon is referred to as the Leidenfrost effect. The thermally insulating vapour film results in a severe reduction of the heat transfer rate compared to experiments at lower surface temperatures, where the drop is in direct contact with the solid surface. A commonly made assumption is that this solid surface is isothermal, which is at least questionable for materials of low thermal conductivity, resulting in an overestimation of the surface temperature and heat transfer for such systems. Here we aim to obtain more quantitative insight into how surface cooling affects the Leidenfrost effect. We develop a technique based on Mach-Zehnder interferometry to investigate the surface cooling of a quartz plate by a Leidenfrost drop. The three-dimensional plate temperature field is reconstructed from interferometric data by an Abel inversion method using a basis function expansion of the underlying temperature field. By this method we are able to quantitatively measure the local cooling inside the plate, which can be as strong as 80 K. We develop a numerical model which shows good agreement with experiments and enables extending the analysis beyond the experimental parameter space. Based on the numerical and experimental results we quantify the effect of surface cooling on the Leidenfrost phenomenon. We analyze 78 case studies that applied an input-output (IO) model for waste management analyses. We categorize all IO models into four types (waste extended IO (WEIO), waste IO (WIO), physical IO (PIO) and hybrid IO (HIO)). We then define each model within a waste analysis framework, and carry out a bibliometric analysis. Our comparative analysis is twofold. Firstly, to compare the models conceptually, we analyze and discuss three characteristics of the models – the units of intersectoral flows, the modelling of waste and the relation with mass balance principle. Secondly, we analyze and discuss six criteria pertaining to the functionalities of the models, – the waste generation accounting, the purpose of the modelling, the geographical scale, the temporal dimension, the coupling of the IO models with other methods and the level of details of waste treatment sectors and waste types. Our findings are fourfold. First, there is increasing interest in assessing waste management policies with IO models; WIO models are the most applied ones, followed by WEIO models; PIO models are the least widely applied. Second, WIO models have the most mature analytical framework, and HIO models are conceptually the most powerful. Third, there is no cause-effect link between the conceptual characteristics and the functionalities of IO models. The IO models have been widely used for diverse applications in waste management at economy-wide level, but there is potential for several other applications. A γ–irradiated bovine albumin serum-based nanoparticle was characterised structurally, and functionally. The nanoparticle was characterised by A.F.M. D.L.S, zeta potential, T.E.M. gel-electrophoresis, and spectroscopy. We studied the stability of the nanoparticle at different pH values and against time, by fluorescence spectroscopy following the changes in the tryptophan environment in the nanoparticle. The nanoparticle was also functionalized with Folic Acid, its function as a nanovehicle was evaluated through its interaction with the hydrophobic drug Emodin. The binding and kinetic properties of the obtained complex were evaluated by biophysical methods as well as its toxicity in tumor cells. According to its biophysics, the nanoparticle is a spherical nanosized vehicle with a hydrodynamic diameter of 70 nm. Data obtained describe the nanoparticle as nontoxic for cancer cell lines. When combined with Emodin, the nanoparticle proved to be more active on MCF-7 cancer cell lines than the nanoparticle without Emodin. Significantly, the albumin aggregate preserves the main activity-function of albumin and improved characteristics as an excellent carrier of molecules. Despite efficient combination of the antiretroviral therapy (cART), which significantly decreased mortality and morbidity of HIV-1 infection, a definitive HIV cure has not been achieved. Hidden HIV-1 in cellular and anatomic reservoirs is the major hurdle toward a functional cure. Microglial cells, the Central Nervous system (CNS) resident macrophages, are one of the major cellular reservoirs of latent HIV-1. These cells are believed to be involved in the emergence of drugs resistance and reseeding peripheral tissues. Moreover, these long-life reservoirs are also involved in the development of HIV-1-associated neurocognitive diseases (HAND). Clearing these infected cells from the brain is therefore crucial to achieve a cure. However, many characteristics of microglial cells and the CNS hinder the eradication of these brain reservoirs. Better understandings of the specific molecular mechanisms of HIV-1 latency in microglial cells should help to design new molecules and new strategies preventing HAND and achieving HIV cure. This paper presents the shunt damping of a unimorph piezoelectric mirror intended to be used as an active secondary corrector in future space telescopes. We propose to take advantage of the actuation capability of the piezoelectric mirror, to increase its natural damping during the critical launch phase of the spacecraft. The piezoelectric actuators, intended to be used for active optics, are shunted on a passive resistive and inductive RL circuit during the launch operation. The proposed concept is verified numerically and