We present a detailed X-ray investigation of a region (S1) exhibiting nonthermal X-ray emission within the supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 37B hosting the magnetar CXOU J171405.7−381031. Previous analyses modeled this emission with a power law (PL), inferring various values for the photon index (Γ) and absorbing column density (N H). Based on these, S1 was suggested to be an SNR shell, a background pulsar wind nebula, or an interaction region between the SNR and a molecular cloud. Our analysis of a larger data set favors a steepening (broken or curved PL) spectrum over a straight PL, with the best-fit broken power-law (BPL) parameters of Γ = 1.23 ± 0.23 and 2.24 ± 0.16 below and above a break at 5.57 ± 0.52 keV, respectively. However, a simple PL or srcut model cannot be definitively ruled out. For the BPL model, the inferred N H = (4.08 ± 0.72) × 1022 cm−2 towards S1 is consistent with that of the SNR, suggesting a physical association. The BPL-inferred spectral break ΔΓ ≈ 1 and hard Γ can be naturally explained by a nonthermal bremsstrahlung (NTB) model. We present an evolutionary NTB model that reproduces the observed spectrum, which indicates the presence of subrelativistic electrons within S1. However, alternate explanations for S1, an unrelated PWN or the SNR shock with unusually efficient acceleration, cannot be ruled out. We discuss these explanations and their implications for gamma-ray emission from CTB 37B and describe future observations that could settle the origin of S1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) reveal relativistic reflections from the innermost regions of accretion disks, which contain general-relativistic footprints caused by spinning supermassive black holes (SMBH). We anticipate the spin of a SMBH to be stable over the human timeframe, so brightness changes in the high-energy corona above the SMBH should slightly alter relativistic reflection. In this brief review, we discuss the latest developments in modeling relativistic reflection, as well as the rapid small variation in relativistic emission disclosed by the principal component analysis (PCA) of X-ray variability in AGN. PCA studies of X-ray spectra from AGNs have shown that relativistically blurred reflection has negligible fluctuations over the course of observations, which could originate from rapid (intrahour) intrinsic variations in near-horizon accretion flows and photon rings. The PCA technique is an effective way to disclose relativistic reflection from X-ray observations of AGNs, simplifying the complexity of largely variable X-ray data for automated spectral analysis with machine learning algorithms. The Fermi and eROSITA bubbles (FBs and eRBs), large diffuse structures in our Galaxy, can be the by-products of steady star formation activity. To simultaneously explain the star formation history of the Milky Way (MW) and the metallicity of ∼ Z ⊙ at the Galactic disk, a steady Galactic wind driven by cosmic rays (CRs) is required. For tenuous gases with a density of ≲10−3 cm−3, CR heating dominates over radiative cooling, and the gas can maintain the virial temperature of ∼0.3 keV, ideal for escape from the Galactic system as the wind. A part of the wind falls back onto the disk like a Galactic fountain flow. We model the wind dynamics according to the Galactic evolution scenario and find that the scale height and surface brightness of the X-ray and the hadronic gamma-ray emissions from such fountain flow region can be consistent with the observed properties of the FBs and eRBs. This implies that the bubbles are persistent structures of the MW existing over (at least) the last ∼1 Gyr rather than evanescent structures formed by nontrivial, ∼10 Myr past Galactic center transient activities. 4U 1538-522 is a persistent high-mass X-ray binary that exhibits secular spin evolution. In 2019, it underwent a torque reversal from spinning up to spinning down. We performed an extensive study using four NuSTAR observations to compare temporal and spectral properties during different states. We observed no abrupt change in luminosity associated with the torque reversal. In addition, the pulse profile, the spectral shape, and the power spectrum remained unchanged before and after the torque reversal. The orbital and superorbital modulation profiles also showed no significant changes. We discuss possible mechanisms for the torque reversal and conclude that it is unlikely to be caused by interactions between the accretion disk and the magnetosphere. Pulsar halos (also termed "TeV halos") are a new class of γ -ray sources in the Galaxy, which manifest as extended γ -ray emission around middle-aged pulsars, as discovered around the Geminga pulsar, the Monogem pulsar, and PSR J0622+3749 by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory and the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory. A consensus has been reached that the teraelectronvolt emission comes from the inverse Compton scattering of escaping electrons/positrons from the pulsar wind nebula of the soft background radiation field, while the particle transport mechanism in the halo is still in dispute. Currently, there are mainly three interpretations: the isotropic, suppressed diffusion model; the isotropic, unsuppressed diffusion model that considers the ballistic propagation of newly injected particles; and the anisotropic diffusion model. While the predicted γ -ray surface brightness profiles of all three models can be more or less consistent with the observations, the implications of the three models for cosmic-ray transport mechanisms and the properties of the interstellar magnetic field are quite different. In this study, we calculate the anticipated X-ray emission of pulsar halos under the three models. We show that the synchrotron radiation of these escaping electrons/positrons can produce a corresponding X-ray halo around the pulsar and that the expected surface brightness profiles are distinct in the three models. We suggest that sensitive X-ray detectors of a large field of view (such as eROSITA and the Einstein Probe) with a reasonably long exposure time are crucial to understanding the formation mechanism of pulsar halos and can serve as a probe of the properties of interstellar turbulence. The influence of electromagnetic radiation on nuclear processes is applied to an example of a neutrinoless double electron capture (0ν2ec). For cases with X-ray free-electron lasers (X-ray FELs) and/or inverse Compton X-ray sources, it was shown that such a decay can be significantly enhanced by tuning the system to the resonant conditions through the absorption and/or emission of a photon with the decay resonance defect energy Δ. In this case, the 0v2ec decay rate Γ2e of nuclide Z grew linearly with field intensity (S/Sz) up to the X-ray flux power Sm~Z6, while Sz~Z6 (Γ/Δ)2 with decay width Γ of a daughter atom. For the case of 78Kr → 78Se − 0ν2eL1L1 capture we find Sz~109 W cm−2 and Sm~1017 W cm−2 which indicate a possibility of increasing decay rate to eight orders of magnitude or even larger. We investigated the multiband emission from the pulsar binaries XSS J12270−4859, PSR J2039−5617, and PSR J2339−0533, which exhibit orbital modulation in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. We constructed the sources' broadband spectral energy distributions and multiband orbital light curves by supplementing our X-ray measurements with published gamma-ray results, and we modeled the data using intrabinary shock (IBS) scenarios. While the X-ray data were well explained by synchrotron emission from electrons/positrons in the IBS, the gamma-ray data were difficult to explain with the IBS components alone. Therefore, we explored other scenarios that had been suggested for gamma-ray emission from pulsar binaries: (1) inverse-Compton emission in the upstream unshocked wind zone and (2) synchrotron radiation from electrons/positrons interacting with the kilogauss magnetic field of the companion. Scenario (1) requires that the bulk motion of the wind substantially decelerates to ∼1000 km s−1 before reaching the IBS for increased residence time, in which case the formation of a strong shock is untenable, inconsistent with the X-ray phenomenology. Scenario (2) can explain the data if we assume the presence of electrons/positrons with a Lorentz factor ∼ 108 (∼0.1 PeV) that pass through the IBS and tap a substantial portion of the pulsar voltage drop. These findings raise the possibility that the orbitally modulating gamma-ray signals from pulsar binaries can provide insights into the flow structure and energy conversion within pulsar winds and particle acceleration nearing PeV energies in pulsars. These signals may also yield greater understanding of kilogauss magnetic fields potentially hosted by the low-mass stars in these systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The black hole spin parameter, a *, was measured to be close to its maximum value of 1 in many accreting X-ray binaries. In particular, a * ≳ 0.9 was found in a number of studies of LMC X-1. These measurements were claimed to take into account both statistical and systematic uncertainties. We perform new measurements using a recent simultaneous observation by NICER and NuSTAR, providing a data set of high quality. We use the disk continuum method together with improved models for coronal Comptonization. With the standard relativistic disk model and optically thin Comptonization, we obtain values of a * similar to those obtained before. We then consider modifications to the standard model. Using a color correction of 2, we find a * ≈ 0.64–0.84. We then consider disks with dissipation in surface layers. To account for that, we assume the standard disk is covered by a warm and optically thick Comptonizing layer. Our model with the lowest χ 2 then yields a * ≈ 0.40 − 0.32 + 0.41 . In order to test the presence of such effects in other sources, we also study an X-ray observation of Cyg X-1 by Suzaku in the soft state. We confirm the previous findings of a * > 0.99 using the standard model, but then we find a weakly constrained a * ≈ 0.82 − 0.74 + 0.16 when including an optically thick Comptonizing layer. We conclude that determinations of the spin using the continuum method can be highly sensitive to the assumptions about the disk structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fukui et al. quantified the hadronic and leptonic gamma-rays in the young TeV gamma-ray shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946 (RX J1713), and demonstrated that gamma rays are a combination of hadronic and leptonic gamma-ray components with a ratio of ∼6: 4 in gamma-ray counts N g. This discovery, which adopted a new methodology of multi-linear gamma-ray decomposition, was the first quantification of the two gamma-ray components. In the present work, we applied the same methodology to another TeV gamma-ray shell-type SNR RX J0852.0-4622 (RXJ0852) in 3D space characterized by (the interstellar proton column density N p)-(the nonthermal X-ray count N x)-[ N g], and quantified the hadronic and leptonic gamma-ray components as having a ratio of ∼5:5 in N g. The present work adopted the fitting of two/three flat planes in 3D space instead of a single flat plane, which allowed suppression of the fitting errors. This quantification indicates that hadronic and leptonic gamma-rays are of the same order of magnitude in these two core-collapse SNRs, verifying the significant hadronic gamma-ray components. We argue that the target interstellar protons, in particular their spatial distribution, are essential in any attempts to identify the type of particles responsible for gamma-ray emission. The present results confirm that cosmic-ray (CR) energy ≲100 TeV is compatible with a scheme in which SNRs are the dominant source of these Galactic CRs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hard X-ray emission from magnetars and other isolated neutron stars remains under-explored. An instrument with higher sensitivity to hard X-rays is critical to understanding the physics of neutron star magnetospheres and also the relationship between magnetars and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). High sensitivity to hard X-rays is required to determine the number of magnetars with hard X-ray tails, and to track transient non-thermal emission from these sources for years post-outburst. This sensitivity would also enable previously impossible studies of the faint non-thermal emission from middle-aged rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), and detailed phase-resolved spectroscopic studies of younger, bright RPPs. The High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging (<5 arcsec half-power diameter (HPD) at 0.2-25 keV) and broad spectral coverage (0.2-80 keV) with a sensitivity superior to current facilities (including XMM-Newton and NuSTAR). HEX-P has the required timing resolution to perform follow-up observations of sources identified by other facilities and positively identify candidate pulsating neutron stars. The integral X-ray luminosities of 89 Milky Way Globular Clusters within 2 core radii re have been estimated using the average X-ray fluxes of individual sources detected in the recent Chandra, XMM-Newton or Swift missions. The X-ray luminosity function is constructed and a limit luminosity Lx ([0.5-7] keV) = 1033.65 erg s¹ is defined, which divides the sample into two groups: 18 high-luminosity clusters and 71 low-luminosity clusters. For both subsamples the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied for the parameters ellipticity, eccentricity of the orbit and estimated number of intermediate mass black holes. The test results show that at a confidence level of 99.9%, the high X-ray luminosity clusters have fewer black holes with intermediate mass than the low X-ray luminosity clusters. In addition, the former have lower ellipticity and higher eccentricity compared to the latter, but at significantly lower confidence levels of 80%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have carried out a deep survey of the M81 field in the 25–60 keV energy band based on long-term (2003–2023) INTEGRAL observations. A record sensitivity of 0.16 mCrab at a detection significance of has been achieved in the central part of the field owing to the long accumulated exposure (19.2 Ms). The total area of the survey is 1004 deg at a sensitivity level better than 0.72 mCrab. We have produced a catalog of sources detected at a significance level higher than . It contains 51 objects most of which are active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The median redshift of the Seyfert galaxies in the catalog is . Six sources have not been detected previously in any of the X-ray surveys. According to the available indirect data, all of them and two more sources that have already been entered previously into the INTEGRAL survey catalogs can also be AGNs, including those with strong internal absorption. Pulse profile modeling of X-ray data from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer is now enabling precision inference of neutron star mass and radius. Combined with nuclear physics constraints from chiral effective field theory ( χ EFT), and masses and tidal deformabilities inferred from gravitational-wave detections of binary neutron star mergers, this has led to a steady improvement in our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS). Here, we consider the impact of several new results: the radius measurement for the 1.42 M _⊙ pulsar PSR J0437−4715 presented by Choudhury et al., updates to the masses and radii of PSR J0740+6620 and PSR J0030+0451, and new χ EFT results for neutron star matter up to 1.5 times nuclear saturation density. Using two different high-density EOS extensions—a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in a neutron star (CS)—we find the radius of a 1.4 M _⊙ (2.0 M _⊙ ) neutron star to be constrained to the 95% credible ranges ${12.28}_{-0.76}^{+0.50}$ km ( ${12.33}_{-1.34}^{+0.70}$ km) for the PP model and ${12.01}_{-0.75}^{+0.56}$ km ( ${11.55}_{-1.09}^{+0.94}$ km) for the CS model. The maximum neutron star mass is predicted to be ${2.15}_{-0.16}^{+0.14}$ M _⊙ and ${2.08}_{-0.16}^{+0.28}$ M _⊙ for the PP and CS models, respectively. We explore the sensitivity of our results to different orders and different densities up to which χ EFT is used, and show how the astrophysical observations provide constraints for the pressure at intermediate densities. Moreover, we investigate the difference R _2.0 − R _1.4 of the radius of 2 M _⊙ and 1.4 M _⊙ neutron stars within our EOS inference.

We perform a detailed study of the black hole spin of Cyg X-1, using accurate broadband X-ray data obtained in the soft spectral state by simultaneous NICER and NuSTAR observations, supplemented at high energies by INTEGRAL data. We use the relativistic disk model kerrbb together with different models of the Comptonization high-energy tail and the relativistically broadened reflection features. Unlike most previous studies, we tie the spin parameters of the disk and relativistic broadening models, thus combining the continuum and reflection methods of spin determination. We also consider a likely increase of the disk color correction due to a partial support of the disk by large-scale magnetic fields. We find that such models yield a spin parameter of ${a}_{* }={0.87}_{-0.03}^{+0.04}$ if the disk inclination is allowed to be free, with $i=39{^\circ }_{-1}^{+1}$ . Assuming i = 27.°5, as determined by optical studies of the binary, worsens the fit but leads to similar values of the spin, ${a}_{* }={0.90}_{-0.01}^{+0.01}$ . In addition, we consider the presence of a warm Comptonization layer on top of the disk, motivated by successful modeling of soft X-ray excesses in other sources with such a model. This dramatically lowers the spin, to a _* ≲ 0.1, consistent with the spin measurements from black hole mergers. On the other hand, if the natal spin of Cyg X-1 was low but now a _* ≈ 0.9, a period of effective supercritical accretion had to take place in the past. Such accretion could be facilitated by photon advection, as proposed for ultraluminous X-ray sources.

Cir X-1 is a neutron star X-ray binary characterized by strong variations in flux during its eccentric ∼16.6 day orbit. There are also strong variations in the spectral state, and it has historically shown both atoll and Z state properties. We observed the source with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer during two orbital segments, 6 days apart, for a total of 263 ks. We find an X-ray polarization degree in these segments of 1.6% ± 0.3% and 1.4% ± 0.3% at polarization angles of 37° ± 5° and −12° ± 7°, respectively. Thus, we observed a rotation of the polarization angle by 49° ± 8° along the orbit. Because variations of accretion flow, and then of the hardness ratio, are expected during the orbit, we also studied the polarization binned in hardness ratio and found the polarization angle differing by 67° ± 11° between the lowest and highest values of the hardness ratio. We discuss possible interpretations of this result that could indicate a possible misalignment between the symmetry axes of the accretion disk and the Comptonizing region caused by the misalignment of the neutron star’s angular momentum with respect to the orbital one.

Transonic (with Mach number ) motion of a pulsar relative to the external medium can help its compact pulsar wind nebula develop a double-torus X-ray morphology. The double-torus structure can reverberate as a whole under the dynamic pressure of the external flow. For a flow aligned with the symmetry axis of the nebula, the response of the double-torus is uniform in azimuth. For a misaligned flow, the leeward sides of the tori respond with some delay relative to their windward sides. The delay can cause a curious swaying in the short midsection of the leeward jet of the compact X-ray nebula. Within the framework of the relativistic magnetohydrodynamical model of a pulsar wind nebula we study the dynamics of the nebular outflows contributing to the swaying of the jet. When applied to the Vela X-ray nebula, the model allows us to naturally relate two distinct phenomena, the swaying of the bright midsection of the Vela lee jet and the reverberation of its double-torus. Under the irradiation of ultraintense laser pulses, targets made of gas, solid, or artificial materials can generate high-energy electrons, ions, and X-rays comparable to conventional accelerators or national light source facilities. Designing and creating high-performance targets are the core problems for laser acceleration. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials can help to build ideal targets that do not exist in nature. This paper reviews the advances in exploiting carbon nanotubes as outstanding targets for laser-driven particle acceleration in memory of Prof. Sishen Xie, the inventor of the fabrication method. We hope that the successful implementation of such targets in enhanced ion acceleration, high-efficiency electron acceleration, and brilliant X-ray generation could attract more interdiscipline interests and promote the development of this field. Core-collapse supernova explosions play a wide role in astrophysics by producing compact remnants (neutron stars or black holes) and the synthesis and injection of many heavy elements into their host galaxy. Because they are produced in some of the most extreme conditions in the universe, they can also probe physics in extreme conditions (matter at nuclear densities and extreme temperatures and magnetic fields). To quantify the impact of supernovae on both fundamental physics and our understanding of the universe, we must leverage a broad set of observables of this engine. In this paper, we study a subset of these probes using a suite of one-dimensional, parameterized mixing models: ejecta remnants from supernovae, ultraviolet, optical and infrared light curves, and transient gamma-ray emission. We review the other diagnostics and show how the different probes tie together to provide a more clear picture of the supernova engine. We studied the PeVatron nature of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G75.2+0.1 ("Dragonfly") as part of our NuSTAR observational campaign of energetic PWNe. The Dragonfly is spatially coincident with LHAASO J2018+3651, whose maximum photon energy is 0.27 PeV. We detected a compact (radius 1 ′) inner nebula of the Dragonfly without a spectral break in 3–20 keV using NuSTAR. A joint analysis of the inner nebula with archival Chandra and XMM-Newton (XMM) observations yields a power-law spectrum with Γ = 1.49 ± 0.03. Synchrotron burnoff is observed from the shrinkage of the NuSTAR nebula at higher energies, from which we infer the magnetic field in the inner nebula of 24 μ G at 3.5 kpc. Our analysis of archival XMM data and 13 yr of Fermi-LAT data confirms the detection of an extended ( ∼ 10 ′) outer nebula in 2–6 keV (Γ = 1.82 ± 0.03) and the nondetection of a GeV nebula, respectively. Using the VLA, XMM, and HAWC data, we modeled a multiwavelength spectral energy distribution of the Dragonfly as a leptonic PeVatron. The maximum injected particle energy of 1.4 PeV from our model suggests that the Dragonfly is likely a PeVatron. Our model prediction of the low magnetic field (2.7 μ G) in the outer nebula and recent interaction with the host supernova remnant's reverse shock (4 kyr ago) align with common features of PeVatron PWNe. The origin of its highly asymmetric morphology, pulsar proper motion, PWN–supernova remnant (SNR) interaction, and source distance will require further investigations in the future, including a multiwavelength study using radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. Combining experimental set up and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we were able to follow the time evolution of the X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) of a dense copper plasma. This provides a deep insight into femtosecond laser interaction with a metallic copper target. This paper presents a review of the experimental developments we made to reduce the X-ray probe duration, from approximately 10 ps to fs duration with table-top laser systems. Moreover, we present microscopic scale simulations, performed with Density Functional Theory, as well as macroscopic simulations considering the Two-Temperature Model. These tools allow us to get a complete picture of the evolution of the target at a microscopic level, from the heating process to the melting and expansion stages, with a clear view of the physics involved during these processes. We perform general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations of super-Eddington accretion flows around a neutron star with a dipole magnetic field for modeling the Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source exhibiting X-ray pulsations, Swift J0243.6+6124. Our simulations show the accretion columns near the magnetic poles, the accretion disk outside the magnetosphere, and the outflows from the disk. It is revealed that the effectively optically thick outflows, consistent with the observed thermal emission at ∼107 K, are generated if the mass accretion rate is much higher than the Eddington rate M ̇ Edd and the magnetospheric radius is smaller than the spherization radius. In order to explain the blackbody radius (∼100–500 km) without contradicting the reported spin period (9.8 s) and spin-up rate ( P ̇ = − 2.22 × 10 − 8 s s − 1 ), a mass accretion rate of (200 – 1200) M ̇ Edd is required. Since the thermal emission was detected in two observations with P ̇ of −2.22 × 10−8 s s−1 and −1.75 × 10−8 s s−1 but not in another with P ̇ = − 6.8 × 10 − 9 s s − 1 , the surface magnetic field strength of the neutron star in Swift J0243.6+6124 is estimated to be between 3 × 1011 G and 4 × 1012 G. From this restricted range of magnetic field strength, the accretion rate would be (200 – 500) M ̇ Edd when the thermal emission appears and (60 – 100) M ̇ Edd when it is not detected. Our results support the hypothesis that the super-Eddington phase in the 2017–2018 giant outburst of Swift J0243.6+6124 is powered by highly super-Eddington accretion flows onto a magnetized neutron star. We present radio very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and X-ray studies of the starburst galaxy NGC 3628. The VLBI observation at 1.5 GHz reveals seven compact (0.7−7 pc) radio sources in the central ∼250 pc region of NGC 3628. Based on their morphology, high radio-brightness temperatures (105–107 K), and steep radio spectra, none of these seven sources can be associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs); instead, they can be identified as supernova remnants (SNRs), with three of them appearing consistent with partial shells. Notably, one of them (W2) is likely a nascent radio supernova (SN) and appears to be consistent with the star formation rate of NGC 3628 when assuming a canonical initial mass function. The VLBI observation provides the first precise measurement of the diameter of the radio sources in NGC 3628, which allow us to fit a well-constrained radio surface brightness—diameter (Σ– D) correlation by including the detected SNRs. Furthermore, future VLBI observations can be conducted to measure the expansion velocity of the detected SNRs. In addition to our radio VLBI study, we analyze Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra of NGC 3628. The spectral fitting indicates that the SNR activities could well account for the observed X-ray emissions. Along with the Chandra X-ray image, it further reveals that the X-ray emission is likely maintained by the galactic-scale outflow triggered by SN activities. These results provide strong evidence that SN-triggered activities play a critical role in generating both radio and X-ray emissions in NGC 3628. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), the most extreme star-forming galaxies in the nearby (D < 30 Mpc) universe, show a notable X-ray emission deficiency (up to a factor of ∼10) compared with predictions from scaling relations of galaxy-wide high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) luminosity with star formation rate. In the nearby (≈20 Mpc) LIRG NGC 7552, the majority of the IR emission originates in a circumnuclear starburst ring, which has been resolved into several discrete knots of star formation. We present results from recent Chandra observations of NGC 7552, which reveal significant deficits in the 2–7 keV X-ray luminosities from two of the most powerful star-forming knots. We hypothesize that the expected luminous HMXB populations in these knots are either (1) obscured by very large column densities or (2) suppressed due to the knots having relatively high metallicity and/or very young ages (≲5 Myr). We distinguish between these possibilities using data from recent NuSTAR observations, whose sensitivity above 10 keV is capable of uncovering heavily obscured HMXB populations, since emission at these energies is more immune to absorption effects. We find no evidence of a heavily obscured HMXB population in the central region of NGC 7552, suggesting suppressed HMXB formation. We further show that metallicity-dependent scaling relations cannot fully account for the observed deficit from the most powerful star-forming knots or the central region as a whole. Thus, we suggest that recent bursts in local star formation activity likely drive the high L IR within these regions on timescales ≲5 Myr, shorter than the timescale required for the formation of HMXBs. We describe the methods of the SRGz system for the physical identification of eROSITA point X-ray sources from photometric data in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys footprint. We consider the models included in the SRGz system (version 2.1) that have allowed us to obtain accurate measurements of the cosmological redshift and class of an X-ray object (quasar/galaxy/star) from multiwavelength photometric sky surveys (DESI LIS, SDSS, Pan-STARRS, WISE, eROSITA) for 87 of the entire eastern extragalactic region ( , ). An important feature of the SRGz system is that its data handling model (identification, classification, photo-z algorithms) is based entirely on heuristic machine learning approaches. For a standard choice of SRGz parameters the optical counterpart identification completeness (recall) in the DESI LIS footprint is (with an optical counterpart selection precision of ); the classification completeness (recall) of X-ray sources without optical counterparts in DESI LIS is ( precision). A high quality of the photometric classification of X-ray source optical counterparts is achieved in SRGz: photometric classification completeness (recall) for extragalactic objects (a quasar or a galaxy) and stars on a test sample of sources with SDSS spectra and GAIA astrometric stars. We present an analysis of the importance of various photometric features for the optical identification and classification of eROSITA X-ray sources. We have shown that the infrared (IR) magnitude , the X-ray/optical(IR) ratios, the optical colors (for example, ), and the IR color () as well as the color distances introduced by us play a significant role in separating the classes of X-ray objects. We use the most important photometric features to interpret the SRGz predictions in this paper. The accuracy of the SRGz photometric redshifts (from DESI LIS, SDSS, Pan-STARRS, and WISE photometric data) has been tested in the Stripe82X field on a sample of 3/4 of the optical counterparts of eROSITA point X-ray sources (for which spectroscopic measurements are available in Stripe82X): (the normalized median absolute deviation of the prediction) and (the fraction of catastrophic outliers). The presented photo-z results for eROSITA X-ray sources in the Stripe82X field are more than a factor of 2 better in both metrics ( and ) than the photo-z results of other groups published in the Stripe82X catalog. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are our best laboratories for studying extreme super-Eddington accretion. Most studies of these objects are of relatively persistent sources; however, there is growing evidence to suggest a large fraction of these sources are transient. Here we present a sample of five newly reported transient ULXs in the galaxies NGC 4945, NGC 7793, and M81 serendipitously discovered in Swift/XRT observations. Swift monitoring of these sources have provided well-sampled lightcurves, allowing for us to model the lightcurves with the disk-instability model of Hameury & Lasota, which implies durations of 60–400 days and that the mass-accretion rate through the disk is close to or greater than the Eddington rate. Of the three source regions with prior Hubble Space Telescope imaging, color–magnitude diagrams of the potential stellar counterparts show varying ages of the possible stellar counterparts. Our estimation of the rates of these sources in these three galaxies is 0.4–1.3 yr−1. We find that, while persistent ULXs dominate the high end of galaxy luminosity functions, the number of systems that produce ULX luminosities are likely dominated by transient sources. The X-ray pulsar 1A 0535+262 exhibited a giant outburst in 2020, offering us a unique opportunity for X-ray polarimetry of an accreting pulsar in the supercritical state. Measurement with PolarLight yielded a nondetection in 3–8 keV; the 99% upper limit of the polarization fraction (PF) is found to be 0.34 averaged over spin phases, or 0.51 based on the rotating vector model. No useful constraint can be placed with phase-resolved polarimetry. These upper limits are lower than a previous theoretical prediction of 0.6–0.8, but consistent with those found in other accreting pulsars, like Her X-1, Cen X-3, 4U 1626−67, and GRO J1008−57, which were in the subcritical state, or at least not confidently in the supercritical state, during the polarization measurements. Our results suggest that the relatively low PF seen in accreting pulsars cannot be attributed to the source not being in the supercritical state, but could be a general feature. In this paper, we reanalyze the X1.7 class limb flare that occurred on 2013 May 13 (SOL2013-05-13T01:56 UT), concentrating on the energy-releasing process using microwave observations mainly made by Nobeyama and X-ray observations made by RHESSI. The analysis was carried out in the context of EUV observations made by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board Solar Dynamics Observatory. First, we complement the initiation process by showing that the initiation occurred together with material falling from a large-scale overlying prominence, a signature of drainage instability. The usual downward and upward motions of the microwave and X-ray sources are observed from their evolution. However, the microwave source's height shows a recurrent decrease and increase during its overall upward motion; it shows a kind of recurrent contraction and expansion. The time period of the recurrent contraction and expansion corresponds to the period of post-contraction oscillation of EUV loops, and the oscillatory motions are closely correlated with four microwave/hard X-ray peaks that unusually increased nonthermal emission levels by several times. X-ray spectra get hardened during the oscillation. In addition, the rapid contraction of magnetic loops located on the outside of the erupting flux rope occurs 5 minutes after the onset of the flare, showing that the contraction of the peripheral magnetic loops is more likely due to the vortex and sink flows generated by an upward erupting magnetic flux rope rather than a coronal implosion. The results can provide more insight into the physics of dynamic coronal magnetic field and particle acceleration during solar flares. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an extension of the study by Khamitov et al. (2022) with regard to the catalog and the astrophysical interpretation of the imitation of significant proper motions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars based on data from the Gaia space observatory. We present a sample of SRG/eROSITA X-ray sources in the eastern Galactic hemisphere () having significant proper motions in the Gaia EDR3 measurements with the confirmed extragalactic nature of the objects. The catalog consists of 248 extragalactic sources with spectroscopically measured redshifts. The catalog includes all of the objects available in the SIMBAD database and coincident with the identified optical counterpart within 0.5 arcsec. Eighteen sources with spectroscopically measured redshifts from observations with the Russian–Turkish 1.5-m telescope RTT-150 (Khamitov et al. 2022) have been additionally included in the catalog. The sources in the catalog are AGNs of various types (Sy1, Sy2, LINER), quasars, radio galaxies, and star-forming galaxies. The imitation of significant proper motions can be explained (by the VIM effect previously known in astrometry) by the presence of transient events on the line of sight in the vicinity of AGNs and quasars (within the Gaia optical resolution element). Among such astrophysical events are supernova outbursts, tidal disruption events in binary AGNs, the variability of high-mass supergiants, the presence of OB associations against the background of AGNs with a variable brightness, etc. The model of outbursts with a fast rise–exponential decay profile allows the variable positional parameters of most sources observed in Gaia to be described. This approach can be used as an independent way of detecting transient events in the vicinity of AGNs (on scales of several hundred parsecs in the plane of the sky) based on data from the SRG/eROSITA catalogs of X-ray sources and the optical Gaia catalog. Gamma-ray binary systems, a subclass of high-mass X-ray binaries, show nonthermal emissions from radio to TeV. While efficient electron acceleration is considered to take place in them, the nature of the acceleration mechanism and the physical environments in these systems have been a long-standing question. In this work, we report on long-term recurrent patterns in the short-term variability of the soft X-ray emission of LS 5039, one of the brightest gamma-ray binary systems. The Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observed LS 5039 four times from 2018 to 2021. By comparing them with the previous Suzaku and NuSTAR long-exposure observations, we studied the long-term evolution of the orbital light curve in the soft X-ray band. Although the observations by NICER and Suzaku are separated by ∼14 yr, i.e., more than 103 orbits, the orbital light curves show remarkable consistency after calculating their running averages with a window width ≳70 ks. Furthermore, all of the light curves show short-term variability with a timescale of ∼10 ks. Since the column density did not vary when the flux changed abruptly, such a short-term variability seems to be an intrinsic feature of the X-ray emission. We propose that the short-term variability is caused by clumps (or inhomogeneities) of the companion star wind impacting the X-ray production site. The observed timescale matches well with the lifetime of the clumps interacting with the pulsar wind and the dynamical timescale of the relativistic intrabinary shock in the pulsar wind scenario. We present a study of weak, thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658. We focus on a burst observed with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer on 2019 August 9, and describe a similar burst observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer in 2005 June. These bursts occurred soon after outburst onset, 2.9 and 1.1 days, after the first indications of fresh accretion. We measure peak burst bolometric fluxes of 6.98 ± 0.50 × 10−9 and 1.54 ± 0.10 × 10−8 erg cm−2 s−1, respectively, which are factors of ≈30 and 15 less than the peak flux of the brightest, helium-powered bursts observed from this source. From spectral modeling we estimate the accretion rates and accreted columns at the time of each burst. For the 2019 burst we estimate an accretion rate of M ̇ ≈ 1.4 – 1.6 × 10 − 10 M ⊙ yr−1, and a column in the range 3.9–5.1 × 107 g cm−2. For the 2005 event the accretion rate was similar, but the accreted column was half of that estimated for the 2019 burst. The low accretion rates, modest columns, and evidence for a cool neutron star in quiescence, suggest these bursts are triggered by thermally unstable CNO cycle hydrogen burning. The post-burst flux level in the 2019 event appears offset from the pre-burst level by an amount consistent with quasi-stable hydrogen burning due to the temperature-insensitive, hot-CNO cycle, further suggesting hydrogen burning as the primary fuel source. To our knowledge, this provides the first strong observational evidence for hydrogen-triggered bursts. We discuss our results in the context of previous theoretical modeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The successful development in the last two decades of X-ray free electron lasers (FELs) with their revolutionary brightness performance has been tightly dependent on the parallel development of electron guns and injectors capable of providing the high-brightness electron beams required by FELs lasing at these short wavelengths. The ultimate brightness delivered by a linear accelerator (linac) is already set at its injector and the remaining part of the accelerator can be only designed to preserve the injector performance. The technology to be used for the accelerator part of an X-Ray FEL strongly depends on the duty-cycle at which the FEL operates. Normal-conducting, room-temperature, copper-based radio frequency (RF) technology is typically used for low duty-cycles of up to approximately 10−3. For higher duty-cycles and up to continuous wave (CW) operation, the linac must rely on superconductive RF technology because, with the higher duty-cycle, the increasingly higher power dissipated in normal conducting RF structures becomes excessive for the warm technology. The situation changes in the lower energy part of the accelerator, where injector schemes, based on direct current, normal-conducting, and superconducting RF electron guns, are demonstrating the beam quality performance required by high-duty-cycle X-ray FELs. In this paper we start with a description of the requirements for such injectors, followed by an overview of the pursued technologies and schemes, and by a discussion on the main differences in terms of beam dynamics between low and high duty-cycle injectors.

We present a detailed X-ray investigation of a region (S1) exhibiting nonthermal X-ray emission within the supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 37B hosting the magnetar CXOU J171405.7−381031. Previous analyses modeled this emission with a power law (PL), inferring various values for the photon index (Γ) and absorbing column density ( N _H ). Based on these, S1 was suggested to be an SNR shell, a background pulsar wind nebula, or an interaction region between the SNR and a molecular cloud. Our analysis of a larger data set favors a steepening (broken or curved PL) spectrum over a straight PL, with the best-fit broken power-law (BPL) parameters of Γ = 1.23 ± 0.23 and 2.24 ± 0.16 below and above a break at 5.57 ± 0.52 keV, respectively. However, a simple PL or srcut model cannot be definitively ruled out. For the BPL model, the inferred N _H = (4.08 ± 0.72) × 10 ^22 cm ^−2 towards S1 is consistent with that of the SNR, suggesting a physical association. The BPL-inferred spectral break ΔΓ ≈ 1 and hard Γ can be naturally explained by a nonthermal bremsstrahlung (NTB) model. We present an evolutionary NTB model that reproduces the observed spectrum, which indicates the presence of subrelativistic electrons within S1. However, alternate explanations for S1, an unrelated PWN or the SNR shock with unusually efficient acceleration, cannot be ruled out. We discuss these explanations and their implications for gamma-ray emission from CTB 37B and describe future observations that could settle the origin of S1.

