Abstract

By the end of 2018, 42 years after the landing of the two Viking seismometers on Mars, InSight will deploy onto Mars’ surface the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument; a six-axes seismometer equipped with both a long-period three-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) instrument and a three-axes short-period (SP) instrument. These six sensors will cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 Hz to 50 Hz, with possible extension to longer periods. Data will be transmitted in the form of three continuous VBB components at 2 sample per second (sps), an estimation of the short period energy content from the SP at 1 sps and a continuous compound VBB/SP vertical axis at 10 sps. The continuous streams will be augmented by requested event data with sample rates from 20 to 100 sps. SEIS will improve upon the existing resolution of Viking’s Mars seismic monitoring by a factor of ∼2500 at 1 Hz and ∼200000 at 0.1 Hz. An additional major improvement is that, contrary to Viking, the seismometers will be deployed via a robotic arm directly onto Mars’ surface and will be protected against temperature and wind by highly efficient thermal and wind shielding. Based on existing knowledge of Mars, it is reasonable to infer a moment magnitude detection threshold of Mw∼3 at 40∘ epicentral distance and a potential to detect several tens of quakes and about five impacts per year. In this paper, we first describe the science goals of the experiment and the rationale used to define its requirements. We then provide a detailed description of the hardware, from the sensors to the deployment system and associated performance, including transfer functions of the seismic sensors and temperature sensors. 3. Quantum Field Theory with Electric-Magnetic Duality and Spin-Mass Duality but Without Grand Unication and Supersymmetry

Abstract

I present a generalization of quantum electrodynamics which includes Diracmagnetic monop oles and the Salam magnetic photon. This quantum electromagnetodynamics has many attractive features. (1) It explains the quantization of electric charge. (2) It describes symmetrized Maxwell equations. (3) It is manifestly covariant. (4) It describes local four-potentials. (5) It avoids the unphysicalDirac string. (6) It predicts a second kind of electromagnetic radiation which can be veried by a tabletop experiment. An eect of this radiation may have been observed by August Kundt in 1885. Furthermore I discuss a generalization of General Relativity which includes Cartan's torsion. I discuss the mathematical denition, concrete description, and physical meaning of Cartan's torsion. I argue that the electric-magnetic duality of quantum electromagnetodynamics is analogous to the spin-mass duality of Einstein-Cartan theory. A quantum version of this theory requires that the torsion tensor corresponds to a spin-3 boson called tordion which is shown to have a rest mass close to the Planck mass. Moreover I present an empirically satised fundamental equation of unied eld theory which includes the fundamental constants of electromagnetism and gravity. I conclude with the remark that the concepts presented here require neither Grand Unication nor supersymmetry.

Abstract

International audience; Good fiction imitates facts. Plato declared that his Atlantis tale is philosophical fiction invented to describe his fictitious ideal state in the case of war. I suggest that Plato used three historical elements for this tale. (i) Greek tradition on Mycenaean Athens for the description of ancient Athens, (ii) Egyptian records on the wars of the Sea Peoples for the description of the war of the Atlanteans, and (iii) oral tradition from Syracuse about Tartessos for the description of the city and geography of Atlantis.

Abstract

This article starts with the mathematical definition, concrete description, and physical meaning of Cartan's torsion. I proceed with the argumentation that torsion is required for the description of intrinsic spin. Moreover I argue that the duality between curvature and torsion is analogous to the duality between electricity and magnetism. I conclude this article by pointing out that the aligned rotation axes of the galaxies of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster may be interpreted as a topological defect generated by torsion., 5 pages, latex

10. Algebras with actions and automata

Abstract

In the present paper we want to give a common structure theory of left action, group operations, R-modules and automata of different types defined over various kinds of carrier objects: sets, graphs, presheaves, sheaves, topological spaces (in particular: compactly generated Hausdorff spaces). The first section gives an axiomatic approach to algebraic structures relative to a base category B, slightly more powerful than that of monadic (tripleable) functors. In section 2 we generalize Lawveres functorial semantics to many-sorted algebras over cartesian closed categories. In section 3 we treat the structures mentioned in the beginning as many-sorted algebras with fixed scalar or input object and show that they still have an algebraic (or monadic) forgetful functor (theorem 3.3) and hence the general theory of algebraic structures applies. These structures were usually treated as one-sorted in the Lawvere-setting, the action being expressed by a family of unary operations indexed over the scalars. But this approach cannot, as the one developed here, describe continuity of the action (more general: the action to be a B-morphism), which is essential for the structures mentioned above, e.g. modules for a sheaf of rings or topological automata. Finally we discuss consequences of theorem 3.3 for the structure theory of various types of automata. The particular case of algebras with fixed natural numbers object has been studied by the authors in [23].

