22. DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTION STRATEGIES FOR MONUMENTAL AND VETERAN PLANE TREES IN ISTANBUL.

- Abstract
Trees that we see every day stay firm in the same place for several years. They are the symbol of nature and one of the most important living beings which are a bridge between the past, the present and the future. According to Andres [1], the monumental trees differ from others of their species regarding their unusual size, their age, or their unusual shape, which means that they are of special natural, historical, cultural, or scenic interest. Characteristics such as their height, trunk diameter, crown shape, or their having witnessed historical events or appearing in myths and legends make these trees of public interest and therefore protected by law. The veteran trees are also different from other trees with their ages, unusual size, unusual shape etc. They can be seen as a candidate for monumental trees. Istanbul, the biggest metropolitan city of Turkey, is particularly rich in monumental and veteran trees. In the study of IMM, the monumental trees and veteran trees of Istanbul city have been identificated and their locations have been stated. According to this study the monumental and veteran plane trees in the urban areas of the city are of special interest while they are of scenic value (throughout the history?!) but also have unwanted features like being nontolerant to arid conditions and also to various diseases [2]. Firstly, in this study the spatial distributions of the two monumental and veteran plane species (Platanus acerifolia, Platanus orientalis) in Istanbul have been revealed. Secondly, these 2518 taxa have been evaluated by the permeability of their existing place, in order to improve protection strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Obesity is the main obstacle for metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Turkey has the highest prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Europe. The effect of obesity on the metabolic control, and the macro-and microvascular complications of patients are not apparent. Objectives: This nationwide survey aimed to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among patients with type 2 diabetes and to search for the impact of obesity on the metabolic control of these patients. We also investigated the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: We consecutively enrolled patients who were under follow-up for at least 1 year in 69 tertiary healthcare units in 37 cities. The demographic, anthropometric, and clinical data including medications were recorded. Patients were excluded if they were pregnant, younger than 18 years, had decompensated liver disease, psychiatric disorders interfering with cognition or compliance, had bariatric surgery, or were undergoing renal replacement therapy. Results: Only 10% of patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 4,648) had normal body mass indexes (BMI), while the others were affected by overweight (31%) or obesity (59%). Women had a significantly higher prevalence of obesity (53.4 vs. 40%) and severe obesity (16.6 vs. 3.3%). Significant associations were present between high BMI levels and lower education levels, intake of insulin, antihypertensives and statins, poor metabolic control, or the presence of microvascular complications. Age, gender, level of education, smoking, and physical inactivity were the independent associates of obesity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The TEMD Obesity Study shows that obesity is a major determinant of the poor metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. These results underline the importance of prevention and management of obesity to improve health care in patients with type 2 diabetes. Also, the results point out the independent sociodemographic and clinical associates of obesity, which should be the prior targets to overcome, in the national fight with obesity. BACKGROUND: In a randomized, controlled trial that compared liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk who were receiving usual care, we found that liraglutide resulted in lower risks of the primary end point (nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) and death. However, the long-term effects of liraglutide on renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We report the prespecified secondary renal outcomes of that randomized, controlled trial in which patients were assigned to receive liraglutide or placebo. The secondary renal outcome was a composite of new-onset persistent macroalbuminuria, persistent doubling of the serum creatinine level, end-stage renal disease, or death due to renal disease. The risk of renal outcomes was determined with the use of time-to-event analyses with an intention-to-treat approach. Changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria were also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 9340 patients underwent randomization, and the median follow-up of the patients was 3.84 years. The renal outcome occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (268 of 4668 patients vs. 337 of 4672; hazard ratio, 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67 to 0.92; P=0.003). This result was driven primarily by the new onset of persistent macroalbuminuria, which occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (161 vs. 215 patients; hazard ratio, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.91; P=0.004). The rates of renal adverse events were similar in the liraglutide group and the placebo group (15.1 events and 16.5 events per 1000 patient-years), including the rate of acute kidney injury (7.1 and 6.2 events per 1000 patient-years, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This prespecified secondary analysis shows that, when added to usual care, liraglutide resulted in lower rates of the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease than placebo. Aims: Turkey has the highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe. It is therefore essential to know the overall cardiovascular risk and reveal the predictors of metabolic control in Turkish adults with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A nationwide, multicenter survey consecutively enrolled patients who were under follow up for at least a year. Optimal control was defined as HbA1c < 7%, home arterial blood pressure (ABP) < 135/85 mmHg, or LDL-C < 100 mg/dL. Achieving all parameters indicated triple metabolic control. Results: HbA1c levels of patients (n = 5211) were 8.6 ± 1.9% (71 ± 22 mmol/mol) and 7.7 ± 1.7% (61 ± 19 mmol/mol), in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, respectively. Glycemic control was achieved in 15.3% and 40.2%, and triple metabolic control was achieved in 5.5% and 10.1%, respectively. Only 1.5% of patients met all the criteria of being non-obese, non-smoker, exercising, and under triple metabolic control. Low education level was a significant predictor of poor glycemic control in both groups. Conclusions: Few patients with Type 2, and even fewer with Type 1 diabetes have optimal metabolic control in Turkey. TEMD study will provide evidence-based information to policy makers to focus more on the quality and sustainability of diabetes care in order to reduce the national burden of the disease. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

