We have developed two arrays of lumped element kinetic inductance detectors working in the D-band, and optimised for the low radiative background conditions of a satellite mission aiming at precision measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The first detector array is sensitive to the total power of the incoming radiation to which is coupled via single-mode waveguides and corrugated feed-horns, while the second is sensitive to the polarisation of the radiation thanks to orthomode transducers. Here, we focus on the total power detector array, which is suitable, for instance, for precision measurements of unpolarised spectral distortions of the CMB, where detecting both polarisations provides a sensitivity advantage. We describe the optimisation of the array design, fabrication and packaging, the dark and optical characterisation, and the performance of the black-body calibrator used for the optical tests. We show that almost all the detectors of the array are photon-noise limited under the radiative background of a 3.6 K black-body. This result, combined with the weak sensitivity to cosmic rays hits demonstrated with the OLIMPO flight, validates the idea of using lumped elements kinetic inductance detectors for precision, space-based CMB missions., Comment: To be submitted to JCAP

Background: Albuminuria has been classically considered a marker of kidney damage progression in diabetic patients and it is routinely assessed to monitor kidney function. However, the role of a mild GFR reduction on the development of stage ≥3 CKD has been less explored in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods: A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) or eGFR reduction > 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results: The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR < 90 ml/min/m2 were independent risk factors for stage ≥3 CKD and renal function worsening. When compared to patients with eGFR > 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions: Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening.

In this paper, experimental evidences about the resonance phenomena in a negative 2D photonic crystal are shown. Localized plasmon-like modes and guided mode resonances are detected in the reflectivity spectrum of a photonic crystal slab irradiated with out-of-plane incident radiation. The strong confinement of the radiation, in addition to the field enhancement, make photonic crystals a very appealing alternative to plasmonic substrates, avoiding the limits of absorption losses in metals.

Background Albuminuria has been classically considered a marker of kidney damage progression in diabetic patients and it is routinely assessed to monitor kidney function. However, the role of a mild GFR reduction on the development of stage ≥3 CKD has been less explored in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening. The electric quadrupole fundamental (v=1←0) band of molecular deuterium around 3 μm is accessed by cavity ring-down spectroscopy using a difference-frequency-generation source linked to the Cs-clock primary standard via an optical frequency comb synthesizer. An absolute determination of the line position and strength is reported for the first two transitions (J=2←0 and J=3←1) of the S branch. An accuracy of 6×10
-8 is achieved for the line-center frequencies, which improves by a factor 20 previous experimental results [A. R. W. McKellar and T. Oka, Can. J. Phys. 56, 1315 (1978)]. The line strength values, measured with 1% accuracy, are used to retrieve the quadrupole moment matrix elements which are found in good agreement with previous theoretical calculations [A. Porous silicon based one-dimensional photonic crystals, such as Bragg mirror and optical microcavity, has been modified by infiltration of a new biocompatible polymer, an amino functionalized poly([variant_greek_epsilon]-caprolactone) (PCL-NH
2 ), and characterized as optical biochemical sensors. The entrapped polymer adds strong chemical stability to the nanocrystalline matrix on exposure to alkaline solutions preserving the device sensing abilities in monitoring volatile substances and chemical compounds. Self-assembled monolayers are surfaces consisting of a single layer of molecules on a substrate: widespread examples of chemical and biological nature are alkylsiloxane, fatty acids, and alkanethiolate which can be deposited by different techniques on a large variety of substrates ranging from metals to oxides. In this paper, we demonstrate that a self-assembled biofilm of proteins can passivate porous silicon (PSi) based optical structures without affecting the transducing properties. Moreover, the protein coated PSi layer can also be used as a functionalized surface for proteomic applications

