The crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) is a multifaceted neuropeptide instrumental in regulating carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, reproduction, osmoregulation, molting, and metamorphosis. Despite its significance, there is a dearth of research on its metabolic impact on the gills and epidermis—key organs in osmoregulation and molting processes. This study employed CHH dsRNA injections to silence CHH gene expression in Procambarus clarkii, followed by a metabolomic analysis of the gills and epidermis using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Metabolic profiling through principal component analysis revealed the most pronounced changes at 24 h post-injection (hpi) in the epidermis and at 48 hpi in the gills. At 24 hpi, the epidermis exhibited significant modulation in 25 enrichment sets and 20 KEGG pathways, while at 48 hpi, 5 metabolite sets and 6 KEGG pathways were prominently regulated. Notably, pathways associated with amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and cofactor and vitamin metabolism were affected. A marked decrease in glucose and other carbohydrates suggested a compromised carbohydrate supply, whereas increased levels of citrate cycle intermediates implied a potential boost in energy provision. The silencing of CHH gene expression hampered the carbohydrate supply, which was possibly the main energy derived substrates. Conversely, the gills displayed significant alterations in 15 metabolite sets and 16 KEGG pathways at 48 hpi, with no significant changes at 24 hpi. These changes encompassed amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism pathways. The decline in TCA cycle intermediates pointed to a potential downregulation of the cycle, whereas a decrease in ketone bodies indicated a shift towards lipid metabolism for energy production. Additionally, increased levels of nicotinate, nicotinamide, and quinolinate were observed in both organs. Overall, CHH’s impact on the epidermis was prominent at 24 hpi and diminished thereafter, whereas its influence on metabolism in gills was delayed but intensified at 48 hpi. This differential CHH effect between gills and epidermis in P. clarkii provides new insights into the organ-specific regulatory mechanisms of CHH on energy metabolism and osmoregulation, warranting further comparative studies to elucidate the distinct roles of CHH in these organs.

Abstract Background MET dysregulation has been implicated in the development of primary and secondary resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. However, the clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of patients harboring EGFR‐sensitive mutations and de novo MET amplifications still need to be explored. Methods A total of 54 patients from our hospital with non‐small cell lung cancer harboring EGFR‐sensitive mutations and/or de novo MET amplifications were included in this study. Survival rates were estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method with log‐rank statistics. Lung cancer organoids (LCOs) were generated from patient‐derived malignant pleural effusion to perform drug sensitivity assays. Results Fifty‐four patients with the appropriate clinicopathological characteristics were enrolled. MET FISH was performed in 40 patients who were stratified accordingly into two groups: EGFR+/METamp‐ (n = 22) and EGFR+/METamp + (n = 18). Phytoplasmas are important prokaryotic pathogenic bacteria without cell walls, which were formerly known as mycoplasma-like organisms, and belong to the Mollicutes class, Candidatus Phytoplasma genus. They are widely distributed in plants and insects, and can cause serious diseases in important food crops, vegetables, fruit trees, ornamental plants and trees, resulting in huge economic losses. To date, more than 100 phytoplasma diseases have been reported in China, which are distributed throughout the country. Jujube witches'-broom, paulownia witches'-broom, wheat blue dwarf, banana bunchy top, sugarcane white leaf, rice orange leaf and mulberry dwarf represent the phytoplasma diseases causing the most serious damage in China. New phytoplasma diseases and their strains are being reported continuously, indicating that phytoplasmas are more diverse than previously thought. Phytoplasmas are mainly transmitted by insect vectors, such as leafhopper and planthopper, and can also be spread by grafting or Cuscuta australis (known as dodder). Mixed infections of phytoplasmas and viruses, bacteria, and spiroplasmas have also become a serious problem in several crops and are responsible for more synergistic losses. With the continuous development and improvement of technology, molecular biological detection has become the main technique for phytoplasma detection and identification. Currently, research on phytoplasma diseases in China mainly focuses on pathogen identification and classification, and insect vector and host diversity; however, there is less focus on pathogenicity, comparative genomics, and effect factors. More research attention has been paid to wheat blue dwarf phytoplasma, paulownia witches'-broom phytoplasma, jujube witches'-broom phytoplasma, and sugarcane white leaf phytoplasma. Other phytoplasma diseases have been reported; however, there have been no in-depth studies. In this paper, the history and present situation of phytoplasma research, and the status, distribution, and diversity of phytoplasma diseases are summarized, and some possible research directions of phytoplasma in the future in China are proposed.

