Background and objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in prostate volume (PV) derived from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI), and to further investigate the role of TRUS prostate-specific antigen density (PSAD) and mpMRI-PSAD in prostate cancer (PCa) detection in biopsy-naïve men. Methods: Patients who underwent an initial prostate biopsy within 3 mo after mpMRI between January 2016 and December 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of both TRUS-PSAD and mpMRI-PSAD for PCa detection were calculated and compared. The Pearson correlation coefficient, Bland-Altman plot, and receiver operating characteristic curve were also utilized to explore the interests of this study. Key findings and limitations: The median prostate-specific antigen level of 875 patients was 9.79 (interquartile range [IQR]: 7.09–13.50) ng/ml. Field observations have confirmed that halide ions are widely distributed among aerosols from the marine boundary layer and on the surfaces of ice and snow in polar regions. Consequently, the coexistence of halide ions may play a more significant role in nitrate photolysis than previously thought. In this study, we simultaneously measured HONO, NO2, and NO2−in situ to gain a deeper understanding of the coexisting system, including the photogenerated nitrogen products and the effects on nitrate photolysis rates due to enhanced aqueous nitrite and HONO transfer rates by halides. The presence of halides significantly increased the photogenerated nitrogen products across various molar ratios ([X–]/[NO3−]) at pH 3.5. By eliminating oxygen flux, the transformation of the primary photogenerated products was affected, resulting in higher concentrations of N(III) as both HONO and NO2−. Experiments involving OH scavengers indicated that the attack from·OH initiated by halides leads to side reactions that enhance nitrate photolysis. Both theoretical calculations and nitrate actinometry were used to determine the photolysis rate of nitrate solutions, which together indicated that the presence of halides enhances nitrate photolysis. A newly developed model was used to determine the HONO transfer rate, finding that the presence of halides ([X–]/[NO3−] = 0.2) enhanced the evaporation of N(III) in solution by factors of 0.68, 0.95, and 1.27 for Cl−, Br−, and I−, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first determination of halide effects on the mass transfer of HONO. The enhanced nitrate photolysis rate can be attributed to the differential surface effects of halides and parallel reactions initiated via ·OH stemming from nitrate photolysis, with varying rates leading to different quantities of nitrogenous products. Additionally, simultaneous measurements of photoproducts in both gas and condensed phases are recommended to better constrain the rate constants of NO3− photolysis.

Abstract. Background:. Bladder cancer, characterized by a high potential of tumor recurrence, has high lifelong monitoring and treatment costs. To date, tumor cells with intrinsic softness have been identified to function as cancer stem cells in several cancer types. Nonetheless, the existence of soft tumor cells in bladder tumors remains elusive. Thus, our study aimed to develop a micro-barrier microfluidic chip to efficiently isolate deformable tumor cells from distinct types of bladder cancer cells. Methods:. The stiffness of bladder cancer cells was determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The modified microfluidic chip was utilized to separate soft cells, and the 3D Matrigel culture system was to maintain the softness of tumor cells. Expression patterns of integrin β8 (ITGB8), protein kinase B (AKT), and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) were determined by Western blotting. Double immunostaining was conducted to examine the interaction between F-actin and tripartite motif containing 59 (TRIM59). The stem-cell-like characteristics of soft cells were explored by colony formation assay and in vivo studies upon xenografted tumor models. Results:. Using our newly designed microfluidic approach, we identified a small fraction of soft tumor cells in bladder cancer cells. More importantly, the existence of soft tumor cells was confirmed in clinical human bladder cancer specimens, in which the number of soft tumor cells was associated with tumor relapse. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the biomechanical stimuli arising from 3D Matrigel activated the F-actin/ITGB8/TRIM59/AKT/mTOR/glycolysis pathways to enhance the softness and tumorigenic capacity of tumor cells. Simultaneously, we detected a remarkable up-regulation in ITGB8, TRIM59, and phospho-AKT in clinical bladder recurrent tumors compared with their non-recurrent counterparts. Conclusions:. The ITGB8/TRIM59/AKT/mTOR/glycolysis axis plays a crucial role in modulating tumor softness and stemness. Meanwhile, the soft tumor cells become more sensitive to chemotherapy after stiffening, that offers new insights for hampering tumor progression and recurrence.