Diatoms are among the dominant phytoplankters in the world's oceans, and their external silica investments, resembling artificial photonic crystals, are expected to play an active role in light manipulation. Digital holography allowed studying the interaction with light of Coscinodiscus wailesii cell wall reconstructing the light confinement inside the cell cytoplasm, condition that is hardly accessible via standard microscopy. The full characterization of the propagated beam, in terms of quantitative phase and intensity, removed a long-standing ambiguity about the origin of the light confinement. A fully automated and three-dimensional (3D) segmentation method for the identification of the pulmonary parenchyma in thorax X-ray computed tomography (CT) datasets is proposed. It is meant to be used as preprocessing step in the computer-assisted detection (CAD) system for malignant lung nodule detection that is being developed by the Medical Applications in a Grid Infrastructure Connection (MAGIC-5) Project. In this new approach the segmentation of the external airways (trachea and bronchi), is obtained by 3D region growing with wavefront simulation and suitable stop conditions, thus allowing an accurate handling of the hilar region, notoriously difficult to be segmented. Particular attention was also devoted to checking and solving the problem of the apparent ‘fusion’ between the lungs, caused by partialvolume effects, while 3D morphology operations ensure the accurate inclusion of all the nodules (internal, pleural, and vascular) in the segmented volume. The newalgorithm was initially developed and tested on a dataset of 130 CT scans fromthe Italung-CT trial, andwas then applied to the ANODE09-competition images (55 scans) and to the LIDC database (84 scans), giving very satisfactory results. In particular, the lung contour was adequately located in 96% of the CT scans, with incorrect segmentation of the external airways in the remaining cases. Segmentation metrics were calculated that quantitatively express the consistency between automatic and manual segmentations: themean overlap degree of the segmentationmasks is 0.96±0.02, and the mean and the maximum distance between the mask borders (averaged on the whole dataset) are 0.74±0.05 and 4.5±1.5, respectively, which confirms that the automatic segmentations quite correctly reproduce the borders traced by the radiologist. Moreover, no tissue containing internal and pleural nodules was removed in the segmentation process, so that this method proved to be fit for the use in the framework of a CAD system. Finally, in the comparison with a two-dimensional segmentation procedure, inter-slice smoothness was calculated, showing that the masks created by the 3D algorithm are significantly smoother than those calculated by the 2D-only procedure.

- Abstract
We present the first ISO-LWS observations of the molecular FIR lines in 3 out of a sample of 11 Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAEBE), namely IRAS12496-7650, RCrA and LkHα234. High-J pure rotational CO lines (from Jup = 14 to Jup = 19) have been observed in all the spectra, while two (at 79 μm and 84 μm) and three OH lines (at 71, 79 and 84 μm) have been detected in LkHα234 and RCrA, respectively. For all the sources the molecular emission has been consistently fitted with a Large Velocity Gradient (LVG) model and results as originated in a warm (T ≥ 200 K) and dense (nH2 ≥ 105 cm-3) gas. By comparing the observed cooling ratios with models predictions, we find that the FUV radiation is the most probable responsible for line excitation. Shock mechanism contributions can be reasonably ruled out, especially because of the absence in the spectra of any water vapour line, in contrast with the predictions on the molecular emission coming from warm shocked environments.

- Abstract
We report the results of an investigation, performed with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) and the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on-board the ISO satellite, on the star forming region associated with the Herbig-Haro objects HH24-25 and 26. In particular, we obtained low-resolution LWS spectra towards the two Class 0 sources HH24MMS and HH25MMS as well as towards the Class I source HH26IR and its associated flow. In addition, SWS scans of pure H2 rotational lines in HH24MMS where acquired. All the spectra present the [OI] 63 μm and the [CII] 158 μm lines, while significant molecular emission from CO and H2O is detected only from HH25MMS and along the blue lobe of the HH26IR outflow, where the shocked activity is also evidenced by the presence of strong near infrared knots. The physical conditions of the regions strongly emitting in molecular lines are derived, showing that the two Class 0 sources are characterised by lower temperatures and higher densities than the HH26IR flow. The presence of both J and C shocks are envisaged to take into account the observed emission.

- Abstract
We present the far infrared spectra of the R CrA star forming region obtained with ISO-LWS. We collected a pointed observation on the Herbig Ae star R CrA and a raster scan covering the surrounding region, where HH100 (with its exciting source) and the pre-Main Sequence star T CrA are located. The OI 63μm and the CII 158μm lines have been detected in all the pointed positions, with a ratio consistent with PDR excitation. CO rotational lines (between Jup=14 and Jup=19) are detected on R CrA; from their intensities we derived, using a LVG model, the density and temperature of the emitting region. Other molecular transitions (OH and H2O) have been detected on the investigated objects; the derived cooling of all the molecular species is in agreement with C-shock as the likely excitation mechanism. The continuum emission of R CrA peaks around 100μm (as expected for a Herbig star) while the other sources (T CrA, HH100) show increasing continua up to ~200μm, indicating that they are probably less evolved sources.