Abstract Background In previous studies, the predictive role of BIM deletion polymorphism with respect to responses to epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR‐TKIs) has been controversial. The potential reasons for these inconsistent findings were unknown. Methods Data from CTONG0901 clinical trial and medical records of Guangdong Lung Cancer Institute (GLCI) were retrospectively pooled. A total of 194 and 141 EGFR‐mutant non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with first‐ and second‐generation EGFR‐TKIs were examined in the CTONG0901 and GLCI cohorts, respectively. Sixty‐eight patients were treated with third‐generation EGFR‐TKIs in the GLCI cohort. The BIM gene status was examined by next‐generation sequencing. Results The frequency of BIM deletion polymorphism was 11.3% and 17.0% in CTONG0901 and GLCI cohorts, respectively. For first‐ and second‐generation EGFR‐TKIs in CTONG0901 cohort, objective response (ORR) was 54.5% in BIM deletion group versus 56.4% in wild‐type BIM group (P = .87); disease control rate (DCR) was 90.9% versus 88.4% (P = 1.00); progression‐free survival (PFS) was 10.5 versus 11.2 months (P = .59); and overall survival (OS) was 20.5 versus 20.5 months (P = .73). In GLCI cohort, ORR was 54.2% versus 60.7% (P = .55); DCR was 91.7% versus 96.6% (P = .27); PFS was 10.1 versus 11.6 months (P = .63); and OS was 58.5 versus 45.0 months (P = .93). For third‐generation EGFR‐TKIs, ORR was 18.2% versus 63.2% (P = .02); DCR was 81.8% versus 96.5%, (P = .12); PFS was 5.8 versus 9.0 months (P = .13); and OS was 30.0 versus 24.8 months (P = .85). Cox regression analysis showed that concomitant genetic alterations could adversely affect the response to EGFR‐TKIs, but not BIM deletion. Conclusions The presence of BIM deletion showed no relation to an impaired response to first‐, second‐, and third‐generation EGFR‐TKIs in NSCLC patients. The factors influencing the response of EGFR‐TKIs were concomitant genetic alterations, but not BIM deletion.

Objectives: Recently, serum uric acid (UA) has emerged as an important independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in hypertension. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between UA levels and ascending aortic dilatation (AAD) in newly diagnosed nondiabetic hypertensive subjects. Methods: A total of 818 patients with a new diagnosis of hypertension for which they had never received treatment were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. All patients underwent comprehensive transthoracic echocardiography measurement. AAD was defined as a diameter of ascending aorta equal to or more than 35 mm. Results: There were 302 patients with AAD (mean age 69 ± 11 years; 157 male) and 516 subjects with normal ascending aorta diameters (mean age 64 ± 12 years; 158 male). Abstract Background Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of most important zoonotic viruses, and it can infect a wide range of host species. Avian HEV has been identified as the aetiological agent of big liver and spleen disease or hepatitis-splenomegaly syndrome in chickens. HEV infection is common among chicken flocks in China, and there are currently no practical measures for preventing the spread of the disease. The predominant avian HEV genotype circulating in China have been identified as genotype 3 strains, although some novel genotypes have also been identified from chicken flocks in China. Results In this study, we used a meta-transcriptomics approach to identify a new subtype of genotype 3 avian HEV in broiler chickens at a poultry farm located in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. The complete genome sequence of the avian HEV, designated CaHEV-GDSZ01, is 6655-nt long, including a 5′ UTR of 24 nt and a 3′ UTR of 125 nt (excluding the poly(A) tail), and contains three open reading frames (ORFs). Sequence analysis indicated that the complete ORF1 (4599 nt/1532 aa), ORF2 (1821 nt/606 aa) and ORF3 (264 nt/87 aa) of CaHEV-GDSZ01 share the highest nucleotide sequence identity (85.8, 86.7 and 95.8%, respectively) with the corresponding ORFs of genotype 3 avian HEV. Phylogenetic analyses further demonstrated that the avian HEV identified in this study is a new subtype of genotype 3 avian HEV. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that a new subtype of genotype 3 avian HEV is endemic in Guangdong, China, and could cause high mortality in infected chickens. This study also provides full genomic data for better understanding the evolutionary relationships of avian HEV circulating in China. Altogether, the results presented in this study suggest that more attention should be paid to avian HEV and its potential disease manifestation.

