This article presents a new defected ground structure (DGS) and expands its application for designing high‐performance bandpass filters based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) platform. The presented DGS is consisted of two complementary stepped‐impedance E‐shaped structures and placed them together face‐to‐face. Such designed DGS is inserted into the top layer of a millimeter‐wave SIW to act as high‐frequency stopping property. Based on the proposed DGS, two high‐performance SIW bandpass filters with single‐band and dual‐band features are achieved, by fabricating prototypes and experimentally investigating the filtering performances. Good agreements between the simulations and experiments are obtained. Such proposed SIW bandpass filters based on the designed new DGS can be widely used in the upcoming 5G communication area. In recent years, face recognition has made a remarkable breakthrough due to the emergence of deep learning. However, compared with frontal face recognition, plenty of deep face recognition models still suffer serious performance degradation when handling profile faces. To address this issue, we propose a novel Frontal-Centers Guided Loss (FCGFace) to obtain highly discriminative features for face recognition. Most existing discriminative feature learning approaches project features from the same class into a separated latent subspace. These methods only model the distribution at the identity-level but ignore the latent relationship between frontal and profile viewpoints. Different from these methods, FCGFace takes viewpoints into consideration by modeling the distribution at both the identity-level and the viewpoint-level. At the identity-level, a softmax-based loss is employed for a relatively rough classification. At the viewpoint-level, centers of frontal face features are defined to guide the optimization conducted in a more refined way. Specifically, our FCGFace is capable of adaptively adjusting the distribution of profile face features and narrowing the gap between them and frontal face features during different training stages to form compact identity clusters. Extensive experimental results on popular benchmarks, including cross-pose datasets (CFP-FP, CPLFW, VGGFace2-FP, and Multi-PIE) and non-cross-pose datasets (YTF, LFW, AgeDB-30, CALFW, IJB-B, IJB-C, and RFW), have demonstrated the superiority of our FCGFace over the SOTA competitors. In this letter, a Fresnel region focus beam circular antenna array with a radial waveguide feed network is designed. Vertical printed probes and metal posts are employed within the radial waveguide for enabling the design of nonuniform amplitude profiles, connected to short-length microstrip transmission lines, which synthesize the required phase profile. This synthesis method simplifies the design of conventional radial waveguide based antenna arrays and avoids the use of complex iterative optimization algorithms. A 5.8 GHz antenna prototype with diameter 610 mm and thickness 21.5 mm is fabricated and measured to verify the correctness of the proposed design method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The management of patients with triple‑negative breast cancer is challenging due to the lack of effective therapeutic options, aggressive behavior and relatively poor prognosis. Xi Huang pills (XHP) are a well‑known traditional Chinese medicine that demonstrate anticancer activities. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antitumor effects of XHP on MDA‑MB‑231 cells in vitro and in vivo, and its potential underlying molecular mechanisms. In the present study, an MTT assay was used to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of XHP on MDA‑MB‑231 cells. In order to investigate the effects further, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential assays were performed, as well as western blot analyses. In addition, a tumor xenograft model was employed to investigate the effects of XHP in vivo. The results of the MTT assay demonstrated that the viability of MDA‑MB‑231 cells was markedly inhibited by XHP in a dose-and time‑dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of XHP on the viability of MDA‑MB‑231 cells was greater when compared with MCF‑10A cells. An increase in apoptosis and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential was observed following 4, 8 and 12 mg/ml XHP treatment of MDA‑MB‑231 cells. The protein expression levels of cleaved caspase‑3 were increased by 1.62‑, 2.13‑ and 2.19‑fold, respectively, when compared with the untreated controls, whereas no effects on the expression of B‑cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl‑2) or Bcl‑2‑associated X protein (Bax) were observed. The results of the cell cycle distribution assay analysis demonstrated that XHP treatment arrested cells at the G2/M phase. In addition, XHP treatment decreased