Abstract The study investigates the thermal expansion and superconducting properties of a CuAl2‐type (tetragonal) superconductor CoZr2 under high pressures. High‐pressure synchrotron X‐ray diffraction is performed in a pressure range of 2.9 GPa < P < 10.4 GPa, and it is discovered that CoZr2 exhibits volumetric negative thermal expansion (NTE) under high pressures. Although uniaxial positive thermal expansion (PTE) along the a‐axis is observed under ambient pressure, it is suppressed by pressure, whereas a large uniaxial NTE along the c‐axis is maintained under the pressure regime. Because of the combination of the suppressed uniaxial PTE along the a‐axis and uniaxial NTE along the c‐axis, volumetric NTE is achieved under high pressure in CoZr2. The volumetric NTE mechanism is based on the flexible crystal structure caused by the soft Co–Co bond, as observed in the isostructural compound FeZr2, which exhibits a uniaxial NTE along the c‐axis. High‐pressure electrical resistance measurements of CoZr2 are performed and confirm superconductivity at 0.03 GPa < P < 41.9 GPa. Because of the coexistence of the two phenomena, volumetric NTE and superconductivity, in CoZr2 under high pressure, coexistence can be achieved under ambient pressure by tuning the chemical composition after the present observation.

Magnetic refrigeration materials containing rare-earth ions are promising for hydrogen liquefaction and energy storage applications. Here, the role of crystal-field level splitting on magnetic entropy change is systematically investigated, comparing mean-field calculations with neutron scattering experiments in HoB2.

Stimulated by a recent report of a giant magnetocaloric effect in HoB2 found via machine-learning predictions, we have explored the magnetocaloric properties of a related compound ErB2 that has remained the last ferromagnetic material among the rare-earth diboride (REB2) family with unreported magnetic entropy change $|{\rm \Delta} {S_M}|$. The evaluated $|{\rm \Delta} {S_M}|$ at field change of 5 T in ErB2 turned out to be as high as 26.1 J kg−1 K−1 around the ferromagnetic transition (${T_C}$) of 14 K. In this series, HoB2 is found to be the material with the largest $|{\rm \Delta} {S_M}|$ as the model predicted, while the predicted values showed a deviation with a systematic error compared to the experimental values. Through a coalition analysis using SHAP, we explore how this rare-earth dependence and the deviation in the prediction are deduced in the model. We further discuss how SHAP analysis can be useful in clarifying favorable combinations of constituent atoms through the machine-learned model with compositional descriptors. This analysis helps us to perform materials design with aid of machine learning of materials data.

The automatic extraction of materials and related properties from the scientific literature is gaining attention in data-driven materials science (Materials Informatics). In this paper, we discuss Grobid-superconductors, our solution for automatically extracting superconductor material names and respective properties from text. Built as a Grobid module, it combines machine learning and heuristic approaches in a multi-step architecture that supports input data as raw text or PDF documents. Using Grobid-superconductors, we built SuperCon2, a database of 40,324 materials and properties records from 37,700 papers. The material (or sample) information is represented by name, chemical formula, and material class, and is characterized by shape, doping, substitution variables for components, and substrate as adjoined information. The properties include the Tc superconducting critical temperature and, when available, applied pressure with the Tc measurement method.

ABSTRACTWe propose a semi-automatic staging area for efficiently building an accurate database of experimental physical properties of superconductors from literature, called SuperCon2, to enrich the existing manually-built superconductor database SuperCon. Here we report our curation interface (SuperCon2 Interface) and a workflow managing the state transitions of each examined record, to validate the dataset of superconductors from PDF documents collected using Grobid-superconductors in a previous work. This curation workflow allows both automatic and manual operations, the former contains ‘anomaly detection’ that scans new data identifying outliers, and a ‘training data collector’ mechanism that collects training data examples based on manual corrections. Such training data collection policy is effective in improving the machine-learning models with a reduced number of examples. For manual operations, the interface (SuperCon2 interface) is developed to increase efficiency during manual correction by providing a smart interface and an enhanced PDF document viewer. We show that our interface significantly improves the curation quality by boosting precision and recall as compared with the traditional ‘manual correction’. Our semi-automatic approach would provide a solution for achieving a reliable database with text-data mining of scientific documents.

