Abstract Soft conductive gels are essential for epidermal electronics but often face challenges when interfacing with uneven surfaces or areas with extensive hair, especially under mechanical stress. In this study, we employed the concept of liquid-to-solid transformation to enhance integration at biointerfaces and designed an in-situ biogel capable of rapidly transitioning between liquid and solid states within 3 min via a temperature switch. The biogel features a semi-interpenetrating polymer network design and dual conduction pathways, resulting in high tensile strength (~1–3 MPa), a skin-compatible modulus (~0.3–1.1 MPa), strong skin adhesive strength (~1 MPa), and superior signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, ~30–40 dB). The biogel demonstrates significant performance in mechanically demanding environments, showing potential for accurately capturing outdoor exercise data, monitoring muscle recovery from sports-induced fatigue, and in vivo monitoring of cardiac physiological signals. The liquid-to-solid transformation concept, coupled with the design strategy for highly integrated and stable soft conductive materials, provides a basis for advancing conductive interface designs for high-fidelity signal acquisition.

Abstract Objective This study aims to perform a prenatal genetic diagnosis of a high-risk fetus with trisomy 7 identified by noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and to evaluate the efficacy of different genetic testing techniques for prenatal diagnosis of trisomy mosaicism. Methods For prenatal diagnosis of a pregnant woman with a high risk of trisomy 7 suggested by NIPT, karyotyping and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) were performed on an amniotic fluid sample. Low-depth whole-genome copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to clarify the results further. In addition, methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) was performed to analyze the possibility of uniparental disomy(UPD). Results Amniotic fluid karyotype analysis revealed a 46, XX result. Approximately 20% mosaic trisomy 7 was detected according to the CMA result. About 16% and 4% of mosaicism was detected by CNV-seq and FISH, respectively. MS-MLPA showed no methylation abnormalities. The fetal ultrasound did not show any detectable abnormalities except for mild intrauterine growth retardation seen at 39 weeks of gestation. After receiving genetic counseling, the expectant mother decided to continue the pregnancy, and follow-up within three months of delivery was normal. Conclusion In high-risk NIPT diagnosis, a combination of cytogenetic and molecular genetic techniques proves fruitful in detecting low-level mosaicism. Furthermore, the exclusion of UPD on chromosome 7 remains crucial when NIPT indicates a positive prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 7.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a main nonenzymatic antioxidant, but its effects and underlying mechanisms on growth and intestinal health in weaned piglets still require further assessment. A total of 180 weaned piglets were randomly allotted to 5 groups: a basal diet (CON), and a basal diet supplemented with antibiotic chlortetracycline (ABX), 50 (GSH1), 65 (GSH2), or 100 mg/kg GSH (GSH3). Results revealed that dietary GSH1, GSH2, and ABX improved body weight and the average daily gain of weaned piglets, and ABX decreased albumin content but increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity and the ratio of AST to alanine transaminase levels in plasma. GSH2 significantly decreased glucose content but increased the content of triglyceride and cholesterol in the plasma. Both GSH1 and GSH2 improved the jejunal mucosa architecture (villus height, crypt depth, and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth), tight junction protein (ZO-1 and Occludin), and antioxidant capacity (CAT and MDA), and the effects were superior to ABX. Dietary GSH improved the jejunal barrier by probably inhibiting the myosin light chain kinas pathway to up-regulate the transcript expression of tight junction protein (ZO-1 and Occludin) and Mucins. Through the proteomics analysis of the jejunal mucosa using 4D-DIA, the KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that differentiated proteins were significantly enriched in redox homeostasis-related pathways such as glutathione metabolism, cytochrome P450, the reactive oxygen species metabolic pathway, the oxidative phosphorylation pathway, and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-serine/threonine kinase pathway in GSH2 vs. CON and in GSH2 vs. ABX. The results of proteomics and qRT-PCR showed that GSH supplementation might dose-dependently promote growth performance and that it alleviated the weaning stress-induced oxidative injury of the jejunal mucosa in piglets by activating SIRTI and Akt pathways to regulate GPX4, HSP70, FoxO1. Therefore, diets supplemented with 50–65 mg/kg GSH can promote the growth of and relieve intestinal oxidative injury in weaned piglets.

Underwater object detection is critical for marine ecological monitoring and biodiversity research, yet existing algorithms struggle in detecting densely packed objects of varying sizes, particularly in occluded and complex underwater environments. This study introduces Underwater-Yolo, a novel detection network that enhances performance in these challenging scenarios by integrating a dual-branch occlusion-handling attention mechanism (GLOAM) and a Cross-Stage Partial Dilated Deformable Convolution (CSP-DDC) backbone. The dilated deformable convolutions (DDCs) in the backbone and neck expand the receptive field, thereby improving the detection of small objects, while the deformable convolutions enhance the model’s adaptive feature extraction capabilities for unstructured objects. Additionally, the CARAFE up-sampling operator in the neck aggregates contextual information across a broader spatial domain. The GLOAM, consisting of a global branch (using a Vision Transformer to capture global features and object–background relationships) and a local branch (enhancing the detection of occluded objects through depthwise–pointwise convolutions), further optimizes performance. By incorporating these innovations, the model effectively addresses the challenges of detecting small and occluded objects in dense underwater environments. The evaluation on the CLfish-V1 dataset shows significant improvements over state-of-the-art algorithms, with an AP50 of 93.8%, an AP75 of 88.9%, and an AP-small of 76.4%, marking gains of 4.7%, 16.7%, and 6%, respectively. These results demonstrate the model’s effectiveness in complex underwater scenarios.