experimentally on a piezoelectric deformable mirror prototype, developed on behalf of the European Space Agency. We show that the shunt damping significantly reduces the response of the most critical mode of the mirror (− 23 dB) as well as the stress in the mirror when subjected to a typical vibro-acoustic launch load. Modern cities are growing ecosystems that face new challenges due to the increasing population demands. One of the many problems they face nowadays is waste management, which has become a pressing issue requiring new solutions. Swarm robotics systems have been attracting an increasing amount of attention in the past years and they are expected to become one of the main driving factors for innovation in the field of robotics. The research presented in this paper explores the feasibility of a swarm robotics system in an urban environment. By using bio-inspired foraging methods such as multi-place foraging and stigmergy-based navigation, a swarm of robots is able to improve the efficiency and autonomy of the urban waste management system in a realistic scenario. To achieve this, a diverse set of simulation experiments was conducted using real-world GIS data and implementing different garbage collection scenarios driven by robot swarms. Results presented in this research show that the proposed system outperforms current approaches. The measurement of fluid velocity in the vicinity of wavy interfaces by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) still constitutes a challenge. Besides the experimental complexities such as appropriate seeding, reflections due to gradients in refractive indices, aberrations, etc. also the image processing phase constitutes a critical component. Ignoring bias errors introduced by laser reflections near the interface, strong velocity gradients are typically encountered near the curved liquid/gas interface and are detrimental to the common cross-correlation analysis. These effects are exacerbated by the use of traditional rectangular static cross-correlation windows. Moreover, dynamic boundaries suffer from a certain loss in reliability due to the difference in number of particles located in a specific physical region between the two frames. In this paper we present an improved algorithm enhancing the accuracy of the velocity vector detection in dynamic wavy flows. This algorithm divides the fluid domain in subregions (i.e. bulk, intermediate, vicinity and interface) and applies to each region different features (such as image patching, window relocation and forward difference finite schemes) and ad hoc predictors. Its assessment is performed on the basis of synthetic images, which reproduce a wavy motion similar to the one encountered when fluid in a cylindrical reservoir undergoes sloshing. When juxtaposed with a standard PIV code, numerical errors are shown to strongly diminish while improving the spatial resolution approaching the interface. The Boom Clay is considered as one of the potential host rock formation in Belgium for radioactive waste repository in deep geological layers. Gallery excavations will induce large hydro-mechanical disturbances around disposal system that need to be well understood and characterised. This study discusses particularly the role of interactions between the lining of the galleries and the host formation in the numerical characterisation of excavations in Boom Clay. The excavation and the convergence of the connecting gallery of the HADES underground research facility in Mol is modelled in a hydro-mechanical framework. Zero-thickness interface elements are used to manage numerically the contact between the host rock and the lining. Numerical predictions are compared with strains measurements recorded within the concrete segments of the lining in the underground research laboratory in Mol. A low Young's modulus is required for titanium alloys used in orthopedic implants, such as hip prosthetic stems, in order to avoid stress shielding due to a large difference in Young's modulus between the prosthetic stem and the cortical bone. The low Young's modulus has been observed to occur in metastable β-Ti alloys by precipitation of a stress-induced α″ martensite during cold deformation. Under this context, the Influence of thermo-mechanical processing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the metastable β Ti–29Nb–2Mo–6Zr alloy was studied as well as the influence of the degree of deformation by cold rolling with subsequent annealing after homogenization heat treatment. The alloy presents a β microstructure after solution heat treatment at 1000 °C for 24h, followed by water quenching, while posterior cold rolling induces the precipitation of α” martensite. Young's modulus decreases and hardness increases with the degree of deformation. The annealed samples showed higher hardness and Young's modulus than the cold rolled samples. A thickness reduction of 90% maximizes the hardness/Young's modulus ratio and optimizes the required mechanical properties for orthopedic implants. We consider the response to periodic forcing between 5 Hz and 50 Hz of an interface separating immiscible fluids under the microgravity conditions of a parabolic flight. Two pairs of liquids with viscosity ratios differing by one order of magnitude are investigated. By combining experimental data with numerical simulations, we describe a variety of dynamics including harmonic and subharmonic (Faraday) waves, frozen waves and drop ejection, determining their thresholds and scaling properties when possible. Interaction between these various modes is facilitated in microgravity by the relative ease with which the interface can move, altering its orientation with respect to the forcing axis. The effects of key factors controlling pattern selection are analysed, including vibrational forcing, viscosity ratio, finite-size effects and residual gravity. Complex behaviour often arises with features on several spatial scales, such as Faraday waves excited on the interface of a larger columnar structure that develops due to the frozen wave instability - this type of state was previously seen in miscible fluid experiments but is described for the first time here in the immiscible case., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