Abstract High-entropy-alloy (HEA) superconductors are a new class of disordered superconductors. However, commonality of superconducting characteristics of HEA materials is unclear. Here, we have investigated the crystal and electronic structure, and the robustness of superconducting states in a HEA-type metal telluride (MTe; M = Ag, In, Sn, Pb, Bi) under high pressure, and the results were compared with the pressure effects for a middle-entropy system (AgPbBiTe3) and a reference system of PbTe. When the crystal structure is CsCl-type, all phases show superconductivity under high pressure but exhibit different pressure dependences of the transition temperature (T c). For PbTe, its T c decreases with pressure. In contrast, the T c of HEA-type AgInSnPbBiTe5 is almost independent of pressure, for pressures ranging from 13.0 to 35.1 GPa. Those results suggest that the robustness of superconductivity to external pressure is linked to the configurational entropy of mixing at the M site in MTe. Since the trend is quite similar to previous work on a HEA (Ti–Zr–Hf–Nb–Ta), where the robustness of superconductivity was observed up to ~ 200 GPa, we propose that the robustness of superconductivity under high pressure would be a universal feature in HEA-type superconductors.

Background: No study has examined the association between constipation and atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants and toddlers. We aimed to explore that association in toddlers using the data from a nationwide birth cohort study. Methods: From the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, a nationwide prospective birth cohort study that began in 2011, children born in a singleton live birth were analyzed. Participants completed questionnaires containing questions related to bowel movements and AD, during 1.5 to 3 years after birth. Constipation at 1 year of age was defined as having ≤2 bowel movements per week. AD was defined based on participant’s responses to the modified ISAAC questionnaire and/or self-reported physician’s diagnosis. Outcome was defined as the cumulative number of AD cases that occurred until 3 years of age. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for development of AD were calculated by a multivariable logistic regression. Results: From a total of 62,777 participants who met the study inclusion criteria, 14,188 children (22.6%) were affected by AD between the ages of 1.5 and 3 years. The adjusted OR of developing AD for the presence versus absence of constipation at 1 year of age was 1.18 (95% CI, 1.01–1.38). Conclusion: Constipation at 1 year of age was associated with a slightly higher risk of AD until 3 years of age.

A growing number of papers are published in the area of superconducting materials science. However, novel text and data mining (TDM) processes are still needed to efficiently access and exploit this accumulated knowledge, paving the way towards data-driven materials design. Herein, we present SuperMat (Superconductor Materials), an annotated corpus of linked data derived from scientific publications on superconductors, which comprises 142 articles, 16052 entities, and 1398 links that are characterised into six categories: the names, classes, and properties of materials; links to their respective superconducting critical temperature (Tc); and parametric conditions such as applied pressure or measurement methods. The construction of SuperMat resulted from a fruitful collaboration between computer scientists and material scientists, and its high quality is ensured through validation by domain experts. The quality of the annotation guidelines was ensured by satisfactory Inter Annotator Agreement (IAA) between the annotators and the domain experts. SuperMat includes the dataset, annotation guidelines, and annotation support tools that use automatic suggestions to help minimise human errors.

Recently, a massive magnetocaloric effect near the liquefaction temperature of hydrogen has been reported in the ferromagnetic material HoB2. Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho1-xDyxB2 alloys (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). We find that the Curie temperature (TC) gradually increases upon Dy substitution, while the magnitude of the magnetic entropy change |ΔSM| and adiabatic temperature change ΔTad showed a gradual decrease. On the other hand, due to the presence of successive transitions in these alloys, the peak height of the above magnetocaloric properties tends to be kept in a wide temperature range, leading to a relatively robust figure of merit in a wide temperature span. These alloys could be interesting candidates for magnetic refrigeration in the temperature range of 10–60 K.