Optimal voltage controls have been widely applied in wind farms to maintain voltage stability of power grids. In order to achieve optimal voltage operation, authentic grid information is widely needed in the sensing and actuating processes. However, this may induce system vulnerable to malicious cyber-attacks. To this end, a tube model predictive control-based cyber-attack-resilient optimal voltage control method is proposed to achieve voltage stability against malicious cyber-attacks. The proposed method consists of two cascaded model predictive controllers (MPC), which outperform other peer control methods in effective alleviation of adverse effects from cyber-attacks on actuators and sensors of the system. Finally, efficiency of the proposed method is evaluated in sensor and actuator cyber-attack cases based on a modified IEEE 14 buses system and IEEE 118 buses system.

For islanded microgrids (MGs), distributed control is regarded as a preferred alternative to centralized control for the frequency restoration of MGs. However, distributed control with successive communication restricts the efficiency and resilience of the control system. To address this issue, this paper proposes a distributed event-triggered control strategy for the frequency secondary control in islanded MGs. The proposed event-triggered control is Zeno behavior free and enables each DG to update and propagate its state to neighboring DGs only when a specific “event” occurs, which significantly reduces the communication burden. Compared with the existing event-triggered control, a trigger condition checking period of the proposed event-triggered control is provided to reduce the computation burden when checking the trigger condition. Furthermore, using the aperiodicity and intermittent properties of the communication, a simple detection principle is proposed to detect and isolate the compromised communication links in a timely and economic fashion, which improves the resilience of the system against FDI attacks. Finally, the control effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated by the simulation results of the tests on an MG with 4 DGs.

Diets containing higher-amylose-content starches were proved to have some beneficial effects on monogastric animals, such as promoting the proliferation of intestinal probiotics. However, current research on the effects of diets with different starch sources on animals at the extraintestinal level is still very limited. We hypothesized that diets with different starch sources may affect lipid-related gene expression and metabolism in the liver of pigs. This study aimed to use adult pig models to evaluate the effects of diets with different starch sources (tapioca starch, TS; pea starch, PS) on the liver gene expressions and metabolism. In total, 48 growing pigs were randomly assigned to the TS and PS diets with 8 replicate pens/group and 3 pigs per pen. On day 44 of the experiment, liver samples were collected for metabolome and transcriptome analysis. Metabolome data suggested that different starch sources affected (p < 0.05) the metabolic patterns of liver. Compared with the TS diet, the PS diet increased (p < 0.05) some unsaturated fatty acids and several amino acids or peptide levels in the liver of pigs. Moreover, transcriptome data indicated the PS diets elevated (p < 0.05) fatty acid β-oxidation-related gene expression in the liver of pigs, and reduced (p < 0.05) unsaturated fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression. The results of quantitative real-time PCR confirmed that the PS diet upregulated (p < 0.05) the expression of acyl-CoA dehydrogenase very long chain (ACADVL), carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT) 1A, and malonyl-CoA decarboxylase (MLYCD), and downregulated (p < 0.05) the expression level of cytochrome P450 2U1 (CYP2U1) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 1B1 (ALDH1B1) in the liver. In addition, the results of a Mantel test indicated the muscle fatty acids were significantly closely correlated (p < 0.05) with liver gene expressions and metabolites. In summary, these findings suggest that diets containing higher amylose starches improved the lipid degradation and the unsaturated fatty acid levels in pig livers, and thus can generate some potential beneficial effects (such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant) on pig health.

To mitigate accidents in submarine cable construction within the rapidly expanding offshore wind power sector, this study employed the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and risk matrix method (LS) to assess the risks associated with identified factors. Based on project research and expert consultations, five primary and twenty-two secondary risk factors were identified. AHP was utilized to rank the primary risk factors by severity, probability, and detection difficulty, with the highest risk being the environmental impact, followed by third-party destruction and worker error. LS was applied to rank the secondary risk factors by likelihood and severity, with the highest risks being complex submarine topography, low underwater visibility, and fishing operations. The study proposes risk reduction measures based on these evaluations and offers methodological guidance for improving construction safety in similar enterprises.

Abstract Background Betel nut chewing plays a role in the pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). As the major active ingredient of the betel nut, the effect of arecoline and its underlying mechanism to OSF and OSCC pathogenesis remain unclear. Methods Next-generation sequencing-based transcriptome and dRRBS analysis were performed on OSF and OSCC cells under low-dose arecoline exposure. Functional analyses were performed to compare the different roles of arecoline during OSF and OSCC pathogenesis, and key genes were identified. Results In this study, we identified that low-dose arecoline promoted cell proliferation of both NFs and OSCC cells via the acceleration of cell cycle progression, while high-dose arecoline was cytotoxic to both NFs and OSCC cells. We performed for the first time the transcriptome and methylome landscapes of NFs and OSCC cells under low-dose arecoline exposure. We found distinct transcriptome and methylome profiles mediated by low-dose arecoline in OSF and OSCC cells, as well as specific genes and signaling pathways associated with metabolic disorders induced by low-dose arecoline exposure. Additionally, low-dose arecoline displayed different functions at different stages, participating in the modulation of the extracellular matrix via Wnt signaling in NFs and epigenetic regulation in OSCC cells. After exposure to low-dose arecoline, the node roles of FMOD in NFs and histone gene clusters in OSCC cells were found. Meanwhile, some key methylated genes induced by arecoline were also identified, like PTPRM and FOXD3 in NFs, SALL3 and IRF8 in OSCC cells, indicating early molecular events mediated by arecoline during OSF and OSCC pathogenesis. Conclusions This study elucidated the contribution of low-dose arecoline to OSF and OSCC pathogenesis and identified key molecular events that could be targeted for further functional studies and their potential as biomarkers.