Abstract Background Novel Muscovy duck reovirus (N-MDRV), emerged in southeast China in 2002, which can infect a wide range of waterfowl and induces clinical signs and cytopathic effects that are distinct from those of classical MDRV, and continues to cause high morbidity and 5–50% mortality in ducklings. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of two novel reoviruses isolated from Muscovy ducklings in Guangdong, China. Results Two novel MDRV strains, designated as MDRV-SH12 and MDRV-DH13, were isolated from two diseased Muscovy ducklings in Guangdong province, China in June 2012 and September 2013, respectively. Sequencing of the complete genomes of these two viruses showed that they consisted of 23,418 bp and were divided into 10 segments, ranging from 1191 bp (S4) to 3959 bp (L1) in length, and all segments contained conserved sequences in the 5′ non-coding region (GCUUUU) and 3′ non-coding region (UCAUC). Pairwise sequence comparisons demonstrated that MDRV-SH12 and MDRV-DH13 showed the highest similarity with novel MDRVs. Phylogenetic analyses of the nucleotide sequences of all 10 segments revealed that MDRV-SH12 and MDRV-DH13 were clustered together with other novel waterfowl-origin reoviruses and were distinct from classical waterfowl-origin and chicken-origin reoviruses. The analyses also showed possible genetic re-assortment events in segment M2 between waterfowl-origin and chicken-origin reoviruses and the segments encoding λA, μA, μNS, σA, and σNS between classical and novel waterfowl-origin reoviruses. Potential recombination events detection in segment S2 suggests that MDRV-SH12 and MDRV-DH13 may be recombinants of classical and novel WRVs. Conclusions The results presented in this study, the full genomic data for two novel MDRV strains, will improve our understanding of the evolutionary relationships among the waterfowl-origin reoviruses circulating in China, and may aid in the development of more effective vaccines against various waterfowl-origin reoviruses.

Background: Resistance to third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) presents a major clinical challenge in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we report resistance mechanisms to abivertinib, a novel third-generation EGFR TKI, from a phase I dose-escalation/expansion study (NCT02330367). Methods: Patients with EGFR T790M-positive advanced NSCLC and progression on prior EGFR TKIs received abivertinib in dose escalation (50–350 mg twice daily [BID]) or expansion (300 mg BID) cohorts. Patients enrolled at Guangdong Lung Cancer Institute who underwent next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genomic profiling upon abivertinib progression (prior to October 30, 2018) were enrolled in this exploratory analysis. Findings: Thirty of 73 patients enrolled were eligible for resistance analysis. Upon abivertinib progression, 27 patients provided plasma samples (six patients also provided paired samples from the progression sites) and three patients only provided tissue samples from the progression sites for NGS. A heterogeneous landscape of resistance to abivertinib was observed: 15% (4/27) experienced EGFR T790M loss and 13% (4/30) developing EGFR tertiary mutations including C797S. EGFR amplification was observed in 11 patients (37%), and considered a putative resistance mechanism in seven (23%) patients. Other EGFR-independent resistance mechanisms involved CDKN2A, MET, PIK3CA, HER2, TP53, Rb1 and small-cell lung cancer transformation. Interpretation: Our findings reveal a heterogenous pattern of resistance mechanisms to abivertinib which is distinct from that previously reported with osimertinib. EGFR amplification was the most common resistance mechanism in this cohort. In this study, we aim to compare the progression-free survival (PFS) rates and side effects of induction chemotherapy based on docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil (TPF) versus cisplatin and fluorouracil (PF) in patients with locoregionally-advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma who received subsequent chemoradiotherapy. We randomly assigned 278 patients with stage III or IV NPC (without distant metastases) to receive either TPF or PF induction chemotherapy, followed by cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy every 3 weeks and intensity-modulated radiation therapy for 5 days per week. After a minimum of 2 years follow-up, a PFS benefit was observed for TPF compared to PF, though this difference was not statistically significant (84.5% vs. 77.9%, P = .380). Due to increased frequencies of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia and diarrhea, significantly more patients in the TPF group required treatment delays and dose modifications. Our findings suggest that PF induction chemotherapy has substantially better tolerance and compliance rates than TPF induction chemotherapy. However, the treatment efficacy of PF is not superior to TPF induction chemotherapy in patients with locoregionally-advanced NPC (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01536223).

Background: Although Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) is performed timely for most children with biliary atresia (BA), the native liver survival (NLS) is still poor due to the progressive liver fibrosis. Many children have to receive liver transplantation (LT) within 2 years after KPE. Early prediction of the prognosis permits the implementation of prophylactic treatments for BA children. However, studies about the prediction are limited.Objective: The purpose of this study is to establish a nomogram to predict the prognosis of BA children within 2 years after KPE.Methods: The follow-up data of 151 BA children were retrospectively reviewed, and were randomly divided into a training cohort for constructing a nomogram (n = 103) and a validation cohort (n = 48). In the training cohort, patients were divided into Group A and Group B according to whether death or LT were observed within 2 years post-KPE. Multivariate Cox regression based on the baseline characteristics, liver function indicators and LSM (liver stiffness measurement) values at KPE and 3 months after KPE was utilized for the establishment of the nomogram in predicting the prognosis of BA within 2 years after KPE. The discrimination and calibration of the nomogram were internally and externally validated.Results: Fifty-six BA children were included in Group A and 47 were included in group B. Age at KPE, METAVIR score F4, LSM at 3 months, first onset of cholangitis within 3 months, and jaundice clearance time were the independent predictors for the prognosis of BA children within 2 years after KPE (all P < 0.05). The developed nomogram based on these independent predictors showed good discrimination and calibration by the internal and external validation. Its performance was better than each predictor in predicting the prognosis (all P < 0.05).Conclusions: The established nomogram based on the indicators from the first 3 months after KPE may be useful for predicting the prognosis of BA children within 2 years post-KPE and helpful for the consideration of LT.

