11. Vocal signals facilitate cooperative hunting in wild chimpanzees

Abstract

Cooperation and communication likely coevolved in humans. However, the evolutionary roots of this interdependence remain unclear. We address this issue by investigating the role of vocal signals in facilitating a group cooperative behavior in an ape species: hunting in wild chimpanzees. First, we show that bark vocalizations produced before hunt initiation are reliable signals of behavioral motivation, with barkers being most likely to participate in the hunt. Next, we find that barks are associated with greater hunter recruitment and more effective hunting, with shorter latencies to hunting initiation and prey capture. Our results indicate that the coevolutionary relationship between vocal communication and group-level cooperation is not unique to humans in the ape lineage and is likely to have been present in our last common ancestor with chimpanzees.\ud

19. Transition from laparoscopic to robotic liver surgery: clinical outcomes, learning curve effect, and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract

The reproducibility of the implementation of robotic liver surgery (RLS) is still debated. The aim of the present study is to evaluate short-term outcomes and cost differences during the implementation of RLS, performed by an early adopter in laparoscopic liver surgery (LLS). Patients undergoing RLS between February 2020 and May 2021 were included. Short-term outcomes of the robotic group (RG) were compared to the "Initial Phase" group (IP) of 120 LLS cases and the 120 most recent laparoscopic cases or "Mastery Phase" group (MP). A cost analysis per procedure for the three groups was performed. Seventy-one patients underwent RLS during the study period. Median operative time in the RG was comparable to the IP, but significantly shorter in the MP (140 vs 138 vs 120 min, p < 0.001). Median intraoperative blood loss in the RG was lower than in both laparoscopic groups (40 ml [20–90 ml] vs 150 ml [50–250 ml] vs 80 ml [30–150 ml], p < 0.001). Median hospital stay in the RG was significantly shorter than the IP group (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in postoperative complication, conversion, or readmission rates. Procedural cost analysis was in favor of robotic surgery (€5008) compared to the IP (€ 6913) and the MP (€6099). Surgeons with sufficient experience in LLS can rapidly overcome the learning curve for RLS. In our experience, the short-term outcomes of the implementation phase of RLS are similar to the mastery phase of LLS. The total average cost per procedure is lower for RLS compared to LLS. Abstract

Studies indicate that the energy performance gap between real and calculated energy use can be explained for 80% by occupant behaviour. This human factor may be composed of routine and thermoregulatory behaviour. When occupants do not feel comfortable due to high or low operative temperatures and resulting high or low skin temperatures, they are likely to exhibit thermoregulatory behaviour. The aim of this study is to monitor and understand this thermoregulatory behaviour of the occupant. This is a detailed study of two females living in a rowhouse in the city of Heerlen (Netherlands). During a monitoring period of three weeks over a time span of three months the following parameters were monitored: activity level, clothing, micro climate, skin temperatures and thermal comfort and sensation. Their micro climate was measured at five positions on the body to assess exposed near body conditions and skin temperature. Every two hours they filled in a questionnaire regarding their thermal comfort and sensation level (7-point scale), clothing, activities and thermoregulatory behaviour. The most comfortable (optimal) temperature was calculated for each person by adopting a biophysical model, a thermoneutral zone model. This study shows unique indivual comfort patterns in relation to ambient conditions. An example is given how this information can be used to calculate the buildings energy comsumption.

The article discusses what information animals derive from eavesdropping on interactions between conspecifics, and assign value to has difficult to assess because overt behavioral reactions have often lacking. Topics include marmosets eavesdrop on and socially evaluate vocal exchanges and using information to distinguish between cooperative and noncooperative conspecifics; and the physiological reactions show that playbacks have perceived holistically as the sum of the separate elements.

Abstract

The importance of between-group competition in the social evolution of animal societies is controversial, particularly with respect to understanding the origins and maintenance of cooperation in our own species. Among primates, aggressive between-group encounters are often rare or strikingly absent, a phenomenon that in some species has been ascribed to the presence of collective action problems. Here, we report on a series of comparative tests that show that the intensity of between-group contest competition is indeed lower in species that experience a collective action problem while controlling for predictions from an "ideal gas” model of animal encounters and general species' ecology. Species that do not succumb to the collective action problem are either cooperative breeders, are characterized by philopatry of the dominant sex, or live in relatively small groups with few individuals of this dominant sex. This implies that collective action problems are averted either through shared genes and benefits or a by-product mutualism in which the territorial behavior of some privileged individuals is not affected by the behavior of others. We conclude that across the primate taxon, the intensity of between-group competition is predominantly constrained by a social dilemma among group members, rather than ecological conditions, and that the collective action problem is thus an important selective pressure in the evolution of primate (including human) cooperation and sociality