Noise-shaping (NS) successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) using passive integrators have drawn increasing attention owing to their simplicity and power efficiency. However, a capacitor array with a passive integrator result in a huge number of unit capacitors and power consumption. This paper presents a second-order fully passive NS-SAR ADC with a segmented capacitor array and a hybrid switching procedure. We use a most-significant-bit(MSB) sampling-segmented capacitor array to reduce the number of unit capacitors, and a common mode voltage(VCM)-based hybrid switching procedure to reduce the average switching power. Compared to fully passive NS-SAR ADCs with conventional capacitor array and switching procedure, the total number of unit capacitors is reduced by about 84%, and the average switching power is also reduced by about 97.8%. The prototype was fabricated using 180nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) technology, it only uses 478 unit capacitors, resulting in an area of 0.086 mm2. It consumes $16.5~\mu \text{W}$ , achieves 73.7 dB peak signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio(SNDR), and a Schreier figure of merit(FoMs) of 165.5 dB.

Underwater vision technology is crucial for marine exploration, aquaculture, and environmental monitoring. However, the challenging underwater conditions, including light attenuation, color distortion, reduced contrast, and blurring, pose difficulties. Current deep learning models and traditional image enhancement techniques are limited in addressing these challenges, making it challenging to acquire high-quality underwater image signals. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an approach called adaptive multi-scale multi-color space underwater image enhancement with GAN-physics fusion (AMSMC-UGAN). AMSMC-UGAN leverages multiple color spaces (RGB, HSV, and Lab) for feature extraction, compensating for RGB’s limitations in underwater environments and enhancing the use of image information. By integrating a membership degree function to guide deep learning based on physical models, the model’s performance is improved across different underwater scenes. In addition, the introduction of a multi-scale feature extraction module deepens the granularity of image information, learns the degradation distribution of different image information of the same image content more comprehensively, and provides useful guidance for more comprehensive data for image enhancement. AMSMC-UGAN achieved maximum scores of 26.04 dB, 0.87, and 3.2004 for PSNR, SSIM, and UIQM metrics, respectively, on real and synthetic underwater image datasets. Additionally, it obtained gains of at least 6.5%, 6%, and 1% for these metrics. Empirical evaluations on real and artificially distorted underwater image datasets demonstrate that AMSMC-GAN outperforms existing techniques, showcasing superior performance with enhanced quantitative metrics and strong generalization capabilities.

To ensure stable and normal transformer operation, light gas protection of the transformer Buchholz relay is essential. However, false alarms related to light gas protection are common, and troubleshooting them often requires on-site gas sampling by personnel. During this time, the transformer’s operating state may rapidly deteriorate, posing a safety threat to field staff. To tackle these challenges, this work presents the near-field, thin-sliced transformer monitoring system that uses Electromagnetic Energy Transmission and Wireless Sensing Device (ETWSD). The system leverages external wireless energy input to power gas monitoring sensors. Simultaneously, it employs Near-Field Communication to obtain real-time concentrations of light gases, along with the electrified state and temperature. In field testing conducted on transformer relays’ gas collection chambers, the ETWSD effortlessly monitors parameters within warning ranges, encompassing methane gas concentrations around 1000 ppm, leakage voltage ranging from 0–100 V, and relay working temperatures up to 90 °C. Additionally, to facilitate real-time diagnosis for electrical workers, we have developed an Android-based APP software that displays current light gas concentrations, leakage voltage collection values, and temperature, while also enabling threshold judgment, alarms, and data storage. The developed ETWSD is expected to aid on-site personnel in promptly and accurately evaluating transformer light gas protection error alarm faults. It provides a method for simultaneous, contactless, and rapid monitoring of multiple indicators.

This study investigates the effects of nanofillers on the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between aggregate and cement paste by using nanoindentation and statistical nanoindentation techniques. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms are revealed through micromechanical modeling. The nanoindentation results indicate that incorporating nanofillers increases the degree of hydration in the ITZ, reduces the content of micropores and low-density calcium silicate hydrate (LD C–S–H), and increases the content of high-density C–S–H (HD C–S–H) and ultrahigh-density C–S–H (UHD C–S–H). In particular, a new phase, namely nano-core-induced low-density C–S–H (NCILD C–S–H), with a superior hardness of 2.50 GPa and an indentation modulus similar to those of HD C–S–H or UHD C–S–H was identified in this study. The modeling results revealed that the presence of nanofillers increased the packing density of LD C–S–H and significantly enhanced the interaction (adhesion and friction) among the basic building blocks of C–S–H gels owing to the formation of nano-core–shell elements, thereby facilitating the formation of NCILD C–S–H and further improving the performance of the ITZ. This study provides insight into the effects of nanofillers on the ITZ in concrete at the nanoscale.