Abstract

Aims: Limited data are available on determinants of diabetic neuropathy as its pathogenesis is multifactorial. Since homocysteine exhibits toxic effects on vascular endothelial cells, the association between homocysteine and the prevalence of neuropathy in Type 2 diabetes mellitus was investigated., Methods: A total of 65 Type 2 diabetic patients were consecutively enrolled into the study. Neuropathy was diagnosed according to clinical symptoms, clinical examination, electrophysiological sensory testing and autonomic function testing. With regard to homocysteine-related parameters, plasma homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and renal function (creatinine, ceratinine clearance, cystatin C) were measured, and the C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene was determined., Results: Forty-three of the Type 2 diabetic patients were classified as suffering from neuropathy. Both patient groups were comparable with regard to demographic data, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, renal function and homocysteine-related vitamins. In contrast, homocysteine levels (P = 0.04) and the frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia (>or= 15 micromol/l) (P = 0.01) were significantly increased in neuropathic patients. In a logistic regression model with neuropathy as dependent variable, homocysteine (adjusted for creatinine, homocysteine-related vitamins, HbA1c and duration of diabetes) was the only significant variable associated with the prevalence of neuropathy (odds ratio for homocysteine per 5 micromol/l increase: 2.60 (95% confidence interval 1.07-6.33))., Conclusion: The data indicate that homocysteine is independently associated with the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in a collective of Type 2 diabetic patients. A larger, prospective study would be desirable to clarify the role of homocysteine in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract

A German family with 21 members affected by Alzheimer disease (AD) was studied clinically and genetically. The diagnosis was histologically verified in three affected family members. Ancestors were traced through seven generations to a couple residing in East-Westfalia during the middle of the 19th century. Dementia was often accompanied by extrapyramidal features and myoclonus. No cases of Down syndrome or hematologic malignancy occurred in this family. Clinical manifestations, temporal progression, neurological testing, and neuropathological features do not differ from the more common sporadic form of AD. The inheritance pattern is most consistent with autosomal-dominant transmission.

Abstract

In 56 persons with normal hearing and 10 patients with sensorineural hearing loss, acoustically evoked potentials were recorded at stimulus repetition rates of 10/s, 20/s, 30/s and 40/s. With a sufficiently low lower amplifier cut-off frequency, one obtains at the repetition rate of 40/s a composite response described by Galambos et al. (1981) as 40 Hz potential, which consists of the ABR evoked by the given stimulus and superposed MLR-waves evoked by the preceding stimuli. In both groups the amplitude mean value of the potentials recorded at the stimulus rate 40/s was significantly higher than at lower rates. The detectability of the near-threshold response for the subjects with normal hearing was distinctly higher than the responses recorded at lower rates.

Abstract

Violent ruptures of the spleen caused by accidents are regarded as an indication for necessary splenectomy. Experiences of modern ultrasonic surgery, e.g. in ultrasonic welding of bone fractures prompted us to experimentally investigate ultrasonic welding of spleen ruptures in dogs. We immediately obtained a safe closing of the ruptures with a durable scar and thus the method may give an alternative to splenectomy with saving of the organ.

Abstract

The endoscopic morphology of asbestos-induced pleural disease is demonstrated by typical thoracoscopic findings. Among 627 thoracoscopies, lesions induced by exposure to asbestos were found in 9.9% (50 malignant mesotheliomas of the pleura, 10 pleural hyalinoses, 2 asbestos pleurisies). This comparatively high percentage is indicative of the pathogenic relevance of asbestos in the pleuropulmonary region. In addition to describing the diffuse malignant mesotheliomas of the pleura, reference is made in the discussion to the possible occurrence of benign localized fibromatous mesotheliomas that are not clearly related to asbestos exposure.