In this contribution, we investigate strategies to perform shock-capturing computation of steady hypersonic flow fields by means of residual distribution schemes. The ultimate objective is the computation of flow solutions for which the correct upstream enthalpy value is recovered in the postshock region. To this end, the parallelism existing between the classical Bx scheme and the stabilized finite element techniques is exploited. The simple Lax-Friedrichs dissipation term is leveraged to build two new residual distribution schemes. Upon testing on both inviscid and viscous steady problems, solutions obtained with one of the two schemes are shown to recover the correct upstream total enthalpy level in the postshock region. This last scheme provides also improved wall pressure and skin friction predictions; heat transfer predictions are, unfortunately, similar to those offered by the Bx scheme. Background and aims – The intensive botanical prospections carried out in Gabon since the publication of the national checklist in 2006 have resulted in c. 34 300 new specimens (amounting to 30% of all collections made in the country) and an annual increase of 25 species in average. As a result, 5175 species of vascular plants are now recorded from Gabon, of which 650 are considered endemic. However, most of the recent discoveries have not yet been published. This paper is the first of a series documenting additions to the flora of Gabon, and new records of poorly known species. It concerns specifically new records from the Lower Ogooué Ramsar site, the third largest delta of Africa, and certainly the most intact, which includes 80% of the country’s wetlands and a wide variety of other habitats. Methods – The new records presented here come essentially from fieldwork conducted in Gabon between 2008 and 2016 by the authors and colleagues. Further information comes from the study of herbarium specimens in BR, BRLU, K, LBV, MO, P and WAG. For each species, information on distribution and ecology is given, and the studied Gabonese collections listed. In case of rare or range-restricted species, collections from other countries are also listed, and a distribution map is provided, as well as an evaluation of the conservation status based on the categories and criteria of the IUCN Red List. Key results – We report 18 additions to the flora of Gabon, including four genera new to the country (Capparis, Gisekia, Hoffmanniella and Leptochloa) and the first records of the neotropical Justicia secunda being naturalised in tropical Africa. New distribution records are also provided for 16 rare Gabonese endemics or near-endemics. Some species are also newly reported from Cameroon (Cissus leemansii, Salacia coronata) and Equatorial Guinea (Cissus leemansii, C. louisii, Lychnodiscus grandifolius, Placodiscus resendeanus, Rutidea gabonensis, Uvaria bipindensis). The loss of a ground corner column in a RC frame turns an exterior joint into an inverted knee joint and recent code provisions for exterior joints are not sufficient to knee joints because of reinforcement defects in terms of joint vertical stirrups and improper column bar anchorage. This paper investigates numerically the behaviour of these joints under a closing moment using nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis with LS-DYNA. Beam’s bar anchorage type and joint vertical stirrups are the main parameters considered next to concrete compressive strength, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and lateral beam effect. This study indicates that, anchorage beam’s bar with U shaped produces better behaviour than 90° standard hooks or headed ends. Contribution of joint vertical stirrups is more influential with headed bars anchorage. Increasing concrete compressive strength and beam reinforcement ratio improve joint ultimate capacity. This paper discusses the possibility of using the Mahalanobis squared-distance to perform robust novelty detection in the presence of important environmental variability in a multivariate feature vector. By performing an eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix used to compute that distance, it is shown that the Mahalanobis squared-distance can be written as the sum of independent terms which result from a transformation from the feature vector space to a space of independent variables. In general, especially when the size of the features vector is large, there are dominant eigenvalues and eigenvectors associated with the covariance matrix, so that a set of principal components can be defined. Because the associated eigenvalues are high, their contribution to the Mahalanobis squared-distance is low, while the contribution of the other components is high due to the low value of the associated eigenvalues. This analysis shows that the Mahalanobis