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly influence air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and human health. An observational study was performed at the urban site of Hangzhou, China, to analyze VOC characteristics, sources, chemical reactivities, and their impact on ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation throughout the year 2021. During the observation period, alkanes (40.13%) emerging as the predominant VOC species. Seasonal variation in VOCs followed the order of winter (26.49 ppb) > spring (23.63 ppb) > summer (23.62 ppb) > autumn (20.47 ppb). The results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that solvent usage, combustion, and vehicle exhaust were the dominant VOC sources. Regional transport from nearby provinces also significantly contributed to VOC levels. These contributions varied seasonally, with southeastern air masses prevailing in both spring and autumn, eastern air masses impacting summer, and northwestern air masses affecting winter. The campaign-averaged value of total hydroxyl (OH) radicals was 19.08 s−1. NO2 accounted for the most significant contribution to the overall OH reactivity (39.11%), followed by VOCs (28.72%). Notable seasonal fluctuations in OH reactivity followed the order of winter (24.20 s−1) > spring (19.22 s−1) > autumn (18.07 s−1) > summer (14.86 s−1). The average ozone formation potential (OFP) for the measured VOCs was calculated as 75.54 ppb, with alkenes being the dominant contributor. The highest value was observed in spring (83.05 ppb), the lowest value was in autumn (60.43 ppb). The SOA formation potential, mainly contributed by the aromatics, was averaged as 2.92 μg m−3. Additionally, the top four SOA-contributing species across four seasons were toluene, benzene, m-xylene, and ethylbenzene. VOC–PM2.5 sensitivity analysis showed that VOCs exhibited higher sensitivity to PM2.5 on clean level (PM2.5 < 35 μg m−3) than on level with heavy pollution. Alkenes, oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and aromatics played significant roles in the transformations of O3 and SOA in Hangzhou. Therefore, controlling the concentrations of these species is crucial for reducing complex atmospheric pollution in the region. Overall, this study compiles scientific evidence on pollution sources in Hangzhou, providing the government with valuable information.

We attempted to perform risk categories based on the free/total prostate-specific antigen ratio (%fPSA), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density (PSAD, in ng ml−2), and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) step by step, with the goal of determining the best clinical diagnostic strategy to avoid unnecessary tests and prostate biopsy (PBx) in biopsy-naïve men with PSA levels ranging from 4 ng ml−1 to 10 ng ml−1. We included 439 patients who had mpMRI and PBx between August 2018 and July 2021 (West China Hospital, Chengdu, China). To detect clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) on PBx, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves and their respective area under the curve were calculated. Based on %fPSA, PSAD, and Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) scores, the negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV) were calculated sequentially. The optimal %fPSA threshold was determined to be 0.16, and the optimal PSAD threshold was 0.12 for %fPSA ≥0.16 and 0.23 for %fPSA

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy and prognostic factors of transnasal endoscopic optic decompression in the treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON).MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed on 13 TON patients in The Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Shenzhen Eye Hospital in Shenzhen City (China) from June 2020 to April 2022. These patients had received transnasal endoscopic optic decompression, and hormonal and neurotrophic drugs were given after surgery. Visual acuity (VA) improvement was used as the criterion to judge clinical efficacy.ResultsIn a total of 13 patients, 13 injured eyes (12 men and 1 woman; mean age, 28.0 ± 11.8 years) received transnasal endoscopic optic decompression. After surgery, nine patients had improved VA, whereas four patients failed to show any improvement, resulting in a total effective rate of 69.2%. Of the six patients with no light perception preoperatively, three had effective results after the operation, giving an effective rate of 50.0%. Of the seven patients with residual light sensation preoperatively, six had effective results after the operation, giving an effective rate of 85.7%. Of the 10 patients operated on within 7 days after injury, seven had effective results, giving an effective rate of 70%. Of the three patients injured and operated on after 7 days, two had effective results, giving an effective rate of 66.7%.ConclusionTransnasal endoscopic optic nerve decompression is an effective treatment method for TON. The presence of residual light perception and the timing of surgery within 7 days are crucial to the prognosis.