International audience; In this study, we demonstrated the suitability of direct injection mass spectrometry headspace analysis for rapid non-invasive quality control of semi-finished dairy ingredients, such as skim milk powder (SMP), whole milk powder (WMP), whey powder (WP) and anhydrous milk fat (AMF), which are widely used as ingredients in the food industry. In this work, for the first time, we applied proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) with a time-of-flight (ToF) analyzer for the rapid and non-invasive analysis of volatile compounds in different samples of SMP, WMP, WP and AMF. We selected different dairy ingredients in various concrete situations (e.g. same producer and different expiration times, different producers and same days of storage, different producers) based on their sensory evaluation. PTR-ToF-MS allowed the separation and characterization of different samples based on the volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles. Statistically significant differences in VOC content were generally coherent with differences in sensory evaluation, particularly for SMP, WMP and WP. The good separation of SMP samples from WMP samples suggested the possible application of PTR-ToF-MS to detect possible cases of adulteration of dairy ingredients for the food industry. Our findings demonstrate the efficient and rapid differentiation of dairy ingredients on the basis of the released VOCs via PTR-ToF-MS analysis and suggest this method as a versatile tool (1) for the facilitation/optimization of the selection of dairy ingredients in the food industry and (2) and for the prompt innovation in the production of dairy ingredients

In this work, a new memristor-based low-pass filter topology is suggested. Memristor-based filters are nonlinear circuits and many of them cannot be solved analytically. To find an approximate analytical solution of the filter equations, MacLaurin series is used for the first time. Time and frequency domain behavior of the filter are obtained. Also, the frequency domain gain and total harmonic distortion characteristics of the filter are given. Results obtained by the small signal model have been compared with the dynamic model results. It is shown that the small signal model is able to predict the filter behavior very well.

40. Advance age and mild thyrotoxicosis are associated with nodular goiter in Graves Disease

- Abstract
Objective: The primary goal of this study is to evaluate predictors of nodular goiter in Graves Disease (GD). Materials and Methods: A total of 202 consecutive patients (mean age: 45; 145 female, 57 male) were enrolled. All patients were treated with antithyroid drugs as initial therapy. TSH, FT3, FT4, TRAb, ATPO, and ATG were measured. Radioactive iodine uptake and thyroid ultrasonography were performed, and thyroid volume and nodule diameter were assessed. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration was performed on thyroid nodules ≥ 8mm. Results: Diffuse goiter was detected in 51% of patients. Solitary nodules were detected in 16%, and multi-nodular disease in 33%. Mean nodule diameter was 8.82 mm. Nodular disease was slightly more common in women (p=0.063). Patients with nodular GD were older (p=0.004), had lower levels of FT3 (p=0.016) and TRAB (p=0.002) when compared with subjects with diffuse GD. Age (OR:6.867) was the independent variable predicting nodular GD. Conclusions: Increased prevalence of nodules was associated with advanced age and milder thyrotoxicosis. Apoptosis of thyroid follicular cells due to excess iodine might interfere with nodule formation, and lead to diffuse goiter in severe thyrotoxicosis. Because of increased rate if malignancy in GD, comprehensive evaluation of thyroid nodules of any size is mandatory.

