Abstract Forest loss and overhunting are eroding African tropical biodiversity and threatening local human food security, livelihoods, and health. Emblematic of this ecological crisis is Africa's most endangered group of monkeys, the red colobus (genus Piliocolobus). All 17 species, found in forests from Senegal in the west to the Zanzibar archipelago in the east, are threatened with extinction. Red colobus are among the most vulnerable mammals to gun hunting, typically disappearing from heavily hunted forests before most other large‐bodied animals. Despite their conservation status, they are rarely a focus of conservation attention and continue to be understudied. However, red colobus can act as critical barometers of forest health and serve as flagships for catalyzing broader African tropical forest conservation efforts. We offer a plan for conservation of red colobus and their habitats and discuss conservation and policy implications.

Abstract Conservation funding is currently limited; cost‐effective conservation solutions are essential. We suggest that the thousands of field stations worldwide can play key roles at the frontline of biodiversity conservation and have high intrinsic value. We assessed field stations’ conservation return on investment and explored the impact of COVID‐19. We surveyed leaders of field stations across tropical regions that host primate research; 157 field stations in 56 countries responded. Respondents reported improved habitat quality and reduced hunting rates at over 80% of field stations and lower operational costs per km2 than protected areas, yet half of those surveyed have less funding now than in 2019. Spatial analyses support field station presence as reducing deforestation. These “earth observatories” provide a high return on investment; we advocate for increased support of field station programs and for governments to support their vital conservation efforts by investing accordingly.

Background Components of diet known as fallback foods are argued to be critical in shaping primate dental anatomy. Such foods of low(er) nutritional quality are often non-preferred, mechanically challenging resources that species resort to during ecological crunch periods. An oft-cited example of the importance of dietary fallbacks in shaping primate anatomy is the grey-cheeked mangabey Lophocebus albigena. This species relies upon hard seeds only when softer, preferred resources are not available, a fact which has been linked to its thick dental enamel. Another mangabey species with thick enamel, the sooty mangabey Cercocebus atys, processes a mechanically challenging food year-round. That the two mangabey species are both thickly-enameled suggests that both fallback and routine consumption of hard foods are associated with the same anatomical feature, complicating interpretations of thick enamel in the fossil record. We anticipated that aspects of enamel other than its thickness might differ between Cercocebus atys and Lophocebus albigena. We hypothesized that to function adequately under a dietary regime of routine hard-object feeding, the molars of Cercocebus atys would be more fracture and wear resistant than those of Lophocebus albigena. Methods Here we investigated critical fracture loads, nanomechanical properties of enamel, and enamel decussation in Cercocebus atys and Lophocebus albigena. Molars of Cercopithecus, a genus not associated with hard-object feeding, were included for comparison. Critical loads were estimated using measurements from 2D µCT slices of upper and lower molars. Nanomechanical properties (by nanoindentation) and decussation of enamel prisms (by SEM-imaging) in trigon basins of one upper second molar per taxon were compared. Results Protocone and protoconid critical fracture loads were significantly greater in Cercocebus atys than Lophocebus albigena and greater in both than in Cercopithecus. Elastic modulus, hardness, and elasticity index in most regions of the crown were greater in Cercocebus atys than in the other two taxa, with the greatest difference in the outer enamel. All taxa had decussated enamel, but that of Cercocebus atys uniquely exhibited a bundle of transversely oriented prisms cervical to the radial enamel. Quantitative comparison of in-plane and out-of-plane prism angles suggests that decussation in trigon basin enamel is more complex in Cercocebus atys than it is in either Lophocebus albigena or Cercopithecus cephus. These findings suggest that Cercocebus atys molars are more fracture and wear resistant than those of Lophocebus albigena and Cercopithecus. Recognition of these differences between Cercocebus atys and Lophocebus albigena molars sharpens our understanding of associations between hard-object feeding and dental anatomy under conditions of routine vs. fallback hard-object feeding and provides a basis for dietary inference in fossil primates, including hominins.

