We report the highly efficient conversion of readily available biomass-derived polyols with amines to valuable furfurylamines or β-amino alcohols compounds using ruthenium catalysis. The reaction outcome is readily tuned by the simple addition of 4 ​Å molecular sieves (furfurylamines vs. β-amino alcohols) with high chemo-selectivity. The proposed reaction mechanism involves ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogen borrowing for the reduction of the imine intermediate and C–C bond cleavage of polyols via a retro-aldol process. A series of arylamines was successfully transformed into the desired products with moderate to good yields.

Glycerol is a new green organic solvent. It not only acts as a phase transfer catalyst but also as a recyclable solvent by significantly enhancing the intramolecular cyclization. A series of 4-aryl-7,7 -dimethyl-5-oxo-3,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydrocoumarin derivatives were synthesized by one-pot multicomponent reaction of Meldrum’s acid with benzaldehyde, and cyclohexanedione in glycerol. Compared to classic methods, this method has the advantages of milder reaction conditions, good yields, easy processing and environmental benignity.

In the molecule of the title compound, C18H22N2O3, the dihydropyrimidinone ring adopts an envelope conformation. The dihedral angle between the phenyl ring and the mean plane through the enamine fragment is 86.04 (7)°. The molecular conformation is stabilized by an intramolecular C—H...O hydrogen bond. In the crystal, intermolecular N—H...O hydrogen bonds link pairs of molecules into centrosymmetric dimers.

An effective method for the P-alkylation of N-arylphosphinecarboxamides was demonstrated. Primary N-arylphosphinecarboxamides without additional protection underwent P-monoalkylation with various alkyl halides in the presence of cesium carbonate as a promoter. Fifteen 2-(5-(aryloxymethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylthio)-N-arylacetamides were efficiently synthesized from the reaction of 2-chloro-N-arylacetamide with 5-(aryloxymethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol under solvent-free conditions at room temperature via grinding. 2-amino-5-aryloxymethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazoles were synthesized rapidly by a microwave-accelerated solvent-free procedure in high yield via the condensation of thiosemicarbazide with aryloxyacetic acids using poly(ethylene glycol) supported dichlorophosphate as a dehydration reagent. The solvent-free N-acylation of 2-amino-5-aryloxymethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazoles with coumarin-3-carboxylic acid chloride or benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid chloride efficiently afforded corresponding bis-heterocyclic derivatives, 2-(coumarin-3-carboxamido)-5-aryloxymethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazoles, and 2-(benzofuran-2-carboxamido)-5-aryloxymethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazoles.
