The MQXFA Quadrupole magnets will be installed in High Luminosity LHC to form the Q1 and Q3 inner triplet optical elements in front of the interaction points 1 (ATLAS) and 5 (CMS). A pair of MQXFA units is assembled in a stainless steel helium vessel, including the end domes, to make the Q1 Cold Mass or the Q3 Cold Mass. The US HL LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project* is responsible for the design, manufacturing and test of the Q1/Q3 Cold Masses and the complete MQXFA magnets. CERN provides the cryostat components and is responsible for integration and installation in HL LHC. The MQXFA quadrupoles have 150 mm aperture, 4.2 m magnetic length, nominal gradient of 132.2 T/m, and coil peak field of 11.3 T. They use Nb_3Sn conductor and a support structure made of segmented aluminum shells pre-loaded by using bladders and keys. Within the collaborative effort between KIT and Bilfinger Noell GmbH the development of a full scale superconducting undulator with 20 mm period length (SCU20) has been completed. This device addresses the reliability and reproducibility aspects of the manufacturing process, allowing for the status of a commercial product. The conduction cooled 1.5 m long coils were characterized in the KIT horizontal test facility CASPER II and later assembled in the final cryostat. The system was extensively tested in the final configuration before installation in the KIT storage ring KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator) to be the source of the NANO beamline in December 2017. The Institute for Beam Physics and Technology (IBPT) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and the company Babcock Noell GmbH (BNG) are running an R&D program on superconducting undulators (SCUs). The collaboration is working on a SCU with 20 mm period length (SCU20) for ANKA, the test facility and synchrotron radiation source, run by the IBPT. The 1.5 m long undulator coils have been tested in a conduction-cooled environment. At the synchrotron ANKA (ANgstrom source KArlsruhe) we pursue a research and development program on superconducting undulators (SCUs). This technology is of interest to improve the spectral characteristics of the emitted photons in third and fourth generation light sources. We present here the results obtained within the ongoing collaboration with the industrial partner Babcock Noell GmbH (BNG) on NbTi conduction cooled planar devices. Investigations on the application of alternative superconductors as well as a summary of the achievements reached to precisely characterize the magnetic field properties of SCUs and to measure the beam heat load to a cold bore are also described., Proceedings of the 6th Int. Superconducting insertion devices (IDs) can reach, for the same gap and period length a higher field strength compared to permanent magnet IDs. Their performance depends strongly on the magnetic field quality. While the magnetic measurements technology of permanent magnet based IDs made significant progress during the last years, for superconducting IDs similar major developments are necessary. As a part of our R&D program for superconducting insertion devices at the ANKA synchrotron light source a measurement setup for conduction cooled superconducting coils with a maximum length of 2 m was built and commissioned. In the CASPER II (Characterization Setup for Phase Error Reduction) facility the magnet coils can be trained and tested for maximum current and field quality, including the local field distribution as well as the first and second field integrals. The Helical Cooling Channel (HCC) is a technique proposed for six-dimensional (6D) cooling of muon beams. The HCC for muon collider and some other applications is usually divided into several sections each with progressively stronger fields, smaller aperture, and shorter helix period to achieve the optimal muon cooling rate. Novel magnet design concepts based on simple coils arranged in a helical solenoid configuration have been developed to provide HCC magnet systems with the desired parameters. The level of magnetic field in the HCC high-field sections suggests using a hybrid coil structure with High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) in the innermost coil layers and Nb₃Sn superconductor in the outer coil layers. The development of the concepts and engineering designs of hybrid helical solenoids based on advanced superconductor technologies, with special emphasis on the use of HTS for high fields at low temperature is the key step towards a practical HCC. High field accelerator magnets are needed for high energy physics applications. Superconducting materials able to reach these fields with low losses are required, and YBCO Roebel cable is being developed to address this issue. Characterization of commercially available Roebel cables for high field low temperature superconducting magnets is needed. YBCO Roebel cable with low AC losses is being developed and has limited commercial availability. Its behavior is not fully understood, however, especially in liquid helium and at high magnetic fields. YBCO Roebel cable will be acquired from a commercial vendor and characterized at cryogenic temperatures, in varying magnetic fields, and different strain configurations. A comprehensive behavior analysis will be performed, including operational and fatigue limits. Characterization of YBCO Roebel cable at low temperatures will be performed, including determination of the current flow path in steady-state and during quench using magneto-optical imaging, investigation of the effects of strand insulation, and examination of the mechanical and quench behavior at 4.2 K, 77 K, and varying magnetic fields., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan
