Abstract

Controlling nanostructures and crystallographic orientations in epitaxial nanocomposite thin films are important for tuning their physical properties. Here, we present epitaxial nanocomposite thin films of (110) oriented CoFe2O4 (CFO) and (1110) oriented Bi5Ti3FeO15 (BTFO15) grown on SrTiO3 (110) substrates with a vertically aligned pillar–matrix type structure. The size and density of CFO pillars embedded in the BTFO matrix were controlled by the growth temperature and CFO concentration. Moreover, BTFO takes intergrowth phases with the general formula of Bi4Ti3O12 • nBiFeO3 (n = 1–∼1.5) depending on the growth temperature. Scanning probe analysis on the ferroelectric properties of BTFO15–CFO nanocomposite thin films suggested that the BTFO has a switchable out-of-plane polarization component originating from the tilted orientation of its a–b plane polarization. For high CFO pillar density, however, a non-negligible number of conductive paths which might be formed at the pillar–matrix interface are likely to prevent the polarization reversal. This is an open access article under the CC BY license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ ), For the first time, the dielectric response of a BaTiO thin film under an AC electric field is investigated using microsecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti K-edge in order to clarify correlated contributions of each constituent atom on the electronic states. Intensities of the pre-edge peak and shoulder structure just below the main edge increase with an increase in the amplitude of the applied electric field, whereas that of the main peak decreases in an opposite manner. Based on the multiple scattering theory, the increase and decrease of the and main peaks are simulated for different Ti off-center displacements. Our results indicate that these spectral features reflect the inter- and intra-atomic hybridization of Ti 3 with O 2 and Ti 4 respectively. In contrast, the shoulder structure is not affected by changes in the Ti off-center displacement but is susceptible to the effect of the corner site Ba ions. 19. Exotic nuclei with charm and bottom flavor

Abstract

We discuss the possibility of existence of exotic nuclei containing charm and bottom mesons. We study the interaction between $ar{D}$ (B) mesons and nucleons from view of heavy quark symmetry, and derive the one pion exchange potentials. We apply these potentials to the two body system of $ar{D}$ (B) meson and nucleon N , and find there are possible stable bound states with spin JP = 1/2− and isospin I = 0. We find that the tensor interaction mixing $ar{D}$N and $ar{D}$*N (BN and B*N) plays an important role. We also qualitatively discuss the possible bound states of $ar{D}$ (B) meson and two nucleons.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients. Recurrences are common after antibiotic therapy. Actoxumab and bezlotoxumab are human monoclonal antibodies against C. difficile toxins A and B, respectively.METHODS: We conducted two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trials, MODIFY I and MODIFY II, involving 2655 adults receiving oral standard-of-care antibiotics for primary or recurrent C. difficile infection. Participants received an infusion of bezlotoxumab (10 mg per kilogram of body weight), actoxumab plus bezlotoxumab (10 mg per kilogram each), or placebo; actoxumab alone (10 mg per kilogram) was given in MODIFY I but discontinued after a planned interim analysis. The primary end point was recurrent infection (new episode after initial clinical cure) within 12 weeks after infusion in the modified intention-to-treat population.RESULTS: In both trials, the rate of recurrent C. difficile infection was significantly lower with bezlotoxumab alone than with placebo (MODIFY I: 17% [67 of 386] vs. 28% [109 of 395]; adjusted difference, -10.1 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -15.9 to -4.3; PCONCLUSIONS: Among participants receiving antibiotic treatment for primary or recurrent C. difficile infection, bezlotoxumab was associated with a substantially lower rate of recurrent infection than placebo and had a safety profile similar to that of placebo. Abstract

The $\Lambda^{\ast}$-hypernuclei, which are bound states of $\Lambda(1405)$ and nuclei, are discussed as a possible interpretation of the $\bar{K}$-nuclei. The Bonn and Nijmegen potentials are extended and used as a phenomenological potential between $\Lambda^{\ast}$ and $N$. The $K$-exchange potential is also considered in the $\Lambda^{\ast}$ and $N$ interaction. The two-body ($\Lambda^{\ast}N$) and three-body ($\Lambda^{\ast}NN$) systems are solved by a variational method. It is shown that the spin and isospin of the ground states are assigned as $\Lambda^{\ast}N(S=1, I=1/2)$ and $\Lambda^{\ast}NN(S=3/2, I=0)$, respectively. The binding energies of the $\Lambda^{\ast}$-hypernuclei are discussed in comparison with experiment.