ABSTRACTWild non-human primates carry many types of RNA viruses, including simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), simian foamy virus, simian T-cell leukemia virus, and hepatitis C virus. These viruses can also infect humans via zoonotic transmission through handling and consumption of primate bushmeat. Characterizing viral prevalence and shedding in natural hosts is critical to understand infection and transmission risks within and between primate species. Here, we sought to identify a robust “field-friendly” method (i.e., without freezing or refrigeration) for preserving viral RNA, specifically SIV, in primate fecal samples. Fecal samples were collected from a mantled guereza colobus (Colobus guereza) housed at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Samples were homogenized and inoculated with three concentrations (low, medium, and high) of inactivated SIV and preserved in four different storage buffers (DNA/RNA Shield, RNAlater, 95% Ethanol, and Viral Transport Medium). SIV viral RNA was then extracted from samples at four time points (1 week, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks) to determine the efficacy of each buffer for preserving SIV RNA. Quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used for the detection and quantification of viral RNA. At all concentrations, DNA/RNA Shield yielded the highest average SIV virion concentrations. We then successfully validated this approach using fecal samples from known SIV-positive and SIV-negative sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) housed at Emory National Primate Research Center. Our results indicate that DNA/RNA Shield is an optimal “field-friendly” buffer for preserving SIV RNA in fecal samples over time and may also be effective for preserving other RNA viruses in feces.IMPORTANCESimian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), which originated in African monkeys, crossed the species barrier into humans and ultimately gave rise to HIV and the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. While SIV infects over 40 primate species in sub-Saharan Africa, testing for RNA viruses in wild primate populations can be challenging. Optimizing field-friendly methods for assessing viral presence/abundance in non-invasively collected biological samples facilitates the study of viruses, including potentially zoonotic viruses, in wild primate populations. This study compares SIV RNA preservation and recovery from non-human primate feces stored in four different buffers. Our results will inform future fieldwork and facilitate improved approaches to characterizing prevalence, shedding, and transmission of RNA viruses like SIV in natural hosts including wild-living non-human primates.

The forelimbs of hominoid primates (apes) are decidedly more flexible than those of monkeys, especially at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. It is tempting to link the greater mobility of these joints to the functional demands of vertical climbing and below-branch suspension, but field-based kinematic studies have found few differences between chimpanzees and monkeys when comparing forelimb excursion angles during vertical ascent (upclimbing). There is, however, a strong theoretical argument for focusing instead on vertical descent (downclimbing), which motivated us to quantify the effects of climbing directionality on the forelimb kinematics of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys). We found that the shoulders and elbows of chimpanzees and sooty mangabeys subtended larger joint angles during bouts of downclimbing, and that the magnitude of this difference was greatest among chimpanzees. Our results cast new light on the functional importance of downclimbing, while also burnishing functional hypotheses that emphasize the role of vertical climbing during the evolution of apes, including the human lineage.

(1) Background: Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) was the causative agent of an anthrax-like fatal disease among wild chimpanzees in 2001 in Côte d’Ivoire. Before this, there had not been any description of an anthrax-like disease caused by typically avirulent Bacillus cereus. Genetic analysis found that B. cereus had acquired two anthrax-like plasmids, one a pXO1-like toxin producing plasmid and the other a pXO2-like plasmid encoding capsule. Bcbva caused animal fatalities in Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic between 2004 and 2012. (2) Methods: The pathogen had acquired plasmids in the wild and that was discovered as the cause of widespread animal fatalities in the early 2000s. Primate bones had been shipped out of the endemic zone for anthropological studies prior to the realized danger of contamination with Bcbva. Spores were isolated from the bone fragments and positively identified as Bcbva. Strains were characterized by classical microbiological methods and qPCR. Four new Bcbva isolates were whole-genome sequenced. Chromosomal and plasmid phylogenomic analysis was performed to provide temporal and spatial context to these new strains and previously sequenced Bcbva. Tau and principal component analyses were utilized to identify genetic and spatial case patterns in the Taï National Park anthrax zone. (3) Results: Preliminary studies positively identified Bcbva presence in several archival bone fragments. The animals in question died between 1994 and 2010. Previously, the earliest archival strains of Bcbva were identified in 1996. Though the pathogen has a homogeneous genome, spatial analyses of a subset of mappable isolates from Taï National Park revealed strains found closer together were generally more similar, with strains from chimpanzees and duikers having the widest distribution. Ancestral strains were located mostly in the west of the park and had lower spatial clustering compared to more recent isolates, indicating a local increase in genetic diversity of Bcbva in the park over space and time. Global clustering analysis indicates patterns of genetic diversity and distance are shared between the ancestral and more recently isolated type strains. (4) Conclusions: Our strains have the potential to unveil historical genomic information not available elsewhere. This information sheds light on the evolution and emergence of a dangerous anthrax-causing pathogen.