BackgroundRecent EAU guideline strongly recommended combined targeted biopsy (TBx) with systematic biopsy (SBx) for biopsy naïve patients with suspected multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) lesions; However, the clinical goal is to find out how to determine the optimal SBx and TBx cores for biopsy in order to maximize the detection of csPCa and minimize the associated defects. This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of the new biopsy strategy combining 6-core systematic and 3-core MRI- TBx compared to 12-core systematic and 3-core MRI-TBx strategy.MethodsThis is a single-center, prospectively randomized controlled clinical trial. 280 men meeting inclusion criteria will be recruited and will be randomly allocated to either 6-core systematic plus 3-core MRI-TBx group (Group A) or 12-core systematic plus 3-core MRI-TBx group (Group B). The primary outcome compares the detection rate of PCa and clinically significant prostate cancer(csPCa) between group A and group B. Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and urinary incontinence (UI) among a representative sample of the US women. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of women younger than 65 years using the 1999 to 2016 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) populations. DII were calculated based on baseline dietary intake using 24-h dietary recalls. UI was determined and categorized by self-reported questions. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between DII and UI. Stratified linear regression models were applied to test for interaction in prespecified subgroup of interest. A total of 13,441 women age between 20 and 65 years were included in the final analysis. Of these participants 3230 (24.03%) complained of urgency UI, 5276 (39.25%) complained of stress UI and 2028 (15.09%) complained of mixed UI. On multivariate analysis, analysis with DII categorized as quartiles revealed significantly increase odds of urgency UI in the most pro-inflammatory quartile compared to the most anti-inflammatory quartile (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.07–1.44, P = 0.004 for trend) in full adjustment model. Similar results were observed in SUI (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.00–1.30, P = 0.021 for trend) and MUI (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.02−1.43, P = 0.022 for trend). More pro-inflammatory diets, as presented by higher DII scores are associated with an increased likelihood of UI in American women younger than 65 years. Further studies are needed to explore the possible physiological mechanism and evaluate the potential therapeutic implications.

Biochemical recurrence (BCR) is important for measuring the oncological outcomes of patients who undergo radical prostatectomy (RP). Whether transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has negative postoperative effects on oncological outcomes remains controversial. The primary aim of our retrospective study was to determine whether a history of TURP could affect the postoperative BCR rate. We retrospectively reviewed patients with prostate cancer (PCa) who had undergone RP between January 2009 and October 2017. Clinical data on age, prostate volume, serum prostate-specific antigen levels (PSA), biopsy Gleason score (GS), metastasis stage (TNM), D'Amico classification, and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification were collected. Statistical analyses including Cox proportional hazard models and sensitivity analyses which included propensity score matching, were performed, and the inverse-probability-of-treatment-weighted estimator and standardized mortality ratio-weighted estimator were determined. We included 1083 patients, of which 118 had a history of TURP. Before matching, the non-TURP group differed from the TURP group with respect to GS (P= 0.047), prostate volume (mean: 45.19 vs 36.00 ml, P < 0.001), and PSA level (mean: 29.41 vs 15.11 ng ml−1, P= 0.001). After adjusting for age, PSA level, T stage, N stage, M stage, and GS, the TURP group showed higher risk of BCR (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.27, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13–3.94, P= 0.004). After matching (ratio 1:4), patients who underwent TURP were still more likely to develop BCR according to the adjusted propensity score (HR: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.05–3.79, P= 0.034). Among patients with PCa, those with a history of TURP were more likely to develop BCR after RP.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widely present in water environment, which can threaten ecological sustainability and human health. The concentrations of VOCs and their ecological risks in drinking water are of great concern to human beings. Therefore, 54 kinds of VOCs were investigated from 58 locations of the Yangtze River Delta Region (Yangtze River, Qiantang River, Huangpu River, Taihu Lake and Jiaxing Urban River). Out of 54 target compounds, only 31 VOCs were detected, with total concentrations ranging from 0.570 to 46.820 μg/L from 58 locations of all drinking water sources. Among all detected VOCs compounds, only toluene and styrene can cause high-level ecological risk at location TH-2 of Taihu Lake. According to the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk index, compounds such as 1,2-dichloroethane, bromodichloromethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane posed a higher carcinogenic risk, and 1,2-dichloroethane, trichloroethylene and toluene posed a higher non-carcinogenic risk. Olfactory risks of water bodies in the Yangtze River Delta region are negligible. Although the concentrations of VOCs in the Yangtze River Delta region did not exceed national standards in China and guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water, the presence of some ecological and health risks indicated that future monitoring studies and control practices are important to ensure ecological safety of drinking water sources.