Two pervious concrete projects (named as SR28 and SR431), with the same mixture design but different winter maintenance activities, were included in this research. Both projects are located in the Lake Tahoe area, Nevada, United States. Testing results indicated that the mechanical properties were significantly higher in SR28 cored samples than the ones in SR431. It was found that the SR28 pieces have fewer air voids, while the SR431 samples have higher water absorption and hydraulic conductivity, and the SR28 samples show fare better performance against repeated freezing and thawing cycles than the SR431 ones. scanning electron microscope pictures of crack surfaces in cores taken from SR28 indicate that the cement binder phase has been largely retained. However, in the coring sample of SR431, needle-shaped residues can be seen within the cement binder phase and an abundance of precipitated micro-sized crystalized particles can be observed. On a micrometer scale, the μCT examination reveals that the porosity of SR28 samples is significantly less than that of SR431. The analyzing results give a clue to demonstrate the durability of pervious concrete pavement can be attributed to the construction quality control, maintenance activity, or the weather and locations of the field sites.

Recycling aluminosilicate-based solid wastes is imperative to realize the sustainable development of constructions. By using alkali activation technology, aluminosilicate-based solid wastes, such as furnace slag, fly ash, red mud, and most of the bio-ashes, can be turned into alternative binder materials to Portland cement to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction and maintenance activities of concrete structures. In this paper, the chemistry involved in the formation of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) and the influential factors of their properties are briefly reviewed. The commonly used methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and X-ray pair distribution function technology, to characterize the microstructure of AAMs are introduced. Typical characterization results of AAMs are shown and the limitations of each method are discussed. The main challenges, such as shrinkage, creep, efflorescence, carbonation, alkali–silica reaction, and chloride ingress, to conquer for a wider application of AAMs are reviewed. It is shown that several performances of AAMs under certain circumstances seem to be less satisfactory than traditional portland cement systems. Existing strategies to improve these performances are reviewed, and recommendations for future studies are given.

In this paper, we propose a novel liquid metal microheater utilizing a textured structure. This microheater effectively solves the problem of the liquid metal in the PDMS flow channel fracturing at a certain temperature and significantly increases the maximum operating temperature that can be achieved by the current liquid metal microheater. Experimental results demonstrate that this new structured microheater can achieve a maximum operating temperature exceeding 300 °C. To explain the performance improvement and the reasons behind liquid metal fracture, corresponding experiments were conducted, and explanations were provided based on the experimental results. Subsequently, we verified the mechanical flexibility of the microheater and found that it exhibits excellent tensile and bending resistance. Finally, utilizing its good mechanical flexibility, the microheater was successfully attached to the side wall of a cup, resulting in the boiling of water.

This work proposes an “N2-1” sacrificial strategy to help to improve the accuracy of the bonding technique from the existing level. The target micropattern is copied N2 times, and (N2-1) of them are sacrificed to obtain the most accurate alignment. Meanwhile, a method for manufacturing auxiliary solid alignment lines on transparent materials is proposed to visualize auxiliary marks and facilitate the alignment. Though the principle and procedure of alignment are straightforward, the alignment accuracy substantially improved compared to the original method. With this technique, we have successfully fabricated a high-precision 3D electroosmotic micropump just using a conventional desktop aligner. Because of the high precision during the alignment, the flow velocity is up to 435.62 μm/s at a driven voltage of 40 V, which far exceeds the previous similar reports. Thus, we believe that it has great potential for high precision microfluidic device fabrications.

One-part alkali-activated slag (AAS) as a binder material has a promising application in the construction industry. The properties of one-part AAS incorporating agricultural wastes have been seldom studied. In this paper, the fresh and hardened properties of one-part AAS with the addition of rice straw powder (RSP) were investigated. The reaction rate in the acceleration period of AAS is reduced by RSP. The compressive strength of the mixture decreases with the introduction of RSP, while the flexural strength increases. The porosity of the hardened mixtures becomes lower when RSP was incorporated. N-(C)-A-S-H gel was detected in the system when 4.2% RSP was present. The RSP reduces the early-age autogenous shrinkage of AAS by providing internal curing to the matrix, but its effect on long-term drying shrinkage is limited.

Since the connection of small-scale wind farms to distribution networks, power grid voltage stability has been reduced with increasing wind penetration in recent years, owing to the variable reactive power consumption of wind generators. In this study, a two-stage reactive power optimization method based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is proposed for achieving optimal reactive power dispatch in wind farm-integrated distribution systems. Unlike existing optimal reactive power control methods, the proposed method enables distributed reactive power flow optimization with a two-stage optimization structure. Furthermore, under the partition concept, the consensus protocol is not needed to solve the optimization problems. In this method, the influence of the wake effect of each wind turbine is also considered in the control design. Simulation results for a mid-voltage distribution system based on MATLAB verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Consumer demand for tasty and quality meat has been quickly increasing. This study investigated how dietary supplemented rutin affects meat quality, muscle fatty acid profile, and antioxidant capacity in the Chinese indigenous Qingyuan partridge chicken. A cohort of 180 healthy 119-day-old chickens was subjected to a randomized assignment into three groups, identified as the control, R200, and R400 groups, with respective supplementation of 0, 200, and 400 mg/kg of rutin. The results revealed insignificance in growth performance, namely, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed-to-gain ratio, across the various treatment groups (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, dietary rutin supplementation increased (p < 0.05) breast muscle yield and intramuscular fat content in breast muscle and decreased (p < 0.05) drip loss in breast muscle. Rutin supplementation increased (p < 0.05) the content of high-density lipoprotein but decreased (p < 0.05) the contents of glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol in serum. Rutin supplementation increased (p < 0.05) the levels of DHA (C22:6n-3), total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), n-3 PUFAs, decanoic acid (C10:0), the activity of Δ5 + Δ6 (22:6 (n − 3)/18:3 (n − 3)), and the ratio of PUFA/SFA in breast muscle but decreased (p < 0.05) the level of palmitoleic acid (C16:1n-7), the ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFAs, and the activity of Δ9 (16:1 (n − 7)/16:0). Rutin treatment also reduced (p < 0.05) the contents of malondialdehyde in serum and breast muscle, and increased (p < 0.05) the catalase activity and total antioxidant capacity in serum and breast muscle and the activity of total superoxide dismutase in serum. Additionally, rutin supplementation downregulated the expression of AMPKα and upregulated the expression of PPARG, FADS1, FAS, ELOVL7, NRF2, and CAT in breast muscle (p < 0.05). Convincingly, the results revealed that rutin supplementation improved meat quality, fatty acid profiles, especially n-3 PUFAs, and the antioxidant capacity of Qingyuan partridge chickens.