Pubertal molt is a vital stage in the cultivation of mature female crabs in the aquacultural industry of Scylla paramamosain. Since fasting occurs during molting, which requires a large supply of energy, internal energy reserves are critical. However, the dynamics of energy supply during pubertal molt is not clear. This study focuses on the variations of carbohydrates and lipids in serum during the pubertal molt of S. paramamosain via a metabolomics approach. Eleven lipid or carbohydrate metabolic pathways were significantly influenced postmolt. A remarkable decrease in carbohydrates in serum suggested that free sugars were consumed for energy. A significant decrease in glucose and alpha-d-glucosamine 1-phosphate showed that chitin synthesis exhausted glycogen, resulting in insufficient glucose supply. An increase in l-carnitine and acetylcarnitine, and a significant decrease in 15 fatty acyls and 8 glycerophosphocholines in serum indicated that carnitine shuttle was stimulated, and β-oxidation was upregulated postmolt. In addition, astaxanthin, ponasterone A, and riboflavin in serum were significantly decreased postmolt. Eleven potential metabolite biomarkers were identified for pubertal molt. Taken together, carbohydrates and lipids were possibly major energy reserves in pubertal molt. This study suggests that an increase in carbohydrate and lipid levels in crab feed may alleviate the effects of fasting during molt and improve farm productivity in mature female crabs.

Abstract Background Recent evidence indicates that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play pivotal roles in the regulation of cellular processes and are found to be dysregulated in a variety of cancers. LINC00261 is an lncRNA that is aberrantly expressed in gastric cancer (GC). The clinical role of LINC00261 in GC and molecular mechanisms remains to be found. Methods Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to examine LINC00261 expression in GC cell lines/tissues compared with normal epithelial cells/adjacent non-tumorous tissues. Gain and loss of function approaches were used to investigate the biological role of LINC00261 in GC cells. The effects of LINC00261 on cell viability were evaluated by MTT and colony formation assays. Wound healing assay, cell migration and invasion assays, and nude mice were used to examine the effects of LINC00261 on tumor cell metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Protein levels of LINC00261 targets were determined by western blot and immunohistochemistry. Results LINC00261 was downregulated in GC cell lines and cancerous tissues, as compared with normal gastric epithelial cells and adjacent noncancerous tissue samples. Cancer cells that survive fractionated irradiation can be radioresistant and cause tumor recurrence. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of radioresistance in cancer cells remain elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of WISP-1 in the development of radioresistance in esophageal carcinoma during fractionated irradiation. Radioresistant esophageal cancer cells were generated from normal esophageal cancer cells via fractionated irradiation, and expression levels of related proteins were determined by Western blot. Radiosensitivity of cells was established by clonogenic cell survival assays, and cell cycle distribution was evaluated by flow cytometry. Protein distributions were determined by immunofluorescence, and cell toxicity was evaluated by cell counting kit-8 assays. In vivo validations were performed in a xenograft transplantation mouse model. Our data indicate that WISP-1 plays an important role in the development of radioresistance in esophageal cancer cells during fractionated irradiation. The overexression of WISP-1 in esophageal cancer cells was associated with radioresistance. Depletion of extracellular WISP-1 by antibody neutralizing reversed radioresistance and directly induced mitotic catastrophe resulting in cell death. WISP-1 may be a candidate therapeutic target in the treatment of recurrent esophageal carcinoma after radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate surgical outcomes and prognostic factors for T4 gastric cancer treated with curative resection. METHODS: Between January 1994 and December 2008, 94 patients diagnosed with histological T4 gastric carcinoma and treated with curative resection were recruited. Patient characteristics, surgical complications, survival, and prognostic factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Postoperative morbidity and mortality were 18.1% and 2.1%, respectively. Multivariate analysis indicated lymph node metastasis (hazard ratio, 2.496; 95% confidence interval, 1.218-5.115; p = 0.012) was independent prognostic factor. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with T4 gastric cancer, lymph node metastasis was associated with poorer survival. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy or aggressive adjuvant chemotherapy after radical resection was strongly recommended for these patients.

