Water uptake by plant roots is an important component of the soil water balance. Predicting to what extent potential transpiration from the canopy, that is, transpiration demand, can be met by supply of water from the soil through the root system is crucial to simulate the actual transpiration and assess vegetation water stress. In models that simulate the dynamics of vertical soil water content profiles as a function of water fluxes and soil water potential gradients, the root water uptake (RWU) distribution is represented by macroscopic sink terms. We present RWU functions that calculate sink terms based on a mechanistic model of water flow in the soil–root system. Based on soil–root hydraulics, we define α‐supply functions representing the maximal uptake by the root system from a certain soil depth when the root collar water potential equals the wilting point, ω‐supply factors representing the maximal supply from the entire root system, and a critical ωc factor representing the potential transpiration demand. These functions and factors are subsequently used to calculate RWU distributions directly from potential transpiration or demand and the soil water potentials. Unlike currently used approaches, which define α‐stress functions and ω factors representing ratios of actual uptake to uptake demand, the supply‐based formulations can be derived directly from soil and root hydraulic properties and can represent processes like root hydraulic redistribution and hydraulic lift. The two‐term infiltration equation I(t)=St+At$I(t) = S\sqrt {t} + A t$ is commonly used to determine the sorptivity, S$S$(LT−1/2)$({\text{LT}}^{-1/2})$, and product, A=cKs$A = c K_{\text{s}}$(LT−1)$({\text{LT}}^{-1})$, of the dimensionless multiple c$c$ and saturated soil hydraulic conductivity Ks$K_{\text{s}}$(LT−1)$({\text{LT}}^{-1})$ from cumulative vertical infiltration measurements I∼1,...,I∼n$\tilde{I}_{1},\ldots,\tilde{I}_{n}$ (L) at times t1,...,tn$t_{1},\ldots,t_{n}$ (T). This reduced form of the quasi‐analytical power series solution of Richardson's equation of Philip enjoys a solid physical underpinning but at the expense of a limited time validity. Using simulated infiltration data, Jaiswal et al. have shown this time validity to equal about 2.5 cm of cumulative infiltration. The goals of this work are twofold. First, we investigate the extent to which cumulative infiltration measurements larger than 2.5 cm bias the estimates of S$S$ and Ks$K_{\text{s}}$. Second, we investigate the impact of epistemic errors on the inferred time validities and parameters. Partial infiltration curves up to 2.5 cm of cumulative vertical infiltration improve substantially the agreement between actual and least squares estimates of S$S$ and Ks$K_{\text{s}}$. But this only holds if the data generating infiltration process follows Richardson's equation and experimental conditions satisfy assumptions of soil homogeneity and a uniform initial water content. Otherwise, autocorrelated cumulative infiltration residuals will bias the least squares estimates of S$S$ and Ks$K_{\text{s}}$. Our findings reiterate and reinvigorate earlier conclusions of Haverkamp et al. and show that epistemic errors deteriorate the physical significance of the coefficients of infiltration functions. As a result, the parameters of infiltration functions cannot simply be used in storm water and vadose zone flow models to forecast runoff and recharge at field and landscape scales unless these predictions are accompanied by realistic uncertainty bounds. We conclude that the time validity of Philip's two‐term equation is an elusive theoretical quantity with arbitrary physical meaning. Electromagnetic (EM) coupling effects including both inductive and capacitive coupling have long been an essential problem in broad-band spectral electrical impedance tomography (sEIT) measurements at the field scale. Efforts have been made to remove EM coupling numerically or to suppress the effects by modified data acquisition strategies. For near-surface applications with relatively small survey layouts, inductive coupling can be well removed in the mHz to kHz frequency range. With the use of shielded coaxial cables and so-called active electrodes where the amplifiers are mounted at the electrodes, capacitive coupling in sEIT measurements can also be reduced. However, it remains challenging to cope with capacitive coupling between the cable shield and the ground, especially in resistive field conditions. The aim of this study is to deal with this type of capacitive coupling effect by identifying and filtering out sEIT measurements that are strongly affected by capacitive coupling. Based on a correction method for capacitive coupling proposed in a previous study, an approach to estimate measurement errors due to capacitive coupling is presented first. In the second step, a workflow was proposed to calculate the capacitive coupling strength (CCS) for each electrode configuration, which is defined as the ratio of the imaginary part of the impedance induced by capacitive coupling and the imaginary part of the impedance due to the subsurface electrical conductivity. In the final step, measurements with low CCS were selected for inversion and the results were compared with inversion results obtained using the previously developed correction approach. It was found that the filtering method based on CCS is more capable in tackling capacitive coupling compared to using model-based corrections. Soil moisture is an essential climate variable of the Earth system. Understanding its spatiotemporal dynamics is essential for predicting weather patterns and climate variability, monitoring and mitigating the effects and occurrence of droughts and floods, improving irrigation in agricultural areas, and sustainably managing water resources. Here we review in depth how soils can remember information on soil moisture