11. Distinct topological Hall responses in CeCu2-type EuZn2 and EuCd2 films.

Abstract

Rare-earth intermetallic compounds crystallized in AlB2-type and its low-symmetry derivative CeCu2-type structures potentially host diverse frustrated magnetic structures and rich magnetotransport phenomena. We report the film growth of CeCu2-type EuZn2 by molecular beam epitaxy and the observation of topological Hall responses highly contrastive to isostructural EuCd2. While their magnetization curves are rather similar, the topological Hall effect observed in EuZn2 is simpler, with the only one component enhanced at the magnetic transition field. EuZn2 may be a unique system for studying the magnetic domain boundary effect on topological Hall responses among the CeCu2-type rare-earth intermetallic compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SrRuO3 is a prototypical transition metal oxide that hosts rich physical properties, including itinerant ferromagnetism, high conductivity, and intrinsic Hall effect originating in the Weyl points. Recently, high-quality SrRuO3 films with residual resistivity ratios of more than 50 have been reported to exhibit quantum oscillations at low temperatures in spite of their strong electron correlation. While the origin of the oscillations has been discussed in relation to Weyl orbits based on the Weyl semimetal band structure, so far experimentally reported results are consistent neither with each other nor with theoretically expected behavior, leaving the origin of the oscillations in SrRuO3 films still elusive. In this report, we have carefully evaluated the quantum oscillations observed in three-dimensional thick SrRuO3 films with a high residual resistivity ratio of RRR = 82. We reveal the coexistence of two oscillation components both derived from two-dimensional electronic states and with slightly different masses, suggesting the involvement of surface Fermi arc states formed between different Weyl point pairs. Abstract

Nature exploits cage-like proteins for a variety of biological purposes, from molecular packaging and cargo delivery to catalysis. These cage-like proteins are of immense importance in nanomedicine due to their propensity to self-assemble from simple identical building blocks to highly ordered architecture and the design flexibility afforded by protein engineering. However, delivery of protein nanocages to the renal tubules remains a major challenge because of the glomerular filtration barrier, which effectively excludes conventional size nanocages. Here, we show that DNA-binding protein from starved cells (Dps)--the extremely small archaeal antioxidant nanocage--is able to cross the glomerular filtration barrier and is endocytosed by the renal proximal tubules. Using a model of endotoxemia, we present an example of the way in which proximal tubule-selective Dps nanocages can limit the degree of endotoxin- induced kidney injury. This was accomplished by amplifying the endogenous antioxidant property of Dps with addition of a dinuclear manganese cluster. Dps is the first-in-class protein cage nanoparticle that can be targeted to renal proximal tubules through glomerular filtration. Abstract

Searching for an ideal magnetic Weyl semimetal hosting only a single pair of Weyl points has been a focal point for systematic clarification of its unique magnetotransport derived from the interplay between topology and magnetization. Among the candidates, triangular-lattice antiferromagnet EuCd2As2 has been attracting special attention due to the prediction of the ideal Weyl semimetal phase in the ferromagnetic state; however, transport properties of low-carrier density samples have remained elusive. Here, we report molecular beam epitaxy growth of EuCd2As2 films, achieving low-hole density in the range of 1015–1016 cm−3 at low temperature. Transport measurements of such low-carrier density films reveal an insulating behavior with an activation gap of about 200 meV, which persists even in the field-induced ferromagnetic state. Abstract

Primary succession and microtopography result in environmental changes and are important processes influencing the community assembly of soil fungi in the Arctic region. In glacier forefields that contain a series of moraine ridges, both processes contribute synchronously to fungal spatial diversity. To reveal the synergistic effects of succession and microtopography, we investigated the fungal community structure and environmental variables in the moraines of the Arklio Glacier, Ellesmere Island. The study sites were established at four locations from the top to the bottom of the ridge slope within each of the three moraine ridges of different post-glacial ages. The location-dependent community composition was equally diverse in both the initial and later stages of succession, suggesting that successional time could alter the effects of microtopography on the fungal community. Moreover, our results suggest that fungal communities at different locations follow different successional trajectories, even if they have passed through the same time lapse. Such a synergistic effect of succession and microtopography of moraines does not allow for parallel changes in fungal communities among moraines or among locations, suggesting that the moraine series contributes substantially to fungal spatial diversity in the glacier forefield.