Abstract Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are currently used as magnetic flux detectors with ultra-high sensitivity for various applications such as medical diagnostics and magnetic material microstructure analysis. Single-crystalline superconducting boron-doped diamond is an excellent candidate for fabricating high-performance SQUIDs because of its robustness and high transition temperature, critical current density, and critical field. Here, we propose a fabrication process for a single-crystalline boron-doped diamond Josephson junction with regrowth-induced step edge structure and demonstrate the first operation of a single-crystalline boron-doped diamond SQUID above 2 K. We demonstrate that the step angle is a significant parameter for forming the Josephson junction and that the step angle can be controlled by adjusting the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition conditions of the regrowth layer. The fabricated junction exhibits superconductor–weak superconductor–superconductor-type behaviour without hysteresis and a high critical current density of 5800 A/cm2.

In functional materials such as thermoelectric materials and superconductors, the interplay between functionality, electronic structure, and phonon characteristics is one of the key factors to improve functionality and to understand the underlying mechanisms. In the first part of this article, we briefly review investigations on lattice anharmonicity in functional materials on the basis of the Grüneisen parameter (γG). We show that γG can be a good index for large lattice anharmonicity and for detecting a change in anharmonicity amplitude in functional materials. Then, we show original results on the estimation of γG for recently developed high-entropy alloy-type (HEA-type) functional materials with a layered structure and a NaCl-type structure. As a common trend for those two systems with two- and three-dimensional structures, we found that γG increased with a slight increase in the configurational entropy of mixing (ΔSmix) and then decreased with increasing ΔSmix in the high-entropy region.

Candidate compounds for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were exhaustively searched by the high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database named AtomWork. We focused on PbBi2Te4 which has the similar electronic band structure and the same crystal structure with those of a pressure-induced superconductor SnBi2Se4 explored by the same data-driven approach. The PbBi2Te4 was successfully synthesized as single crystals using a melt and slow cooling method. The core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed Pb2+, Bi3+ and Te2- valence states in PbBi2Te4. The thermoelectric properties of the PbBi2Te4 sample were measured at ambient pressure and the electrical resistance was also evaluated under high pressure using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. The resistance decreased with increasing of the pressure, and pressure-induced superconducting transitions were discovered at 2.5 K under 10 GPa. The maximum superconducting transition temperature increased up to 8.4 K at 21.7 GPa. The data-driven approach shows promising power to accelerate the discovery of new thermoelectric and superconducting materials.

Abstract Background Gallbladder agenesis is a rare congenital malformation. More than 50% of cases are isolated and asymptomatic. These asymptomatic patients are principally healthy and need no interventions. However, some patients develop symptoms, presenting with clinical signs and complaints similar to those of biliary tract disease. Symptoms commonly occur in the fourth or fifth decade of life of the patient. At the present time, gallbladder agenesis is diagnosed using a combination of imaging modalities, without surgical intervention, to avert serious complications following surgery. Case presentation We describe a 13-year-old Japanese girl with a history of recurrent hepatic impairment, which had not been thoroughly investigated. She was referred to our hospital following 2 days of fever, fatigue, and abnormal blood tests suggested impaired liver function. Data from chest X-ray findings combined with a positive loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay result indicated Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia, which was treated with oral azithromycin. To investigate potential hepatic impairment, we performed several imaging studies, namely, abdominal ultrasonography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, and contrast enhanced computed tomography. These imaging studies revealed a normal liver; however, the gallbladder was not in the usual nor any aberrant position in imaging investigations of the patient. Based on these results, we diagnosed gallbladder agenesis; however, the etiology of her hepatic impairment has not been elucidated. Conclusion We present a case of gallbladder agenesis with hepatic impairment, where the diagnosis was made without surgical intervention. Clinicians should perform a detailed investigation when they encounter repeated hepatic impairment.

