1. Spatially explicit regionalization of airborne flux measurements using environmental response functions

Abstract

The goal of this study is to characterize the sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat exchange for different land covers in the heterogeneous steppe landscape of the Xilin River catchment, Inner Mongolia, China. Eddy-covariance flux measurements at 50–100 m above ground were conducted in July 2009 using a weight-shift microlight aircraft. Wavelet decomposition of the turbulence data enables a spatial discretization of 90 m of the flux measurements. For a total of 8446 flux observations during 12 flights, MODIS land surface temperature (LST) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) in each flux footprint are determined. Boosted regression trees are then used to infer an environmental response function (ERF) between all flux observations (H, LE) and biophysical (LST, EVI) and meteorological drivers. Numerical tests show that ERF predictions covering the entire Xilin River catchment (&approx;3670 km2) are accurate to ≤18% (1 σ). The predictions are then summarized for each land cover type, providing individual estimates of source strength (36 W m−2 < H < 364 W m−2, 46 W m−2 < LE < 425 W m−2) and spatial variability (11 W m−2 < σH < 169 W m−2, 14 W m−2 < σLE < 152 W m−2) to a precision of ≤5%. Lastly, ERF predictions of land cover specific Bowen ratios are compared between subsequent flights at different locations in the Xilin River catchment. Agreement of the land cover specific Bowen ratios to within 12 &pm; 9% emphasizes the robustness of the presented approach. This study indicates the potential of ERFs for (i) extending airborne flux measurements to the catchment scale, (ii) assessing the spatial representativeness of long-term tower flux measurements, and (iii) designing, constraining and evaluating flux algorithms for remote sensing and numerical modelling applications.

2. Experimental Study on Bond Behavior of FRP-Concrete Interface in Hygrothermal Environment

Abstract

As the technique of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite material strengthened reinforced concrete structures is widely used in the field of civil engineering, durability of the strengthened structures has attracted more attention in recent years. Hygrothermal environment has an adverse effect on the bond behavior of the interface between FRP and concrete. This paper focuses on the bond durability of carbon fiber laminate- (CFL-) concrete interface in hygrothermal condition which simulates the climate characteristic in South China. Twenty 100 mm × 100 mm × 720 mm specimens were divided into 6 groups based on different temperature and humidity. After pretreatment in hygrothermal environment, the specimens were tested using double shear method. Strain gauges bonded along the CFL surface and linear variation displacement transducers (LVDTs) were used to measure longitudinal strains and slip of the interface. Failure mode, ultimate capacity, load-deflection relationship, and relative slip were analyzed. The bond behavior of FRP-concrete interface under hygrothermal environment was studied. Results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the interface reduced after exposure to hygrothermal environments. The decreasing ranges were up to 27.9% after exposure at high temperature and humidity (60°C, 95% RH). The maximum strains (εmax) of the specimens pretreated decreased obviously which indicated decay of the bond behavior after exposure to the hygrothermal environment.

Abstract

The Monkhorst–Pack scheme is a method to save time in the days of slow computers. It excludes umklapp phonons with significant consequences. Its widespread application to evaluate superconductivity arises from the desire to reduce phonon contributions to solve a historical difficulty of the BCS theory. An alternative method turns out to be more accurate in Pb and Pd.

4. Electrical switching in a Fe-thiacrown molecular device.

Abstract

First-principles calculations are performed to inspect the electronic and transport properties of a Fe-thiacrown molecular device, namely, a Au-Fe(9S3)2-Au junction. It is found that the junction has a low-spin (LS) ground state and a high-spin (HS) metastable state. Further study shows that the HS state is a conducting state while the LS state is a nearly insulating one, which means that a switch between these two spin configurations results in a good electrical switching behavior and can serve as an ON/OFF state for a logic unit. Thus, it may find applications as switches or memories in molecular electronic circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We reported the effect of the deposition time of barrier layers on optical and structural properties of high-efficiency green-light-emitting InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) by photoluminescence (PL) and high-resolution x-ray diffraction techniques. The MQW samples on (0001)-plane sapphire substrates were prepared with a ramping method by metalorganic chemical deposition. It was found that the structural or interface quality of the MQW system improved as the deposition time of barrier layers increased from 10 to 14 min, but lattice relaxation was still observed. The relaxation degree decreases from 33% to 6% as the deposition time increases. Temperature-dependent PL measurements from 12 to 300 K indicated that the integrated PL intensities start to decay rapidly as temperature rises above 50 K for the sample with the shorter deposition time, and above 100 K for the sample with the longer deposition time. The luminescence thermal quenching of the two samples suggests the two nonradiative recombination centers based on a fit to Arrhenius plot of the normalized integrated PL intensity over the entire temperature range. The first centers at higher temperatures show less difference for the two samples. The second centers at lower temperatures can be attributed to the trapping of carriers at the rough interface for the sample with the shorter deposition time and to the thermal quenching of bound excitons for the sample with the longer deposition time, respectively. Abstract

The dielectric behavior and the features of the diffused phase transition of the Sr(sub p)-Sm(sub 6-p)-Ti(sub 8-p)-Nb(sub 2+p)O(sub 30) ceramics were investigated together with their structure. Both Sr5SmTi3Nb7O30 and Sr4Sm2Ti4Nb6O30 reported to have tungsten bronze structure and weak ferroelectrics nature.

Abstract

Abstract The effects of La/Sn co-substitution at A and B sites of Ba4Nd2Ti4Ta6O30 ceramics were investigated. With La/Sn co-substitution, the temperature coefficient was significantly improved to near zero, at the same time, dielectric constant reduced and dielectric loss increased. In particular, remarkable annealing effects on dielectric properties were observed for these modified ceramics. 13. High-power, near-diffraction-limited, narrowband ring optical parametric oscillator with counterdirectional mode coupling at 1.53 µm.

Abstract

A continuous-wave (CW) singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) employing a volume Bragg grating (VBG) in a ring resonator is demonstrated. Similar to a linear cavity, the minute absorption induces surface distortion and frequency shift in both nonlinear crystal and grating. The joint thermal effects are proved to account for the unconventional OPO performance in regard to power stability, spectrum and beam quality. However, counterdirectional mode coupling of the signal at ~1.53 µm with considerable power is first observed from the VBG-based resonator and what theory suggests would be a unidirectional ring. This is believed to originate from the grating structure and has some influence on threshold and stability of the OPO. Up to 4.6 W of narrowband (~0.09 nm), diffraction limited (M2  ⩽  1.2) radiation at 1.53 µm has been obtained in our experiment, together with 2.8 W of output idler at 3.49 µm. Abstract

WOS: 000345591500001, Using 1.06 x 10(8) psi(3686) events recorded in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s = 3.686 GeV with the BESIII at the BEPCII collider, we present searches for C-parity violation in J/psi -> gamma gamma and gamma phi decays via psi(3686) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-). No significant signals are observed in either channel. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set to be B(J/psi -> gamma gamma) < 2.7 x 10(-7) and B(J/psi -> gamma phi) < 1.4 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level.