distance naturally filters out the variability in the training data. This property can be used to remove the effect of the environment in damage detection, in much the same way as two other established techniques, principal component analysis and factor analysis. The three techniques are compared here using real experimental data from a wooden bridge for which the feature vector consists in eigenfrequencies and modeshapes collected under changing environmental conditions, as well as damaged conditions simulated with an added mass. The results confirm the similarity between the three techniques and the ability to filter out environmental effects, while keeping a high sensitivity to structural changes. The results also show that even after filtering out the environmental effects, the normality assumption cannot be made for the residual feature vector. Beta titanium alloys were developed for biomedical applications due to the combination of its mechanical properties including low elasticity modulus, high strength, fatigue resistance, good ductility and with excellent corrosion resistance. With this perspective a metastable beta titanium alloy Ti-12Mo-13Nb was developed with the replacement of both vanadium and aluminum from the traditional alloy Ti-6Al-4V. This paper presents the microstructure, mechanical properties of the Ti-12Mo-13Nb hot swaged and aged at 500 °C for 24 h under high vacuum and then water quenched. The alloy structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature. The results show a microstructure consisting of a fine dispersed α phase in a β matrix and good mechanical properties including low elastic modulus. This work aims at classifying the road condition with data mining methods using simple acceleration sensors and gyroscopes installed in vehicles. Two classifiers are developed with a support vector machine (SVM) to distinguish between different types of road surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete, and obstacles, such as potholes or railway crossings. From the sensor signals, frequency-based features are extracted, evaluated automatically with MANOVA. The selected features and their meaning to predict the classes are discussed. The best features are used for designing the classifiers. Finally, the methods, which are developed and applied in this work, are implemented in a Matlab toolbox with a graphical user interface. The toolbox visualizes the classification results on maps, thus enabling manual verification of the results. The accuracy of the cross-validation of classifying obstacles yields 81.0% on average and of classifying road material 96.1% on average. The absence of gravity during space flight can alter cardio-vascular functions partially due to reduced physical activity. This affects the overall hemodynamics, and in particular the level of shear stresses to which blood vessels are submitted. Long-term exposure to space environment is thus susceptible to induce vascular remodeling through a mechanotransduction cascade that couples vessel shape and function with the mechanical cues exerted by the circulating cells on the vessel walls. Central to such processes, the glycocalyx – i.e. the micron-thick layer of biomacromolecules that lines the lumen of blood vessels and is directly exposed to blood flow – is a major actor in the regulation of biochemical and mechanical interactions. We discuss in this article several experiments performed under microgravity, such as the determination of lift force and collective motion in blood flow, and some preliminary results obtained in artificial microfluidic circuits functionalized with endothelium that offer interesting perspectives for the study of the interactions between blood and endothelium in healthy condition as well as by mimicking the degradation of glycocalyx caused by long space missions. Metastable β-type Ti alloys with non-toxic addition elements such as Mo, Zr, Sn, Ta and Nb were developed as an alternative to the widely used Ti-6Al-4V alloy for biomedical applications. These alloys possess enhanced biocompatibility and reduced elastic modulus in comparison with Ti-6Al4V. Moreover, for orthopedic implants, low Young's modulus is required in order to avoid the stress shielding phenomenon. This study analyzes the microstructure and mechanical properties of a new Ti-12Mo-8Nb alloy after hot swaging, annealing at 950 ºC for 1h and water quenching. The alloy was characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature. Young's modulus and hardness values were also measured. The structural characterization reveals a metastable β structure containing only a small amount of α and ω phases. Cd1-xZnxS thin films have been studied extensively as window layers for solar cell applications. However, a mismatch between the Cd1-xZnxS and copper-indium-gallium-selenide absorber layers increases with Zn film concentration, which reduces the device eficiency. In this work, Cd1-xZnxS thin films with low Zn concentrations were analyzed. The effect of the addition of different molar Zn concentrations to the reaction mixture on the growth mechanism of Cd1-xZnxS thin films and the influence of these mechanisms on structural, optical and morphological properties of the films has been studied. Cd1-xZnxS thin films were synthesized by chemical bath deposition using an ammonia-free alkaline solution. Microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction showed that all deposited films grew with hexagonal structure and crystallite sizes decreased as the Zn concentration