Layered La(O,F)BiS2 exhibits drastic enhancements of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) under high pressure among the BiS2-based superconducting family. However, the high-pressure application beyond a high-Tc phase of the monoclinic structure has not been conducted. In this study, the electrical transport properties in La(O,F)BiS2 single crystal are measured under high pressures up to 83 GPa. An insulating phase without superconductivity is observed under a higher-pressure region above 16 GPa. Moreover, the sample exhibits metallicity and superconductivity above 60 GPa. The newly observed hidden semiconducting phase and reentrant superconductivity have attracted much attention in BiS2-based compounds.

Abstract Background Sweet’s syndrome is characterized by fever, leukocytosis, and tender erythematous papules or nodules. It is a rare condition, particularly in the pediatric population, and has recently been proposed to be an autoinflammatory disease that occurs due to innate immune system dysfunction, involving several cytokines, which causes abnormally increased inflammation. To the best of our knowledge, no report has documented the cytokine profile in a pediatric patient with Sweet’s syndrome. Case presentation A previously healthy 34-month-old Japanese girl was hospitalized because of remittent fever and pain in her right lower extremity with erythematous nodules. A skin biopsy of the eruption revealed dermal perivascular neutrophilic infiltration with no evidence of vasculitis, which led to the diagnosis of Sweet’s syndrome. She was prescribed with orally administered prednisolone and a prompt response was observed; then, the prednisolone dose was tapered. During treatment she developed upper and lower urinary tract infections, after which her cutaneous symptoms failed to improve despite increasing the prednisolone dosage. To avoid long-term use of systemic corticosteroids, orally administered potassium iodide was initiated, but it was unsuccessful. However, orally administered colchicine along with prednisolone effectively ameliorated her symptoms, and prednisolone dosage was reduced again. We analyzed the circulating levels of interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, interleukin-18, neopterin, and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors I and II, in order to clarify the pathogenesis of Sweet’s syndrome. Of these cytokines, only interleukin-6 levels were elevated prior to orally administered prednisolone therapy. Following therapy, the elevated interleukin-6 levels gradually diminished to almost normal levels; interleukin-1β and interleukin-18 stayed within normal ranges throughout the treatment. Neopterin became marginally elevated after the start of treatment. Both soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor I and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor II levels increased shortly after the onset of urinary tract infections. Conclusions This is the first case report of pediatric Sweet’s syndrome in which serum cytokine levels were investigated. Future studies should gather more evidence to elucidate the pathophysiology of Sweet’s syndrome.

Ce1−xPrxOBiS2 (0. 1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9) single crystals were grown using a CsCl flux method. Their structural and physical properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical resistivity. All of the Ce1−xPrxOBiS2 single crystals with 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 exhibited tetragonal phase. With increasing Pr content, the a-axis and c-axis lattice parameters decreased and increased, respectively. Transmission electron microscope analysis of Ce0.1Pr0.9OBiS2 (x = 0.9) single crystal showed no stacking faults. Atomic-resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry mapping revealed that Bi, Ce/Pr, O, and S occupied different crystallographic sites, while Ce and Pr randomly occupied the same sites. X-ray absorption spectra showed that an increase of the Pr ratio increased the ratio of Ce4+/Ce3+. All of the Ce1−xPrxOBiS2 crystals showed superconducting transition, with a maximum transition temperature of ~4 K at x = 0.9.

LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 nanosheets were produced by ultrasonification. A slightly reddish colloidal suspension was obtained by ultrasonification of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 powder in ethanol. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of the dried suspension indicated the nanosheet morphology of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, and the electron diffraction spots indicated 4-fold symmetry. The thickness of the sheets was 2–6 nm, which corresponded to 2–4 unit cells of the c-axis of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2.