anomalies over time, as embedded in the concept of soil moisture memory (SMM). We explain the mechanisms underlying SMM and explore its external and internal drivers; we also discuss the impacts of SMM on different land surface processes, focusing on soil‐plant‐atmosphere coupling. We explore the spatiotemporal variability, seasonality, locality, and depth‐dependence of SMM and provide insights into both improving its characterization in land surface models and using satellite observations to quantify it. Finally, we offer guidance for further research on SMM. Analogous to human psychology, which seeks to understand how a person's/society's memory influences his/her present and future behavior, understanding soil moisture memory encourages consideration of how such memory determines present state and might determine future behavior of soils exposed to environmental disturbances. Soil moisture memory can be affected by a variety of factors, both external (e.g., weather extremes) and internal (soil's unique properties). It affects everything from the air to the way our landscapes respond to disasters like droughts, wildfires, and floods. We also studied how this phenomenon affects the balance of water and energy in our environment, the health of our plants, and even how it communicates with the atmosphere. We show how it can change depending on where you are on the planet, the time of year, and how deep you dig into the soil. We offer scientists insights into how weather and land surface models can become more accurate by accounting for soil moisture memory. Its understanding not only helps us predict and manage our environment, but also provides opportunities for exciting scientific discoveries. Plant water uptake and plant and soil water status are important for the soil water balance and plant growth. They depend on atmospheric water demand and the accessibility of soil water to plant roots, which is in turn related to the hydraulic properties of the root system and the soil around root segments. We present a simulation model that describes water flow in the soil–plant system mechanistically considering both root and soil hydraulic properties. We developed an approach to upscale three‐dimensional (3D) flow in the soil toward root segments of a 3D root architecture to a model that considers one‐dimensional flow between horizontal soil layers and radial flow to root segments in that layer. The upscaled model couples upscaled linear flow equations in the root system with an analytical solution of the nonlinear radial flow equation between the soil and roots. The upscaled model avoids simplifying assumptions about root hydraulic properties and water potential drops near roots made in, respectively, soil‐ and root‐centered models. Xylem water potentials and soil–root interface potentials are explicitly simulated and show, respectively, large variations with depth and large deviations from bulk soil water potentials under dry soil conditions. Accounting for hydraulic gradients in the soil around root segments led to an earlier but slower reduction of transpiration during a drought period and a better plant water status with higher nighttime plant water potentials. Renewable energy is recognized in Africa as a means for climate change mitigation, but also to provide access to electricity in sub‐Saharan Africa, where three‐quarters of the global population without electricity resides. Reliable and highly resolved renewable energy potential (REP) information is indispensable to support power plants expansion. Existing atmospheric data sets over Africa that are used for REP estimates are often characterized by data gaps, or coarse resolution. With the aim to overcome these challenges, the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) Numerical Weather Prediction (ICON‐NWP) model in its Limited Area Mode (ICON‐LAM) is implemented and run over southern Africa in a hindcast dynamical downscaling setup at a convection‐permitting 3.3 km horizontal resolution. The simulation time span covers contrasting solar and wind weather years from 2017 to 2019. To assess the suitability of the novel simulations for REP estimates, the simulated hourly 10 m wind speed (sfcWind) and hourly surface solar irradiance (rsds) are extensively evaluated against a large compilation of in situ observations, satellite, and composite data products. ICON‐LAM reproduces the spatial patterns, temporal evolution, the variability, and absolute values of sfcWind sufficiently well, albeit with a slight overestimation and a mean bias (mean error (ME)) of 1.12 m s−1 over land. Likewise the simulated rsds with an ME of 50 W m−2 well resembles the observations. This new ICON simulation data product will be the basis for ensuing REP estimates that will be compared with existing lower resolution data sets. Renewable energy is broadly accepted as an important solution for Africa to fill the power supply gap and to mitigate climate change. Renewable energy potential (REP) information is thereby imperative for the expansion of renewable energy power planning. With conventional REP estimates, challenges are often linked to the meteorological input data, due to either the relatively coarse spatial resolution, data gaps in space and time, or data quality in general. In this study, we implemented and ran the atmospheric model ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) from the German Weather Service and partners at 3 km high‐resolution. The renewable energy variables wind speed and solar irradiance from these simulations are evaluated against an extensive in situ observations data set, as well as satellite, and other composite data products. In a comparison with more than 200 stations from three different in situ observation networks, it can be shown that ICON can reproduce REP‐related variables with a level of sophistication that the data is