To thoroughly examine the output characteristics of a semi-active vehicle suspension system featuring a magneto-rheological (MR) damper, a filtered white noise method and a first-order Padé approximation are used to model the random road excitation affecting the front and rear wheels. The rheological properties of the selected MR fluid are carefully analyzed, and a double-ended MR damper is developed based on these properties. This process involves the design, fabrication, and testing of the MR damper, followed by the development of a control model informed by the experimental results. A four-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) dynamic model of the MR semi-active vehicle suspension, incorporating the double-ended MR damper, is established for both the front and rear wheels. Numerical simulations are performed to assess the impact of vehicle speed and MR damper excitation current on the suspension system's output response. The results show that variations in vehicle speed and MR damper excitation current significantly affect the suspension's output characteristics. Additionally, the suspension's output characteristics vary consistently with changes in vehicle speed and MR damper excitation current, indicating excellent controllability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Multilayer ceramic capacitor as a vital core-component for various applications is always in the spotlight. Next-generation electrical and electronic systems elaborate further requirements of multilayer ceramic capacitors in terms of higher energy storage capabilities, better stabilities, environmental-friendly lead-free, etc., where these major obstacles may restrict each other. An effective strategy for energy storage performance global optimization is put up here by constructing local polymorphic polarization configuration integrated with prototype device manufacturing. A large energy density of 20.0 J·cm−3 along with a high efficiency of 86.5%, and remarkable high-temperature stability, are achieved in lead-free multilayer ceramic capacitors. The strategy provides a feasible routine from nano, micro to macro regions in manipulating local polarizations, domain-switching barriers and breakdown strength, illustrating its great potential to be generally applicable in the design of high-performance energy storage multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is an aggressive liver malignancy with limited treatment options and a dismal prognosis. The tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) is crucial for iCCA progression, yet its comprehensive characterization remains incomplete. This study utilized mass cytometry by time of flight (CyTOF) to comprehensively analyze immune cell populations in fresh iCCA tumor samples and adjacent peritumor liver tissues. Notably, NK cell percentages significantly decreased in iCCA lesions compared to peritumor liver tissues. Conversely, an enrichment of immunosuppressive CD39+Foxp3+CD4+ regulatory T cells (CD39+T-regs) and exhausted-like CD8+ T cells (with pronounced CD39 and PD-1 expression) within TIME was identified and confirmed by multiplex immunofluorescence staining in an independent patient cohort (n = 140). Crucially, tumor-infiltrating CD39+T-regs and CD39+PD-1+CD8+ T cells emerged as independent prognostic indicators associated with an unfavorable prognosis in iCCA. These findings unveil the intricate immune landscape within iCCA, offering valuable insights for disease management and novel cancer immunotherapies.

Quantification of resistance to borer pest damage in sugarcane varieties is key to sustainable crop protection and integrate pest management. Here, were assessed resistance to damage caused by two species of borer in seedlings of 12 new sugarcane varieties. The results showed that there were differences in resistance among the varieties, where varieties YT60, GT31, GT29, LC05-136, and YT55 were classified as showing moderate resistance, YZ06-407, YZ05-51, ROC22, YZ05-49, YZ03-194, and FN38 were found to be susceptible, and FN39 and DZ03-83 were shown to be highly susceptible. This study established a method to assess sugarcane seedling resistance to borer species that could be used in future resistance evaluations of novel sugarcane varieties during the crop breeding process. The sugarcane borer is a type of pest that severely damages sugarcane. To explore and seek effective and environmentally friendly control technology for sugarcane borers, promote environmentally friendly control for sugarcane pests, new sex pheromone trap of sugarcane borers, Abamectin•Bacillus thuringiensis and Tebufenozide were selected and applied for control of Sesamia inferens Walker and Argyroploce schistaceana (Snellen). The results showed that new sex pheromone trap of sugarcane borers in combination with Abamectin•Bacillus thuringiensis or Tebufenozide were the optimum mode for environmentally friendly control techniques of Sesamia inferens Walker and Argyroploce schistaceana (Snellen). The use of new sex pheromone traps of sugarcane borers (6 a/ha) + 0.05% Abamectin•10 billion active gemma/g Bacillus thuringiensis WP (1800 g/ha) or new sex pheromone traps of sugarcane borers (6 a/ha) + 200g/L Tebufenozide SC (1500 mL/ha) were the best. The control effect of dead heart rate and bored stem rate could be more than 69.98% and 49.09%, respectively, and were superior to the control pesticide 3.6% Bisultap GR (90 kg/ha). A conductive polymer-supported electrocatalyst in the form of fibrous mat has been developed that can be employed as a polymer-based electrode for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) with promoting effects to the state-of-the art Pd based catalysts. A series of conductive polyaniline (PANI)-containing polymer fibres-supported Pd electrocatalytic electrodes were successfully prepared and tested for the ethanol electro-oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline medium. The polymer support was a robust fibrous mat, where the fibres possessed a core-shell configuration. The core part was produced via electrospinning using a mixture of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIm]Cl ionic liquid (IL). The shell was a PANI layer deposited via the chemical polymerisation of aniline monomer. Pd was then electrodeposited on the fibres and the catalysts were tested for the EOR via cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a half-cell configuration and in a temperature range between 25 and 60 °C. The activity of the catalysts tested was measured in terms of activation energy and forward peak current density in the CV and compared to that of glassy carbon (GC)-supported Pd/PANI/PAN/IL fibrous catalysts. The polymer fibre-catalyst samples showed a higher active surface area and significantly lower activation energy than the GC-based ones. Even though the GC-supported catalysts showed a higher activity in terms of current, the Pd/(PAN/IL)-core/PANI-shell fibrous mats were active as well and, in some cases, demonstrated a promoting effect of PANI on Pd for EOR and a much better stability and robustness compared to the former. Furthermore, a series of promoting metals were investigated for these mats, such as Ag, Bi and Cu, with Ag and Bi demonstrating promoting effects compared to monometallic Pd/(PAN/IL)-core/PANI-shell mats in terms of both activation energy and peak current density. This work demonstrates a promising strategy in the arena of development of polymeric mats as anode electrodes for DEFCs, exploiting the benefits of PANI in terms of ease of synthesis, catalyst poisoning prevention, cost and promoting effects.