Recently, robustness of superconductivity (transition temperature, Tc) under high pressures has been observed in high-entropy alloy (HEA), bcc-type Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta, and HEA-type compounds (Ag, In, Sn, Pb, Bi)Te with a NaCl-type structure. Since those materials have three-dimensional crystal structure, investigation on the pressure dependence of Tc of low-dimensional materials is needed to understand the phenomena. Here, we investigated the superconducting properties and the crystal structure of BiS2-based layered system REO0.5F0.5BiS2. Although the robustness of Tc was induced in MTe with increasing M-site configurational entropy, the increase in RE-site configurational entropy does not induce robustness of Tc under high pressures in REO0.5F0.5BiS2. The crystal structure of HEA-type REO0.5F0.5BiS2 was confirmed as monoclinic P21=m, which is the same space group as the zero-entropy counterpart LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. The results suggest that an increase in configurational entropy at blocking layers do not affect crystal structure and superconducting properties under high pressures in the BiS2-based layered system. Epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (La0.18Sr0.82)(Al0.59Ta0.41)O3 (LSAT), CaF2-buffered LSAT and bare CaF2 substrates, which exhibit an almost identical in-plane lattice parameter. The composition of all Fe(Se,Te) films were determined to be FeSe0.7Te0.3 by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, irrespective of the substrate. Albeit the lattice parameters of all templates have comparable values, the in-plane lattice parameter of the FeSe0.7Te0.3 films varies significantly. We found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of FeSe0.7Te0.3 thin films is strongly correlated with their a-axis lattice parameter. The highest Tc of over 19 K was observed for the film on bare CaF2 substrate, which is related to unexpectedly large in-plane compressive strain originating mostly from the thermal expansion mismatch between the FeSe0.7Te0.3 film and the substrate.

We have developed the rapid growth method for HgBa _2 Ca _2 Cu _3 O _8+ _δ (Hg-1223) by using a sealed quartz tube technique with a small amount of cesium chloride (CsCl). Our results suggested that a small amount of CsCl works as a flux during the crystal growth of Hg-1223. The developed method achieved the growth of the Hg-1223 single crystal pieces in 4 h. Furthermore, the grown single crystals showed high purity. The developed method is useful for application purposes such as high transition-temperature ( T _c ) superconducting cable.

We synthesized superconducting fullerene nanowhiskers (C60NWs) by potassium (K) intercalation. They showed large superconducting volume fractions, as high as 80%. The superconducting transition temperature at 17 K was independent of the K content (x) in the range between 1.6 and 6.0 in K-doped C60 nanowhiskers (KxC60NWs), while the superconducting volume fractions changed with x. The highest shielding fraction of a full shielding volume was observed in the material of K3.3C60NW by heating at 200 °C. On the other hand, that of a K-doped fullerene (K-C60) crystal was less than 1%. We report the superconducting behaviors of our newly synthesized KxC60NWs in comparison to those of KxC60 crystals, which show superconductivity at 19 K in K3C60. The lattice structures are also discussed, based on the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses.

Most isolated episodes of apparent life-threatening events (ALTEs) do not lead to the diagnosis of serious conditions, and their prognoses are generally benign. However, recurrent ALTEs are often associated with a risk of future serious adverse events and should be evaluated for appropriate management. Here we present ALTE case in which gastric volvulus associated gastroesophageal reflux disease was detected as an etiology initially, followed by the detection of epilepsy as another etiology. Clinicians should consider possibility of two or more etiologies in a single recurrent ALTE case.

Revealing the universal behaviors of iron-based superconductors (FBS) is important to elucidate the microscopic theory of superconductivity. In this work, we investigate the effect of in-plane strain on the slope of the upper critical field H _c2 at the superconducting transition temperature T _c (i.e. −d H _c2 /d T ) for FeSe _0.7 Te _0.3 thin films. The in-plane strain tunes T _c in a broad range, while the composition and disorder are almost unchanged. We show that −d H _c2 /d T scales linearly with T _c , indicating that FeSe _0.7 Te _0.3 follows the same universal behavior as observed for pnictide FBS. The observed behavior is consistent with a multiband superconductivity paired by interband interaction such as sign change s _± superconductivity.

