Background: Instructors often use a point-based system for grading students (e.g., 100 or 1000 total points). This system can impact student outcomes. Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the implications of different point value courses for student emotions, perceptions of courses, and classroom performance. Method: The lab-based study used an experimental design to gather student responses to a hypothetical course with one of three potential total point values (100, 1,000, or 100,000 points). The classroom-based study examined student responses to different point values in 12 actual courses in which students were enrolled (with either 100 or 1000 total points). Results: In the lab-based study, courses with greater total point values (i.e., 1000 and 100,000) had greater emotional impact than a course with 100 total points. Participants in these conditions also preferred a course that featured a pass/fail scheme. In the classroom-based study, students in the 100-point condition (vs. 1000-point condition) missed more assignments, and as a consequence, performed more poorly in their course. Conclusion: Higher total point values in courses may have a more significant impact on students' emotions, and as a consequence, they may miss less work, and perform better in the course overall.

There is a dearth of literature on how research agendas have been developed. In this article, the authors reflect on the process of developing a research agenda through a case study of a rural health university centre. The aim is to contribute to understanding how a team can effectively plan research. Two leaders of the process, as well as academics external to the process, reflected on the experience and the outcome of the agenda development process. Reflections focused on three areas: (a) engagement levels, (b) power and influence, and (c) interpretation of the research agenda. First, while there was passionate discussion at meetings and afterward, engagement levels varied. Second, the process was imbued with power and influence at multiple levels. Finally, the availability of a conceptual framework to contextualise rural and remote health research helped in interpreting the significance of the resulting research agenda. The article concludes with contrasting thoughts on the place of research agendas within contemporary neoliberal regimes of research management.

A key issue for the design of online marketplaces is addressing leakage. Buyers may use the marketplace to discover a seller or to obtain certain conveniences, but the seller may then want to take transactions off the marketplace to avoid transaction fees. Assuming buyers are heterogenous in their switching cost or inconvenience cost of purchasing directly, we provide a model in which there is partial leakage in equilibrium. We use the model to analyze the trade-offs associated with different strategies the marketplace can use to attenuate the effects of leakage: investing in transaction benefits, limiting communication, charging referral fees, using price-parity clauses, introducing seller competition on the marketplace, and hiding sellers that try to induce too much leakage. Introduction Members of dual-smoker couples (in which both partners smoke) are unlikely to try to quit smoking and are likely to relapse if they do make an attempt. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility, tolerability, and preliminary outcomes of dyadic adaptations of financial incentive treatments (FITs) to promote smoking cessation in dual-smoker couples. Aims and Methods We enrolled 95 dual-smoker couples (N = 190) in a three-arm feasibility RCT comparing two partner-involved FITs (single vs. dual incentives) against a no-treatment control condition. Participants in all conditions were offered nicotine replacement and psychoeducation. A 3-month follow-up provided information about retention, tolerability (ie, self-reported benefits and costs of the study), and preliminary efficacy (ie, program completion, quit attempts, point-prevalent abstinence, and joint quitting). Results Results suggest dyadic adaptations were feasible to implement (89% retention rate) and highly tolerable for participants (p <.001). Neither feasibility nor tolerability varied across the treatment arm. Preliminary efficacy outcomes indicated partner-involved FITs have promise for increasing smoking cessation in dual-smoker couples (OR = 2.36–13.06). Conclusions Dyadic implementations of FITs are feasible to implement and tolerable to participants. Implications The evidence that dyadic adaptations of FITs were feasible and tolerable, and the positive preliminary efficacy outcomes suggest that adequately powered RCTs formally evaluating the efficacy of dyadic adaptations of FITs for dual-smoker couples are warranted. We model dynamic competition between firms which improve their products through learning from customer data, either by pooling different customers' data (across‐user learning) or by learning from repeated usage of the same customers (within‐user learning). We show how a firm's competitive advantage is affected by the shape of firms' learning functions, asymmetries between their learning functions, the extent of data accumulation, and customer beliefs. We also explore how public policies toward data sharing, user privacy, and killer data acquisitions affect competitive dynamics and efficiency. Food is a powerful motivator in human functioning--it serves a biological need, as emotional support, and as a cultural symbol. Until recently, the term "comfort food" has been inadequately and unscientifically defined. In addition, the popular media have oversimplified the concept of comfort food as purely unhealthy food, often consumed in moments of stress or sadness. Recent empirical research, detailed within this article, seeks to correct these misrepresentations by describing how comfort food serves as a social surrogate and as a cognitive/emotional representation of others. We discuss these findings with potential course-specific content examples. We also discuss broader teaching implications, highlighting the applicability of comfort food research to virtually every area psychology.

Featured Application: Creation of statistically significant reference sample sets for validation, optimization, and demonstration of non-destructive testing techniques, particularly for the additive manufacturing sector. Techniques for the controlled seeding and growth of cracks are urgently required for non-destructive testing technique evaluation, particularly for additive manufactured (AM) samples. This paper describes a method that uses a combination of the tensile load and the resonance excitation of notched AM samples, with in situ monitoring of the resonance frequency serving to track the crack dimensions. Mechanical low-cycle fatigue cracks, ranging in length from ~0.3 mm to ~5 mm, were successfully created in five AM samples using this technique. The samples were non-destructively characterized using optical microscopy and Nonlinear Resonance (NLR) testing. The exploitation of resonance enabled the concentration of a significant number of stress cycles on the samples in much shorter timespans than conventional fatigue testing, enabling a high throughput while utilizing compact components. Furthermore, the tracking of the resonance frequency shift throughout the process enabled non-invasive and no-contact real-time condition monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Australia has a doctor shortage in rural settings, and rural placements for medical students have an important role in increasing the likelihood of students staying in rural settings throughout their careers. However, to date there is limited research regarding medical student perceptions of rural placement quality. Objective: We aimed to determine factors that impact the overall medical student experience during rural placements. Design: Cross‐sectional survey. Setting: Rural/remote clinical schools across Australia. Participants: Medical students on rural/remote clinical placements for at least 6 months. Main outcome measures: To assess factors impacting student experience on rural placements, we conducted a cross‐sectional survey, known as the Australian Rural Clinical School Support Survey (ARCSSS) which was completed online by medical students across Australia. Demographic data were collected in addition to responses regarding academic teaching, extracurricular activities, and support services. Multiple choice and Likert scale questions were utilised. Results: A total of 107 responses to our survey were analysed. The majority of participants were female (66.4%), and in their middle years of clinical education (55.1%). Overall, respondents showed high levels of satisfaction with clinical school supervisors, and clinical education. A high proportion of respondents indicated minimal accessibility of health and other support services. While a large proportion of participants indicated satisfaction with the rural placements, it was demonstrated that students were generally dissatisfied with school wellness activities and extracurricular activities. Financial insecurity was noted. Conclusion: The findings from our survey indicate there are numerous areas in which rural placements have been effective for medical students, and others in which improvement is needed. Platforms use price parity clauses to prevent sellers setting lower prices when selling through other channels. They claim these restraints are needed so platforms have incentives to invest in providing search services—without them, consumers would search on the platform but then switch to buy in a cheaper channel. In a model incorporating these effects, we find that wide price parity clauses lead to excessive platform investment while narrow (or no) price parity clauses lead to insufficient platform investment.
