Mounting evidence in recent years suggests that astrocytes, a sub-type of glial cells, not only serve metabolic and structural support for neurons and synapses but also play critical roles in the regulation of proper functioning of the nervous system. In this work, we investigate the effect of astrocytes on the spontaneous firing activity of a neuron through a combined model that includes a neuron–astrocyte pair. First, we show that an astrocyte may provide a kind of multistability in neuron dynamics by inducing different firing modes such as random and bursty spiking. Then, we identify the underlying mechanism of this behavior and search for the astrocytic factors that may have regulatory roles in different firing regimes. More specifically, we explore how an astrocyte can participate in the occurrence and control of spontaneous irregular spiking activity of a neuron in random spiking mode. Additionally, we systematically investigate the bursty firing regime dynamics of the neuron under the variation of biophysical facts related to the intracellular environment of the astrocyte. It is found that an astrocyte coupled to a neuron can provide a control mechanism for both spontaneous firing irregularity and burst firing statistics, i.e., burst regularity and size. Recent findings have revealed that not only neurons but also astrocytes, a special type of glial cells, are major players of neuronal information processing. It is now widely accepted that they contribute to the regulation of their microenvironment by cross-talking with neurons via gliotransmitters. In this context, we here study the phenomenon of vibrational resonance in neurons by considering their interaction with astrocytes. Our analysis of a neuron–astrocyte pair reveals that intracellular dynamics of astrocytes can induce a double vibrational resonance effect in the weak signal detection performance of a neuron, exhibiting two distinct wells centred at different high-frequency driving amplitudes. We also identify the underlying mechanism of this behaviour, showing that the interaction of widely separated time scales of neurons, astrocytes and driving signals is the key factor for the emergence and control of double vibrational resonance. The concept of resonance in nonlinear systems is crucial and traditionally refers to a specific realization of maximum response provoked by a particular external perturbation. Depending on the system and the nature of perturbation, many different resonance types have been identified in various fields of science. A prominent example is in neuroscience where it has been widely accepted that a neural system may exhibit resonances at microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales and benefit from such resonances in various tasks. In this context, the two well-known forms are stochastic and vibrational resonance phenomena which manifest that detection and propagation of a feeble information signal in neural structures can be enhanced by additional perturbations via these two resonance mechanisms. Given the importance of network architecture in proper functioning of the nervous system, we here present a review of recent studies on stochastic and vibrational resonance phenomena in neuronal media, focusing mainly on their emergence in complex networks of neurons as well as in simple network structures that represent local behaviours of neuron communities. From this perspective, we aim to provide a secure guide by including theoretical and experimental approaches that analyse in detail possible reasons and necessary conditions for the appearance of stochastic resonance and vibrational resonance in neural systems. Inverse Stochastic Resonance (ISR) is a phenomenon in which the average spiking rate of a neuron exhibits a minimum with respect to noise. ISR has been studied in individual neurons, but here, we investigate ISR in scale-free networks, where the average spiking rate is calculated over the neuronal population. We use Hodgkin-Huxley model neurons with channel noise (i.e., stochastic gating variable dynamics), and the network connectivity is implemented via electrical or chemical connections (i.e., gap junctions or excitatory/inhibitory synapses). We find that the emergence of ISR depends on the interplay between each neuron’s intrinsic dynamical structure, channel noise, and network inputs, where the latter in turn depend on network structure parameters. We observe that with weak gap junction or excitatory synaptic coupling, network heterogeneity and sparseness tend to favor the emergence of ISR. With inhibitory coupling, ISR is quite robust. We also identify dynamical mechanisms that underlie various features of this ISR behavior. Our results suggest possible ways of experimentally observing ISR in actual neuronal systems. We investigate inverse stochastic resonance (ISR), a recently reported phenomenon in which the spiking activity of a Hodgkin-Huxley model neuron subject to external noise exhibits a pronounced minimum as the noise intensity increases. We clarify the mechanism that underlies ISR and show that its most surprising features are a consequence of the dynamical structure of the model. Furthermore, we show that the ISR effect depends strongly on the procedures used to measure it. Our results are important for the experimentalist who seeks to observe the ISR phenomenon. Abstract: Ion channel stochasticity can influence the voltage dynamics of neuronal membrane, with stronger effects for smaller patches of membrane because of the correspondingly smaller number of channels. We examine this question with respect to first spike statistics in response to a periodic input of membrane patches including stochastic Hodgkin–Huxley channels, comparing these responses to spontaneous firing. Without noise, firing threshold of the model depends on frequency—a sinusoidal stimulus is subthreshold for low and high frequencies and suprathreshold for intermediate frequencies. When channel noise is added, a stimulus in the lower range of subthreshold frequencies can influence spike output, while high subthreshold frequencies remain subthreshold. Both input frequency and channel noise strength influence spike timing. Specifically, spike latency and jitter have distinct minima as a function of input frequency, showing a resonance like behavior. With either no input, or low frequency subthreshold input, or input in the low or high suprathreshold frequency range, channel noise reduces latency and jitter, with the strongest impact for the lowest input frequencies. In contrast, for an intermediate range of suprathreshold frequencies, where an optimal input gives a minimum latency, the noise effect reverses, and spike latency and jitter increase with channel noise. Thus, a resonant minimum of the spike response as a function of frequency becomes more pronounced with less noise. Spike latency and jitter also depend on the initial phase of the input, resulting in minimal latencies at an optimal phase, and depend on the membrane time constant, with a longer time constant broadening frequency tuning for minimal latency and jitter. Taken together, these results suggest how stochasticity of ion channels may influence spike timing and thus coding for neurons with functionally localized concentrations of channels, such as in “hot spots” of dendrites, spines or axons. Abstract: We first investigate the amplitude effect of the subthreshold periodic forcing on the regularity of the spiking events by using the coefficient of variation of interspike intervals. We show that the resonance effect in the coefficient of variation, which is dependent on the driving frequency for larger membrane patch sizes, disappears when the amplitude of the subthreshold forcing is decreased. Then, we demonstrate that the timings of the spiking events of a noisy and periodically driven neuron concentrate on a specific phase of the stimulus. We also show that increasing the intensity of the noise causes the phase probability density of the spiking events to get smaller values, and eliminates differences in the phase locking behavior of the neuron for different patch sizes. We investigate the behavior of a model neuron that receives a biophysically realistic noisy postsynaptic current based on uncorrelated spiking activity from a large number of afferents. We show that, with static synapses, such noise can give rise to inverse stochastic resonance (ISR) as a function of the presynaptic firing rate. We compare this to the case with dynamic synapses that feature short-term synaptic plasticity and show that the interval of presynaptic firing rate over which ISR exists can be extended or diminished. We consider both short-term depression and facilitation. Abstract We investigate the phenomenon of vibrational resonance (VR) in neural populations, whereby weak low-frequency signals below the excitability threshold can be detected with the help of additional high-frequency driving. The considered dynamical elements consist of excitable FitzHugh–Nagumo neurons connected by electrical gap junctions and chemical synapses. The VR performance of these populations is studied in unweighted and weighted scale-free networks. We find that although the characteristic network features – coupling strength and average degree – do not dramatically affect the signal detection quality in unweighted electrically coupled neural populations, they have a strong influence on the required energy level of the high-frequency driving force. On the other hand, we observe that unweighted chemically coupled populations exhibit the opposite behavior, and the VR performance is significantly affected by these network features whereas the required energy remains on a comparable level. Furthermore, we show that the observed VR performance for unweighted networks can be either enhanced or worsened by degree-dependent coupling weights depending on the amount of heterogeneity.
