High-pressure sliding (HPS) and rotary swaging (RS) at room temperature were used to form severely deformed microstructures in martensitic creep-resistant P92 steel. The deformed microstructures contained markedly different ratios of low- and high-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs/HAGBs). The application of the RS method, with an imposed equivalent strain of 1.4, led to the formation of a heterogeneous microstructure with a high number of LAGBs, while the HPS method, with an imposed equivalent strain of 7.8, led to the formation of a relatively homogeneous ultrafine-grained microstructure with a significant predominance of HAGBs. Microstructure analyses after creep testing showed that the microstructure of RS- and HPS-processed P92 steel is quite stable, but a slight coarsening of subgrains and grains during creep testing can be observed. Constant load tensile creep tests at 500 °C and initial stresses ranging from 300 to 900 MPa revealed that the specimens processed by HPS exhibited higher creep strength (slower minimum creep rate) and ductility compared to the coarse-grained and RS-processed P92 steel. However, the HPS-processed P92 steel also exhibited lower values of stress exponent n than the other investigated states of P92 steel. For this reason, the differences in minimum creep rates determined for different states decrease with decreasing values of applied stress, and at applied stresses lower than 500 MPa, the creep resistance of the RS-processed state is higher than the creep resistance of the HPS-processed state.

A titaniumiron intermetallic with minor addition of manganese (TiFe0.7Mn0.3) was processed by severe plastic deformation through highpressure sliding (HPS). A rectangular strip sample was embedded in stainless steel and strained under a pressure of 4 GPa at room temperature. This paper presents an overview of the recent development of incremental feeding high-pressure sliding (IF-HPS) process for grain refinement of metallic sheets with enlarged areas. The IF-HPS process is a method of severe plastic deformation (SPD) under high pressure without increasing the machine capacity. The IF-HPS process combines an incremental feeding technique with the high-pressure sliding (HPS) process so that a severely deformed area can be extended. Development of the IF-HPS process includes the use of flat-type anvils instead of groove-type anvils, which makes it easier to enlarge the SPD-processed areas. The development is also described in terms of the sliding mode and the feeding pattem, where the former is determined by the sliding distance and the numbers of the reciprocation of the sliding and the latter by the feeding distance and the feeding direction. The application of the IF-HPS process is made to metallic materials such as a Ni-based superalloy (Inconel 718), a Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy (F1295) and commercially available Al alloys (A1050, A3105, A5052 and A5182). It is shown that the grain refinement is successfully achieved so that superplastic elongation more than 400% is attained in the Ni- and Ti-based alloys, and the room-temperature tensile strength is well enhanced in the Al alloys. It is then demonstrated that the IF-HPS process is promising to extend the SPD-processed area without increasing the machine capacity. Furthermore, a new approach is suggested for material design, such as the hybrid materials composed of conventional and fine-grained materials and functionally graded materials. This study introduces a process of severe plastic deformation (SPD) called incremental feeding high-pressure sliding (IF-HPS) where significant grain refinement is possible in an enlarged sheet area. The IF-HPS process is applied to Al alloys such as A1050, A3105, A5052 and A5182. The grain sizes were refined to the submicrometer ranges and the tensile strength increased to almost twice as much as the annealed states. The conditions for the IF-HPS process are optimized so that the tensile strength remains high without initiation of cracks. The process conditions are also investigated to achieve homogeneous development of the tensile properties throughout the processed sheets. It is demonstrated that the IF-HPS process is useful to extend the SPD-processed area without increasing the machine capacity while maintaining enhanced mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