This paper summarizes the natural enemies of major sugarcane pests and their roles in natural control in sugarcane growing regions in Yunnan. In general, these natural enemies can be divided into two groups: parasites and predators. The dominant species include Apanteles flavipes (Cameron), Sturmiopsis inferens Townsend and Trichogramma sp., which parasitize the sugarcane borer; Synonycha grandis (Thunberg), Lemnia biplagiata (Swartz), Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius) and Thiallela sp., which prey on Ceratovacuna lanigera Zehntner; and Euborellia pallipes Shiraki, Orius (Heterorius) minutus (Linnaeus) and Scymnus (Neopullus) hoffmanni Weise which preys on Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cocherell), Baliothrips serratus Kobus and Trochorhopalus humeralis Chevrolat. Protecting these natural enemies will encourage natural control of pest species while protecting the environment and maintaining ecological balance. AIM: To assess changed spontaneous brain activity in hyperthyroid exophthalmos (HE) patients by the amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method, and to analyze the correlation between brain activity and ALFF values in these patients. METHODS: Totally 18 HE and 18 hyperthyroid non-exophthalmos (HNE) patients were enrolled. The participants were tested by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to classify the ALFF values of the study population. Pearson's correlation analysis was utilized to evaluate the relationship between the ALFF values obtained from different brain areas and clinical manifestations. RESULTS: Contrary to HNE patients, we observed lower ALFF values in the left calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex (LCFSC) in HE patients. In the ROC curve analysis of the LCFSC, the area under the curve reflected a high degree of accuracy. In addition, there was positive correlation between mean ALFF values of the LCFSC and the best-corrected visual acuity of the affected eyes. CONCLUSION: The study displays abnormal brain activity in LCFSC in patients with HE, which might suggest pathological mechanism of visual impairment of HE patients.

The spontaneous changes in brain activity in patients with diabetic optic neuropathy using steady-state fMRI. The fractional amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation method was applied to evaluate neural activity changes. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess the anxiety and depression status of participants. The independent sample t-test and chi-squared test were applied to analyze the demographics of diabetic optic neuropathy patients and healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic curves were applied to analyze the variation in mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values between diabetic optic neuropathy patients and healthy controls. Pearson’s correlation analysis analyzed the relationships between the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values of brain regions and clinical behaviors in the diabetic optic neuropathy group. The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation value of diabetic optic neuropathy patients was significantly higher than healthy controls in the right precentral gyrus. However, the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values in the right anterior cingulate gyrus and left middle cingulate gyrus were markedly decreased in diabetic optic neuropathy patients. The area under the curve of receiver operating characteristics for each brain region showed high accuracy. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values of the right anterior cingulate gyrus and left middle cingulate gyrus was negatively correlated with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale scores. The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values of the left middle cingulate gyrus was negatively correlated with diabetic optic neuropathy disease duration. In conclusion, we found abnormal spontaneous brain activities in regions related to cognitive and emotional dysfunction, eye movement disorder, and vision loss in patients with diabetic optic neuropathy. These results may indicate the underlying neuropathological mechanisms of diabetic optic neuropathy and show that fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation may be an effective method to distinguish patients with diabetic optic neuropathy from healthy individuals.