Antimony (Sb) substitution of less than 8% was examined on a single crystal of a layered superconductor NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. The superconducting transition temperature of the substituted samples decreased as Sb concentration increased. A lattice constant along the c-axis showed a large decrease compared with that along the a-axis. Since in-plane chemical pressure monotonically decreased as Sb concentration increased, the suppression of the superconductivity is attributed to the decrease in the in-plane chemical pressure.

We estimated Grüneisen parameter (γG) to investigate lattice anharmonicity in a layered BiS2-based superconductor system REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), where in-plane chemical pressure was tuned by the ionic radii of the RE elements, and the carrier concentration was tuned by F concentration. With increasing in-plane chemical pressure, bulk modulus remarkably increases, and a larger γG is observed for RE = Nd. The dependence of γG on in-plane chemical pressure exhibits a good correlation with Tc, suggesting that a larger γG results in a higher Tc in the system. In addition, γG shows a slight decrease by a decrease of F concentration (x) in REO1-xFxBiS2. Our results suggest that the enhancement of anharmonicity in REO1-xFxBiS2 is achieved by the suppression of in-plane disorder by in-plane chemical pressure and carrier doping. From analogy to thermoelectric LaOBi(S,Se)2, in which anharmonic vibration of Bi along the c-axis was enhanced by in-plane chemical pressure, we propose that the anharmonic vibration of Bi along the c-axis is present and in REO1-xFxBiS2, and the enhancement of the anharmonicity is positively linked to superconducting Tc and pairing mechanisms. We report on scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments on (1 1 1)-oriented epitaxial films of heavily boron-doped diamond grown by using the microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. STM/STS measurements were performed by 3He-refrigerator based STM under ultra-high vacuum. The STM topography on the film surface shows a corrugation (with a typical size of ~1 μm) and grain-like microstructures (~5–20 nm). The tunneling conductance spectra do not show large spatial dependence and superconductivity is observed independent of the surface structures. The tunneling spectra are analyzed by the Dynes function and the superconducting energy gap is estimated to be Δ=0.87 meV at T=0.47 K, corresponding to 2Δ/kBTc=3.7. The relatively large value of the broadening parameter Γ=0.38 meV is discussed in terms of the inelastic electron scattering processes.

We follow the evolution of the electronic properties of the titled homologous series when n as well as the atomic type of A and M are varied where for n = 1, A = Ca, Sr and M = Rh, Ir while for n = 3, A = Ca, Sr and M = Rh. The crystal structure of n = 1 members is known to be CaRh2B2-type (Fddd), while that of n = 3 is Ca3Rh8B6-type (Fmmm); the latter can be visualized as a stacking of structural fragments from AM3B2 (P6/mmm) and AM2B2. The metallic properties of the n = 1 and 3 members are distinctly different: on the one hand, the n = 1 members are characterized by a linear coefficient of the electronic specific heat γ ≈ 3 mJ mol−1 K−2, a Debye temperature θD ≈ 300 K, a normal conductivity down to 2 K and a relatively strong linear magnetoresistivity for fields up to 150 kOe. The n = 3 family, on the other hand, exhibits γ ≈ 18 mJ mol−1 K−2, θD ≈ 330 K, a weak linear magnetoresistivity and an onset of superconductivity (for Ca3Rh8B6, Tc = 4.0 K and Hc2 = 14.5 kOe, while for Sr3Rh8 B6, Tc = 3.4 K and Hc2 ≈ 4.0 kOe). These remarkable differences are consistent with the findings of the electronic band structures and density of state (DOS) calculations. In particular, satisfactory agreement between the measured and calculated γ was obtained. Furthermore, the Fermi level, EF, of Ca3Rh8B6 lies at almost the top of a pronounced local DOS peak, while that of CaRh2B2 lies at a local valley: this is the main reason behind the differences between the, e.g., superconducting properties. Finally, although all atoms contribute to the DOS at EF, the contribution of the Rh atoms is the strongest.