Various distributed cooperative control schemes have been widely utilized for cyber-physical power system (CPPS), which only require local communications among geographic neighbors to fulfill certain goals. However, the process of evaluating the performance of an algorithm for a CPPS can be affected by the physical target characteristics and real communication conditions. To address this potential problem, a testbed with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) is proposed in this paper. On the basis of a power grid simulation conducted using the real-time simulator RT-LAB developed by the company OPAL-RT, along with a communication network simulation developed with OPNET, multiple distributed controllers were developed with hardware devices to directly collect the real-time operating data of the power system model in RT-LAB and provide local control. Furthermore, the communication between neighboring controllers was realized using the cyber system model in OPNET with an Ethernet interface. The hardware controllers produced a real-world control behavior instead of a digital simulation, and precisely simulated the dynamic features of a CPPS with high speed. A classic cooperative control case for active power output was studied to explain the integrated simulation process and validate the effectiveness of the co-simulation testbed.

Abstract Background With increasing health awareness among consumers, the demand for healthier, tastier, higher quality and nutritional value pork is increasing. It has been shown that different dietary starch sources can alter the carcass traits and meat quality. However, research on the effects of different starch sources with clear different amylose/amylopectin ratio on the amino acid and fatty acid composition in Longissimus thoracis (L. thoracis) muscle of pigs is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different dietary starch sources on carcass traits, meat quality, muscle amino acid and fatty acid composition, and the mRNA expression levels of genes involved in lipid metabolism and muscle fiber characteristics in finishing pigs. A total of 72 Duroc × Landrace × Large White barrows were randomly allocated to 3 different dietary treatment groups with 8 replicate pens/group and 3 pigs per pen. This study compares the degradation behavior of the alkali-activated slag/fly ash (AASF) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortars exposed to phosphoric acid with different pH values. The experimental results show that AASF mortars exhibit better resistance than OPC mortars against surface damage, although both systems get white deposits on the surface in phosphoric acid with a relatively high pH level. AASF mortars obtained lower mass loss than OPC mortars in phosphoric acid with pH at 2 and 3. The strength reduction in AASF mortars after immersion in phosphoric acid is more significant than that in OPC mortars. However, total degradation depth of AASF was smaller than that of OPC regardless of the pH of the acid solutions. Based on the experimental data, linear relationships were identified between the slope of degradation depth–mass loss curves and the Al/Si and Ca/Si ratios of the binders. This may indicate a new way to assess the degradation behavior of AASF and OPC based on their chemical compositions.

This study aims to investigate the effects of guanidine acetic acid (GAA) on carcass traits, plasma biochemical parameters, tissue antioxidant capacity, and tissue-bound amino acid contents in finishing pigs. Seventy-two 140-day-old (body weight 86.59 ± 1.16 kg) crossbred pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) were randomly assigned into four treatments with six replicate pens and three pigs per pen, which were fed the basal diets supplemented with 0, 0.05%, 0.10%, or 0.15% GAA, respectively. The plasma glucose concentration decreased, and creatine kinase activity and levels of GAA and creatine increased with the dietary GAA concentration. GAA linearly improved creatine content in the longissimus thoracis muscle (LM) and heart. The activities of superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and glutathione peroxidase increased linearly in tissue or/and plasma, while the contents of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl decreased linearly. GAA improved the contents of multiple-bound amino acids (such as proline or isoleucine) in the myocardium and LM. In conclusion, GAA enhanced the plasma biochemical parameters, oxidative status, and bound amino acid profiles of the heart and LM in finishing pigs.

This paper proposes a method for pressure driven rapid reconfigurable liquid metal patterning. A sandwich structure of “pattern—film—cavity” is designed to complete this function. Both sides of the highly elastic polymer film are bonded with two PDMS slabs. One PDMS slab has microchannels patterned on the surface. The other PDMS slab has a large cavity on its surface for liquid metal storage. These two PDMS slabs are bonded together, face to face, with the polymer film in the middle. In order to control the distribution of the liquid metal in the microfluidic chip, the elastic film will deform under the high pressure of the working medium in the microchannels and then extrude the liquid metal into different patterns in the cavity. This paper studies the factors of liquid metal patterning in detail, including external control conditions, such as the type and pressure of the working medium and the critical dimensions of the chip structure. Moreover, both a single-pattern and a double-pattern chip are fabricated in this paper, which can form or reconfigure the liquid metal pattern within 800 ms. Based on the above methods, reconfigurable antennas of two frequencies are designed and fabricated. Meanwhile, their performance is simulated and tested by simulation and vector network tests. The operating frequencies of the two antennas are respectively significantly switching between 4.66 GHz and 9.97 GHz.