Loss of cane and sugar yield caused by the combined occurrence of Tetramoera schistaceana (Snellen) and Chilo sacchariphagus (Bojer) were measured in pesticide-treated and untreated areas during 2014-2016. The results indicated that the in untreated areas, percent dead-heart was 8.30% - 58.83%, the percent stalk injured was 26.73% - 96.67%, the percent internodes bored was 4.40% - 25.87%, and the effective stem number was reduced by 4440-21900 stalk/ha. Measured yield and sugar yield loss results showed cane yield was reduced by 5.32-44.53 T/ha; the yield loss percent was5.92% - 44.53%; the sugarcane juice yield decreased by 1.73% - 3.28%; the sucrose content reduced by 0.33% - 5.63%; sugarcane brix dropped by 0.70-6.36 BX; the fibre and reducing sugar increased by 0.22% - 0.98% and 0.11%-1.58%, respectively. It was confirmed that in majority of sugarcane fields in Yunnan, China, T. schistaceana and C. sacchariphagus cause severe reduction of sugarcane and sugar yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair is an important mechanism underlying chemotherapy resistance in human cancers. Dicer participates in DSB repair by facilitating homologous recombination. However, whether Dicer is involved in nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) remains unknown. Here, we addressed whether Dicer regulates NHEJ and chemosensitivity in colon cancer cells. Using our recently developed NHEJ assay, we found that DSB introduction by I-SceI cleavage leads to Dicer upregulation. Dicer knockdown increased SIRT7 binding and decreased the level of H3K18Ac (acetylated lysine 18 of histone H3) at DSB sites, thereby repressing the recruitment of NHEJ factors to DSB sites and inhibiting NHEJ. Dicer overexpression reduced SIRT7 binding and increased the level of H3K18Ac at DSB sites, promoting the recruitment of NHEJ factors to DSBs and moderately enhancing NHEJ. Dicer knockdown and overexpression increased and decreased, respectively, the chemosensitivity of colon cancer cells. Dicer protein expression in colon cancer tissues of patients was directly correlated with chemoresistance. Abstract Lung cancer is prone to metastasis to various organs. Although intraocular metastasis (IOM) occurs at a later stage than metastasis to other organs, it often adversely affects the quality of life and suggests a poor prognosis. In this study, we selected 1608 patients with lung cancer who had metastasis to at least one site and explored clinical differences between those with IOM and non‐IOM (NIOM). An independent t test and chi‐squared test were used to analyze the clinical features of the patients. The statistically significant parameters were analyzed by binary logistic regression to determine the risk factors for IOM. A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to assess their diagnostic value in IOM. The results showed that no significant differences were noted in age, gender, and pathological type between the IOM and NIOM groups. However, the IOM group had higher levels of alpha‐fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, cancer antigen (CA)‐125, CA‐153, cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA 21‐1), and total prostate‐specific antigen, compared with the NIOM group. Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns have been widely used in onshore constructions. To extend its applications to coastal/offshore structures and meanwhile relieve the overexploitation on freshwater and river sand, an FRP-confined seawater sea-sand concrete-filled stainless steel tube (F-SSCFSST) column is proposed. The cyclic axial compressive behavior of this newly proposed column was investigated in this study. A total of 22 specimens (including nine pairs of specimens for cyclic compression and four individual specimens for monotonic compression) were tested. Most importantly, the influences of three loading patterns (i.e., single full unloading/reloading, repeated full unloading/reloading, and mixed of repeated full and partial unloading/reloading) were studied. The results showed that although all F-SSCFSST specimens failed from FRP rupture in the mid-height area, the FRP rupture was less fierce for specimens with repeated internal unloading/reloading cycles. Similar to the FRP-confined concrete, the envelope curve of cyclic axial load–strain response matched closely with the monotonic compression curve for a particular specimen. However, the unloading curve was less curly compared with that of a typical FRP-confined concrete. The confinement effect provided by the FRP jacket was much stronger than that by the stainless steel tube. Although Lam and Teng’s model, which is proposed for the FRP-confined concrete, could provide satisfactory estimations for strain recovery ratios and stress deterioration ratios, it underestimated the envelope plastic strains by 20%.

Three-body B decays not only significantly broaden the study of B meson decay mechanisms but also provide information of resonant particles. Because of complicate dynamics, it is very hard for us to study the whole phase space in a specific approach. In this review, we take B⟶KR⟶K+K− decays as examples and show the application of the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach in studying the quasi-two-body B decays, where two particles move collinearly with large energy and the bachelor one recoils back. To describe the dynamics of two collinear particles, the S, P, and D-wave functions of kaon-pair with different waves are introduced. By keeping the transverse momenta, all possible diagrams including the hard spectator diagrams and annihilation ones can be calculated in PQCD approach. Most results are well consistent with the current measurements from BaBar, Belle, and LHCb experiments. Moreover, under the narrow-width approximation, we can extract the branching fractions of the two-body decays involving the resonant states and also predict the branching fractions of the corresponding quasi-two-body decays B⟶KR⟶π+π−. All predictions are expected to be tested in the ongoing LHCb and Belle-II experiments.

