Abstract Inferior frontal sulcal hyperintensities (IFSH) observed on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI have been proposed as indicators of elevated cerebrospinal fluid waste accumulation in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). However, to validate IFSH as a reliable imaging biomarker, further replication studies are required. The objective of this study was to investigate associations between IFSH and CSVD, and their potential repercussions, i.e., cognitive impairment and depression. We prospectively recruited 47 patients with CSVD and 29 cognitively normal controls (NC). IFSH were rated visually based on FLAIR MRI. Using different regression models, we explored the relationship between IFSH, group status (CSVD vs. NC), CSVD severity assessed with MRI, cognitive function, and symptoms of depression. Patients with CSVD were more likely to have higher IFSH scores compared to NC (OR 5.64, 95% CI 1.91–16.60), and greater CSVD severity on MRI predicted more severe IFSH (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.14–1.88). Higher IFSH scores were associated with lower cognitive function (-0.96, 95% CI -1.81 to -0.10), and higher levels of depression (0.33, 95% CI 0.01–0.65). CSVD and IFSH may be tightly linked to each other, and the accumulation of waste products, indicated by IFSH, could have detrimental effects on cognitive function and symptoms of depression.

Abstract Introduction Patient satisfaction is a critical outcome in total joint arthroplasty (TJA), yet assessing it effectively remains a challenge due to limitations in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS). While these measures are commonly gathered in clinical settings, additional contact through mail or phone is often needed, and low response rates can affect the validity and reliability of collected data. To improve response rates, this study evaluated various methods of incentivizing patient participation in a randomized trial format, focusing on postal questionnaires. Patients and methods The study investigated three methods to improve response rates: including a gift card with the questionnaire, promising a gift card upon questionnaire completion, and offering no incentive. It also examined whether different monetary values and the inclusion of the surgeon’s name on materials impacted response rates. We tried to determine factors that could improve follow up telephone response rates in the group of patients that failed to return their questionnaires. Results Higher response rates were observed with monetary incentives (P = 0.056), larger amounts of money offered (P = 0.3839) for filling out the questionnaire, and if the surgeon’s details were on the cover letter or questionnaire (P = 0.632). Increased neck strength has been linked to a potential decrease in traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The purpose was to determine the efficacy of a neck-strengthening protocol using a novel neck-strengthening device to increase isometric neck strength and rate of force development (RFD). Utilizing self-generated centripetal force, participants trained for 14 weeks. A linear mixed model was used to analyze the relationship between post-assessment measurements and pre-assessments measurements, while accounting for repeated measure random effect at the individual level, and a regular random error term. RFD values were 4.344 times higher in the clockwise direction and 5.978 times higher in the counterclockwise direction when comparing pre and post assessment measurements. School connectedness is associated with a broad range of positive academic and mental health outcomes. A dimension of school connectedness, student-teacher connectedness, is related to improved academic progress and may be an important protective factor against risk-taking behaviors, particularly for low-income students and for those with limited parental support. The purpose of this qualitative secondary data analysis was to explore teacher perceptions of parental involvement in a low-income, rural middle school serving a diverse student population and the influence on student-teacher connectedness. Data were taken from transcripts from five focus groups comprised of middle school teachers, administrators, and clinicians (n = 26). Thematic analysis included first and second cycle coding followed by developing Venn diagrams to depict categories and patterns before reaching consensus on themes. Three themes were identified: (1) parental support of students; (2) parental modeling for students; and (3) parental interaction with teachers. Overall, teachers perceived a lack of parental involvement in this low-income diverse middle school which led to missed connections between students and teachers. This disconnect may be the result of multiple factors, including perceived low levels of parental support for students, differing expectations between parents and teachers, and perceived poor quality interactions between parents and teachers. When formulating strategies to enhance student--teacher connectedness, consideration should be given to the extent and importance of the role of parental involvement.

Traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease are three distinct neurological disorders that share common pathophysiological mechanisms involving neuroinflammation. One sequela of neuroinflammation includes the pathologic hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, an endogenous microtubule-associated protein that protects the integrity of neuronal cytoskeletons. Tau hyperphosphorylation results in protein misfolding and subsequent accumulation of tau tangles forming neurotoxic aggregates. These misfolded proteins are characteristic of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease and can lead to downstream neuroinflammatory processes, including assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex. Inflammasomes refer to a family of multimeric protein units that, upon activation, release a cascade of signaling molecules resulting in caspase-induced cell death and inflammation mediated by the release of interleukin-1β cytokine. One specific inflammasome, the NOD-like receptor protein 3, has been proposed to be a key regulator of tau phosphorylation where it has been shown that prolonged NOD-like receptor protein 3 activation acts as a causal factor in pathological tau accumulation and spreading. This review begins by describing the epidemiology and pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease. Next, we highlight neuroinflammation as an overriding theme and discuss the role of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome in the formation of tau deposits and how such tauopathic entities spread throughout the brain. We then propose a novel framework linking traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease as inflammasome-dependent pathologies that exist along a temporal continuum. Finally, we discuss potential therapeutic targets that may intercept this pathway and ultimately minimize long-term neurological decline.

ABSTRACT Advances in methods for collecting environmental DNA (eDNA) are revolutionizing biomonitoring capabilities. The goal of this study was to leverage existing survey technology to design and test an eDNA sampler that captures an integrated eDNA sample over the length of a deep‐water transect. We manufactured a 300 × 100 × 100 mm mountable, open‐ended box made of high‐density polyethylene that could be attached to the frame of a preexisting deep tow camera system. The box (OCD; open–close device) was equipped with an actuator that attached to hinged doors at both ends, enabling it to be opened and closed remotely at depths up to 6000 m through preexisting communications, thereby exposing the internal chamber to the surrounding water upon activation. A sterile active carbon sponge was inserted into the internal chamber for eDNA capture during each deployment. The OCD sampler was field tested during a voyage to the Gascoyne Marine Park region off northwest Australia. We compared three different methods for processing the captured eDNA from the sampler: filtering OCD water, extracting eDNA from sponge pieces, and filtering sponge rinse water. Using fish as our example organism, we also compared the identities of fishes from eDNA detections with bottom trawl survey data collected during the same survey, and the known regional species pool, to confirm the eDNA identifications were plausible. A large number of fishes (193 taxa, from 87 families) were detected, and the majority were found within their expected depth ranges (> 75%), and in the trawl catches (60%). We discuss design and manufacturing lessons, ideas for increased eDNA capture efficiency for improved methodologies in sample processing, and how to establish appropriate field controls. We also discuss how this technology could advance our scientific understanding in ocean studies in terms of ecological metrics provided and the trade‐offs compared to other sampling tools.

Background The risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in conflict and post-conflict settings in Northeastern Nigeria has not been evaluated to date. As this region undergoes recovery, understanding the prevalence of NCDs, such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, and the associated behavioral coping mechanisms, is crucial for developing tailored healthcare solutions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of conflict on the prevalence of NCDs in conflict-exposed areas in Northeastern Nigeria compared with non-conflict regions. Methods This study was an unmatched cross-sectional study. The participants were selected from inpatients and outpatients at general hospitals in Mubi (conflict-exposed) and Jada (non-conflict), which are local government areas in Adamawa, a state in Northeastern Nigeria. The study was conducted over four months, and data on various health indicators were collected. Multivariable binary logistic regression and complementary log regression were performed to investigate the effects of individual risk factors and regional settings on the prevalence of NCDs. Findings A sample of 463 individuals from both locations was analyzed. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity, and depression in the entire cohort was 22.92%, 5.04%, 44.19%, and 17.94%, respectively. The rates of hypertension and abdominal obesity in the conflict-exposed Mubi were lower, and the rate of depression was higher than those recorded in Jada. Females showed higher rates of hypertension, obesity, and depression than males. The residents of Mubi had lower odds of having abdominal obesity (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.18; 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.11–0.28]) but a higher risk of depression (incidence risk ratio (IRR) = 4.78; 95% CI [2.51–9.22]) than those in Jada. However, the participants affected by insurgency showed higher odds of having both abdominal obesity (aOR = 1.95; 95% CI [1.23–3.08]) and depression (IRR = 1.76; 95% CI [1.08–2.88]) than those who were not affected by the conflict. Conclusions The findings of this study underscore the urgent need for mental health support in conflict-affected regions and comprehensive healthcare strategies for the aging population. As adjustment of lifestyle factors is crucial for addressing NCDs, effective case management and food security are essential for reducing the risk of NCDs in conflict-exposed populations.