Anthrax is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Primarily a disease of herbivores, human infections often result from direct contact with contaminated animal products (cutaneous and inhalational anthrax) or through consumption of infected meat (gastrointestinal anthrax). The genetic near neighbor, Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva), causes an anthrax-like illness in the wildlife and livestock of west and central Africa due to the presence and expression of B. anthracis-specific virulence factors in this background. While Bcbva infections have not been reported in humans, a recent seroprevalence study detected Bcbva antibodies in the rural population around Taï National Park. This work describes the development of new TaqMan multiplex PCRs for the simultaneous detection of B. anthracis and Bcbva. The assays are designed to amplify Ba-1, capB, and lef markers in B. anthracis and genomic island IV (GI4), capB, and lef in Bcbva. Our assays allow for the rapid discrimination of B. anthracis and Bcbva and will provide insights into the molecular epidemiology of these two important pathogens that share an overlapping geographical range in west and central Africa.

Although predation avoidance is the most commonly invoked explanation for vertebrate social evolution, there is little evidence that individuals in larger groups experience lower predation rates than those in small groups. We compare the morphological and behavioural traits of mammal prey species in the Taï forest, Ivory Coast, with the diet preferences of three of their non-human predators: leopards, chimpanzees and African crowned eagles. Individual predators show marked differences in their predation rates on prey species of different body sizes, but clear patterns with prey behaviour were apparent only when differences in prey habitat use were incorporated into the analyses. Leopard predation rates are highest for terrestrial species living in smaller groups, whereas eagle predation rates are negatively correlated with group size only among arboreal prey. When prey predation rates are summed over all three predators, terrestrial species incur higher predation rates than arboreal species and, within both categories, predation rates decline with increasing prey group size and decreasing density of groups in the habitat. These results reveal that it is necessary to consider anti-predator strategies in the context of a dynamic behavioural interaction between predators and prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Morphology of the dentofacial complex of early hominins has figured prominently in the inference of their dietary adaptations. Recent theoretical analysis of craniofacial morphology of Australopithecus africanus proposes that skull form in this taxon represents adaptation to feeding on large, hard objects. A modern analog for this specific dietary specialization is provided by the West African sooty mangabey, Cercocebus atys. This species habitually feeds on the large, exceptionally hard nuts of Sacoglottis gabonensis, stereotypically crushing the seed casings using their premolars and molars. This type of behavior has been inferred for A. africanus based on mathematical stress analysis and aspects of dental wear and morphology. While postcanine megadontia, premolar enlargement and thick molar enamel characterize both A. africanus and C. atys, these features are not universally associated with durophagy among living anthropoids. Occlusal microwear analysis reveals complex microwear textures in C. atys unlike those observed in A. africanus, but more closely resembling textures observed in Paranthropus robustus. Since sooty mangabeys process hard objects in a manner similar to that proposed for A. africanus, yet do so without the craniofacial buttressing characteristic of this hominin, it follows that derived features of the australopith skull are sufficient but not necessary for the consumption of large, hard objects. The adaptive significance of australopith craniofacial morphology may instead be related to the toughness, rather than the hardness, of ingested foods.

Objectives: The relationship between radiographic grayscale and elastic modulus was determined using mandibular cortical bone of colobine monkeys. Quantification of this relationship is critical for establishing absolute measures of structural rigidity of skeletal elements., Materials and Methods: We determined the Vickers microhardness values in mandibular bone from two species of African colobine monkeys and related these values to elastic modulus through an empirically determined correlation. We also determined radiographic grayscale values from microcomputed tomographic scans of the mandible in the same regions in which microhardness was sampled. We then correlated modulus to grayscale with a power law relationship., Results: We found that elastic modulus scaled with negative allometry with respect to grayscale with an exponent of 0.77., Discussion: Our results suggest a single exponent can effectively capture the relationship of grayscale to elastic modulus and facilitate development of heterogeneous structural models for use in comparative and computational biomechanical studies., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
