Abstract Background Controlling excess biomass accumulation and clogging is important for maintaining the performance of gas biofilters and reducing energy consumption. Interruption of bacterial communication (quorum quenching) can modulate gene expression and alter biofilm properties. However, whether the problem of excess biomass accumulation in gas biofilters can be addressed by interrupting bacterial communication remains unknown. Results In this study, parallel laboratory-scale gas biofilters were operated with Rhodococcus sp. BH4 (QQBF) and without Rhodococcus sp. BH4 (BF) to explore the effects of quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria on biomass accumulation and clogging. QQBF showed lower biomass accumulation (109 kg/m3) and superior operational stability (85–96%) than BF (170 kg/m3; 63–92%) at the end of the operation. Compared to BF, the QQBF biofilm had lower adhesion strength and decreased extracellular polymeric substance production, leading to easier detachment of biomass from filler surface into the leachate. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of quorum sensing (QS)-related species was found to decrease from 67 (BF) to 56% (QQBF). The QS function genes were also found a lower relative abundance in QQBF, compared with BF. Moreover, although both biofilters presented aromatic compounds removal performance, the keystone species in QQBF played an important role in maintaining biofilm stability, while the keystone species in BF exhibited great potential for biofilm formation. Finally, the possible influencing mechanism of Rhodococcus sp. BH4 on biofilm adhesion was demonstrated. Overall, the results of this study achieved excess biomass control while maintaining stable biofiltration performance (without interrupting operation) and greatly promoted the use of QQ technology in bioreactors. Abstract Background The current surveillance system only focuses on notifiable infectious diseases in China. The arrival of the big-data era provides us a chance to elaborate on the full spectrum of infectious diseases. Methods In this population-based observational study, we used multiple health-related data extracted from the Shandong Multi-Center Healthcare Big Data Platform from January 2013 to June 2017 to estimate the incidence density and describe the epidemiological characteristics and dynamics of various infectious diseases in a population of 3,987,573 individuals in Shandong province, China. Results In total, 106,289 cases of 130 infectious diseases were diagnosed among the population, with an incidence density (ID) of 694.86 per 100,000 person-years. Besides 73,801 cases of 35 notifiable infectious diseases, 32,488 cases of 95 non-notifiable infectious diseases were identified. The complete plastid genome of Scutellaria microviolacea C. Y. Wu was firstly reported. The full length of the plastid genome was 152,092 bp and comprised of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 84,090 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,534 bp, and two inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 25,234 bp. A total of 131 genes were encoded, including 87 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the S. microviolacea plastid genome was 38.3%. Further phylogenetic analysis based on 18 accessions inferred that the genus Scutellaria can be divided into two clades, and S. microviolacea is evolutionarily close to Scutellaria tsinyunensis. Our study provided essential genetic resources for further studies on the evolution and genetic diversity of the genus Scutellaria and its related taxa.

Aletris megalantha F. T. Wang & Tang is an herbal plant species endemic to Yunnan Province of China. Its complete plastid genome sequence was 154,704 bp in length, with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 83,265 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,127 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,656 bp. The whole plastid genome encoded 132 genes, including 85 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The overall GC content of A. megalantha plastid genome was 37.4%. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on 14 taxa indicated that A. megalantha is evolutionarily close to A. spicata.

