The TAIGA experiment in the Tunka valley near Lake Baikal is planning an extension with new TAIGA-Muon scintillation detector stations. The main purpose of TAIGA is gamma-ray astronomy in the TeV to PeV energy range and cosmic ray physics. The purpose of the Taiga-Muon detectors is to measure the muon component of air showers for improving cosmic ray composition measurements as well as gamma–hadron separation above 100 TeV. Monte Carlo simulations of the experiment are done with the software packages CORSIKA and GEANT4. Extensive air showers of primary particles in the energy range 100–3000 TeV are created with CORSIKA. The trigger efficiency is calculated and used for optimization. The suppression factor of hadronic showers versus electromagnetic showers is studied, leading to an optimum depth of soil absorber (2 m), at the lowest energy range. Data on the identification efficiency for primary gamma-quanta and proton events are presented as well as the suppression factor.

One of the most informative methods of cosmic ray studies is the detection of Cherenkov light from extensive air showers (EAS). The primary energy reconstruction is possible by using the Earth’s atmosphere as a huge calorimeter . The EAS Cherenkov light array Tunka-133, with ∼ 3 km 2 geometrical area, is taking data since 2009. Tunka-133 is located in the Tunka Astrophysical Center at ∼ 50 km west of Lake Baikal. This array allows us to perform a detailed study of the energy spectrum and the mass composition in the energy range from 6 ⋅ 1 0 15 eV to 1 0 18 eV . Most of the ongoing efforts are focused on the construction of the first stage of the detector TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy). The latter is designed for the study of gamma rays and charged cosmic rays in the energy range of 1 0 13 eV – 1 0 18 eV . The TAIGA prototype will consist of ∼ 100 wide angle timing Cherenkov stations (TAIGA-HiSCORE) and three IACTs deployed over an area of ∼ 1 km 2 . The installation of the array is planned to be finished in 2019 while the data-taking can start already during the commissioning phase. The joint reconstruction of energy, direction, and core position of the imaging and non-imaging detectors will allow us to increase the distance between the IACTs up to 800 m, therefore providing a low-cost, highly sensitive detector. The relatively low cost together with the high sensitivity for energies ≥ 30–50 TeV make this pioneering technique very attractive for exploring galactic PeVatrons and cosmic rays. In addition to the Cherenkov light detectors we intend to deploy surface and underground muon detectors over an area of 1 km 2 with a total area of about 1000 m 2 . The results of the first season of coincident operation of the first ∼ 4 m diameter IACT with an aperture of ∼ 10°with 30 stations of TAIGA-HiSCORE will be presented.

An experiment on the measurements of the energy deposit of inclined cosmic ray muon bundles is being conducted at the experimental complex NEVOD (MEPhI). The complex includes the Cherenkov water calorimeter with a volume of 2000 m3 and the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR with a total area of 70 m2. The DECOR data are used to determine the local muon densities in the bundle events and their arrival directions, while the energy deposits (and hence the average muon energy loss) are evaluated from the Cherenkov calorimeter response. Average energy loss carries information about the mean muon energy in the bundles. The detection of the bundles in a wide range of muon multiplicities and zenith angles gives the opportunity to explore the energy range of primary cosmic ray particles from about 10 to 1000 PeV in the frame of a single experiment with a relatively small compact setup. Experimental results on the dependence of the muon bundle energy deposit on the zenith angle and the local muon density are presented and compared with expectations based on simulations of the EAS muon component with the CORSIKA code.

Results of analysis of experimental data on cascade showers with energies of 0.1 – 10 TeV initiated by muons in the Cherenkov water detector NEVOD are presented. The method of selection and reconstruction of cascade parameters in the volume of the detector is discussed. Experimental distributions of cascade axes in zenith angle and energy spectrum of cascades are obtained. The measured distributions are compared with results of calculations.

The calibration telescope system of the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector is described. Scintillation counters are used in the setup as detecting elements. The detection system is equipped with logical and amplitude channels and provides the calibration of the Cherenkov water detector. It can also be used to investigate the electron and muon components of an extensive air shower. A method for amplitude calibration of the scintillation counters is described, with which it is possible to estimate the number of detected charged particles. The results for the 1.5-year operation of the setup as a detector of extensive air showers are presented.