Utilizing coral aggregate concrete (CAC) for construction on remote islands can significantly reduce construction cost and period, CO2 emission, and consumption of non-renewable energy. The durability of reinforced CAC structures is critically influenced by their resistance to chloride attack. In this study, a reactive transport modelling was developed to investigate chloride ingress in CAC, in which a COMSOL-PHREEQC interface based on MATLAB language was established. The experiment from the literature was taken as a benchmark example. The results show that the developed numerical model can accurately predict chloride transport in CAC. Differing from ordinary aggregate concrete (OAC), Kuzel’s salt does not appear in cement hydrate compounds of CAC during chloride ingress. The numerical results indicate that the penetration depth of chloride in CAC gradually increases as the exposure time is prolonged. When CAC is exposed to an external chloride solution, the decrease in the pH of the pore solution affects the precipitation of Friedel’s salt, which is detrimental to the chemical binding of chloride.

Abstract Background Insects, such as Hermetia illucens larvae, are rich in chitin and proteins, and represent a suitable feed ingredient replacement for animals. However, little is known about the effect of administering H. illucens larvae on intestinal microbiota, bacterial metabolite profiles, and mucosal immune status in animals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of administering H. illucens larvae on colonic microbiota and bacterial metabolites production in finishing pigs. Seventy-two crossbred (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) female pigs (initial body weight, 76.0 ± 0.52 kg) were randomly allocated to three different dietary treatments: a control diet (Control group) and two diets corresponding to 4% (H1 group) and 8% (H2 group) H. illucens larvae inclusion levels, respectively. Each treatment consisted of eight pens (replicates), with three pigs per pen. After 46 days of feeding, eight pigs per treatment (n = 8) were slaughtered, and the colonic digesta and mucosa were collected for microbial composition and microbial fermentation products, and genes expression analyses. Large-scale integration of PV generators in distribution grids will impair the voltage stability due to the stochastic and fluctuated PV power generation. To tame the volatile PV power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are deployed as an effective yet expensive power buffering mechanism. In this paper, a dual ascent-based voltage optimization control is proposed to achieve the concurrent regulation of battery State-of-Charge (SoC), nodal voltages, and distribution loss. This control features the limited dependence on the communication network with information interaction between neighboring nodes. Besides, it can achieve the optimal power flow minimizing the distribution loss while maintaining the BESS SoC within a healthy range. The derivation of the control framework is provided, and comparative simulations in the IEEE 37-node distribution system are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

It is a key challenge to continuously power personal wearable health monitoring systems. This paper reports a novel liquid metal-enhanced wearable thermoelectric generator (LM-WTEG that directly converts body heat into electricity for powering the wearable sensor system. The gallium-based liquid metal alloys with room-temperature melting point (24~30 °C) and high latent heat density (about 500 MJ/m3) are used to design a new flexible finned heat sink, which not only absorbs the heat through the solid-liquid phase change of the LM and enhances the heat release to the ambient air due to its high thermal conduction. The LM finned is integrated with WTEG to present high biaxial flexibility, which could be tightly in contact with the skin. The LM-WTEG could achieve a super high output power density of 275 μW/cm2 for the simulated heat source (37 °C) with the natural convective heat transfer condition. The energy management unit, the multi-parameter sensors (including temperature, humidity, and accelerometer), and Bluetooth module with a total energy consumption of about 65 μW are designed, which are fully powered from LM-WTEG through harvesting body heat.

In previous studies, two conflicting conclusions existed, which were: (a) the isobutane/n-butane ratio of natural gas increases with the increasing maturity (R o ) of source rocks and (b) decreases with the increasing R o . In this paper, the correlations between the isobutane/n-butane ratios, dryness of natural gases, and the R o values of source rocks of 77 gas samples from Cretaceous and Tertiary in Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin, Triassic Xujiahe Formation in central Sichuan Basin, Carboniferous–Permian in Sulige and Yulin gas field, Ordos Basin, China, and 80 shale gas samples from Mississippian Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth Basin, the United States are analyzed to reveal the evolution of the isobutane/n-butane ratios, then mathematical models of the isobutane/n-butane ratios and R o are attempted to be established. Results show that the isobutane/n-butane ratio initially increases and then decreases with increasing R o , both coal-derived gas and oil-type gas. Diverse types of kerogens may be responsible for the different corresponding R o values when the isobutane/n-butane ratios of gases reach their maximum values. The initial increase in the isobutane/n-butane ratios with increasing R o is the reason that isobutane is mainly generated at a higher rate by carbonium ion reaction of α-olefins with protons during kerogen primary cracking at lower maturity, whereas free radical reactions to form n-butane relatively quickly during oil cracking at higher maturity and isobutane cracked at a higher rate during the wet gas cracking stage may result in the terminal decreases in the isobutane/n-butane ratios. Besides, mathematical models of the isobutane/n-butane ratios of different types of natural gas and maturity are established. Therefore, the maturity of gas source rock can be obtained quickly based on the models using the isobutane/n-butane ratio combined with other component information (such as dryness, wetness, etc.), which is of great significance to the characterization of natural gas maturity and gas source rock correlation.

