In this 100th year of our history, we are proud to present the graduating classes to you. In this particular year we look as much back in time as we have the pleasure of looking forward into the future. This department has existed in many years and throughout this time its students, staff and teachers have been occupied with looking forward. Because that is the essence of design envisioning the future. When we present these exceptional young people to you here today, that is what we see. The future. The students graduating here today are a remarkable group. They have studied, tried, failed and tried again. They have laughed and cried and gone through an incredible journey of growth. They have honed their skills in the field of product design and they carry with them an optimism, a humor and a determination that will allow them to not just envision our future but also shape it. In this catalogue, you will find a wide variety of interests, product categories, ideas and materials. The diversity illustrates how bold our students are in their vision of our collective future. These classes show us in their work, that diligent well thought out design work is not an outcome - it is a journey. This exhibition and catalogue are not the end of a process but really the beginning of a much longer and much more important journey into the future. To which we as a department wish all of our graduates the best of luck and that the passion that brought them here today might carry them forward in their future endeavors. To the student: On this special day one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, in this single, solitary, monumental moment in your life – is to decide, without apology, to commit to the journey. We know that wherever your paths take you, you will make a difference. Please let us share in your experiences and adventures and keep in touch with us through the alumni network. The theme of this year’s study unit in Product Aesthetics and Cultural Understanding has been “Light, Space, Identity”. The students have explored the complexity of the topic by combining a practical assignment of desiging a lighting fixture with reading, critical reflection and academic writing in an integrated process. They have also had on site experiences by a journey to New York as well as excursions in Oslo and at Kjeller. These trips have been foundational for their understanding of the topic and for their own projects. The students have met the challenges of the topic and its demanding assignment with great interest and personal engagement, and the results have become just as diverse as the theme. They display a fresh and innovative approach to lighting, adapted to our world of diverse cultural identities. Most of them are not final prototypes, which has never been the intention. They represent potentialities for further development and Production.