The physics motivations and advantages of the new TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) detector are presented. TAIGA aims at gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. For the energy range 30 – 200 TeV the sensitivity of 10 km2 area TAIGA array for the detection of local sources is expected to be 5 × 10-14 erg cm-2 sec-1 for 300 h of observations. Reconstruction of the given EAS energy, incoming direction and its core position, based on the timing TAIGA-HiSCORE data, allows one to increase a distance between the IACTs up to 600-1000 m. The low investments together with the high sensitivity for energies ≥ 30-50 TeV make this pioneering technique very attractive for exploring the galactic PeVatrons and cosmic rays. At present the TAIGA first stage has been constructed in Tunka valley, 50 km West from the Lake Baikal. The first experimental results of the TAIGA first stage are presented.

To solve the problem of the excess of multi-muon events observed in several cosmic ray experiments at ultra-high energies (so-called “muon puzzle”), an analysis of the energy characteristics of the muon component of extensive air showers (EAS) is required. A possible approach to such investigations is the measurement of the energy deposit of muon bundles in the detector, which provides information on the mean muon energy. In the experiment now being conducted at the NEVOD-DECOR complex, the local muon density and EAS arrival direction are determined according to the data of the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR, whereas the energy deposit is measured by means of the Cherenkov water calorimeter NEVOD. Results of the measurements of the energy deposit of inclined muon bundles based on the data accumulated during more than 23,200 h observations in 2012 – 2016 are presented and compared with simulations performed by means of the CORSIKA code.

TAIGA stands for "Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy" and is a project to build a complex, hybrid detector system for ground-based gamma- ray astronomy from a few TeV to several PeV, and for cosmic-ray studies from 100 TeV to 1 EeV. TAIGA will search for "PeVatrons" (ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources) and measure the composition and spectrum of cosmic rays in the knee region (100 TeV - 10 PeV) with good energy resolution and high statistics. TAIGA will include Tunka-HiSCORE (an array of wide-angle air Cherenkov stations), an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, an array of particle detectors, both on the surface and underground, and the TUNKA-133 air Cherenkov array.

Up to several 10s of TeV, Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) have proven to be the instruments of choice for GeV/TeV gamma-ray astronomy due to their good reconstrucion quality and gamma-hadron separation power. However, sensitive observations at and above 100 TeV require very large effective areas (10 km2 and more), which is difficult and expensive to achieve.The alternative to IACTs are shower front sampling arrays (non-imaging technique or timing-arrays) with a large area and a wide field of view. Such experiments provide good core position, energy and angular resolution, but only poor gamma-hadron separation. Combining both experimental approaches, using the strengths of both techniques, could optimize the sensitivity to the highest energies.The TAIGA project plans to combine the non-imaging HiSCORE [8] array with small (~10m2) imaging telescopes. This paper covers simulation results of this hybrid approach.

The gamma-ray energy regime beyond 10 TeV is crucial for the search for the most energetic Galactic accelerators. The energy spectra of most known gamma-ray emitters only reach up to few 10s of TeV, with 80 TeV from the Crab Nebula being the highest energy so far observed significantly. Uncovering their spectral shape up to few 100 TeV could answer the question whether some of these objects are cosmic ray Pevatrons, i.e. Galactic PeV accelerators.Sensitive observations in this energy range and beyond require very large effective detector areas of several 10s to 100 square-km. While imaging air Cherenkov telescopes have proven to be the instruments of choice in the GeV to TeV energy range, very large area telescope arrays are limited by the number of required readout channels per instrumented square-km (due to the large number of channels per telescope). Alternatively, the shower-front sampling technique allows to instrument large effective areas and also naturally provides large viewing angles of the instrument. Solely measuring the shower front light density and timing (hence timing- arrays), the primary particle properties are reconstructed on the basis of the measured lateral density function and the shower front arrival times. This presentation gives an overview of the technique, its goals, and future perspective.

A technique for the reconstruction of cascade profiles by means of Cherenkov radiation in the water of the NEVOD detector is discussed. NEVOD is equipped with a dense spatial lattice of optical modules. The analyzed cascades have been generated either along near-horizontal muons (zenith angles between 85 and 90°), which's tracks are reconstructed by means of the tracking detector DECOR, or by muons with unknown tracks over a wider zenith angle range of 50-90°. Mean cascade profiles and energy spectra of cascades measured during the experimental series of about 7950 hours of ‘live time’ are presented.

The use of quasi-spherical modules with several PMTs with flat photocathodes in Cherenkov water detectors is discussed. Properties of the response of such modules are examined. The characteristics of the quasi-spherical module with six PMTs that is used in the Cherenkov water calorimeter NEVOD are considered. The results of studying the isotropy of the amplitude response of this module and the quality of reconstruction of light direction with a single module and with a group of modules are demonstrated.