In this study, the relations between conformation traits, herd life and milk yield in Holstein cows were investigated. The material of this study was formed by 247 head Holstein cows in Polatli State Farm and 47 head Holstein cows in Ankara University Agricultural Faculty Research Application Farm. In this study, seventeen linear type traits on a scale of 1 to 9, and 4 general traits on a scale of 65 to 100 were scored in a total of 294 head Holstein cows. Stature was measured by a measuring cane. The relations between traits were investigated by Spearman’s rho coefficient. The best regression equation estimating 305-day milk yield was determined by Stepwise Linear Regression Analysis. The mean values of 305 day milk yield in Ankara University Agricultural Faculty Research Application Farm and Polatli State Farm were ranged between 4862-6559 kg and 6908-7847 kg, respectively. The positive and significant correlations were found between conformation traits and 305-day milk yield in two farms. These correlations indicate that an increase in 305-day milk yield could be achieved through selection on any of the conformation traits. The mean Total score values of Holstein cows that were grown up in Ankara University Agricultural Faculty Research and Application Farm and Polatli State Farm were ranged between 76.1-76.7 and 77.2-78.0, respectively, and cows in both enterprises were classified as medium class. The positive and significant correlations between the final score and categorical type traits constituted showed that an improvement could be seen in the categorical type traits by selection on final score. Bu çalışmada, Siyah Alaca ineklerde dış yapı özellikleri, sürüde kalma süresi ve süt verimi arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın materyalini Ankara Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Araştırma Uygulama Çiftliği’nde yetiştirilen 47 baş ve Polatlı Tarım İşletmesi’nde yetiştirilen 247 baş olmak üzere toplam 294 baş Siyah Alaca inek oluşturmuştur. Çalışmada, toplam 294 baş Siyah Alaca inekte 17 doğrusal özellik 1-9 puanlık skalada ve 4 genel özellik ise 65-100 puanlık bir skalada puanlanmıştır. Sağrı yüksekliği ölçü bastonu ile ölçülmüştür. Özellikler ile süt verimi arasındaki ilişkilerin incelenmesinde Sperman’ın rho katsayısından yararlanılmıştır. 305 günlük süt verimini en iyi şekilde tahmine imkan verecek regresyon denklemini elde etmek için Aşamalı Doğrusal Regresyon Analizi (Stepwise Linear Regression Analysis) yaklaşımından yararlanılmıştır. Ankara Üniversitesi Araştırma Uygulama Çiftliği’nde 305 gün süt verimine ait ortalamalar 4862 ile 6559 kg, Polatlı Tarım İşletmesi’nde ise 6908 ile 7847 kg arasında değişmektedir. Her iki işletmede 305 günlük süt verimi ile bazı dış yapı özellikleri arasında pozitif ve önemli korelasyonlar tespit edilmiş olup bunlar; dış yapı özelliklerinden herhangi birine dayanan seleksiyonla süt veriminde de artış sağlanabileceğini gösterir. Ankara Üniversitesi Araştırma Uygulama Çiftliği ve Polatlı Tarım İşletmesi’nde yetiştirilen Siyah Alaca ineklere ait Toplam puan ortalamaları sırasıyla; 76.1-76.7 ile 77.2-78.0 arasında değişmekte olup, her iki işletmedeki hayvanlar da orta sınıfa girmektedir. Araştırma sonuçları, her iki işletmede de toplam dış yapı puanı ile bunu meydana getiren ana dış yapı özellikleri arasındaki pozitif ve önemli olan ilişkilerden dolayı, toplam dış yapıya göre yapılan seleksiyonla ana dış yapı özelliklerinde de iyileşme olabileceğini göstermektedir.

In 1971, Leon Chua theoretically postulated that the memristor is the fourth fundamental circuit element, besides the three well-known circuit elements; namely, resistor, capacitor and inductor. For a long time, because of lack of a simple and practical realization, memristor remained just a theoretical element and rarely appeared in the literature. In 2008, a research team from HP laboratories declared that they had found a physical implementation based on thin films, behaving as a memristor. Memristor can offer new opportunities in circuit design due to its nonlinear behavior and memory. Nevertheless, since a cheap and reliable practical implementation of memristor is yet unavailable on the market, the design of such a realization, which mimics memristor behavior, is vital from the point of view of real-world circuit design. In this paper, a new microcontroller-based memristive chaotic circuit is proposed. Presented design has been implemented using an Ardunio Mega board, which solves numerically the dynamics of the memristor-based chaotic system using Runge-Kutta method. It sends the chaotic signals to the outputs of the circuit, using digital-to-analog converters. Chaotic dynamics and the strange attractors are obtained from the circuit using both, the computer simulations and the lab experiments. Considering both simulation and experimental results, it is shown that the proposed circuit mimics well the dynamics of the memristive chaotic system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our environment is full of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation due to rapid progress of wireless communication technologies, which have many applications, such as base stations of mobile communication networks and wireless internet antennas. In the context of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) discipline, the word shield is used to describe any sort of metal sheet or material capable of reflecting, refracting or absorbing electromagnetic radiation (EMR), which is custom manufactured for the target electronic device casing, in a way to intervene any radiation passing to and from the device. Examining of electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) is an important part of not only ensuring electromagnetic compatibility and of protecting electrical and electronic equipment but also protection of human beings against electromagnetic energy exposure as well. In this study, after a brief introduction and review on electromagnetic shielding, material selection and their applications for an indoor environment protection against electromagnetic radiation are explained. Potential electromagnetic shielding values of fabrics found in the market have been analyzed and compared by considering various criteria and requirements. Experimental results show that around 20 dB shielding effectiveness values can be obtained using test fabrics for a typical indoor environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