The Boomerang Nebula is a bright radio and X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) powered by an energetic pulsar, PSR J2229+6114. It is spatially coincident with one of the brightest ultrahigh-energy (UHE; ≥100 TeV) gamma-ray sources, LHAASO J2226+6057. While X-ray observations have provided radial profiles for both the intensity and photon index of the nebula, previous theoretical studies have not reached an agreement on their physical interpretation, which also leads to different anticipation of the UHE emission from the nebula. In this work, we model its X-ray emission with a dynamical evolution model of PWN, considering both convective and diffusive transport of electrons. On the premise of fitting the X-ray intensity and photon index profiles, we find that the magnetic field within the Boomerang Nebula is weak (∼10 μ G in the core region and diminishing to 1 μ G at the periphery), which therefore implies a significant contribution to the UHE gamma-ray emission by the inverse Compton (IC) radiation of injected electron/positron pairs. Depending on the particle transport mechanism, the UHE gamma-ray flux contributed by the Boomerang Nebula via the IC radiation may constitute about 10%–50% of the flux of LHAASO J2226+6057 at 100 TeV and up to 30% at 500 TeV. Finally, we compare our results with previous studies and discuss potential hadronic UHE emission from the PWN. In our modeling, most of the spindown luminosity of the pulsar may be transformed into thermal particles or relativistic protons.

We explore the evolution of the ∼10 ^7 K hot gas in normal galaxies out to redshift = 0.5 (lookback time = 5 Gyr), using X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) built from a sample of 575 normal galaxies with z < 0.6 detected in five high-galactic-latitude Chandra wide-field surveys. After estimating the emission due to the hot gas component (reducing the sample to ∼400 galaxies), we compared the XLF in three redshift bins ( z = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5), finding increases in the number of galaxies per unit comoving volume from z = 0.1 to 0.3 and then from z = 0.3 to 0.5. These XLF changes suggest a significant (∼5 σ ) X-ray luminosity evolution of the hot gas, with L _X,GAS decreasing by a factor of 6–10 in the last 5 Gyr (from z = 0.5 to 0.1). The relative abundance of L _X,GAS ∼ 10 ^41 erg s ^−1 galaxies at higher z suggests that high -z , moderate -L _X,GAS galaxies may be the optimal target to solve the missing baryon problem. In early-type galaxies, this observational trend is qualitatively consistent with (but larger than) the expected time-dependent mass-loss rate in cooling flow models without active galactic nucleus feedback. In late-type galaxies, the observational trend is also qualitatively consistent with (but larger than) the effect of the z -dependent star formation rate.

Circumstellar material (CSM) produced by mass loss from massive stars (≳10 M _⊙ ) through strong stellar winds or binary stripping provides rich information for understanding progenitors of core-collapse supernova remnants. In this paper we present a grating spectroscopy of a Galactic SNR G292.0+1.8, which is claimed to be a Type Ib/c remnant in a binary system according to recent studies. If G292.0+1.8 had experienced a strong mass-loss via binary interactions before its explosion, an oxygen-rich material produced in the He-burning layer is expected to be observed in the central belt-like structure formed by shock-heated CSM. Using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer onboard XMM-Newton, we detect N vii Ly α line (0.50 keV) for the first time in G292.0+1.8 and find that the abundance ratio of nitrogen to oxygen is significantly lower (N/O = 0.5 ± 0.1) than the solar value. This low N/O suggests that the progenitor of G292.0+1.8 experienced strong mass-loss and ended up as a Wolf–Rayet star exposing the He-burning layer at the presupernova. Comparing our result and the evolution models of single stars and binaries, we conclude that the progenitor of G292.0+1.8 experienced strong enough mass-loss to occur a Type Ib/c supernova. Our finding is another crucial piece of evidence for a stripped-envelope supernova such as Type Ib/c as the origin of G292.0+1.8.