- Abstract
The first detection of thermal water emission from a Herbig-Haro object is presented. The observations were performed with the LWS (Long Wavelength Spectrograph) aboard ISO (Infrared Space Observatory). Besides H2O, rotational lines of CO are present in the spectrum of HH 54. These high-J CO lines are used to derive the physical model parameters of the FIR (far-infrared) molecular line emitting regions. This model fits simultaneously the observed OH and H2O spectra for an OH abundance X(OH)=10-6 and a water vapour abundance X(H2O)=10-5. \ud \ud At a distance of 250pc, the total CO, OH and H2O rotational line cooling rate is estimated to be 1.3x10-2 L⊙, which is comparable to the mechanical luminosity generated by the 10km s-1 shocks, suggesting that practically all of the cooling of the weak-shock regions is done by these three molecular species alone.

We present a narrow-linewidth, singly-resonant cw optical parametric oscillator, emitting more than 1 W in the 2.7–4.2 µm range. The OPO is pumped by a narrow linewidth (40 kHz) fibre-laser system and the signal frequency is locked to a high-finesse Fabry–Pérot cavity in order to increase the spectral resolution, thus obtaining a residual linewidth of 70 kHz for the signal. We tested the spectral performance of our OPO on several transitions in the ν1 rovibrational band of CH3I, measuring line intensities and showing sub-Doppler dip detection. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the selection of lung nodules in computer tomography (CT) images is presented. The system is based on region growing (RG) algorithms and a new active contour model (ACM), implementing a local convex hull, able to draw the correct contour of the lung parenchyma and to include the pleural nodules. The CAD consists of three steps: (1) the lung parenchymal volume is segmented by means of a RG algorithm; the pleural nodules are included through the new ACM technique; (2) a RG algorithm is iteratively applied to the previously segmented volume in order to detect the candidate nodules; (3) a double-threshold cut and a neural network are applied to reduce the false positives (FPs). After having set the parameters on a clinical CT, the system works on whole scans, without the need for any manual selection. The CT database was recorded at the Pisa center of the ITALUNG-CT trial, the first Italian randomized controlled trial for the screening of the lung cancer. The detection rate of the system is 88.5% with 6.6 FPs/CT on 15 CT scans (about 4700 sectional images) with 26 nodules: 15 internal and 11 pleural. This paper reports on the development of a compact analyzer for ammonia monitoring in air, based on a distributed feedback diode laser at 2.005 μm. A dual-beam long-path technique was combined with wavelength modulation detection of absorption in order to reach a detection limit of about 25 ppb, with a 0.2-Hz equivalent noise bandwidth. Retrieval of NH
3 concentration was accomplished through a careful spectra analysis procedure based on the formalism of Fourier expansion of the 2nd harmonic signals, also taking into account residual-amplitude-modulation effects. The system was tested on certified gas-mixtures and revealed a good performance in terms of accuracy and reproducibility. Particularly, the short-term precision was found to be about 1 ‰, for NH3 mixing ratios of 10 ppm. The sample consists of 17 Class 0 sources, 15 Class I, nine Bright Class I (L[sub bol] > 10[sup 4] L...) and 20 Class II (14 Herbig Ae/Be stars and six T Tauri stars). We find that each class occupies a well-defined region in our diagram with colour temperatures increasing from Class 0 to Class II. Therefore the [60—100] versus [100—170] two-colour diagram is a powerful and simple tool to derive from future (e.g. with the Herschel Space Observatory) photometric surveys the evolutionary status of YSOs. The advantage over other tools already developed is that photometry at other wavelengths is not required: three flux measurements are enough to derive the evolutionary status of a source. As an example we use the colours of the YSO IRAS 18148—0440 to classify it as Class I. The main limitation of this work is the low spatial resolution of the LWS which, for some objects, causes a high uncertainty in the measured fluxes due to background emission or to source confusion inside the LWS beam.
