Abstract

Advanced communication technologies have allowed the power-line-communication (PLC) channel to be a transmission medium that enables the transfer of high-speed digital data over the classical indoor electrical wires. The development of PLC systems for Internet, voice, and data services requires measurement-based models of the transfer characteristics of the mains network suitable for performance analysis by simulation. This paper presents a deterministic model describing the magnitude and phase of complex transfer functions of power-line networks using only one parameter. First, a PLC channel classification is realized, and an average magnitude and phase channel model by class is proposed. Second, the multipath characteristic of PLC channels is introduced. A statistical-based channel magnitude generator is built, and a group delay-based phase model is suggested. Abstract

Estimations of coherence bandwidth and time-delay parameters from wideband channel sounding measurements made in the 30 kHz-100 MHz band in several indoor environments are described in [1] and taken back in this paper. Powerline communications (PLC) modems rather see a channel which starts almost from 2 MHz [2]. A comparison between coherence bandwidth and time-delay parameters estimated in both frequency bands 30 kHz-100 MHz and 2 MHz-100 MHz is elaborated in this paper. Results are intended for applications in high-capacity indoor power-line networks. The investigation is aimed to show that the PLC channel studies in a band starting from a frequency lower than 2 MHz distorts the real values that an implementer should take, as the PLC modem see only the frequencies from 2 MHz. The coherence bandwidth and the time delay parameters are estimated from measurements of the complex transfer functions of the PLC channels. For the 30 kHz-100 MHz frequency band, the 90th percentile of the estimated coherence bandwidth at 0.9 correlation level stay above 65.5 kHz and below 691.5 kHz. It was observed to have a minimum value of 32.5 kHz. The maximum excess delay spread results show that 80% of the channels exhibit values between 0.6 [micro]s and 6.45 [micro]s. And a mean rms delay spread of 0.413 [micro]s is obtained. The passage to the 2 MHz-100 MHz frequency band induced an increase of the coherence bandwidth, whose min value is brought back to 43.5 kHz, and an important reduction of the time delay parameters: The min, max, mean, and standard deviation values of the maximum excess delay are almost divided by 2. For the twice frequency bands, this paper studies, also, the variability of the coherence bandwidth and time-delay spread parameters with the channel class [10], and thus with the location of the receiver with respect to the transmitter, and finally relates the rms delay spread to the coherence bandwidth. Abstract

International audience; Within the ICT OMEGA project, a thorough study of the Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues linked to Power Line Communications (PLC) has been conducted. In this paper, we present our investigations carried out in the context of a frequency bandwidth extension of PLC systems up to 100 MHz. The current status of EMC regulations for PLC is first recalled. An experimental study is then presented for the assessment of the effect of electromagnetic field radiation from an electrical network, in the 30­100 MHz band. Recommendations are given for the injected PSD levels to be used for future studies within the OMEGA project. From these results, the capacity of the PLC channel is evaluated in terms of outage probability. This analysis shows that an extended bandwidth up to 100 MHz provides capacities in excess of 1 Gbps, while satisfying the current emission limits. Finally, the possible countermeasures for the mitigation of EMC issues are discussed.

Abstract

This OMEGA deliverable presents a detailed study of the channel characterization and modelling for the Power Line Communications ({PLC}) channel. The Channel Transfer Function (CTF) is first thoroughly investigated. The channel time-frequency characteristics are studied from a measurement campaign covering a frequency band up to 100 MHz. Different approaches for the modelling of the CTF are proposed. Statistical channel generators are derived from both experimental observations and analytical representations, and an approach based on the transmission line theory is provided to study the effect of the network topology. Then, the impulsive noise generated by different electrical appliances is experimentally characterized at the source, and used to generate a model at the receiver. Stationary noise is finally investigated by both literature overview and experimental observations, and a simple model is provided. The models proposed in this deliverable will be used to support future studies on advanced signal processing techniques for {PLC} systems.

Abstract

This paper evaluates the performance of closed loop multiple input multiple output power line communication (CL MIMO PLC) system based on enhanced zero-forcing (ZF) equalizer. In this work, the two-sided Jacobi (TSJ) algorithm has been investigated for the computation of singular value decomposition of the channel matrix. Quantized parameters are feedback from the receiver to the transmitter for precoding process. Numerous simplifications are introduced for the reduction of the algorithm complexity. The performance of the CL MIMO PLC is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER), constellation error vector magnitude (EVM), and mean square error (MSE) between the constructed SVD matrices and Matlab computed ones. 11. Coherence Bandwidth and its Relationship with the RMS delay spread for PLC channels using Measurements up to 100 MHz.

Abstract

Estimations of coherence bandwidth from wideband channel sounding measurements made in the 30KHz–100MHz band in several indoor environments are described. Results are intended for applications in high-capacity indoor powerline networks. The coherence bandwidth and the RMS delay spread parameters are estimated from measurements of the complex transfer function of the Powerline Communications (PLC) channel. The 90th percentile of the estimated coherence bandwidth at 0.9 correlation level is above 65.5 KHz and 90% of estimated values of B0.9 are below 691.5 KHz. B0.9 was observed to have a minimum value of 32.5 KHz. The RMS delay spread describes the dispersion in the time domain due to multipath transmission. 80 % of the channels exhibit an RMS delay spread between 0.06μs and 0.78μs. Its mean value was equal to 0.413μs. The paper studies the variability of the coherence bandwidth and time-delay spread parameters with the channel class [9], and thus with the location of the receiver with respect to the transmitter. Abstract

Powerline communication systems are used to transmit audio and video transmissions with delay, datarate and QoS requirements. However, the Powerline medium is shared with other devices connected to any socket. When switching, and even during normal operation, these devices can generate some noises (stationary, cyclo-stationary & impulsive). A good knowledge of these noises is essential to counter them and to ensure a fair quality of service. Second, the multipath behaviour of the PLC channel is introduced: a statistical-based channel magnitude generator is built, and a refined phase model is suggested. Abstract: This article deals with the electromagnetic environment management problem within the context of high speed digital transmissions deployed in wired telecommunication networks. Traditionally, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is assured by filtering for better electromagnetic immunity, and by cable shielding for emission limitation. However, like cognitive radio, we can also, for high speed wired transmissions, treat the EMC as an intelligent and autonomous system capable of perceiving its environment, interpreting it, making suited decisions, and reacting according to the constraints related to the electromagnetic environment.