Stellar winds from massive stars may be significant sources of cosmic rays (CRs). To investigate this connection, we report a detailed study of gamma-ray emission near the young Milky Way star cluster (≈0.5 Myr old) in the star-forming region RCW 38 and compare this emission to its stellar wind properties and diffuse X-ray emission. Using 15 yr of Fermi-LAT data in the 0.2–300 GeV band, we find a significant ( σ > 22) detection coincident with the star cluster, producing a total gamma-ray luminosity (extrapolated over 0.1–500 GeV) of L _γ =(2.66 ± 0.92) × 10 ^34 erg s ^−1 adopting a power-law spectral model (Γ = 2.34 ± 0.04). Using an empirical relationship and STARBURST99 , we estimate the total wind power to be 8 × 10 ^36 erg s ^−1 , corresponding to a CR acceleration efficiency of η _CR ≃ 0.4 for an assumed diffusion coefficient consistent with D = 10 ^28 cm ^2 s ^−1 . Alternatively, a lower acceleration efficiency of 0.1 can produce this L _γ if the diffusion coefficient is smaller, D ≃ 2.5 × 10 ^27 cm ^2 s ^−1 . Additionally, we analyze Chandra X-ray data from the region and compare the hot-gas pressure to the CR pressure. We find the former is 4 orders of magnitude greater, suggesting that the CR pressure is not dynamically important relative to stellar winds. As RCW 38 is too young for supernovae to have occurred, the high CR acceleration efficiency in RCW 38 demonstrates that stellar winds may be an important source of Galactic CRs.

We present near-simultaneous X-ray and optical polarization measurements in the high synchrotron peaked (HSP) blazar Mrk 421. The X-ray polarimetric observations were carried out using Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) on 2023 December 6. During IXPE observations, we also carried out optical polarimetric observations using 104 cm Sampurnanand telescope at Nainital and multiband optical imaging observations using 2 m Himalayan Chandra Telescope at Hanle. From model-independent analysis of IXPE data, we detected X-ray polarization with degree of polarization (Π _X ) of 8.5% ± 0.5% and an electric vector position angle (Ψ _X ) of 10.°6 ± 1.°7 in the 2−8 keV band. From optical polarimetry on 2023 December 6, in B , V , and R bands, we found values of Π _B = 4.27% ± 0.32%, Π _V = 3.57% ± 0.31%, and Π _R = 3.13% ± 0.25%. The value of Π _B is greater than that observed at longer optical wavelengths, with the degree of polarization suggesting an energy-dependent trend, gradually decreasing from higher to lower energies. This is consistent with that seen in other HSP blazars and favors a stratified emission region encompassing a shock front. The emission happening in the vicinity of the shock front will be more polarized due to the ordered magnetic field resulting from shock compression. The X-ray emission, involving high-energy electrons, originates closer to the shock front than the optical emission. The difference in the spatial extension could plausibly account for the observed variation in polarization between X-ray and optical wavelengths. This hypothesis is further supported by the broadband spectral energy distribution modeling of the X-ray and optical data.

We present the results of bicoherence analysis for Swift J1727.8−1613 during its 2023 outburst, using data from Insight-HXMT. Our analysis focused on observations with quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) of frequencies greater than 1 Hz, revealing that all of them belong to type-C QPOs. We found a strong correlation between the QPO frequency and the hardness ratio, as well as a linear relationship between the QPO rms and the hardness ratio. The bicoherence analysis revealed a transition from a “web” pattern to a “hypotenuse” pattern in the low-energy (LE) and high-energy (HE) bands. In the bicoherence patterns, there are correlations between horizontal and vertical bicoherence at f _1 = f _2 = f _QPO with count rates. The diagonal structure at f _1 + f _2 = f _QPO becomes more prominent with increasing energy. Additionally, we discovered a new bicoherence pattern in the medium energy band from 10 to 20 keV; the diagonal structure at f _1 + f _2 = f _har is prominent only in this energy band, which we refer to as the “parallel” pattern. The bicoherence analysis indicates that the source is likely a low-inclination source.

The Fermi and eROSITA bubbles (FBs and eRBs), large diffuse structures in our Galaxy, can be the by-products of steady star formation activity. To simultaneously explain the star formation history of the Milky Way (MW) and the metallicity of ∼ Z _⊙ at the Galactic disk, a steady Galactic wind driven by cosmic rays (CRs) is required. For tenuous gases with a density of ≲10 ^−3 cm ^−3 , CR heating dominates over radiative cooling, and the gas can maintain the virial temperature of ∼0.3 keV, ideal for escape from the Galactic system as the wind. A part of the wind falls back onto the disk like a Galactic fountain flow. We model the wind dynamics according to the Galactic evolution scenario and find that the scale height and surface brightness of the X-ray and the hadronic gamma-ray emissions from such fountain flow region can be consistent with the observed properties of the FBs and eRBs. This implies that the bubbles are persistent structures of the MW existing over (at least) the last ∼1 Gyr rather than evanescent structures formed by nontrivial, ∼10 Myr past Galactic center transient activities.

ACT-CL J0034.4+0225 is a previously unrecognized merging galaxy cluster at z = 0.38588 ± 0.00068. Our primary evidence is provided by a 21 ks Chandra image that shows two surface brightness peaks separated by ∼49″ (259 kpc) surrounded by an extended cluster gas distribution. Each gas peak contains a brightest cluster galaxy, offset from the gas peak. We collect new South African Large Telescope optical spectra that, when augmented by archival data, yield redshifts for the two BGCs and 58 other cluster members. Archival Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and MeerKAT data reveal a radio halo that encompasses the X-ray peaks. We provide and compare three X-ray-based mass estimates (5.0 × 10 ^14 M _⊙ , 6.4 × 10 ^14 M _⊙ , and 8.6 × 10 ^14 M _⊙ ). The Planck and ACT Sunyaev–Zel’dovich masses are ≈5.8 × 10 ^14 M _⊙ . We constrain the merger state and properties by comparing them to an existing suite of N-body/hydrodynamical models using the measured gas peak separation (259 kpc, projected) and radial velocity difference (0–1000 km s ^−1 ). This constrains the epoch of the merger to be within ∼100 Myr of first pericenter passage. A strong lensing analysis constrains the mass ratio to be in the range 1:1–1:20, while the cluster morphology prefers values near the equal-mass range.

We report 13 years of Chandra monitoring of the youngest Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3, the only remnant known to be increasing in brightness. We confirm the spatially integrated rate of flux increase of (1.2 ± 0.2)% yr ^−1 (1–7 keV), but find large spatial variations, from −3% yr ^−1 to +7% yr ^−1 , over length scales as small as 10″ or smaller. We observe relatively little change in spectral slope, though one region shows significant hardening as it brightens by 1% yr ^−1 . Such rates of change can be accommodated by any of several explanations, including steady blast-wave evolution, expansion or compression of discrete plasma blobs, magnetic turbulence, or variations in magnetic-field aspect angle. Our results do not constrain the mean magnetic-field strength, but a self-consistent picture can be produced in which the maximum particle energies are limited by the remnant age (applying both to electrons and to ions) to about 20 TeV, and the remnant-averaged magnetic-field strength is about 30 μ G. The deceleration parameter m (average shock radius varying as t ^m ) is about 0.7, consistent with estimates from overall expansion dynamics and confirming an explosion date of about 1900 CE. Shock-efficiency factors ϵ _e and ϵ _B (fractions of shock energy in relativistic electrons and magnetic field) are 0.003 and 0.0002 in this picture. However, the large range of rates of brightness change indicates that such a global model is oversimplified. Temporal variations of photon index, expected to be small but measurable with longer time baselines, can discriminate among possible models.