in the film increased. Optical measurements indicated a high optical transmission between 75% and 90% for wavelengths above the absorption edge. Band gap value increased from 2.48 eV to 2.62 eV, and the refractive index values for Cd1-xZnxS thin films decreased as the Zn increased. β-metastable titanium alloys with high strength to Young's modulus ratio have been developed by different authors aiming their use as biomaterials for hard tissue replacement. However, it is not easy to combine low elastic modulus with high mechanical strength. In this work, a β-Ti alloy (Ti-10Mo-20Nb) was produced by arc-melting, then homogenized, cold swaged and aged in order to obtain fine α-Ti precipitates in a β-Ti matrix. The microstructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties characterization was based on Vickers microhardness tests and Young's modulus measurements. Background and aims–Coastal dunes of southern Spain are an original Mediterranean ecosystem, hotspot of biodiversity, insufficiently studied under the functional ecology. We explore co-variation patterns among leaf traits (size, specific leaf area (SLA), nutrient concentrations (N, P, K…), deciduousness and leaf consistence), and growth form in 78 native coastal dune species. Methods–Three coastal dunes of contrasting climatic conditions were sampled and differentiated between fixed and mobile dunes. Species were classified based on growth form, deciduousness and leaf consistence. Leaf samples were collected following Cornelissen et al. (2003) and soil samples were also analysed by ICP-OES and elemental analysis. Key results–Positive co-variation patterns of SLA and leaf [N], and of leaf [N] and leaf [P], were found in two of three sites. Fixed dunes, with a higher proportion of large shrubs, evergreens, and sclerophyllous species, had lower values of SLA and foliar nutrients, and higher values of [C] than mobile dunes. The topsoil of fixed dunes had less [Ca] than in mobile dunes and this was reflected in foliar concentrations. The Mediterranean-subdesert dunes, had a distinct pattern of trait variation. Conclusion–Mediterranean-subdesert coastal dunes are characterized by lower values of leaf [N] and higher values of leaf [Ca] and [Fe] than in other Mediterranean ecosystems and by a broad correlation among SLA, leaf [N], [P] and [K]. Mediterranean-subdesert dunes showed a predominance of xerophytic malacophyllous strategy, whereas Mediterranean -oceanic dunes are dominated by stress tolerant species. Current maintenance of concrete civil infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, dams and highways, is based on scheduled inspection consisting in visual and/or local inspection techniques (i.e. acoustic/ultrasonic methods, radiography, eddy-current methods). A major trend in the field is the development of automated on-line monitoring systems. The current study is focused on the use of ultrasonic wave propagation techniques based on embedded piezoelectric transducers for the online monitoring of the damage state in concrete. The technique is based on the use of an ultrasonic emitter-receiver pair and the construction of a damage indicator focused on the early wave arrival. The proposed simple monitoring system is implemented during several pull-out tests on concrete blocks. We consider the control of distributed systems composed of subsystems communicating asynchronously; the aim is to build local controllers that restrict the behavior of a distributed system in order to satisfy a global state avoidance property. We model our distributed systems as communicating finite state machines with reliable unbounded FIFO queues between subsystems. Local controllers can only observe their proper local subsystems and do not observe the queues. To refine their control policy, they can use the FIFO queues to communicate by piggybacking extra information to the messages sent by the subsystems. We define synthesis algorithms allowing to compute the local controllers. We explain how we can ensure the termination of this control algorithm by using abstract interpretation techniques, to overapproximate queue contents by regular languages. Ti-doped carbon coatings were deposited on TiAlV alloys by reactive dc-magnetron sputtering in Ar/CH4 mixed gas. When Ar flow increases the incorporation of Ti into films raises while the concentration of C decreases. The formed nanometric TiC crystals were more noticeable for coatings deposited with higher Ar flows. Hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) of coatings were measured by nanoindentation. H values were in the range of 8.8-15.9 GPa and E of 53.4-113.7 GPa. Higher values for H and E were obtained for films containing larger amount of TiC-phase. The presence of TiC crystals increased the coefficient of friction (COF) from 0.07 to 0.28 in scratch tests. Tribological experiments were carried out by using a pin-on-disk apparatus in air and in liquid. COF values ranged from 0.10 to 0.50 for tests in air. The dilution is an event that have a high influence on the microstructure and, consequently, in the properties of weld claddings. The present study evaluated the effect of dilution level on the microstructure of the fusion zone of alloy Inconel 686 weld claddings. The claddings were welded by the TIG cold wire feed process. The dilution was calculated from the geometric characteristics and based on chemical composition of the materials obtained by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and optical emission spectroscopy. The microstructure