The P2X7 inhibitor, brilliant blue G (BBG), has been reported as a neuroprotective drug against a variety of disorders, including neuropathic pain and brain ischemia. Currently, no studies have examined the potential for BBG to provide neuroprotection in animal models of TBI. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neuroprotective effect of BBG on TBI and to determine the underlying mechanisms. The rats were subjected to a diffuse cortical impact injury caused by a modified weight-drop device, and then divided randomly into three groups: the sham-operated, BBG treatment and vehicle groups. In the BBG treatment group, 50 mg/kg brilliant blue G (BBG; 100% pure), a highly specific and clinically useful P2X7 antagonist, was administered via the tail vein 15 min prior to or up to 8 h following TBI. The co-localization of NeuN and protein kinase Cγ (PKCγ) was followed with immunofluorescent staining. The expression of P2X7, PKCγ and inflammatory cytokines was identified by western blot analysis. Wet-dry weight method was used to evaluate brain edema, and motor function outcome was examined using the neurological severity score. The present study demonstrated that the administration of BBG attenuated TBI-induced cerebral edema and the associated motor deficits. Following trauma, BBG treatment significantly reduced the levels of PKCγ and interleukin-1β in the cortex. The results provide in vivo evidence that BBG exerted neuroprotective effects by attenuating brain edema and improving neurological functions via reducing PKCγ and interleukin-1β levels following TBI. The antimalarial drug, chloroquine (CQ), has been reported as an autophagy inhibitor in a variety of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and brain ischemia. To the best of our knowledge, no studies to date have examined the potential for CQ to provide neuroprotection in animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective actions of CQ in TBI and to determine the mechanisms underlying this effect. Rats were immediately subjected to a diffuse cortical impact injury caused by a modified weight-drop device and divided randomly into three groups: sham-operated, CQ treatment and vehicle. The CQ treatment group was administered CQ (intraperitoneally, 3 mg/kg body weight) immediately following the induction of injury. The co-localization of neuron-specific nuclear protein (NeuN) and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), was followed by immunofluorescent staining. The expression of LC3 and inflammatory cytokines was identified by western blot analysis. Wet-dry weight method was utilized to evaluate TBI-induced brain edema. Motor function was evaluated using the Neurological Severity Score (NSS) scale and the Morris water maze was employed to assess spatial learning ability. This study demonstrated that the administration of CQ attenuates TBI-induced cerebral edema, and the associated motor and cognitive functional deficits that occur post-injury. Following the induction of cerebral trauma, CQ treatment significantly suppressed neuronal autophagy and reduced expression levels of the inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), in the rat hippocampus. Our results have provided in vivo evidence that CQ may exert neuroprotective effects following TBI, in attenuating brain edema and improving neurological functioning, by reducing the damaging consequences of neuronal autophagy and cerebral inflammation. Gap junctions are conductive channels formed by membrane proteins termed connexins, which permit the intercellular exchange of metabolites, ions and small molecules. Previous data demonstrated that traumatic brain injury (TBI) activates autophagy and increases microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) immunostaining predominantly in neurons. Although previous studies have identified several extracellular factors that modulate LC3 expression, knowledge of the regulatory network controlling LC3 in health and disease remains incomplete. The aim of the present study was to assess whether gap junctions control the in vivo expression of LC3 in TBI. Using a modified weight-drop device, adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (weight, 350-375 g) were subjected to TBI. Phosphorylated gap junction protein levels and LC3-II levels were quantified using western blot analysis. The spatial distribution of immunoreactivity for phosphorylated connexin 43 (p-CX43) and LC3-II was analyzed by immunofluorescence. The results showed that p-CX43 expression in the hippocampus reached a maximum level 6 h following injury. In addition, the immunoreactivity of p-CX43 was localized in the astrocytes surrounding pyramidal neurons. The LC3-II protein content remained at high levels 24 h following injury. Double immunolabeling demonstrated that LC3-II dots colocalized with the hippocampus pyramidal neurons. Furthermore, inhibition of p-CX43 reduced TBI-induced autophagy, according to western blot analysis. As astrocytic gap junction coupling is affected in various forms of brain injury, the results suggest that point gap junctions/connexins are important regulators of autophagy in the hippocampal neurons following TBI. Probing signal waveforms play a central role in the signal processing performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In practice, for a given desired beam pattern, we need to design a probing signal waveform whose beam pattern closely matches the desired one and whose autocorrelation and cross-correlation sidelobes are kept low. The latter properties are important to mitigate undesirable interference caused by multiple targets or scatterers. In this correspondence, we present an efficient optimization method to design a constant modulus probing signal which can synthesize a desired beam pattern while maximally suppressing both the autocorrelation and cross-correlation sidelobes at/between given spacial angles. We formulate this problem as an unconstrained minimization of a fourth order trigonometric polynomial and propose an efficient quasi-Newton iterative algorithm to solve it. Besides, we provide an analysis of the local minima of the fourth-order trigonometric polynomial and prove that any local minima is a 1/2-approximation of its global optimal solution.
