BSMCs also generate cytokines and matricellular proteins in response to extracellular acidification through the ovarian cancer G protein-coupled receptor 1 (OGR1). Cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) are occupational agents, which cause occupational asthma. We examined the effects of Co and Ni on interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion by human BSMCs because these metals may act as ligands of OGR1.Methods: Human BSMCs were incubated in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) containing 0.1% bovine serum albumin (BSA) (0.1% BSA-DMEM) for 16 hours and stimulated for the indicated time by exchanging the medium with 0.1% BSA-DMEM containing any of the metals or pH-adjusted 0.1% BSA-DMEM. IL-6 mRNA expression was quantified via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using the real-time TaqMan technology. IL-6 was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Dexamethasone (DEX) was added 30 minutes before each stimulation. To knock down the expression of OGR1 in BSMCs, small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting OGR1 (OGR1-siRNA) was transfected to the cells and non-targeting siRNA (NT-siRNA) was used as a control.Results: Co and Ni both significantly increased IL-6 secretion in human BSMCs at 300 μM. This significant increase in IL-6 mRNA expression was observed 5 hours after stimulation. BSMCs transfected with OGR1-siRNA produced less IL-6 than BSMCs transfected with NT-siRNA in response to either Co or Ni stimulation. DEX inhibited Co- and Ni-stimulated IL-6 secretion by human BSMCs as well as pH 6.3-stimulated IL-6 secretion in a dose-dependent manner. DEX did not decrease phosphorylation of ERK1/2, p38 MAP kinase, and NF-κB p65 induced by either Co or Ni stimulation.Conclusion: Co and Ni induce secretion of IL-6 in human BSMCs through activation of OGR1. VF progression was defined as a significantly negative value of mean deviation (MD) slope at the final VF test. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to detect an association between MD slope deterioration and baseline refraction.Results: A total of 156 eyes of 156 patients were included in this analysis. Significant deterioration of MD slope was observed in 70 eyes of 70 patients (44.9%), whereas no significant deterioration was evident in 86 eyes of 86 patients (55.1%). The eyes with VF progression had significantly higher baseline refraction compared to those without apparent VF progression (-1.9±3.8 diopter [D] vs -3.5±3.4 D, P=0.0048) (mean ± standard deviation). When subject eyes were classified into four groups by the level of baseline refraction applying spherical equivalent (SE): no myopia (SE > -1D), mild myopia (-1D ≥ SE > -3D), moderate myopia (-3D ≥ SE > -6D), and severe myopia (-6D ≥ SE), the Cochran–Armitage trend analysis showed a decreasing trend in the proportion of MD slope deterioration with increasing severity of myopia (P=0.0002). The multivariate analysis revealed that baseline refraction (P=0.0108, odds ratio [OR]: 1.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.25) and intraocular pressure reduction rate (P=0.0150, OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94–0.99) had a significant association with MD slope deterioration.Conclusion: In the current analysis of Japanese patients with POAG, baseline refraction was a factor significantly associated with MD slope deterioration as well as intraocular pressure reduction rate. Upper abdominal symptoms, suggesting gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or functional dyspepsia, occur also in these patients. However, the relationship between these symptoms, concomitant with asthma, and the intensity of eosinophilic airway inflammation remains obscure. Objective: To assess the symptoms of asthma and rhinosinusitis, and to examine the relationship between the symptoms and bronchial inflammation, a new questionnaire, the G scale, was developed. To investigate the effects of GERD, dyspepsia, and rhinosinusitis on asthma symptoms and bronchial inflammation, the symptoms of asthma and rhinosinusitis obtained by the G scale, upper abdominal symptoms obtained by the modified F scale, a questionnaire for GERD and dyspepsia, and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were analyzed. Methods: A prospective, observational study was performed in four hospitals in Gunma prefecture, and a retrospective analysis was done using data obtained from five hospitals in Gunma prefecture and Fukui prefecture, Japan. A total of 252 patients diagnosed as having asthma participated in the prospective study. Results: The frequency of daytime phlegm or losing the sense of smell had a positive correlation with FeNO levels in asthmatic patients taking controller medication. Upper abdominal symptoms, as well as symptoms suggesting rhinitis, were well correlated with asthma symptoms. However, neither upper abdominal symptoms nor rhinitis symptoms increased FeNO levels, which reflect eosinophilic airway inflammation during treatment for asthma. On the other hand, the degree of upper abdominal symptoms or dyspepsia symptoms had a weak but significant negative correlation with FeNO levels. Conclusion: Daytime phlegm and losing the sense of smell suggest that eosinophilic airway inflammation persists, despite anti-inflammatory therapy, in patients with asthma. Although rhinitis and GERD made the subjective symptoms of asthma worse, they did not seem to enhance eosinophilic airway inflammation. In general, NiSn alloys are known as plating films with elegant lustre and excellent corrosion resistance. Electroplating methods have already reached a practical application level because high Sn-containing films can be obtained. On the other hand, electroless plating methods have not yet reached the level of practical application because the Sn content in the deposited film is not only low but also the corrosion resistance is not sufficient. The authors have studied in detail the composition of electroless plating baths to obtain NiSnP films with Sn content above 50 wt%. In particular, the plating bath using nickel hydroxide instead of nickel sulphate as the Ni source increased bath stability and obtained high Sn content. The effects of Ni source in the bath on the deposition films were studied. The bath using nickel hydroxide as the Ni source was almost unaffected by the bath ratio. Furthermore, the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the plating bath also varied depending on the Ni source, affecting the composition of the deposited film and the bath stability. It was confirmed that electroless plating baths using nickel hydroxide have excellent bath stability and can be applied to a relatively wide range of plating operation conditions to obtain high Sn-containing films. In addition, the corrosion resistance was improved by increasing the Sn content in the film. It was also confirmed that the NiSnP with high Sn content does not dissolve in nitric acid. We present an indirect method of estimating the strength of a shock wave, allowing on line monitoring of its reproducibility in each laser shot. This method is based on a shot-to-shot measurement of the X-ray emission from the ablated plasma by a high resolution, spatially resolved focusing spectrometer. An optical pump laser with energy of 1.0 J and pulse duration of ∼660 ps was used to irradiate solid targets or foils with various thicknesses containing Oxygen, Aluminum, Iron, and Tantalum. The high sensitivity and resolving power of the X-ray spectrometer allowed spectra to be obtained on each laser shot and to control fluctuations of the spectral intensity emitted by different plasmas with an accuracy of ∼2%, implying an accuracy in the derived electron plasma temperature of 5%-10% in pump-probe high energy density science experiments. At nano- and sub-nanosecond duration of laser pulse with relatively low laser intensities and ratio Z/A∼0.5, the electron temperature follows Te∼Ilas2/3. Thus, measurements of the electron plasma temperature allow indirect estimation of the laser flux on the target and control its shot-to-shot fluctuation. Knowing the laser flux intensity and its fluctuation gives us the possibility of monitoring shot-to-shot reproducibility of shock wave strength generation with high accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