of all claddings were composed by a γ-FCC matrix with some minor precipitates. These particles are called in literature as topologically closed-packed phases (TCP). These precipitates assumed several morphological aspects, being the shapeless morphology observed in more frequency in all claddings evaluated, independent of dilution level. A phase with lamellar morphology, which growth establishing an orientation relationship with the γ-FCC matrix solidification direction, was observed only in claddings with a low dilution level. The viscoelastic behaviour of three different samples of polycarbonate, with differing pre-treatment, is described here by a generalized non-linear Maxwell system, proposed previously. This model gives the variation of the tensile yield stress related to each sample as a function of temperature and strain rate. The response is checked over a large range of strain rates, at temperatures from 20 to 80° C. The model allows the determination of the damping peak arising from the molecular movements which it expresses. A correspondence is found with the intermediate loss peak location, which occurs for each sample just below the α transition. In the hypothalamic region of the rat, SEM and TEM have shown oligociliated zones with large apical projections of cytoplasm, which may be zones of transport of components from the ventricles towards the underlying tissue. This is particularly apparent at the apex of the tanycytes, with rounded cytoplasmic projections and numerous microvilli, in the 'hypophyseotrophic' area. Similar findings are reported in man. A steady-state technique of heat-transfer measurement has been developed based on the method of Seban, Emery & Levy (1959) whereby energy is dissipated by the Joule effect in a thin metal sheet on the surface of a model. For the present application, use was made of very thin but mechanically resistant films of metal of very nearly constant thickness, obtained by a simple mirror-silvering technique. The present investigation was prompted by the desire to make very local measurements of heat transfer for application in regions where large variations in convective heat flux and therefore in temperature could be expected. Comparison between theory and experiment has been made in the simple case of a flat plate with constant heat flux for which a rigorous computation could be made based on the theory of Chapman & Rubesin (1949). The model was so conceived that the heat losses were small enough to be neglected. Therefore no corrections, which are often inaccurate, were needed for the experimental results, contrary to what is generally done when using other techniques for heat-transfer measurements. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment gives complete confidence in the method. The theoretical analysis showed that the measurements are simply related to the results that could be obtained in the case of an isothermal surface, because of the constant ratio that exists between the corresponding heat-transfer coefficients. © 1964, Cambridge University Press. The compression yield behaviour of polycarbonate, at constant strain-rate, over a wide range of temperatures, is described by the Ree-Eyring theory of non-Newtonian viscosity linked with a treatment which takes into account a distribution function of activation energies. The proposed yield mechanism relies on the assumption that the β process considered in the Ree-Eyring theory and the loss peak revealed by oscillatory measurements are related to the same molecular movements. A relation is given between the β transition conditions in yield measurements and in damping tests; its validity is checked. The broadness and the shape of the β loss peak are correlated with a spectrum of activation energies. Traditionally, vertical integration has concerned industrial economists only insofar as it affects market outcomes, particularly prices. This paper considers reverse causality, from prices – and more generally, from demand – to integration in a model of a dynamic oligopoly. If integration is costly but enhances productive efficiency, then a trend of rising prices and increasing integration could be due to growing demand, in which case a divorcement policy of forced divestiture may be counterproductive. Divorcement can only help consumers if it undermines collusion, but then there are dominating policies. Simulations of atmospheric entry of spacecraft and satellites require accurate knowledge of thermo-physical properties such as heat capacity in a wide temperature range. However, the characterization of this quantity is not straightforward for carbon composites at high temperatures, due to pyrolysis reactions that occur in the material. We develop a methodology for determining the heat capacity and required heat of pyrolysis for carbon composites in these conditions. The methodology consists of three steps: organic elemental analysis to determine composition, differential scanning calorimetry experiments on the different components to determine apparent heat capacity, and computations to separate the apparent heat capacity into heat capacity and heat of pyrolysis. This methodology is applied to the ZURAM® carbon/phenolic ablator from room temperature up to 1100 K. The results obtained were compared to separate analyzes of the different components of the material, assuming that heat capacity is an additive property. It was found that compressing the samples into disks provides improved resolution and repeatability for low density materials.