Gamma-ray binary LS I+61° 303 consists of a neutron star orbiting around a Be star with a period of P _orb ≃ 26.5 days. Apart from orbital modulations, the binary shows long-term flux variations with a superorbital period of ${P}_{\sup }\simeq 4.6\,{\rm{y}}{\rm{r}}$ as seen in nearly all wavelengths. The origin of this superorbital modulation is still not well understood. Under the pulsar wind–stellar outflow interaction scenario, we propose that the superorbital modulations of LS I+61° 303 could be caused by the precession of the Be disk. Assuming X-rays arise from synchrotron radiation of the intrabinary shock, we develop an analytical model to calculate expected flux modulations over the orbital and superorbital phases. The asymmetric two-peak profiles in orbital light curves and sinusoidal-like long-term modulations are reproduced under the precessing disk scenario. The observed orbital phase drifting of the X-ray peak and our fitting of long-term X-ray data indicate that the neutron star is likely orbiting around the star with a small eccentricity and periastron phase around Φ _p ∼ 0.6. We compare the Corbet diagrams of LS I+61° 303 with other Be/X-ray binaries, and the linear correlation in the ${P}_{\sup }\mbox{--}{P}_{\mathrm{orb}}$ diagram suggests that the precession of the Be disk in LS I+61° 303 is induced by the tidal torque of its neutron star companion.

The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) is a virtual X-ray astrophysics facility that enables both detailed individual source studies and statistical studies of large samples of X-ray sources detected in Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer and High Resolution Camera-I imaging observations obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The catalog provides carefully curated, high-quality, and uniformly calibrated and analyzed tabulated positional, spatial, photometric, spectral, and temporal source properties, as well as science-ready X-ray data products. The latter includes multiple types of source- and field-based FITS format products that can be used as a basis for further research, significantly simplifying follow-up analysis of scientifically meaningful source samples. We discuss in detail the algorithms used for the CSC Release 2 Series, including CSC 2.0, which includes 317,167 unique X-ray sources on the sky identified in observations released publicly through the end of 2014, and CSC 2.1, which adds Chandra data released through the end of 2021 and expands the catalog to 407,806 sources. Besides adding more recent observations, the CSC Release 2 Series includes multiple algorithmic enhancements that provide significant improvements over earlier releases. The compact source sensitivity limit for most observations is ∼5 photons over most of the field of view, which is ∼2× fainter than Release 1, achieved by coadding observations and using an optimized source detection approach. A Bayesian X-ray aperture photometry code produces robust fluxes even in crowded fields and for low-count sources. The current release, CSC 2.1, is tied to the Gaia-CRF3 astrometric reference frame for the best sky positions for catalog sources.

Hard X-ray-emitting ( δ -type) symbiotic binaries, which exhibit a strong hard X-ray excess, have posed a challenge to our understanding of accretion physics in degenerate dwarfs. RT Cru, which is a member of the δ -type symbiotics, shows stochastic X-ray variability. Timing analyses of X-ray observations from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, which we consider here, indicate hourly fluctuations, in addition to a spectral transition from 2007 to a harder state in 2012 seen with Suzaku observations. To trace the nature of X-ray variability, we analyze the multimission X-ray data using principal component analysis (PCA), which determines the spectral components that contribute most to the flickering behavior and the hardness transition. The Chandra HRC-S/LETG and XMM-Newton EPIC-pn data provide the primary PCA components, which may contain some variable emission features, especially in the soft excess. Additionally, the absorbing column (first order with 50%), along with the source continuum (20%), and a third component (9%)—which likely accounts for thermal emission in the soft band—are the three principal components found in the Suzaku XIS1 observations. The PCA components of the NuSTAR data also correspond to the continuum and possibly emission features. Our findings suggest that the spectral hardness transition between the two Suzaku observations is mainly due to changes in the absorbing material and X-ray continuum, while some changes in the thermal plasma emission may result in flickering-type variations.

We model the currently available γ -ray data on Cyg X-3 from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Thanks to Cyg X-3’s very strong γ -ray activity during 2018–2021, the data quality has significantly improved. We study the strong orbital modulation of the γ -rays observed at high γ -ray fluxes. The modulation, as found earlier, is well modeled by anisotropic Compton scattering of the donor blackbody emission by relativistic electrons in a jet strongly misaligned with respect to the orbital axis. We confirm that this model fits well both the average γ -ray modulation light curve and the spectrum. However, we find that if the jet were aligned with the spin axis of a rotating black hole, it would undergo geodetic precession with a period of ∼50 yr. However, its presence is ruled out by both the γ -ray and radio data. Therefore, we consider an alternative model in which the average jet direction is aligned, but it is bent outside the orbit owing to the thrust of the donor stellar wind, and thus precesses at the orbital period. The γ -ray modulation then appears as a result of the variable Doppler boosting of synchrotron self-Compton jet emission. This model also fits the data well. However, the fitted bending angle is much larger than the theoretical one based on the binary and wind parameters as currently known. Thus, both models disagree with important aspects of our current theoretical understanding of the system. We discuss possible ways to find the correct model.

A large fraction of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) sources in the fourth Fermi-LAT 14 yr catalog (4FGL) still remain unidentified (unIDed). We continued to improve our machine-learning pipeline and used it to classify 1206 X-ray sources with signal-to-noise ratios >3 located within the extent of 73 unIDed 4FGL sources with Chandra X-ray Observatory observations included in the Chandra Source Catalog 2.0. Recent improvements to our pipeline include astrometric corrections, probabilistic cross-matching to lower-frequency counterparts, and a more realistic oversampling method. X-ray sources are classified into eight broad predetermined astrophysical classes defined in the updated training data set, which we also release. We present details of the machine-learning classification, describe the pipeline improvements, and perform an additional spectral and variability analysis for brighter sources. The classifications give 103 plausible X-ray counterparts to 42 GeV sources. We identify 2 GeV sources as isolated neutron star candidates, 16 as active galactic nucleus candidates, seven as sources associated with star-forming regions, and eight as ambiguous cases. For the remaining 40 unIDed 4FGL sources, we could not identify any plausible counterpart in X-rays, or they are too close to the Galactic Center. Finally, we outline the observational strategies and further improvements in the pipeline that can lead to more accurate classifications.