The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggers oxidative stress in cells by oxidizing and modifying various cellular components, preventing them from performing their inherent functions, ultimately leading to apoptosis and autophagy. Glutathione (GSH) is a ubiquitous intracellular peptide with multiple functions. In this study, a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative damage model in IPEC-J2 cells was used to investigate the cellular protection mechanism of exogenous GSH against oxidative stress. The results showed that GSH supplement improved the cell viability reduced by H2O2-induced oxidative damage model in IPEC-J2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, supplement with GSH also attenuated the H2O2-induced MMP loss, and effectively decreased the H2O2-induced mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing the content of mtDNA and upregulating the expression TFAM. Exogenous GSH treatment significantly decreased the ROS and MDA levels, improved SOD activity in H2O2-treated cells and reduced H2O2-induced early apoptosis in IPEC-J2 cells. This study showed that exogenous GSH can protect IPEC-J2 cells against apoptosis induced by oxidative stress through mitochondrial mechanisms.

The fatigue characteristics of the AZ91D-T6 alloy samples taken from engine blocks have been investigated at 20 °C and elevated temperature (150 °C). The fatigue strength and cyclic stress amplitude of the alloy significantly decrease with the increase of the test temperature, although cyclic hardening occurs continuously until failure for both temperatures. With the increase of the temperature, the decreased fatigue life of the alloy tested at the same stress amplitude is mainly attributed to the decreased matrix strength and the increased hysteresis energies. Fatigue failure of the engine blocks made of AZ91D-T6 alloy is mainly controlled by casting defects. For the defect-free specimens, the crack initiation behavior is determined by the single-slip (20 °C) and by environment-assisted cyclic slip (150 °C) during fatigue, respectively. The low-cycle fatigue lives of the alloy can be predicted using the Coffin-Manson relation and Basquin laws, the three-parameter equation and the energy-based concepts, while the high-cycle fatigue lives of the alloy fitted well with the developed long crack life model and MSF life models. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a huge problem in countries all over the world, and new approaches to identifying strains resistant or susceptible to certain antibiotics are essential in fighting against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Genotype-based machine learning methods showed great promise as a diagnostic tool, due to the increasing availability of genomic datasets and AST phenotypes. In this article, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Set Covering Machine (SCM) models were used to learn and predict the resistance of the five drugs (Tetracycline, Ampicillin, Sulfisoxazole, Trimethoprim, and Enrofloxacin). The SVM model used the number of co-occurring k-mers between the genome of the isolates and the reference genes to learn and predict the phenotypes of the bacteria to a specific antimicrobial, while the SCM model uses a greedy approach to construct conjunction or disjunction of Boolean functions to find the most concise set of k-mers that allows for accurate prediction of the phenotype. Five-fold cross-validation was performed on the training set of the SVM and SCM model to select the best hyperparameter values to avoid model overfitting. The training accuracy (mean cross-validation score) and the testing accuracy of SVM and SCM models of five drugs were above 90% regardless of the resistant mechanism of which were acquired resistant or point mutation in the chromosome. The results of correlation between the phenotype and the model predictions of the five drugs indicated that both SVM and SCM models could significantly classify the resistant isolates from the sensitive isolates of the bacteria (p < 0.01), and would be used as potential tools in antimicrobial resistance surveillance and clinical diagnosis in veterinary medicine.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of citrus extract (CE) on intestinal microbiota, microbial metabolite profiles, and the mucosal immune status in broilers. A total of 540 one-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allotted into three groups and fed a basal diet (control group), or a basal diet containing 10 mg/kg of zinc bacitracin (antibiotic group), or 10 mg/kg of CE (CE group). Each treatment consisted of six replicates, with 30 broilers per replicate. After 63-day feeding, two broilers per replicate were randomly selected and slaughtered, and their ileal and cecal digesta and ileal tissue were collected for microbial composition, microbial metabolites, and gene expression analysis. The results showed that CE significantly increased the abundance of Barnesiella and Blautia than did the antibiotic group (adjusted P < 0.05), whereas it decreased the abundance of Alistipes and Bacteroides (adjusted P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the CE group also increased the numbers of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus than did the control and antibiotic groups (P < 0.05), whereas it decreased the number of Escherichia coli (P < 0.05). For microbial metabolites, dietary supplementation with CE increased the concentrations of lactate, total short-chain fatty acids, acetate, and butyrate in the cecum than did the control and antibiotic groups (P < 0.05), whereas it decreased the concentrations of amino acid fermentation products (ammonia, amines, p-cresol, and indole) (P < 0.05). Additionally, supplementation with CE up-regulated (P < 0.05) the mRNA expression of intestinal barrier genes (ZO-1 and Claudin) in the ileum than did both the control and antibiotic groups. However, antibiotic treatment induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, altered the microbial metabolism, and disturbed the innate immune homeostasis. In summary, these results provide evidence that dietary supplementation with CE can improve the intestinal barrier function by changing microbial composition and metabolites, likely toward a host-friendly gut environment. This suggests that CE may possibly act as an efficient antibiotic alternative for yellow-feathered broiler production.