the expression of cyclin A and increased the expression of p21Cip1. In vivo experiments revealed that XHP inhibited the growth of MDA‑MB‑231 xenograft tumors without body weight loss, and demonstrated similar effects on the protein expression levels of cleaved caspase 3, cyclin A and p21Cip1 as observed in vitro. In conclusion, the viability of MDA‑MB‑231 cells was inhibited by XHP in a dose‑dependent, time‑dependent and cell‑selective manner in vitro, and the potential underlying mechanisms may involve apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. XHP may induce apoptosis in MDA‑MB‑231 cells via the intrinsic pathway, which does not involve the Bcl‑2/Bax ratio. G2/M phase arrest may have been due to the integrated action of decreased cyclin A expression and increased p21Cip1 expression. This paper experimentally investigated the performances of an automotive air conditioning (AAC) system with the liquid-vapor separation micro-channel condenser (LSMC) and a common parallel flow micro-channel condenser (PFMC), respectively. The performances of the two systems were compared under nomal running condition of IMACA. The cooling capacity of the LSMC system was 5.18% higher than that of the PFMC and the EER value of the LSMC system was 3.73% higher than that of the PFMC. The further investigation on the performance of the two systems were measured under the outdoor dry bulb temperature varying from 29 °C to 41 °C while the indoor dry bulb and wet bulb temperature fixed at 27 °C and 19.5 °C. In addition, under the standard condition of IMACA, the thermodynamic performance of two systems under the condenser air face velocity varying from 1.5 to 4.5 m/s was investigated. Compared with the PFMC system, the cooling capacity and EER of the LSMC system were improved by 1.79%∼8.49% and 1.43%∼7.18%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achieving a high Q-factor metamaterial unit for a precision sensing application is highly demanded in recent years, and most of the developed high-performance sensors based on the high-Q metamaterial units are due to the dielectric/magnetic property changes of the substrate/superstrate. In this paper, we propose a completely different sensing metamaterial unit configuration, with good sensing sensitivity and precision properties, based on the thermally tunable liquid metals. Specifically, a basic thermally tunable metamaterial unit, the mercury-inspired split ring resonator (SRR), is firstly presented to theoretically show the magnetic resonance and negative permeability frequency band shift properties under different background temperatures. Then, considering the radiation loss mechanism of the conventional SRR metamaterial unit and based on the physically reliable ability of liquid metals, the modified mercury-inspired Fano and toroidal resonators with a large frequency tuning range and high Q-factor are developed and discussed. The numerical demonstrations have shown that the designed Fano and toroidal resonators have much better sensing precision performances compared to the conventional SRR for the temperature sensing application. The experimental demonstrations have also been used to verify the proposed mercury-based toroidal resonators, and good agreements are achieved.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between tumor necrosis factor-α ( TNF -α) and the development of gastric cancer, and to investigate whether it can be used as a biological marker for gastric cancer. In the current study, a new meta-analysis was performed to assess the association between TNF -α gene polymorphisms and gastric cancer susceptibility. Subgroup analyses based on ethnicity, control population source and non-cardia cancers were also conducted. Summary odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. TNF-α 308 polymorphisms indicated a significant relationship with gastric cancer risk among a normal population [GA/AA vs. GG; 1.17 (1.10-1.23)]. In analysis stratified by ethnicity, TNF-α 238 displayed an association with gastric cancer risk in eastern populations [GA/AA vs. GG: 1.24 (1.02-1.50)], but not in western populations [GA/AA vs. GG: 0.96 (0.79-1.18)]. The overall ORs (95% CIs) for TNF-α 857, TNF-α 1031 and TNF-α 863 were 1.13 (1.04-1.24), 0.94 (0.85-1.05) and 0.89 (0.78-1.02), respectively, under dominant genetic model comparison. Among the above three SNPs, only TNF-α 857 was robustly associated with gastric cancer inclination, and this association remained consistently robust when limited to non-cardia gastric cancers [GA/AA vs. GG: 1.16 (1.03-1.31)]. TNF-α 308 and TNF-α 857 genotypes were potential risk factors of statistical significance in gastric cancer, and TNF-α 238 indicated to be significantly associated with gastric cancer risk only in eastern populations. TNF-α 1031 and TNF-α 863 were not significantly associated with gastric cancer risk.