Objective: To compare these managements focusing on the efficacy and safety to treat overactive bladder (OAB) in children through network meta-analysis (NMA). Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and the reference lists up to May 1st, 2017. Data from eligible randomized controlled trails (RCT) studies including three different treatment options were extracted. The primary outcome was maximal voiding volume (MVV). We performed pairwise meta-analyses by random effects model and NMA by Bayesian model. We used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) framework to assess the quality of evidence contributing to each network estimate. Results: Six RCTs (462 patients) comparing three different interventions fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A low risk of bias was shown for the majority of the study items. The results of NMA showed that compared with antimuscarinic drugs, Parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was associated with significant improvement in the MVV (mean difference [MD] = 58.50, 95% confidential interval [CI]: 45.95–69.52), followed by urotherapy group (MD = 21.03, 95% CI: 11.85–29.97). When it comes to the constipation, antimuscarinic drugs exerted significant benefit than PTENS (odds ratio [OR]: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.01–0.46). No significant difference was found between other treatments. Conclusion: Compared with antimuscarinic drugs, PTENS was associated with significant better efficacy considering MVV, but more constipation events in de novo OAB children. Antimuscarinic drugs showed remarkably better efficacy considering MVV and comparable safety profile compared with urotherapy. Clinicians should take all known safety and compliance of patients into account when choosing an optimal strategy. Abstract Background For localized prostate cancer (PCa), radical prostatectomy (RP) and radiotherapy (RT) are two standard interventions to decrease PCa mortality. Contemporary studies contained the elderly people; analyses focusing on patients over 75 years of age were still lacking. Method In the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database (2004‐2015), people over 75 years of age with cT2 stage were selected in our research. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze cancer‐specific mortality (CSM) and overall mortality (OM) after adjustment. The propensity score matching was performed to assume the randomization. An instrument variate (IVA) was used to calculate the unmeasured confounders. Abstract Background Packing materials is a critical design consideration when employing biological reactor to treat malodorous gases. The acidification of packing bed usually results in a significant drop in the removal efficiency. In the present study, a biotrickling filter (BTF2) packed with plastic balls in the upper layer and with lava rocks in the bottom layer, was proposed to mitigate the acidification. Results Results showed that using combined packing materials efficiently enhanced the removal performance of BTF2 when compared with BTF1, which was packed with sole lava rocks. Removal efficiencies of more than 92.5% on four sulfur compounds were achieved in BTF2. Average pH value in its bottom packing bed was about 4.86, significantly higher than that in BTF1 (2.85). Sulfate and elemental sulfur were observed to accumulate more in BTF1 than in BTF2. Analysis of principal coordinate analysis proved that structure of microbial communities in BTF2 changed less after the shutdown but more when the initial pH value was set at 5.5. Network analysis of significant co-occurrence patterns based on the correlations between microbial taxa revealed that BTF2 harbored more diverse microorganisms involving in the bio-oxidation of sulfur compounds and had more complex interactions between microbial species. Conclusions Results confirmed that using combined packing materials effectively improved conditions for the growth of microorganisms. The robustness of reactor against acidification, adverse temperature and gas supply shutdown was greatly enhanced. These provided a theoretical basis for using mixed packing materials to improve removal performance.

Abstract Two biotrickling filters were operated in continuous (BTF1) and discontinuous (BTF2) modes at a constant empty bed residence time of 60 s for 60 days. From day 60, the operation mode of each BTF was oppositely switched. Higher removal efficiencies of five aromatic pollutants were recorded with BTF1 (> 77.2%). The switch in the operation mode did not alter the removal performance of BTF1. Comparatively, BTF2 was not successfully acclimated in the discontinuous operation mode. Once the mode had been switched to continuous mode, the removal efficiencies of BTF2 on all pollutants increased drastically and finally exceeded the values observed in BTF1, with the single exception of p-xylene. Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of 68Ga-PSMA positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) for preoperative lymph node staging using histopathological results of pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) as reference standard in patients with intermediate/high risk of prostate cancer.Material and Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was completed up to May 2020. We included studies investigating accuracy of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT in primary lymph node staging before radical prostatectomy and PLND. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve with an area under the curve (AUC) were synthesized.Results: Eleven studies comprising 904 patients were identified. Based on per-patient analysis, the pooled sensitivity and specificity reached 0.63 (95% CI: 0.46–0.78) and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88–0.96), respectively, with the DOR of 22 (95% CI: 10–47). An overall accuracy was revealed by the SROC curve with AUC of 0.91 (95% CI: 0.88–0.93). Using the lymph node as unit, the pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.70 (95% CI: 0.49–0.85) and 0.99 (95% CI: 0.96–1.00), respectively. And the DOR reached 167 (95% CI: 40–695) with an AUC of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.94–0.98). The pooled PPV and NPV all reached above 0.8 on basis of per-patient or per-node analysis.Conclusions:68Ga-PSMA PET/CT represented as a promising test for preoperative lymph node staging and patients without lymph node metastatic status can rarely be misdiagnosed. However, its sensitivity ought to be improved before forgoing PLND.