likely to offer added value over conventional inputs to REP assessments. The study is an example on how numerical models can fill in gaps in data‐scarce regions to produce useable information. This comment challenges Gao et al. (2023)'s perspective rejecting the role of soil processes in hydrology. We argue that the authors present a false dichotomy between soil-centric and ecosystem-centric views. These two views of hydrology are complementary and reflect on the inherent multiscale complexity of hydrology where soil processes dominate at certain scales but other processes may become important at catchment scale. We recognize the need for a new scale aware framework that reconciles the interplay between soil processes at small scales with emergent behaviors driven by vegetation, topography and climate at large scales. Data assimilation plays a dual role in advancing the "scientific" understanding and serving as an "engineering tool" for the Earth system sciences. Land data assimilation (LDA) has evolved into a distinct discipline within geophysics, facilitating the harmonization of theory and data and allowing land models and observations to complement and constrain each other. Over recent decades, substantial progress has been made in the theory, methodology, and application of LDA, necessitating a holistic and in‐depth exploration of its full spectrum. Here, we present a thorough review elucidating the theoretical and methodological developments in LDA and its distinctive features. This encompasses breakthroughs in addressing strong nonlinearities in land surface processes, exploring the potential of machine learning approaches in data assimilation, quantifying uncertainties arising from multiscale spatial correlation, and simultaneously estimating model states and parameters. LDA has proven successful in enhancing the understanding and prediction of various land surface processes (including soil moisture, snow, evapotranspiration, streamflow, groundwater, irrigation and land surface temperature), particularly within the realms of water and energy cycles. This review outlines the development of global, regional, and catchment‐scale LDA systems and software platforms, proposing grand challenges of generating land reanalysis and advancing coupled land‒atmosphere DA. We lastly highlight the opportunities to expand the applications of LDA from pure geophysical systems to coupled natural and human systems by ingesting a deluge of Earth observation and social sensing data. The paper synthesizes current LDA knowledge and provides a steppingstone for its future development, particularly in promoting dual driven theory‐data land processes studies. Land surface models (LSMs) are an important tool for advancing our knowledge of the Earth system. LSMs are constantly improved to represent the various terrestrial processes in more detail. High-quality data, freely available from various observation networks, are being used to improve the prediction of terrestrial states and fluxes of water and energy. To optimize LSMs with observations, data assimilation methods and tools have been developed in the past decades. We apply the coupled Community Land Model version 5 (CLM5) and Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF) system (CLM5-PDAF) for 13 forest field sites throughout Europe covering different climate zones. The goal of this study is to assimilate in situ soil moisture measurements into CLM5 to improve the modeled evapotranspiration fluxes. The modeled fluxes will be evaluated using the predicted evapotranspiration fluxes with eddy covariance (EC) systems. Most of the sites use point-scale measurements from sensors placed in the ground; however, for three of the forest sites we use soil water content data from cosmic-ray neutron sensors, which have a measurement scale closer to the typical land surface model grid scale and EC footprint. Our results show that while data assimilation reduced the root-mean-square error for soil water content on average by 56 % to 64 %, the root-mean-square error for the evapotranspiration estimation is increased by 4 %. This finding indicates that only improving the soil water content (SWC) estimation of state-of-the-art LSMs such as CLM5 is not sufficient to improve evapotranspiration estimates for forest sites. To improve evapotranspiration estimates, it is also necessary to consider the representation of leaf area index (LAI) in magnitude and timing, as well as uncertainties in water uptake by roots and vegetation parameters. The continuous monitoring of soil water content is commonly carried out using low-frequency capacitance sensors that require a site-specific calibration to relate sensor readings to apparent dielectric bulk permittivity (Kb) and soil water content (θ). In fine-textured soils, the conversion of Kb to θ is still challenging due to temperature effects on the bound water fraction associated with clay mineral surfaces, which is disregarded in factory calibrations. Here, a multi-point calibration approach accounts for temperature effects on two soils with medium to high clay content. A calibration strategy was developed using repacked soil samples in which the Kb-θ relationship was determined for temperature (T) steps from 10 to 40 °C. This approach was tested using the GS3 and TEROS-12 sensors (METER Group, Inc. Pullman, WA, USA; formerly Decagon Devices). Kb is influenced by T in both soils with contrasting T-Kb relationships. The measured data were fitted using a linear function θ = a K b + b with temperature-dependent coefficients a and b. The slope, a(T), and intercept, b(T), of the loam soil were different from the ones of the clay soil. The consideration of a temperature correction resulted in low RMSE values, ranging from 0.007 to 0.033 cm3 cm−3, which were lower than the RMSE values obtained from factory calibration (0.046 to 0.11 cm3 cm−3). However, each