The management of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is challenging due to the aggressive behavior, lack of therapeutic options and relatively poor prognosis. Xihuang pill (XHP) is a well-known Traditional Chinese Medicine with anticancer activity. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the aqueous extract of XHP (AEXHP) has anti-proliferative activity against the Hs578T TNBC cell line, and to elucidate its molecular mechanisms of action. First, an MTT assay was used to evaluate the anti-proliferative activity of AEXHP on the Hs578T cell line; furthermore, the cell cycle distribution, mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptotic rate were determined by flow cytometry, and western blot analysis was used to assess the expression of apoptosis and cell cycle regulatory proteins to investigate the mechanisms of action. The results revealed that the cell viability was significantly inhibited by AEXHP in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential loss were detected, and after treatment with 4, 8 and 12 mg/ml AEXHP for 24 h, cleaved caspase-3 was 1.70-, 1.81- and 1.84-fold of that of the control, while procaspase-3, procaspase-8, cleaved caspase-8, B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) and the Bcl-2/Bax ratio were not significantly affected. Cell cycle analysis revealed that treatment with AEXHP led to S-phase arrest of Hs578T cells. Furthermore, AEXHP treatment resulted in decreased expression of cyclin A and cyclin dependent kinase 2 (CDK2), and increased expression of cyclin E and p21 Cip1 , as compared to the control group. In conclusion, the viability of Hs578T cells was significantly inhibited by AEXHP in a dose- and time-dependent manner, the likely mechanisms of which being induction of apoptosis, probably via the intrinsic, Bcl-2-independent pathway, and cell cycle arrest in S phase due to decreased expression of cyclin A and CDK2, and increased expression of cyclin E and p21 Cip1 .

Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are widely used in the treatment of hormone‑dependent breast cancer and as a result, aromatase inhibitor‑associated bone loss (AIBL) has become a major concern amongst patients receiving AI treatment. Modified Shu‑Gan‑Liang‑Xue decoction (mSGLXD), a clinical prescription, has been used for ameliorating AIBL in patients with breast cancer for decades and has achieved good clinical efficacy. However, the mechanism underlying how mSGLXD influences bone homeostasis and alleviates AIBL has remained elusive. In the present study, mSGLXD was supplemented with Rhizoma Drynariae containing phytoestrogens, and the safety of mSGLXD was evaluated. mSGLXD did not possess estrogenic activity and significantly inhibited the proliferation of estrogen receptor‑positive breast cancer cell line MCF‑7, which suggested that mSGLXD was safe for postmenopausal patients with breast cancer. Subsequently, the effects of mSGLXD alone or in combination with anastrozole on osteoblastic MC3T3‑E1 cell proliferation and differentiation were investigated. Cell counting kit‑8, reverse transcription‑polymerase chain reaction and biochemical methods, such as ELISA and alizarin red S staining, were used in the present study. It was revealed that mSGLXD not only stimulated MC3T3‑E1 cell proliferation, but also upregulated alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin gene and protein expression levels. High concentrations of anastrozole (10 or 100 µmol/l) markedly inhibited MC3T3‑E1 cell proliferation, but this inhibitory effect was attenuated by mSGLXD. Furthermore, mSGLXD increased MC3T3‑E1 cell mineralization following β‑glycerophosphate and ascorbic acid induction. Therefore, the results of the present study suggested that mSGLXD may be a promising adjuvant therapy, with high safety and efficacy, for the prevention and treatment of AIBL in patients with breast cancer who receive AI treatment.