Abstract Background In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theories, the typical clinical manifestations of gout are attributed to the “dampness-heat pouring downward.” Therefore, TCM practitioners always consider prescribing the formulae which are believed to clear heat and drain dampness for the management of gout. This clinical trial aims: (1) to determine the hypouricemic effect of “Yellow-dragon Wonderful-seed Formula” (YWF) decoction in gout patients with dampness-heat pouring downward pattern and (2) to determine if gypsum could provide additional significant benefits to YWF. Methods A total of 72 hyperuricemic individuals with gout and dampness-heat pouring downward pattern were included with 62 of them completing the trial. Participants were randomly assigned to the YWF group, the YWF + gypsum group, or the allopurinol group. YWF and YWF + gypsum decoctions were orally administered for four weeks. Allopurinol was also orally administered for four weeks as the active control. Serum uric acid (sUA) level was the primary outcome measure. Urine urate level, scores on the SF-36 scale, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), X ray film, and C reactive protein (CRP) level were the secondary outcome measures. Results Compared with the values at week 0, YWF and YWF + gypsum did not significantly decrease the sUA level at each weekend reading. YWF, YWF + gypsum, and allopurinol decreased the urine urate levels and there were significant differences between the YWF group and the YWF + gypsum group. All the changes in the eight structures of SF-36 during the intervention period were not significantly different among the three groups and there was no significant difference in the CRP level among the three groups at each weekend reading. Conclusions YWM, which modified on the basis of Two Wonderful Herbs Powder (2WHP), does not show significant hypouricemic effect. There is a possibility that Gypsum Fibrosum may provide additional effects to YWF in decreasing the urine urate levels but cannot add benefits to YWF in other outcome measures. Although biotrickling filters (BTFs) applied under acidic condition to remove H2S from waste gases have been reported, the removal behavior of the acidic BTF under transient condition which was normal in most industry processes, and corresponding bacterial community have not been thoroughly studied. In the present study, two BTFs were run under neutral (BTFn) and acidic (BTFa) conditions, respectively. The results revealed that the removal performance of BTFa under transient condition was superior to that of BTFn; the maximum H2S eliminating capacities (ECs) achieved by BTFa and BTFn were 489.9 g/m3 h and 443.6 g/m3 h, respectively. High-throughput sequencing suggested that pH was the critical factor and several other factors including nutrient and the inlet loadings also had roles in shaping bacterial community structure. Acidithiobacillus was the most abundant bacterial group. The results indicated that BTF acclimation under acidic condition may facilitate generating microbial community with high H2S-degrading capability.

We included 439 patients who had mpMRI and PBx between August 2018 and July 2021 (West China Hospital, Chengdu, China). To detect clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) on PBx, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves and their respective area under the curve were calculated. Based on %fPSA, PSAD, and Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) scores, the negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV) were calculated sequentially. The optimal %fPSA threshold was determined to be 0.16, and the optimal PSAD threshold was 0.12 for %fPSA ≥0.16 and 0.23 for %fPSA <0.16, respectively. When PSAD <0.12 was combined with patients with %fPSA ≥0.16, the NPV of csPCa increased from 0.832 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.766-0.887) to 0.931 (95% CI: 0.833-0.981); the detection rate of csPCa was similar when further stratified by PI-RADS scores (P = 0.552). Combining %fPSA <0.16 with PSAD ≥0.23 ng ml-2 predicted significantly more csPCa patients than those with PSAD <0.23 ng ml-2 (58.4% vs 26.7%, P < 0.001). Using PI-RADS scores 4 and 5, the PPV was 0.739 (95% CI: 0.634-0.827) when further stratified by mpMRI results. In biopsy-naïve patients with PSA level of 4-10 ng ml-1, stratification of %fPSA and PSAD combined with PI-RADS scores may be useful in the decision-making process prior to undergoing PBx. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is widely used for primary health care worldwide as it mostly consists of herbs or herbal extracts known to be safe. However, owing to the intentional or unintentional addition to herbs of lead-containing bases or pastes, lead poisoning from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) remains a serious issue. We report here a case of lead poisoning caused by long-term use of homemade TCM. A 66-year-old man was admitted for periumbilical pain and constipation. A detailed medication history revealed that the patient had been using homemade TCM for the past 8 months. Screening for heavy metals showed that the patient had a blood lead level of 657 μ g/L and his wife, who was asymptomatic, had a blood lead level of 488 μ g/L. Chemical