Objectives This systematic review aims to assess the available evidence on the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Middle Eastern (ME) populations residing in high-income countries (HICs). The review focuses on two key aspects: (1) evaluating the efficacy of interventions for improving health outcomes and (2) examining the barriers to and facilitators of the implementation and effectiveness of interventions.Design Systematic review.Data sources MEDLINE, ProQuest Central and Scopus were searched between 10 September 2023 and 10 October 2023.Eligibility criteria Studies published in English from 2000 to 2023 involving ME populations residing in HICs who are prediabetic or at high risk of T2DM. Interventions included behavioural, pharmacological and educational strategies, with outcomes assessed in terms of diabetes incidence, lifestyle changes and healthcare utilisation, as well as barriers and facilitators of intervention effectiveness.Data extraction and synthesis Data were extracted and synthesised based on study design, geographical location, participant characteristics, type of approach and key outcomes. A narrative synthesis was used to identify patterns in intervention effectiveness, barriers (eg, cultural and gender norms, language) and facilitators (eg, family support, religious considerations).Results 20 studies were included and categorised into two groups: interventional studies (randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs) and qualitative and cross-sectional studies. Interventional studies demonstrated significant improvements in health outcomes, including weight loss, increases in physical activity and improved cardiometabolic markers. Qualitative studies revealed important insights into the sociocultural factors facilitating T2DM prevention that must be considered for effective interventions, including gender norms, family dynamics (relations, interactions, etc) and religious beliefs, with barriers including language, lack of health insurance, unaffordable financial costs and social isolation.Conclusions This systematic review highlights the effectiveness of culturally sensitive interventions in preventing T2DM among ME populations in HICs. It emphasises a need for co-designed, culturally appropriate interventions that involve people from ME populations in HIC with lived experience of T2DM, healthcare providers and community stakeholders.PROSPERO registration number PROSPERO, CRD42023457123.

Organic donor–acceptor (D–A) cocrystals are gaining attention for their potential applications in optoelectronic devices. This study explores the dynamics of charge transfer (CT) and triplet exciton formation in various D–A cocrystals. By examining a series of D–A cocrystals composed of coronene (COR), peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX), and perylene (PER) donors paired with N,N-bis(3′-pentyl)perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (PDI), naphthalene-1,4:5,8-tetracarboxy-dianhydride (NDA), or pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) acceptors, using transient absorption microscopy and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we find that the strength of the CT interaction influences the nature and yield of triplet excitons produced by CT state recombination. In particular, in the PER-PDI, COR-PTO, and PER-PTO cocrystals, localized triplet excitons are lower in energy than the CT state. By contrast, no localized triplet excitons are available to the CT states of the PXX-NDA, PER-NDA, and PXX-PTO cocrystals, and as a result, the CT states rapidly decay to ground state with no triplet formation. Moreover, density functional theory calculations show that the transition between delocalized CT states to a triplet state localized to a single donor or acceptor unit provides the source of spin–orbit coupling necessary when the triplet states are energetically accessible. Abstract Background An increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) after COVID-19 has been reported in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The burden of COVID-related DM has yet to be described in Africa, where the overall risk of DM has been increasing rapidly. Our objective was to compare the prevalence of pre-DM and DM in Nigerian individuals with a history of COVID-19 to individuals without known COVID-19 infection. Methods We undertook a retrospective cohort study with 256 individuals with a past medical history of COVID-19 with no history of pre-DM or DM and 256 individuals without a history of COVID-19 or pre-DM/DM. Participants were categorized as pre-DM (fasting capillary glucose 100–125 mg/dL) or DM (fasting capillary glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL). We employed univariate and multivariable logistic regression to identify key predictors and adjust for confounders related to hyperglycaemia risk factors. Additionally, we used multinomial logistic regression to analyze the relationship between COVID-19 history and diabetes status, distinguishing between normal, pre-diabetic, and diabetic glucose levels. All models were adjusted for age, gender, hypertension, physical activity, central adiposity, and family history of DM. Results Compared to the control group, those with a history of COVID-19 had a similar median age (38 vs. 40 years, p = 0.84), had a higher proportion of men (63% vs. 49%), and had a lower prevalence of central adiposity (waist: hip ratio ≥ 0.90 for males and WHR ≥ 0.85 for females) (48% vs. 56.3%, p = 0.06). Of the 256 with a history of COVID-19, 44 (17%) required in-patient care. The median (interquartile range) time interval between COVID-19 diagnosis and the glycaemic assessment was 19 (IQR: 14, 24) months. Pre-DM prevalence was 27% in the post-COVID-19 group and 4% in the control group, whereas the prevalence of DM was 7% in the post-COVID-19 group and 2% in the control group. Background/Objective: Deep learning (DL) technology has shown potential in enhancing diagnostic accuracy in dentomaxillofacial radiology, particularly for detecting carious lesions, apical lesions, and periodontal bone loss. However, its effect on general dentists’ ability to detect radiographic bone loss (RBL) in clinical practice remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of the Denti.AI DL technology on general dentists’ ability to identify bone loss in intraoral radiographs, addressing this gap in the literature. Methods: Ten dentists from the university’s dental clinics independently assessed 26 intraoral radiographs (periapical and bitewing) for bone loss using a Likert scale probability index with and without DL assistance. The participants viewed images on identical monitors with controlled lighting. This study generated 3940 data points for analysis. The statistical analyses included receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, area under the curve (AUC), and ANOVA tests. Results: Most dentists showed minor improvement in detecting bone loss on periapical radiographs when using DL. For bitewing radiographs, only a few dentists showed minor improvement. Overall, the difference in diagnostic accuracy between evaluations with and without DL was minimal (0.008). The differences in AUC for periapical and bitewing radiographs were 0.031 and −0.009, respectively, and were not statistically significant. Conclusions: This study found no statistically significant improvement in experienced dentists’ diagnostic accuracy for detecting bone loss in intraoral radiographs when using Denti.AI deep learning technology.

