1. Physical activity of children and youth with disabilities and the effect on participation in meaningful leisure-time activities

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to collect data of the physical activity of children and youth with a disability as well as their frequency of participation in meaningful leisure-time activities. For the first time in Germany, the potential of physical activity and of joining a sports club to influence participation in other areas of life is evaluated. Methods: 408 pupils (10–19y.) with intellectual, physical or visual disability participated, wearing an accelerometer and answering questions. Parents filled out a questionnaire on the frequency of participation and the severity of the disability. Differences in the pa rticipation according to age, gender, severity of disability, sports club membership, and the activity levels were analyzed using nonparametric tests and bivariate correlations. Results: Frequency of participation differs between gender and age groups and is in part influenced by the disability. Participants seldom belong to sports clubs and their activity level is rather low. Attending a sports club has many positive effects on participation and supports physical activity. Conclusion: Sports programs that include all children and youth need to be expanded. Physicians and well-trained coaches may allay parents’ doubts of whether their child is able to participate in a sports club.

2. Effect of Indoor Climbing on Occupational Self-Efficacy and Employability: Results of a 10-Month Randomised Controlled Study of Persons with Intellectual Disability

Abstract

(1) Background: Indoor climbing has different effects at various levels, including physical, psychological, and social ones. It is of high interest to assess whether social skills developed through climbing can be transferred to another environment, such as the working environment. This study investigates the effects of indoor climbing on employability and occupational self-efficacy of people with intellectual disability, who possess lower levels of social competences in general. (2) Methods: A randomised controlled study (RCT) experimental study design with three groups was formed—one intervention (IG) and two control groups (CGI&II). For 10 months, the IG went climbing (two times per week), whereas the first CG followed a sports programme and the second CG served as controls. (3) Results: IG participants showed significant improvement in mental and somatic health over time. Regarding occupational self-efficacy, females had a significantly lower mean. Nevertheless, only the IG’s female participants mean increased significantly over time. (4) Conclusions: Indoor climbing can be effective for improving occupational health and can be beneficial for specific groups; however, additional research is needed to further specify the influence of indoor climbing on a wider variety of aspects of the life of people with intellectual disability.

Abstract

​Mit der Teilhabe am Verkehrssystem werden Zugänge zu unterschiedlichen Lebensbereichen geöffnet. Für (junge) Menschen mit geistiger Beeinträchtigung können diese aufgrund bestehender Barrieren an Herausforderungen geknüpft sein, die Exklusionsrisiken bedingen. Vera Tillmann setzt sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit den bestehenden und potenziellen Teilhabechancen für (junge) Menschen mit geistiger Beeinträchtigung auseinander. Differenziert bearbeitet wird dies mit Bezug zum Lebensbereich Freizeit sowie dem Konzept der Lebensqualität. In der empirischen Untersuchung werden die Verknüpfungen und Zusammenhänge mit Hilfe multimethodischer Erhebungs- und Analyseverfahren bearbeitet.​