The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, in iron-based solids can be enhanced by applied pressure: Tc increases from 8 to 37 K for the 11-type FeSe when the pressure is raised from 0 to 4 GPa. High-pressure studies can elucidate the mechanism of superconductivity in such novel materials. In this paper, we present a high-pressure study of Fe(Se1−xTex) and Fe(Se1−xSx). In the case of Fe(Se1−xTex), the maximum Tc under high pressure did not exceed the Tc of FeSe, which can be attributed to the structural transition to the monoclinic phase. For Fe(Se1−xSx) (0 < x < 0.3), Tc exhibited a significant increase with pressure; however, the maximum Tc under high pressure did not exceed the Tc of FeSe. This may be due to the disorder induced by substituting S for Se, which is similar to the pressure effect on Tc for the 1111-type superconductor Ca(Fe1−xCox)AsF. The Tc of Fe(Se1−xSx) showed a complex behavior below 1 GPa, first decreasing and then increasing with increasing pressure. From high-pressure x-ray diffraction measurements, the Tc (P) curve was correlated with the local structural parameter.

Since the discovery of superconductivity in diamond, much attention has been given to the issue of superconductivity in semiconductors. Because diamond has a large band gap of 5.5 eV, it is called a wide-gap semiconductor. Upon heavy boron doping over 3×1020 cm−3, diamond becomes metallic and demonstrates superconductivity at temperatures below 11.4 K. This discovery implies that a semiconductor can become a superconductor upon carrier doping. Recently, superconductivity was also discovered in boron-doped silicon and SiC semiconductors. The number of superconducting semiconductors has increased. In 2008 an Fe-based superconductor was discovered in a research project on carrier doping in a LaCuSeO wide-gap semiconductor. This discovery enhanced research activities in the field of superconductivity, where many scientists place particular importance on superconductivity in semiconductors.This focus issue features a variety of topics on superconductivity in semiconductors selected from the 2nd International Workshop on Superconductivity in Diamond and Related Materials (IWSDRM2008), which was held at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan in July 2008. The 1st workshop was held in 2005 and was published as a special issue in Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM) in 2006 (Takano 2006 Sci. Technol. Adv. Mater. 7 S1.The selection of papers describe many important experimental and theoretical studies on superconductivity in semiconductors. Topics on boron-doped diamond include isotope effects (Ekimov et al) and the detailed structure of boron sites, and the relation between superconductivity and disorder induced by boron doping. Regarding other semiconductors, the superconducting properties of silicon and SiC (Kriener et al, Muranaka et al and Yanase et al) are discussed, and In2O3 (Makise et al) is presented as a new superconducting semiconductor. Iron-based superconductors are presented as a new series of high-TC superconductors (Tamegai et al), and the mechanism of superconductivity is discussed. Last but not least, a novel highest-density phase of boron is produced and characterized (Zarechnaya et al).We hope that this focus issue will help readers to understand the frontiers of superconductivity in semiconductors and assist in the application of new devices using a combination of superconductivity and semiconductivity.

This review summarizes recent results obtained by 11B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on boron-doped diamond, grown by the high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition techniques. Simple single-pulse experiments as well as advanced two-dimensional NMR experiments were applied to the boron sites in diamond. It is shown that magic-angle spinning at magnetic fields above 10 T is suitable for observation of high-resolution 11B spectra of boron-doped diamond. For boron-doped HPHT diamonds, the existence of the excess boron that does not contribute to electrical conductivity was confirmed and its 11B NMR signal was characterized. The point-defect structures (B+H complexes and -B-B-/-B-C-B- clusters), postulated previously for the excess boron, were discarded and graphite-like structures were assigned instead.