Summary: Identifying the main threats to soil biodiversity is crucial as soils harbor ∼60% of global biodiversity. Many previous meta-analyses investigating the impact of different global changes (GCs) on biodiversity have omitted soil fauna or are limited by the GCs studied. We conducted a broad-scale meta-analysis focused on soil fauna communities, analyzing 3,161 effect sizes from 624 publications studying climate change, land-use intensification, pollution, nutrient enrichment, invasive species and habitat fragmentation. Land-use intensification resulted in large reductions in soil fauna communities, especially for the larger-bodied groups. Unexpectedly, pollution caused the largest negative impact on soil biodiversity - particularly worrying due to continually increasing levels of pollution and poor mechanistic understanding of impacts relative to other GCs. Not all GCs and stressors were detrimental; organic-based nutrient enrichment often resulted in positive responses. Including soil biodiversity in large-scale analyses is vital to fully understand the impact of GCs across the different realms.

ObjectivesDaratumumab, a monoclonal antibody against CD38, is increasingly used in the treatment of multiple myeloma, other hematological malignancies and autoimmune diseases. Little is known about its CNS toxicity. We present a case of a patient with POEMS syndrome (syndrome of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin changes) who developed an acute leukoencephalopathy shortly after initiation of therapy with daratumumab.MethodsCase report following the CARE case report guidelinesResultsThe patient presented with symptoms of headache and diffuse worsening of a pre-existing tetraparesis. MRI showed a rapidly progressive leukoencephalopathy. Extensive diagnostic evaluation revealed no specific cause, suggesting the leukoencephalopathy to be caused by daratumumab.DiscussionOur report highlights a probably rare, but clinically significant adverse effect of daratumumab and underlines the necessity of raised vigilance for neurological side effects in patients treated with daratumumab.

Temporary, sudden, shooting and recurrent unilateral facial pain in the supply area of one or more trigeminal nerve branches characterises trigeminal neuralgia. Innocuous stimuli trigger the pain, e.g. chewing, speaking or brushing teeth. In some patients, paroxysms superimpose on continuous pain. In aetiological terms, idiopathic, classic (due to neurovascular compression) and secondary trigeminal neuralgia (e.g. due to multiple sclerosis, brainstem ischaemia and space-occupying lesions) are defined. Many drugs may be efficacious, with carbamazepine being first-choice therapy. However, non-pharmacological and invasive procedures may also help. To reach the correct diagnosis and determine the best therapeutic measures, adequate pain characterisation and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. We hereby present our experience of an interdisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.

