This article arises out of a disquiet about the archaeology of historical India which has largely been concerned with cities and villages. Forests and wilderness rarely figure there, except in passing when the expanding agricultural terrain is described in relation to forest lands being domesticated or when there is an exploration of lines of communication, some of which pass through forested tracts. Because of this gap in engaging with lands beyond agrarian tracts and city sites, large expanses that carry markers of ancient human use have not centrally figured in such research. Here, we describe our field work in the Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve and its implications. The earliest remains go back in the form of caves to the 2nd century CE. Shrines of early medieval antiquity, sculptures, and reservoirs begin in the time of Kalachuri kings (7th century CE till the 13th century CE) and continue into the high medieval with Vaghela fortifications and palace remains (13th century CE onwards). What these can tell us when they are immersed in the hills and meadows of Bandhavgarh, in its forests and around its water bodies, is explored here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this communication, PSpice simulation software is used to design and characterize reverse biasing modes in series and parallel combinations. Using multiple diodes of similar types, how the breakdown voltage and power dissipation vary in parallel and series modes in reverse bias is investigated. In this paper, correlation equations and correlation factors between voltage and current in both series and parallel combinations using n = 1‐5 diodes in reverse bias are also found. The second‐order correlation equation between voltage and current provides a new way for designing new networks of PN junction diodes for better power gain. The mathematical formulation for applied voltage and average current of n = 1‐10 diodes in parallel and series combinations is also calculated, which can help researchers to design new network circuits for switching devices in the electronics industry. The RC‐coupled small‐signal amplifier is a widely used circuit that serves as a basic building block in electronic circuits. The study of amplifier circuits with various component modifications may yield important results that can be utilized to improve circuit designs based on application needs. Using the Pspice 9.5.2 simulation tool, a study of a BJT‐based CE amplifier is carried out to determine the dependence of frequency response, bandwidth, maximum voltage gain, power dissipation, input impedance, and other parameters while using a network of BJTs coupled in parallel and in series from Q1 to Qn. Background: Sleep apnea (SA) is highly prevalent in acromegaly. Ethnicity influences the prevalence of SA in the general population. We studied the prevalence of SA and other respiratory comorbidities in North Indian patients with active acromegaly. Design: Prospective, observational. Materials and Methods: Consecutive adult patients with active acromegaly (n = 35, age 39.7 ± 13.2 years) and hypersomatotropism (nonsuppression of serum growth hormone after oral glucose and elevated serum insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1]) were evaluated for respiratory symptoms, scoring for SA (Epworth Sleepiness Score [ESS] and STOP-BANG), pulmonary function tests (PFT), high-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) of the thorax, polysomnography (PSG), and transthoracic echocardiography. Age- and sex-matched healthy individuals (n = 34) served as controls. Results: Acromegaly subjects had dyspnea (34%), cough (37%), excessive daytime somnolence (43%), and fatigue (49%). Clinically significant ESS (>10) and STOP-BANG score (≥3) were present in 41% and 68.6% of subjects, respectively. PFT showed restrictive and obstructive patterns in 45.7% and 11.4% of acromegalics respectively; with higher total lung capacity (TLC), thoracic gas volume (TGV), and residual volume (RV). PSG revealed significantly higher SA events in acromegalics (central [acromegaly 24.63 ± 37.82 vs. control 3.21 ± 5.5], mixed [11 ± 19.46 vs. 3.50 ± 5.96], obstructive [34.86 ± 44.37 vs. 9.71 ± 10.48], and mean apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] [16.91 ± 18.0 vs. 7.86 ± 7.84]). Acromegalics had significantly higher prevalence of obstructive SA (71.4% [mild 31.4%, moderate 20%, severe 20%]) as compared to controls (38.2%). There was no correlation of AHI with serum IGF-1 and disease duration. Conclusion: Acromegaly subjects have a significantly higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms, SA, and abnormalities in PFT. The aim of the present study was to understand the ecological adaptation of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. in the North-West Himalayan region. P roxburghii needles showed morphological, epidermal, and anatomical variation at different altitudes. Needle length was negatively correlated with altitude. Stomatal characters like stomatal density, stomatal index, and guard cell lengths were found to be affected by environmental factors and showed a direct correlation with altitude. The results showed that potential conductance index was dependent on the climatic conditions of the habitat. The anatomical properties of needles exhibited variation from lower to higher elevation, especially in the number and position of resin ducts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Lab-scale batch studies were conducted to determine the biodegradability of oil associated with oily sludge from a steel mill using two microbial cultures enriched in the laboratory. After 60 days of biodegradation the residual oil content in mill sludge was reduced from 4.5–5% to 2.7–3.0%, corresponding to 40–45% loss with respect to initial. The rate of degradation was different for the two enrichment cultures studied. Significant loss of oil was observed in the un-inoculated controls while loss in the azide killed controls was negligible. Bioavailability limitations and the presence of structurally complex high molecular weight hydrocarbons in lubricating oil are responsible for the slow rate of degradation. Significant loss of oil in un-inoculated controls indicated the presence of indigenous microorganisms in oily mill sludge. The association of biomass with sludge solids and presence of a high level of residual oil may adversely affect the recyclability of iron-fines associated with the sludge. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The incidence of heart failure (HF) in India is estimated to be 0.5-1.7 cases per 1,000 people per year, and approximately 4,92,000-1.8 million new cases are detected every year. Despite the high rate of mortality associated with HF, most patients do not receive maximal guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT). Current guidelines advocate early multidrug combination therapy with four classes of drugs, namely, beta-blockers (BBs), mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs), and sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is), particularly in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). ARNIs reduce cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients with HFrEF. However, recent data indicated that only 4.8% of patients with HFrEF receive ARNI in India. Hence, at a national consensus on HF meeting, cardiology experts from India formulated a national consensus on the use of ARNI in HF based on current evidence and guidelines. The consensus states that ARNI should be used early in HF, particularly in de novo patients with HFrEF, and those with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), irrespective of the presence of low systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diabetes. Moreover, those with HFrEF on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors should be switched to ARNI to reduce the risk of repeated hospitalization for HF, worsening HF, and cardiac death, and to improve the quality of life (QoL). Starting ARNI during the first hospitalization is preferable, and it is safe and effective across all doses. ARNIs can also be used for secondary benefits in patients with preserved ejection fraction [heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)] and HF with mildly reduced EF [heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF)]., (© Journal of the Association of Physicians of India 2024.)