The present study used a combination of 16S rRNA MiSeq sequencing strategy and gas chromatograph time of flight mass spectrometer (GC-TOF/MS) technique to investigate the effects of starch sources on the colonic microbiota and their metabolites in finishing pigs. A total of 72 crossbred barrows were allocated to three different experimental diets with eight replicates and three pigs per replicate. The diet types included tapioca starch (TS), corn starch (CS), and pea starch (PS) (amylose/amylopectin were 0.11, 0.25, and 0.44, respectively). Results showed that the PS diet markedly increased (adjusted P < 0.05) the abundance of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and lactate producers, such as Lactobacillus, Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, and Megasphaera, while decreased (adjusted P < 0.05) the abundance of Escherichia coli when compared with the TS diet. The metabolomic and biochemistry analyses demonstrated that the PS diet increased (adjusted P < 0.05) the concentrations of organic acids (acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate, and lactate) and some macronutrients (sugars and long-chain fatty acids), and decreased (adjusted P < 0.05) the amino acids and their derivatives (leucine, glycine, putrescine, cadaverine, skatole, indole, and phenol) when compared with the TS diet. Additionally, Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that the changes in the colonic metabolites were associated with changes in the microbial composition. Correlatively, these findings demonstrated that the different dietary starch types treatment significantly altered the intestinal microbiota and metabolite profiles of the pigs, and dietary with higher amylose may offer potential benefits for gut health.

Alkali-activated slag and fly ash (AASF) materials are emerging as promising alternatives to conventional Portland cement. Despite the superior mechanical properties of AASF materials, they are known to show large autogenous shrinkage, which hinders the wide application of these eco-friendly materials in infrastructure. To mitigate the autogenous shrinkage of AASF, two innovative autogenous-shrinkage-mitigating admixtures, superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and metakaolin (MK), are applied in this study. The results show that the incorporation of SAPs and MK significantly mitigates autogenous shrinkage and cracking potential of AASF paste and concrete. Moreover, the AASF concrete with SAPs and MK shows enhanced workability and tensile strength-to-compressive strength ratios. These results indicate that SAPs and MK are promising admixtures to make AASF concrete a high-performance alternative to Portland cement concrete in structural engineering.

Gallium-based liquid metal can be used as a material for microheaters because it can be easily filled into microchannels and electrified to generate Joule heat, but the liquid metal-based microheater will suffer breakage induced by voids forming within the liquid metal when the temperature normally gets higher than 100 °C. To resolve this problem, a novel liquid metal-based microheater with parallel ventilating side-channels is presented. It consists of a liquid-metal heating channel and two parallel ventilating side-channels. The heating channel is connected with the side-channels by small gaps between polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) posts. Experimental results show that this novel microheater can be heated up to 200 °C without damage. To explain its excellent performance, an experiment is performed to discover the development of the voids within the liquid-metal heating channel, and two reasons are put forward in this work on the basis of the experiment. Afterward pressing and bending tests are conducted to explore the mechanical stability of the novel microheaters. Finally, the microheaters are applied to warm water to show their good flexibility on non-flat surfaces. In consequence, the novel liquid metal-based microheater is believed to be widely applicable to soft micro-electro-mechanical system(MEMS) heating devices.

The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of different grades of calcined clay on the extrudability and early-age strength development under ambient conditions. Four mix designs were proposed. Three of them contained high, medium, and low grades of calcined clay, respectively, and one was the reference without calcined clay. In terms of extrudability, an extrusion test method based on the ram extruder was introduced to observe the quality of extruded material filaments, and to determine the extrusion pressure of tested materials at different ages. For evaluating the very early-age strength development, the penetration resistance test, the green strength test, and the ultrasonic pulse velocity test were applied. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the developed mix designs were determined by the compressive strength test at 1, 7 and 28 days. Finally, the main finding of this study was that increasing the metakaolin content in calcined clay could significantly increase the extrusion pressures and green strength, shorten the initial setting time and enhance the compressive strength at 1, 7, and 28 days.

The brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) is a special type of machine with two sets of stator windings and one set of rotor winding. The magnetic field of the BDFM is considered to be complex with no regularity. To study the principles of magnetic fields for the BDFM, a general expression of the fundamental wave is deduced, which shows that the fundamental wave can be regarded as a standing wave when it is observed from rotor reference; also, some discussions about the characteristics of the fundamental wave are presented in the paper. Next, a model of wound-rotor BDFM prototype is established, and the enveloping line and the relations between rotor position and its electrical angle of the magnetic field are figured out in the paper. Finally, after detecting the induced electromotive force (EMF) of measurement coils embedded in the corresponding prototype machine, the validity of the proposed conclusions is verified.

Abstract Liver metastasis is the major cause of death in colorectal cancer (CRC) due to the lack of effective treatment. To explore novel drivers of CRC liver metastasis, the transcriptomes of primary paracancerous, colorectal tumors and metastases from human patients are profiled. It is found that SLIT‐ and NTRK‐like family member 4 (SLITRK4) is the top upregulated gene in liver metastases and is associated with worse overall survival of CRC patients. Multiple in vitro and in vivo models suggested SLITRK4 promoted CRC tumorigenesis, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis, and inhibition of it restrained CRC tumor growth and liver metastasis with a more profound effect on the tumor microenvironment (TME). Mechanistically, SLITRK4 overexpression significantly activated the PI3K/AKT/NFκB pathway, regulated extracellular matrix organization, and multiple cytokines expression. Furthermore, the results from coculture models and single‐cell RNA sequencing analyses suggested SLITRK4 promoted tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) infiltration and polarization. In addition, macrophage depletion significantly inhibited SLITRK4‐induced liver metastasis in CRC. Finally, pharmacological inhibition of SLITRK4 by using lipid‐polymer hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) for systemic siRNA delivery can effectively inhibit CRC liver metastasis. Taken together, these results pinpoint that SLITRK4 regulates CRC tumorigenesis and liver metastasis, and siRNA delivering NPs agents validate the therapeutic potential of targeting SLITRK4 in CRC.