In particular, the present study aimed at validating the 18-item Portuguese CompACT measure of psychological flexibility in a chronic illness sample (total n = 419; 83.8% women; 16.2% men) collected via online survey. Method: In particular, we studied the internal structure of the scale employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), gender-based invariance, and associations with conceptually relevant constructs (shame, anxiety, depressive symptoms, insomnia severity, and self-compassion). Results: All items from the Openness to Experience subscale were removed due to low loading values on the EFA. The CFA confirmed the adequacy of an 8-item Portuguese CompACT with two subscales, Behavioral Awareness (a = .87) and Valued Action (a = .86). Both subscales correlated negatively with shame, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and insomnia severity. The Valued Action subscale additionally correlated positively with self-compassion. Conclusion: An 8-item version of the Portuguese CompACT, with two subscales, seems to be well-suited for application for clinicians with clients with chronic illness. The present paper examined the relationship between perceived ostracism and paranoid thoughts (social reference, persecution) by focusing on the potential moderating roles of psychological flexibility and inflexibility. As expected, data from a sample of 315 internet users (M.sub.age = 31.5 years) showed that perceived ostracism was positively related to both social reference and persecution. Psychological flexibility did not moderate the ostracism-paranoid thought relationships. However, psychological inflexibility was a moderator of the ostracism-social reference relationship, but not for ostracism-persecution. Specifically, at both high and low levels of psychological inflexibility, there was a significant positive relationship between ostracism and social reference. These unexpected findings suggest that future research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms by which perceived ostracism may lead to paranoia.

Purpose: This study aims to examine entry-level PhD students' experiences with participating in Critical Friends, a peer review protocol, used to support learning the threshold concept of literature review. It also sought to determine if, and how, students used the peer review protocol electively during their first year of doctoral study. Design/methodology/approach: The authors used a sequential, QUAL-qual mixed-method design to guide the study. Reflective learning journals, surveys and interviews were collected from three cohorts of PhD students (N = 18). Findings: Thematic analysis revealed that giving and receiving writing critique was uncomfortable for these novice peer reviewers and many described emotional disciplining associated with vulnerability. Critical Friends offered a safe space to begin mastery of the literature review and begin transforming new researcher and writer identities. While Critical Friends was a positive experience for students, they struggled implementing the protocol on their own following the course. Practical implications: These findings support the need for faculty to embed peer review opportunities in courses during the first year to facilitate role modeling and mentoring. The findings also demonstrate the need to engage students with peer review early in the program to increase comfort, cultivate student resiliency for accepting critical feedback and build capacity for students to learn with and from others. Originality/value: This paper advocates for the use of peer review practices early in the doctoral study to promote the development of researcher identity and positioning within the research community.

Aspergillus fumigatus is intrinsically resistant to the widely used antifungal fluconazole, and therapeutic failure can result from acquired resistance to voriconazole, the primary treatment for invasive aspergillosis. The molecular basis of substrate specificity and innate and acquired resistance of A. fumigatus to azole drugs were addressed using crystal structures, molecular models, and expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae of the sterol 14α-demethylase isoforms AfCYP51A and AfCYP51B targeted by azole drugs, together with their cognate reductase AfCPRA2 and AfERG6 (sterol 24-C-methyltransferase). As predicted by molecular modelling, functional expression of CYP51A and B required eburicol and not lanosterol. A crowded conformationally sensitive region involving the BC-loop, helix I, and the heme makes AfCYP51A T289 primarily responsible for resistance to fluconazole, VT-1161, and the agrochemical difenoconazole. The Y121F T289A combination was required for higher level acquired resistance to fluconazole, VT-1161, difenoconazole, and voriconazole, and confirms posaconazole, isavuconazole and possibly ravuconazole as preferred treatments for target-based azole-resistant aspergillosis due to such a combination of mutations.

Abstract Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in medical and dental imaging. Compared to a multidetector CT, it provides volumetric images with high isotropic resolution at a reduced radiation dose, cost and footprint without the need for patient translation. The current CBCT has several intrinsic limitations including reduced soft tissue contrast, inaccurate quantification of X-ray attenuation, image distortions and artefacts, which have limited its clinical applications primarily to imaging hard tissues and made quantitative analysis challenging. Here we report a multisource CBCT (ms-CBCT) which overcomes the shortcomings of the conventional CBCT by using multiple narrowly collimated and rapidly scanning X-ray beams from a carbon nanotube field emission source array. Phantom imaging studies show that, the ms-CBCT increases the accuracy of the Hounsfield unit values by 60%, eliminates the cone beam artefacts, extends the axial coverage, and improves the soft tissue contrast-to-noise ratio by 30–50%, compared to the CBCT configuration.

