15. Upcycling plastic wastes into high-performance nano-MOFs by efficient neutral hydrolysis for water adsorption and photocatalysis.

Abstract

Utilizing plastic wastes as linker sources for metal–organic framework (MOF) synthesis is a green and sustainable methodology for the chemical upcycling of plastics. However, improving the depolymerization efficiency of polymers and avoiding highly corrosive solvents during the purification of the products remain significant challenges. Herein, we propose an approach to efficiently hydrolyze practical poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) wastes using aqueous dispersions of ultrasmall ZnO (6 nm) nanoparticles as the catalysts and subsequently synthesize five typical nano-MOFs by one-pot and two-pot strategies. The neutral hydrolysis of PET is greatly accelerated, with PET being completely depolymerized at 200 °C in 60 min with a terephthalic acid yield of 95.6%. The PET-derived MOF nanoparticles present high BET surface areas that are higher than or close to those of congeneric MOFs synthesized from petroleum-based and highly purified ligands. As a water absorbent, the two-pot MIL-101(Cr) exhibits high thermal stability with a water uptake capacity of 1327.3 mg g−1. For photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic pollutants, MIL-53(Al, Fe) samples derived from PET textiles show a high tetracycline removal efficiency of over 90% within 60 min without additives in an aqueous system, outperforming most of the conventionally prepared MOF catalysts. Abstract

The colloidosome, as a kind of Pickering microcapsule, offers a highly functionalizable approach for encapsulation, but current studies mainly focus on shells that lack real‐time modulated permeability. Herein, a scalable spray drying method was employed to fabricate temperature/near‐infrared (NIR)/magnetic multi‐stimuli responsive colloidosomes with adjustable permeability, facilitating intelligent transmembrane transport of molecules. The colloidosomes assembled with SiO2/polydopamine/poly (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) nanoparticles can be heated from 25°C to 50°C within 5 min upon NIR exposure. The permeability of shells regulated by temperature and NIR allows for real‐time remote control. Yeast cells, as an example, are encapsulated within colloidosomes. The decomposition rate of H2O2 varies with temperature (25–45°C) and NIR intensity (0.5–1 W cm−2), which can attain a more than sixfold increase in the rate constant of pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model. Furthermore, the strategy was expanded by encapsulating doxorubicin/UiO‐66 particles, highlighting its great potential in realms of multi‐stimuli responsive colloidosomes applications. 27. Green, efficient and controllable synthesis of high-quality MOF-74 with high gravity technology.

Abstract

MOF-74 or M2(dhtp) (M = metal ions, dhtp = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid), as a typical class of metal–organic frameworks (MOF), have garnered considerable interest due to their abundant unsaturated metal sites. However, environmental and economic limitations caused by the extensive use of organic solvents in traditional syntheses hinder their industrial applications. Although water as a green solvent is considered to be the best candidate solvent, water-based MOFs often have poor crystallinity and long synthesis time, and controlling the particle size is difficult. Herein, a water-based strategy is proposed to synthesize high-quality MOF-74–Co with controllable particle sizes in a rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor using high-gravity technology. MOF-74–Co could be rapidly prepared in the RPB, and shows a smaller and more uniform particle size, higher crystallinity, and larger specific surface area, as compared to the counterpart prepared in a traditional stirred tank reactor. Further adopting acetic acid as a modulator, the as-prepared MOF-74–Co has the highest BET surface area (1599 m2 g−1) in the reported literature so far and simultaneously possesses a high space–time yield (293 kg m−3 day−1). High-quality MOF-74–Zn and MOF-74–Ni can also be prepared, proving the generality of this strategy. Furthermore, the small-sized MOF-74–Co-78 nm exhibits a faster adsorption rate and a larger saturation adsorption capacity (298 mg g−1) for CO2 compared with large-sized samples.