experiment was replicated only twice using two different sensors. Sensor-to-sensor variability effects were thus ignored in this study and will be systematically investigated in a future study. Finally, the applicability of the proposed calibration method was tested at two experimental sites. The spatial-average θ from a network of GS3 sensors based on the new calibration fairly agreed with the independent area-wide θ from the Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS). Land surface modelling runs with CLM5 over Africa at 3 km resolution were carried out and we assessed the impact of different sources of soil information and different upscaling strategies of the soil information, also in combination with different atmospheric forcings and different temporal resolutions of those atmospheric forcings. FAO and SoilGrids250m were used as soil information. SoilGrids information at 250 m resolution was upscaled to the 3 km grid scale by three different methods: (i) random selection of one of the small SoilGrids250m grid cells contained in the model grid cell; (ii) arithmetic averaging of SoilGrids soil texture values and (iii) selection of the dominant soil texture. These different soil model inputs were combined with different atmospheric forcings model inputs, which provide inputs at different temporal resolutions: CRUNCEPv7 (6-hourly input resolution), GSWPv3 (3-hourly) and WFDE5 (hourly). We found that varying the source of soil texture information (FAO or SoilGrids250m) influences model water balance outputs more than the upscaling methodology of the soil texture maps. However, for high temporal resolution of atmospheric forcings (WFDE5) the different soil texture upscaling methods result in large differences in simulated evapotranspiration, surface runoff and subsurface runoff at the local and regional scales related to the higher resolution representation of rainfall intensity in the model. The upscaling methodology of fine scale soil texture information influences land surface model simulation results, but only clearly in combination with high temporal resolution atmospheric forcings. The dynamic interaction between subsurface flow and soil mechanics is often simplified in the stability assessment of variably saturated landslide-prone hillslopes. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of conventional simplifications in coupling and modeling strategies on stability assessment of such hillslopes in response to precipitation using the local factor of safety (LFS) concept. More specifically, it investigates (1) the impact of neglecting poroelasticity, (2) transitioning from full coupling between hydrological and mechanical models to sequential coupling, and (3) reducing the two-phase flow system to a one-phase flow system (Richards' equation). Two rainfall scenarios, with the same total amount of rainfall but two different relatively high (4 mm h−1) and low (1 mm h−1) intensities are considered. The simulation results of the simplified approaches are compared to a comprehensive, fully coupled poroelastic hydromechanical model with a two-phase flow system. It was found that the most significant difference from the comprehensive model occurs in areas experiencing the most transient changes due to rainfall infiltration in all three simplified models. Among these simplifications, the transformation of the two-phase flow system to a one-phase flow system showed the most pronounced impact on the simulated local factor of safety (LFS), with a maximum increase of +21.5% observed at the end of the high-intensity rainfall event. Conversely, using a rigid soil without poroelasticity or employing a sequential coupling approach with no iteration between hydromechanical parameters has a relatively minor effect on the simulated LFS, resulting in maximum increases of +2.0% and +1.9%, respectively. In summary, all three simplified models yield LFS results that are reasonably consistent with the comprehensive poroelastic fully coupled model with two-phase flow, but simulations are more computationally efficient when utilizing a rigid porous media and one-phase flow based on Richards' equation. Non‐invasive imaging of processes within the soil–plant continuum, particularly root and soil water distributions, can help optimize agricultural practices such as irrigation and fertilization. In this study, in‐situ time‐lapse horizontal crosshole ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurements and root images were collected over three maize crop growing seasons at two minirhizotron facilities (Selhausen, Germany). Root development and GPR permittivity were monitored at six depths (0.1–1.2 m) for different treatments within two soil types. We processed these data in a new way that gave us the information of the "trend‐corrected spatial permittivity deviation of vegetated field," allowing us to investigate whether the presence of roots increases the variability of GPR permittivity in the soil. This removed the main non‐root‐related influencing factors: static influences, such as soil heterogeneities and rhizotube deviations, and dynamic effects, such as seasonal moisture changes. This trend‐corrected spatial permittivity deviation showed a clear increase during the growing season, which could be linked with a similar increase in root volume fraction. Additionally, the corresponding probability density functions of the permittivity variability were derived and cross‐correlated with the root volume fraction, resulting in a coefficient of determination (R2) above 0.5 for 23 out of 46 correlation pairs. Although both facilities had different soil types and compaction levels, they had similar numbers of good correlations. A possible explanation for the observed correlation is that the presence of roots causes a redistribution of soil water, and therefore an increase in soil water variability.