Abstract Restoring native grassland vegetation can substantially improve ecosystem service outcomes from agricultural watersheds, but profitable pathways are needed to incentivize conversion from conventional crops. Given growing demand for renewable energy, using grassy biomass to produce biofuels provides a potential solution. We assessed the techno‐economic feasibility and life cycle outcomes of a “grass‐to‐gas” pathway that includes harvesting grassy (lignocellulosic) biomass for renewable natural gas (RNG) production through anaerobic digestion (AD), expanding on previous research that quantified ecosystem service and landowner financial outcomes of simulated grassland restoration in the Grand River Basin of Iowa and Missouri, United States. We found that the amount of RNG produced through AD of grassy biomass ranged 0.12–45.04 million gigajoules (GJ), and the net present value (NPV) of the RNG ranged −$97 to $422 million, depending on the combination of land use, productivity, and environmental credit scenarios. Positive NPVs are achieved with environmental credits for replacement of synthetic agricultural inputs with digestate and clean fuel production (e.g., USEPA D3 Renewable Identification Number, California Low Carbon Fuel Standard). Producing RNG from grassy biomass emits 15.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ, which compares favorably to the fossil natural gas value of 61.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ and exceeds the US Environmental Protection Agency's requirement for cellulosic biofuel. Overall, this study demonstrates opportunities and limitations to using grassy biomass from restored grasslands for sustainable RNG production.

Background: Recently recognized by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease, Noma, an acute and destructive gangrenous disease affecting the gums and facial structures within the oral cavity, has a high mortality rate if untreated. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and impact of Noma among internally displaced populations in Northeastern Nigeria. Design: A retrospective study. Methods: This retrospective study investigates the prevalence and impact of Noma among internally displaced populations in Northeastern Nigeria. Noma is endemic in Northern Nigeria, Africa, and its occurrence has been linked to extreme poverty, malnutrition, poor hygiene, and inadequate healthcare – conditions exacerbated by the ongoing Boko Haram conflict. Results: The retrospective descriptive cross-sectional analysis of 17 cases reveals a median age of 8 years, with most of the patients being children who suffer significant social stigmas, such as difficulties in speaking, eating, and social integration, including reduced school attendance and marital prospects. Conclusion: The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive research into the etiology of Noma and its socio-economic impact. It emphasizes the necessity for early and effective intervention strategies, particularly in conflict-stricken areas with limited healthcare access.

Online interventions promoted to enhance cognitive ability hold great appeal for their potential positive impact in social, employment, and educational domains. Cognitive training programs have, thus far, not been shown to influence performance on tests of general cognitive aptitude. Strengthening Mental Abilities with Relational Training (SMART) is an online program that claims to raise intelligence quotient (IQ). This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the effect of SMART on indices of cognitive aptitude and academic performance. The review protocol was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42019132404). A systematic literature search of bibliographic databases (ERIC, PsycINFO, PubMed, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, Scopus, Proquest Psychology) identified five studies (N = 195) that met the criterion for inclusion. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias 'RoB 2' tool. Overall, there was a moderate impact of SMART on measures of nonverbal IQ (g = 0.57, 95% CI [0.24, 0.89]). There was insufficient evidence to determine the impact of SMART on any other domain. All studies included in the review were judged to be at a high risk of bias for their primary outcome. Despite the methodological limitations of published studies to date, these initial findings suggest that a large-scale study of SMART is warranted.