The poliovirus receptor (PVR) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (Ig SF) and is essential for the promotion of cancer cell proliferation and invasion. However, the correlation between PVR expression and prognosis as well as immune infiltration in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. The expression level of PVR was quantified using the Tumor and Tumor Immunity Evaluation Resource (TIMER) and Sangerbox. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to validate the PVR expression. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the feasibility of using PVR as a differentiating factor according to the area under curve (AUC) score. A PVR binding protein network was built using the STRING tool. An enrichment analysis using the R package clusterProfiler was used to explore the potential function of PVR. Immune infiltration analysis was calculated with ESTIMATE algorithms. We also assessed the correlation between PVR expression and immune infiltration by the single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) method from the R package GSVA and TIMER database. The results showed that PVR was commonly overexpressed in multiple types of tumors including HCC. The data of GSE64041 confirmed the same result. The ROC curve suggested that PVR could be a potential diagnostic biomarker. Additionally, high mRNA expression of PVR in HCC was significantly correlated with poor overall survival (OS) and relapse free survival (RFS). Results also indicated correlations between PVR mRNA expression with the level of infiltration immune cells including B cells, CD8+ T cells, cytotoxic cells, DCs, CD56dim NK cells, pDCs, and Th2 cells. Furthermore, the PVR level was significantly correlated with immune markers for immunosuppressive cells in HCC. In conclusion, PVR might be an important regulator of tumor immune cell infiltration and a valuable prognostic biomarker in HCC. However, additional work is needed to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression level of collapsin response mediator protein 4 (CRMP-4) in human colorectal cancer (CRC) tissue and to evauluate its impact on SW480 cell proliferation, in addition to tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model. Clinical CRC tissue samples were collected to detect the CRMP-4 protein expression levels using western blot and immunohistochemistry analyses. A specific small interfering RNA sequence targeting the CRMP-4 gene (DPYSL3) was constructed and transfected into an SW480 cell line using a lentivirus vector to obtain a stable cell line with low expression of CRMP-4. The effectiveness of the interference was evaluated using western blot and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the cell proliferation was determined using MTT and BrdU colorimetric methods. Tumor growth was assessed by subcutaneously inoculating the constructed cells into BALB/c nude mice. The protein expression levels of CRMP-4 were markedly increased in colon tumor tissue of the human samples. The proliferation of SW480 cells and the tumor growth rate in nude mice of the si-CPMR-4 group were evidently depressed compared with the si-scramble group. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to an increased risk of fractures. It is the most common metabolic bone disorder worldwide, affecting one in three women and one in eight men over the age of 50. In the past 15 years, a large number of genes have been reported as being associated with osteoporosis. However, only in the past 4 years we have witnessed an accelerated pace in identifying and validating osteoporosis susceptibility loci. This increase in pace is mostly due to large-scale association studies, meta-analyses, and genome-wide association studies of both single nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variations. A comprehensive review of these developments revealed that, to date, at least 15 genes ( VDR, ESR1, ESR2, LRP5, LRP4, SOST, GRP177, OPG, RANK, RANKL, COLIA1, SPP1, ITGA1, SP7, and SOX6) can be reasonably assigned as confirmed osteoporosis susceptibility genes, whereas, another >30 genes are promising candidate genes. Notably, confirmed and promising genes are clustered in three biological pathways, the estrogen endocrine pathway, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and the RANKL/RANK/OPG pathway. New biological pathways will certainly emerge when more osteoporosis genes are identified and validated. A mutant isolated from a screen of EMS-mutagenized Arabidopsis lines, per1, showed normal root hair development under control conditions but displayed an inhibited root hair elongation phenotype upon Pi deficiency. Additionally, the per1 mutant exhibited a pleiotropic phenotype under control conditions, resembling Pi-deficient plants in several aspects. Inhibition of root hair elongation upon growth on low Pi media was reverted by treatment with the Pi analog phosphite, suggesting that the mutant phenotype is not caused by a lack of Pi. Reciprocal grafting experiments revealed that the mutant rootstock is sufficient to cause the phenotype. Complementation analyses showed that the PER1 gene encodes an ubiquitin-specific protease, UBP14. The mutation caused a synonymous substitution in the 12th exon of this gene, resulting in a lower abundance of the UBP14 protein, probably as a consequence of reduced translation efficiency. Transcriptional profiling of per1 and wild-type plants subjected to short-term Pi starvation revealed genes that may be important for the signaling of Pi deficiency.