Abstract

Epitaxial LiCoO 2 (LCO) thin films of different orientations were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in order to model single-crystal behavior of intercalation cathodes during electrochemical reactions. This paper demonstrates that (1) epitaxial growth of LCO on a single crystal Nb-doped SrTiO 3 (Nb:STO) of different orientations occurs with a single orientation relationship; (2) surface morphology of the LCO films is established by the morphology of coalescing grains during island growth mode, whereas morphology of the grains can be visualized as different cuts from a cube with low-energy {104} R-LCO surfaces; (3) the films consist of predominately trigonal R-LiCoO 2 phase, with a small fraction of the occasionally present cubic c-Li x CoO 2 phase; (4) cyclic voltammetry measurements have determined rectification at interface between LCO and Nb:STO causing bias on the oxidation part of cycling, thus preventing full cycling. 39. Eye movements during afterimage tracking under sinusoidal and random vestibular stimulation

Abstract

The smooth portion of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex was analyzed in terms of the frequency response, relating slow-phase eye velocity to angular velocity of a rotating chair under four different cases: sinusoidal rotation about a vertical axis in total darkness, sinusoidal rotation during afterimage tracking, pseudorandom head rotation in total darkness, and pseudorandom head rotation during afterimage tracking. Eye movements were recorded using a photoelectric limbus tracking method. The observation that the presence of an afterimage during vestibular stimulation increases the velocity of slow-phase eye movements is in support of the theory that such slow-phase movements are generated, at least in part, by the perceived velocity of the target. Since the target is immobilized on the retina, this perceived velocity is clearly not generated by retinal slip, but rather by a mechanism related to the eye movement such as corollary discharge.

Abstract

Human eye tracking of a foveal afterimage during angular head oscillation in the dark produced smooth eye movements exceeding those for normal vestibular nystagmus, and a reduction in the frequency of the fast phase component of nystagmus eye movements. These results may support a closed loop extension of the corollary discharge theory, with oculomotor commands based on perceived object velocity.

Abstract

A computer graphics method for the generation of horizontally moving vertical stripes which serve as stimuli for optokinetic nystagmus is presented. The pattern is generated by the successive addition of a constant in a digital register, leading to its periodic overflow. Digital to analog conversion of the register contents results in a staircase waveform, which is converted into a pattern of vertical lines on a CRT. The addition of any number to the reference buffer shifts all lines uniformly, so that the group velocity of the pattern is easily controlled. The computer controlled display allows an accurate realization of a commanded velocity profile with practically no time delay and facilitates study under conditions of variable feedback. The display software can be easily modified to limit stimulation to a selected area of the moving retina, and the method has been used to simulate central scotomata. It is pointed out that the technique, while more accurate, versatile and responsive than a rotating drum device, may be less useful in experiments requiring a wide field display.

Abstract

We discuss new exotic nuclei which contain D and B mesons. As simplest systems, we consider D (B) bound systems with one nucleon and two nucleons. With respecting to the heavy quark symmetry, we derive the one pion exchange potential as a long range force as an interaction between D (B) meson and nucleon. We solve the Schrödinger equation with coupled channels, and investigate the DN (BN) bound states. We further discuss the possibility of existence of DNN (BNN). Abstract

We developed an in-situ measurement system for characterizing the relationship between ferroelectricity and lattice distortion of a ferroelectric thin film at BL13XU, SPring-8. The dielectric polarization obtained and the lattice strain evaluated provide us with the electrostrictive coefficient of the film. The system for the method consists of a refractive lens for two dimensional micron focusing, ferroelectric characterization system, high-precision four-circle diffractometer, and time-resolved photon counting system. It enables in-situ measurements of the electric polarization of the film and an electric-field-induced strain using nano-second order time-resolved synchrotron diffraction. We applied the method to determining the lattice constant distorted by the electric field and the polarization value of a 410 nm-thick BiFeO3 thin film. The piezoelectric constant d33 evaluated was about 28 pm/V. The polarization observed allowed us to evaluate an electrostrictive coefficient Q of 1·4×10-2 m4/C2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A long history on the polarized 3He ion source developed at RCNP is presented. We started with an “OPPIS” (Optical Pumping Polarized Ion Source) and later found the fundamental difficulties in the OPPIS. To overcome them an “EPPIS” (Electron Pumping Polarized Ion Source) was proposed and its validity was experimentally proven. However, a serious technical disadvantage was also found in the EPPIS. To avoid this disadvantage we proposed a new concept, “SEPIS” (Spin Exchange Polarized Ion Source), which uses an enhanced spin-exchange cross section theoretically expected at low 3He+ incident energies in the 3He+ + Rb system. Next, we describe the present status of the SEPIS development: construction of a bench test device allowing the measurements of not only the spin-exchange cross sections σse but also the electron capture cross sections σec for the 3He+ + Rb system. The latest experimental data on σec are presented and compared with other previous experimental data and the theoretical calculations.