The hydroxyl (OH), hydroperoxy (HO2), and organic peroxy (RO2) radicals play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. In the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx), reactions between OH and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can initiate a radical propagation cycle that leads to the production of ozone and secondary organic aerosols. Previous measurements of these radicals under low-NOx conditions in forested environments characterized by emissions of biogenic VOCs, including isoprene and monoterpenes, have shown discrepancies with modeled concentrations. During the summer of 2016, OH, HO2, and RO2 radical concentrations were measured as part of the Program for Research on Oxidants: Photochemistry, Emissions, and Transport – Atmospheric Measurements of Oxidants in Summer (PROPHET-AMOS) campaign in a midlatitude deciduous broadleaf forest. Measurements of OH and HO2 were made by laser-induced fluorescence–fluorescence assay by gas expansion (LIF-FAGE) techniques, and total peroxy radical (XO2) mixing ratios were measured by the Ethane CHemical AMPlifier (ECHAMP) instrument. Supporting measurements of photolysis frequencies, VOCs, NOx, O3, and meteorological data were used to constrain a zero-dimensional box model utilizing either the Regional Atmospheric Chemical Mechanism (RACM2) or the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM). Model simulations tested the influence of HOx regeneration reactions within the isoprene oxidation scheme from the Leuven Isoprene Mechanism (LIM1). On average, the LIM1 models overestimated daytime maximum measurements by approximately 40 % for OH, 65 % for HO2, and more than a factor of 2 for XO2. Modeled XO2 mixing ratios were also significantly higher than measured at night. Addition of RO2 + RO2 accretion reactions for terpene-derived RO2 radicals to the model can partially explain the discrepancy between measurements and modeled peroxy radical concentrations at night but cannot explain the daytime discrepancies when OH reactivity is dominated by isoprene. The models also overestimated measured concentrations of isoprene-derived hydroxyhydroperoxides (ISOPOOH) by a factor of 10 during the daytime, consistent with the model overestimation of peroxy radical concentrations. Constraining the model to the measured concentration of peroxy radicals improves the agreement with the measured ISOPOOH concentrations, suggesting that the measured radical concentrations are more consistent with the measured ISOPOOH concentrations. These results suggest that the models may be missing an important daytime radical sink and could be overestimating the rate of ozone and secondary product formation in this forest.

Abstract Autophagosome formation, a crucial step in macroautophagy (autophagy), requires the covalent conjugation of LC3 proteins to the amino headgroup of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) lipids. Atg3, an E2-like enzyme, catalyzes the transfer of LC3 from LC3-Atg3 to PEs in targeted membranes. Here we show that the catalytically important C-terminal regions of human Atg3 (hAtg3) are conformationally dynamic and directly interact with the membrane, in collaboration with its N-terminal membrane curvature-sensitive helix. The functional relevance of these interactions was confirmed by in vitro conjugation and in vivo cellular assays. Therefore, highly curved phagophoric rims not only serve as a geometric cue for hAtg3 recruitment, but also their interaction with hAtg3 promotes LC3-PE conjugation by targeting its catalytic center to the membrane surface and bringing substrates into proximity. Our studies advance the notion that autophagosome biogenesis is directly guided by the spatial interactions of Atg3 with highly curved phagophoric rims.

In recent years, small-scale studies have suggested that we may be able to substantially strengthen children's general cognitive abilities and intelligence quotient (IQ) scores using a relational operant skills training program (SMART). Only one of these studies to date has included an active Control Condition, and that study reported the smallest mean IQ rise. The present study is a larger stratified active-controlled trial to independently test the utility of SMART training for raising Non-verbal IQ (NVIQ) and processing speed. We measured personality traits, NVIQs, and processing speeds of a cohort of school pupils (aged 12-15). Participants were allocated to either a SMART intervention group or a Scratch computer coding control group, for a period of 3 months. We reassessed pupils' NVIQs and processing speeds after the 3-month intervention. We observed a significant mean increase in the SMART training group's (final n[subscript exp] = 43) NVIQs of 5.98 points, while there was a nonsignificant increase of 1.85 points in the Scratch active-control group (final n[subscript cont] = 27). We also observed an increase in processing speed across both conditions (final n[subscript exp] = 70; n[subscript cont] = 55) over Time. Our results suggest that relational skills training may be useful for improving performance on matrices tasks, and perhaps in future, accelerating children's progression toward developmental milestones.

The precise quantification of a dielectric waveguide core thickness, core width, core refractive index, and cladding refractive index across a wafer is critical for greater consistency and accuracy in photonic circuit fabrication. However, accurate wafer-scale measurements of these parameters have not yet been demonstrated. We have previously described a method for extracting these four parameters simultaneously from silicon nitride waveguides using unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometers on a single die. In this work, we show that this technique can be scaled to characterize these photonic parameters across an entire 300 mm wafer. The refractive indices of the core and cladding materials are found with relative standard deviations of the mean of 0.07% and 0.03%, respectively. The core width offset (bias) and thickness are found with relative standard deviations of 0.3% (2.6 nm) and 0.5% (1.1 nm), respectively. The extracted parameter maps suggest a radial variation of material indices and a planar variation of geometric parameters. We verify the extracted parameters by accurately predicting the performance of an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer and the degeneracy between different modes in straight waveguides.