analysis confirmed a lead concentration of more than 4,000 mg/kg in the TCM. Both individuals were advised to discontinue the medications and chelation treatment was immediately initiated for the husband. The patient's periumbilical pain was noticeably relieved after treatment, and blood lead levels returned to normal after three treatment rounds. We also review here the literature to summarize the usual reasons for taking TCM and common features of lead poisoning. Our findings suggest that potential exposure to lead from TCM treatment must be considered when diagnosing unexplained cases of abdominal colic in China. The Fered-Fenton process using Ti sheet as cathode and RuO2/Ti as anode was employed for the pretreatment of dry-spun acrylic fiber manufacturing wastewater. The effects of feeding mode and concentration of H2O2 on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency as well as the biodegradability variation during the Fered-Fenton process were investigated. The feeding mode of H2O2 had significant influence on COD removal efficiency: the removal efficiency was 44.8% if all the 60.0 mM H2O2 was fed at once, while it could reach 54.1% if the total H2O2 was divided into six portions and fed six times. The biochemical oxygen demand/COD ratio increased from 0.29 to above 0.68 after 180 min treatment. The transformation characteristics of organic pollutants during the Fered-Fenton process were evaluated by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy. Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the major complication of diabetes; proteinuria is the hall mark of DN. Currently, the treatment for proteinuria is mainly limited to angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, Chinese medicinals 'securing essence and tonifying the kidney' may be appropriate for proteinuria. The most promising Chinese medicinals and formulae are introduced in the present study to form a potent formula for DN proteinuria. To make oral administration convenient, the formula will be processed in the form of granules. Methods/design: A randomized, multi-center pilot trial will be conducted. Forty eight participants with DN will be randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: 1. A granule group, at 10 grams, three times daily (G10 group, n = 12); 2. A granule group, at 20 grams, three times daily (G20 group, n = 12); 3. A decoction group (D group, n = 12); and 4. An irbesartan group (Aprovel group, n = 12). The following outcome measures will be used: the percentage change of the albumin-to-creatinine ratio; and the changes in serum creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobulin from baseline to the end of the trial. Discussion: It is notable that most published clinical trials which assessed the efficacy of TCM on DN were of poor methodology and, therefore, their results have been invalidated. It is necessary to carry out well-designed clinical trials to provide sound evidence. Background. "Fructus Mume or Dark Plum" (pilule form) has been used for many years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and may be a valid treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Aim. One aspect toward efficacy validation is the evaluation of the blood glucose-lowering effect of Fructus Mume (FM) with T2DM patients in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Methods. This pilot study uses a RCT procedure to assess efficacy of FM and Metformin. The trial was for 12 weeks, with 80 T2DM subjects. Both groups were standardized in their diet and exercise routine. Comparisons of several variables were analyzed. Results. No significant differences were found between groups in the fasting and postprandial glucose levels although both had significant decreases. The values of glycosylated hemoglobin were significantly reduced in both groups. For patients whose body mass index (BMI) was <23, neither FM nor Metformin had an effect on BMI; for those with a BMI between 23 and 25 or the BMI was >25, both FM and Metformin significantly reduce the BMI. Conclusions. In this pilot study, it was demonstrated that Fructus Mume formula may reduce the levels of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) by performing a meta-analysis. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs comparing CHM vs no treatment, placebo, conventional western medicine (CWM), or general non-specific surgical treatment for DUB were identified by electronic and manual searches. Trials of CHM treatments with CWM treatments were compared with CWM treatments alone. Jadad scale and allocation concealment were used to assess the quality of included studies. Four RCTs or quasi-RCTs involving 525 patients were included. The methodological quality was poor in all trials except one trial. No serious adverse events were reported in the included studies. With the lack of trials comparing CHM with no treatment or placebo, it is impossible to accurately evaluate the efficacy of CHM. However, CHM in these studies seem to show an encouraging comparative effectiveness with CWM. More RCTs with a higher quality are required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this review is to critically examine the clinical trial research on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an intervention in treating heroin addiction in People's Republic of China. This review examines Chinese-language-only publications for the patent medicines: Shenfu Tuodu, Fukang Pian, and Shifu Sheng. Other compound medicines will be reviewed in future publications. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in Western and Chinese databases. Most trials were excluded because they did not declare randomization and had poor methodology or reporting. The majority of clinical evidence in the random controlled trials demonstrates good evidence for TCM patent medicines in heroin addiction treatment. When compared to typical Western medications, TCMs demonstrate fewer side-effects, in addition to equal measures of treatment efficacy and safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spent mushroom compost of Lentinus edodes was used as a biosorbent for adsorbing cadmium, lead and chromium from solutions under batch conditions for the first time. Titration of the biomass revealed that it contained at least three types of functional groups. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry showed that the carboxyl, phosphoryl, phenolic groups were the main groups. The simulated values of PK_H and molar quantity were 5.00 and 0.44 mmol/g, 7.32 and 1.38 mmol/g, 10.45 and 1.44 mmol/g, respectively. The biosorption ability increased with pH in acid condition. When 10 mg/L biomass dosage was added in, there was no significant increment of metal uptake. The maximum uptake estimated with the Langmiur isotherm model were 833.33 mg/g for Cd (II), 1000.00 mg/g for Pb (II) and 44.44 mg/g for Cr (III), respectively. Transmembrane proteins have exhibited a significant correlation with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The current study elucidates the roles of transmembrane protein 150A (TMEM150A) in GBM. Data on patients with GBM were collected from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Xena databases. The objective was to identify the expression levels of TMEM150A in patients with GBM, and evaluate its diagnostic and prognostic values, accomplished using the receiver operating characteristic and survival analyses. On a cellular level, Cell Counting Kit-8, Wound healing, and Transwell experiments were performed to gauge the impact of TMEM150A on cell growth and migration. The study further investigated the correlation between TMEM150A expression and immune status, along with ribonucleic acid (RNA) modifications in GBM. The findings demonstrated TMEM150A overexpression in the cancerous tissues of patients with GBM, with an area under the curve value of 0.95. TMEM150A overexpression was significantly correlated with poor prognostic indicators. TMEM150A overexpression and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation status were predictive of poor survival time among patients with GBM. In vitro experiments indicated that suppressing TMEM150A expression could inhibit GBM cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Moreover, TMEM150A overexpression was associated with stromal, immune, and estimate scores, immune cells (such as the T helper (Th) 17 cells, Th2 cells, and regulatory T cells), cell markers, and RNA modifications. Therefore, TMEM150A overexpression might serve as a promising biomarker for predicting poor prognosis in patients with GBM. Inhibiting TMEM150A expression holds the potential for improving the survival time of patients with GBM.

Background/Aims: Due to the lack of specific markers, the isolation of pure mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from murine bone marrow remains an unsolved problem. The present study explored whether the neural ganglioside GD2 could serve as a single surface marker to uniquely distinguish murine bone marrow MSCs (mBM-MSCs) from other marrow elements. Methods: Immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry, in combination with quantitative RT-PCR, were used to identify the expression of GD2 on culture-expanded mBM-MSCs. GD2+ and GD2- fractions from mBM-MSCs cultures were sorted by immunosorting. Flow cytometry was performed to further analyze the biomarkers of GD2-sorted and unsorted cells. Employing CFU-F assay and CCK-8 assay, we examined the clonogenic and proliferative capabilities of GD2-sorted and unsorted cells. Using oil red O and von Kossa staining assay, we also assessed the multi-lineage potential of GD2-sortedand unsorted cells. Results: We found that mBM-MSCs expressed a novel surface marker the neural ganglioside GD2. Importantly, mBM-MSCs were the only cells within bone marrow that expressed this marker. Further studies demonstrated that a homogenous population of MSCs could be obtained from bone marrow cultures in early passages by GD2 immunosorting. Compared to parental cells, GD2+-sorted cells not only possessed much higher clonogenic and proliferative capabilities but also had significantly stronger differentiation potential to adipocytes and osteoblasts. Furthermore, GD2+-sorted cells displayed enhanced expression of ES markers SSEA-1 and Nanog. Conclusion: Our observations provide the first demonstration that GD2 may serve as a maker for identification and purification of mBM-MSCs. Meanwhile, our study indicates that the cells selected by GD2 are a subpopulation of MSCs with features of primitive precursor cells.
